Animal Health
Focus Planned
Next week is Georgia Animal Health week. The purpose of this special period is to make the public aware of what they can do to enhance the health and welfare of their animals, whether domestic, poultry or companion.
Animal agriculture is a two billion dollar plus industry in Georgia.
If you consider the related industries the value is considerably more. One has only to look at the amount of space devoted to pet foods in the grocery store to have an appreciation of the impact of companion animals on economics. Georgia ranks number one in the nation in production of poultry and eggs, fourth in swine production on the eastern seaboard and is expanding rapidly hi beef and dairy production. Georgians should realize

their good fortune by having these large animal industries locally available producing high quality nutritious foods.
The goals of Georgia Animal Health week are to provide each animal owner with information concerning proper nutrition, control of internal and external parasites, prevention of infectious diseases, provision of optimum environmental conditions and control of reproductive disorders and inheritable defects.
Governor Busbee will begin the Animal Health week activities by signing a proclamation designating September 9-15 for special education efforts. All animal industry groups will participate in promoting, carrying-out or attending the various educational programs designed for their particular interest.
Area-type meetings are planned for Tifton, Athens, Galhoun, Atlanta, Albany, Macon and Augusta. Local meetings are being planned on a county or multi-county basis.

Area Brucellosis
Control Tightened
The standards for control and eradication of brucellosis have been strengthened to help prevent further spread of the deadly disease among cattle and swine herds.
The changes call for more flexible use of vaccine, individual herd plans for eliminating disease, dealer registration and record keeping, a permit and re-test system for moving cattle from states with "non-free" status and an upgrading of technical services.
The cattle industry is entering a herd-building phase which is traditionally a time that brucellosis will spread unless strong preventive measures are taken on the state, farm and federal level.
Most of the new controls go into effect this week. Other controls, such as state reclassification as to eradication status and moving cattle under the new classifications, will come later.

Can the machines at the service station be manipulated to move up after you stop pumping fuel and before you get inside to pay?
R. P. Savannah NO. The calibration devices are activated by pressure applied to the lever on the hose. Unless you are pumping gas, the price will not increase. Always reset the pump to zero before you begi*n *pu*m*ping.
Can you give me some information on controlling weeds in my orchard?
E.W. Alamo We have mailed you a copy of "Weed Control in Fruits and Nuts" which should help you get rid of unwanted plants. ****
The store where I shop puts their weekly specials on an outdoor sign in the parking lot. The problem is that in the newspaper ads they indicate the prices are good only with a ten dollar purchase. That information is not on the sign.
M.E. Macon The ads should agree. Information setting the limitation either should be added to the outdoor sign or removed from the newspaper ads. Thanks for calling.
Organic Insect Control Might JustWork For You
There are many things a person can do when insects become troublesome
in the home vegetable garden. All too often the first course of action is to use
insecticides.

Funds Sought
To Help Develop
New Energy Sources
Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin will ask the next session of the General Assembly for $400,000 for research into alternate energy sources using wood, animal wastes, solar energy and plant residues.
The money would be used to further develop four energy research programs already underway at the Georgia Institute of Technology.
One program, with a price tag of $75,000, involves construction of an automatically fed, wood-fired furnace system for heating livestock shelters. Refinement of the furnace for home use will be studied later.
Tech has already developed a dependable wood-fired furnace for poultry houses. They now seek to develop an automatic stoker system which could use wood chunks as well as pelletized wood or wood chip products.
Irvin said the abundance of wood as a replenishable energy source in Georgia makes research into its technological possibilities for both rural and urban use a necessity.
A second project, for $80,000, involves expanded research in the use of solar energy for grain and crop drying. This project will study the use of a wood gasification system to replace present gas systems in drying grain and other crops.
The largest research program calls for an expenditure of $175,000 to develop methane gas production from livestock wastes. This would be accomplished through technical improvements in the operation of a large scale anaerobic digestor system.
Tech has designed and built a 10,000 gallon, fully automatic multimodal type digester. They plan to enlarge this project to not only produce methane gas but to also deal with the increasing problem of livestock waste disposal.
The fourth program, $70,000, would further research in the production of alcohol fuels from Georgia agricultural products primarily for use in agricultural machinery and motorized vehicles.
Irvin said the legislative request represents an acceleration of work under a research contract the Department already has with Georgia Tech.

