Ag Statistics
Vital Elements
Agriculture has always been the economic mainstay in Georgia. Founded in 1732, Georgia was one of the thirteen original colonies. By 1785 the first land-grant university in the U.S. was established in Athens.
Georgia is the largest state east of the Mississippi River with an area
of 37,451,520 acres (58,518 square miles). With land hi the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains and reaching to the shores of the Atlantic Ocean, there is a wide variation in climate, elevation, topography and soils in Georgia. The result is a wide variety of types and systems of farming in different sections of the state. The four

Many others rely on agricultural statistics: agribusiness firms, transportation firms, credit and insurance agencies, processing and storage companies, agricultural

Dear Editor: Would you please tell me how to distinguish red
sassafras from white sassafras, why the red is used for tea and the white is not and why it is used in January and February and not after March 1.
Mrs. W. H. Ayers Routes, Box265 Villa Rica, Georgia 30180.
Dear Editor: I recently purchased a cow with a baby calf from a
livestock sales auction. After making the purchase I found out that the calf was only 2 to 3 days old and that the cow and calf had been run through an auction the previous day. As it turned out, the calf had spent all of its short life in auction sales or being hauled around on a truck.
After returning home, I noticed that the calf had scours and shipping fever which developed into pneumonia. In spite of treating the calf it died when it was 6 days old.
I would like to suggest to all people who have baby calves to sell to wait until they are old enough to handle the stress that comes from hauling and being run through auctions. I know that scours occur in the first 10 days of the calves life.
There are probably a lot of people who sell calves that do not realize the danger to the calves but if they did, I am sure they would be more cautious.

Horses, mules, ponies
for sale
People who are buying and breed ing horses should ask to see the re gistration papers before leaving pre mises. The MARKET BULLETIN has received numerous complaints of people who buy a horse with the sell er promising to send papers later and the papers never appear. The MARKET BULLETIN has no jurisdic tion over such instances. A smart buyer and or person breeding a mare will ask to see the papers first.
In order to qualify to advertise horses, horse farmers should have had the livestock advertised in their possession 60 days or more before offering it for sale through this publi cation.
All horses offered for advertise ment through the Market Bulletin sh-, ould have a negative coggin test within the past 60 days.

I want to buy just a half dozen eggs, but the store manager won't let me. /Vhy can't I buy as many as I want?
R.F. Brunswick You may buy as many as you want, but not always as few as you'd like. Regulations require that each container of eggs must indicate the size or weight class and the standard of quality. In addition the name and address if the packer or distributor must be printed with either an expiration or racking date. If cartons are split, not all the information will be visible to he next shopper.
Can you tell me where I can find a book on purple martins?
G.Y.
Norman Park
Information on the birds is available in some general bird books. You may
be interested in contacting The Purple Martin News, printed each month in
Griggsville, Illinois 62340, with annual fees of five dollars. The Nature
House, Inc., also prints a book devoted solely to the martins at a cost of
S3.50ppd.

I need help in seasoning a new iron cooking pot. I have tried greasing it and cooking it in a very hot oven, but so far, no success.
R. Y. Covington Some iron pots have a tag, "preseasoned" and need no seasoning. How ever, if no tag, the pot has probably been given a thin coating of lacquer to prevent rust. This must be scoured off with scouring powder and a stiff brush. Then wash it hi hot soap suds, rinse and dry thoroughly. Coat the in side of the pot and cover generously with unsalted fat [lard, vegetable oils or what you have] and heat it in a slow oven for several hours. During the heating process apply more fat now and then. Wipe off excess fat when the seasoning has been completed and you shouldn't have to scour it again. But grease it before and after using for the first few weeks.

cotton business because we are using too much nitrogen for our rainbelt conditions."
The recommended practices emphasized nitrate monitoring through petiole analysis to determine if nitrogen was necessary.
One result of the success of the demonstration farms is that Georgia may get a substantial increase in cotton production in the years ahead, says Fulford, because Georgia cotton producers are now more confident they can make a profit with cotton.