The response to our request for information on where to obtain 'Black's Planting Guide' has been fantastic. From the letters we received, it was obvious that many people considered it to be an invaluable guide to planting as well as everything else on the farm. For the benefit of our other readers, it is available by writing: T. E. Black, P. 0. Box 785, Andalusia, Alabama 36420. The cost is $2.00 plus . postage, about 75 cents.

Leek
Allium tricoccum
Ramps are often incorrectly referr-
ed to as wild onions. Actually they are wild leeks. They are both members of
the onion family, Allium. Wild leeks or
ramps are Allium tricoccum and wild
onions are Allium stellatum.
They taste similar to the uneduca-
ted, but to a wild forager the leeks are
preferred because of their mild flavor.
The mild flavor, however, is de-
ceiving because ramps bite back
much worse than wild onions.
Ramps and onions have one major
difference
their leaves. Wild
onions have the characteristic hollow
stem. Ramps on the other hand bear
a lance-shaped leaf that is very not
onion-like in appearance. These
leaves are usually five to nine inches
long.
Ramps grow wild in the mountains
of north Georgia. Look for them in
shady woodlands, often growing in
large clumps. The spring leaves die
back before the flower heads appear
but they often send up secondary
leaves late in the summer.
You can either pull up a ramp, rub off the dirt and eat raw or you might like to try serving it with other foods. Use ramps in place of onions but do so sparingly you don't want to miss school do you?
Organic Insect Control
(Continued From Page 1)
The garden area should be kept free of weeds all year. Several destructive insects may feed on weeds and then move to vegetables at a certain point in their life cycle. This problem becomes even more severe if the weeds are allowed to flourish and are then destroyed.
Generally, the number of insects that survive the winter is relatively small but, because of their reproductive capacity and abundant food, the pests may become extremely numerous by late summer or fall. A vegetable crop planted in the spring as early as weather permits will mature before it suffers very much from insect damage.
When transplants, such as tomato, eggplant and pepper, are being set out a simple physical barrier can prevent damage by cutworms and southern blight. The stems of transplants should be wrapped with a four by four strip of aluminum foil.
The stem area between the roots and leaves should be wrapped and planted such that two inches of foil-
Animal Health

will open their hospitals for planned visits by youth organizations. Organized industry groups plan animal health topics for their September programs. The Georgia Veterinary Medical Association will make speakers available at no charge to interested groups.
Radio and newspaper media will be supplied with information that will be useful to their listeners and readers. Special TV shows concerning animal health are planned during the week.
The public will be welcome at any of these events. Won't you join with us in this effort? If your organization would like to plan a program concerning animal health, contact your local veterinarian, county extension agent or write me.
wrapped stem is below the soil and two inches is above the soil. The collar should always be visible. If
later covered with soil, the collar becomes ineffective.
Choosing the correct variety, fertilizing and liming properly, and watering sufficiently will help reduce insect damage. All of these practices keep plants growing vigorously and healthy plants are able to tolerate far greater insect damage than unhealthy ones.
A vegetable that remains in the garden longer than necessary will be more exposed to insect attack. The overripe vegetable is often more attractive to insect pests and, as already mentioned, the population of most insect pests increases as the season progresses. So, damage may be reduced by harvesting vegetables as soon as they are ripe.
By following these practices insect problems may be reduced substantially. However, it is not possible to consistently grow high quality vegetables without using insecticides.
Many insects feed on the leaves, steins and fruit of vegetable plants and usually can be controlled with Diazinon, Sevin or Malathion. However, the correct choice of materials is essential for adequate control to avoid the possibility of waste and spray burn.
Insect identification and control recommendations can be obtained at the County Extension office or the Georgia Department of Agriculture.