cooperatives and organizations, agricultural colleges as well as federal, state and local government.
To strengthen our survey data, we have increased our telephone contacts to the agricultural industry. We take this opportunity to acknowledge and say "thank you" for the cooperation of Georgia farmers, processors, dealers, hatcherymen, merchants and others who provide the basic information concerning agriculture in Georgia.
PLANTS AND LIGHT
My grocery store advertised a special on chicken parts in the paper that was good until Sunday. I went shopping on Friday afternoon and they had sold out. I asked for a raincheck, but the butcher said he could not give me one.
R. V. Macon You are certainly entitled to a raincheck if the store has sold out of the
advertised special. If the butcher was not authorized to provide you with a
raincheck, someone hi the store should give you one good for 10 days foll owing the last date the special is offered. If the quantity is limited or the
product is not available at some locations, the facts must be included hi the
advertisement. However, h is the responsibility of the consumer to request
a raincheck.
Light is important in the life of your houseplants, but you have to be careful not to provide too much or too little. Doug Crater, Extension Service horticulturist, says plants should not be kept in direct sun. "If the newer leaves are smaller than older leaves, and if the plant is getting long and leggy, it probably is not getting enough light. Bottom leaves that turn yellow and fall off are also a possible symptom of too little light.

Archives Preserve
Old Farm Graves
Thousands of previously forgotten farm gravestone inscriptions have been permanently preserved at the Georgia Department of Archives and History as a result of the efforts of many MARKET BULLETIN readers, according to W. T. Rankin, president of the Georgia Genealogical Society.
Through requests for inscriptions published in the MARKET BULLETIN in recent years, the Society has been able to permanently preserve these historical records from the information submitted by readers, Rankin continued. These gravesites might well have gone unobserved and ultimately lost to posterity without these efforts.
"Nevertheless," said Rankin, "there are still over 50 Georgia counties from which no farm cemetery records have been received."
The Society asks that contributors of grave records send the exact directions from a state highway intersection. Give the name, if any, of the cemetery as well as the name, address and phone number of those persons whose permission is needed to visit the gravesite.
Write the inscriptions on a note pad, and include your own name, address and phone number, with the date at the top of each page. Mail to Cemetery Records, Georgia Genealogical Society, Box 38066, Atlanta 30334.
EYE PROTECTION
About 7,500 eye injuries occur on American farms every year, according to Cecil Hammond, engineer with the Georgia Extension Service. The injuries range from minor irritation to complete and permanent loss of sight.

Wlud 9 Rue?
:.fe
Rue is a bitter herb. It's latin name graveolens means 'strong smelling'. It was used as a disinfectant in prisons and courtrooms to overcome the stench and germs.
Although it is difficult to imagine anyone actually liking the flavor of rue, historians claim that in olden times it was highly prized for its strong taste.
Rue is mentioned only once in the Bible. In Luke 11:42, 43 the herb is referred to as an item of value used fortitheing.
The rue of ancient times and the rue of today are quite similar. They both have gray-green leaves, small yellow flowers. The plants are perennial and are hardy growers.
Farm sizes increasing As Numbers Decrease
The trend of fewer farms with greater acreage is continuing in Georgia according to the Crop Reporting Service. Preliminary estimates indicate that the total acreage of farmland in the state has increased by about 200,000 acres while the total number of farms has decreased from 55,000 in 1978 to 54,000 in 1979.
The average size farm hi Georgia is now 291 acres, 9 acres above the 1978 average. The amount of farmland in the state has been increasing since 1977, but most of this has occured on farms which are clearing land to increase production. Georgia now has approximately 15,700,000 acres of farmland statewide.
New congressional guidelines and the need for more accurate figures pertaining to farm production have necessitated a change in the calculation of farm numbers. Only those farms with sales of $1,000 or more are now included hi the census taken each year by agriculture officials.
Originally, a farm needed to be only 10 acres in size with annual sales totaling $50 or more. Places of less than 10 acres needed annual sales of $250 or more to be counted in the annual census. The change in farm definition reduced the number of farms by 11 percent in the U.S. while land was reduced two percent.
THE MARKET BULLETIN
Package Labels Tell All, Read Carefully and Save
Be a label reader when buying hamburger for your family. All ground meat is not the same quality according to standards enforced by the Georgia Department of Agriculture in compliance with federal regulations.
Keep Refrigerated
BEEF POTTIES ADDED
WT. 16 OZ (1 LB.)
Pre-packed meats must contain the following information: 1) product identification; 2) ingredients with the item weighing most first, on down to the item weighing the least; 3) the net weight of the product; 4) the packer or distributor's name and address and 5) the mark of inspection.
In this example, the product name includes 6) an additive which must be printed with the name. The name itself, beef patties, could be misleading. Ground beef and hamburger have a 30 percent fat limit set by the USDA. Beef patties, however, have no water or fat controls. Meat patties may contain mutton, pork, lamb or veal in varying amounts. So before you put a package in the cart, read the label.
Storage instructions 7) may also be included on the package. An 8) illustration of prepared food must be labeled "serving suggestion." Likewise, if six slices of meat are shown, the package must contain six slices of meat.
Wood Burners Available
To Some N. Georgians
A program to place 1,000 woodburning stoves in Northwest Georgia total electric homes is being cosponsored by the North Georgia Electric Membership Cooperative and the Tennessee Valley Authority.
The Georgia Forestry Commission will provide assistance by locating landowners who have cull hardwood to sell as firewood. The Commission will also seek wood cutters and firewood dealers to provide residents with fuel wood from the forest waste in the area.
This program is limited to the counties served by the North Georgia EMC. These include Whitfield, Murray, Catoosa, Chattooga, Walker, Gordon and part of Floyd. The consumer will repay the loan for the wood stoves and installation through their monthly electrical bill.
Landowners interested hi selling cull hardwood and persons in the area who are interested in the harvest and sale of firewood are urged to contact a forest ranger of the Georgia Forestry Commission in one of the counties.
Remember hi buying meat products, the name is important. The labels are there for the consumer's benefit. The Department of Agriculture hopes Georgians will use this information to become better shoppers.
Termite Damage
(Continued From Page 1)
contracts which fall into two categories, treatment and treatment/damage. Treatment only agreements include an initial treatment with annual inspections and follow-ups based on payment of renewal fees.
Should applications for termite control be made each year? Increased restrictions on the uses of pesticides have ended annual treatments hi most situations. If initial treatments are made properly, yearly inspections will be sufficient insurance.
What is a clearance letter? A clearance letter is a statement that the specified wood destroying organisms were not found in the structure on the date it was inspected. Such documentation is sometimes required by lending agencies before the transfer of property can take place. The company is not responsible for reporting hidden damages which may later become evident.
How can I be certain I am dealing with a reputable company? Most pesticide companies are well-established businesses within their communities. Be cautious with companies that knock on your door late at night or make offers at unusually low prices. Ask to see then1 identification card.
If you have questions not answered above or would like to know if an exterminator is licensed prior to entering a contract, call Ag Consumer Line at 1-800-282-5852.
FORESTRY IMPORTANT
Forestry is a $3.4 billion industry in Georgia that provides full-time jobs for about 82,000 people. Lamar Merck, Extension Service forester, says the future need for wood and wood products far outstrips today's production.

New Deals

were still in operation after two years.
The idea of becoming a plant broker with a contract to buy back flower and vegetable plants is appealing to many small gardeners. However, Extension horticulturists tell us that the budding plant market is saturated.
Also, many people have been led to believe that a gallon of a 'miracle fertilizer' can be diluted to infintesimal amounts and save production dollars. Plant food specialists, though, have proven that such an application does not provide the nutrients necessary to produce a healthy crop. * Before you buy a 'miracle' product or invest in a plant-growing business, check with the Department of Agriculture, your local county agent, or a reputable farm supply dealer. Know all the facts before you buy or invest your money.
