GAEHE Thinks
A Lot of You
When you are confronted with any problem related to home or family life, contact your local Extension staff. Although busy, we are never too busy to help you.
The Georgia Association of Extension Home Economists is a pro-
fessional organization of home economists employed by the University of Georgia Cooperative Extension Service. The association
as formed in
b1e9r3s2>wTitnod9a2ym( ewme-
number more than 200. Extension home economists have
the unique opportunity of working with families to improve their way of life. In this era of increasing pressures on family members, both social and economic, your local Extension home economist can help solve many of the problems that arise.
We can provide you with information via publications, news-
(Our guest columnist this week is Myrtis Akins, President, Georgia Association of Extension Home Economists, P.O. Box 795, Statesboro 30458.)__________
letters, news articles, radio programs, classes workshops and demonstrations.
Among the objectives of our GAEHE is the improvement of professional standards, creating fellowship and exchanging ideas and information. We also recognize leadership and those Extension home economists rendering outstanding service to the people of Georgia.
We are affiliated with the National Association of Extension Home Economists. Several of our members serve on national committees and are program participants. Four GAEHE members will receive the distinguished service award, our highest recognition.
The state association is involved in numerous projects throughout the year, several connected with the 4-H and youth program in Georgia. For example, a hospitality room is provided at the state 4-H Congress in Atlanta each August. This year we also presented an educational program at the state 4-H council meeting at Rock Eagle in June.

Pine Beetles

Attack Again

They remind us of huge hummingbirds as they dart in and out, up and down, to play a major role in providing healthy agricultural crops for Geor-
gia. The crop duster, many times flying only a few feet from the ground, uses his skill and nerve with pinpoint accuracy to treat more than 50 percent of the state's 15.5 million agricultural acres. There are about 130 licensed crop dusting businesses in Georgia with several hundred aircraft able to provide highly skilled, scientific agricultural chemical applications over wide areas in a relatively short period of time.
The Department of Agriculture is responsible for licensing Georgia crop dusters. To obtain a license in Georgia, pilots must have a FAA operator's permit and be a certified pesticide applicator.

Ga. Peanut Crop Promises

To Maintain 1 st Place Slot

Experts across Georgia again this year, anticipate peanuts will continue

as the state's number one money crop, producing more than 40 percent of

the nation's output, even though portions of the Georgia belt suffered consi-

derable drought damage.

While predicting new records for

the peanut producers, Tyron Spear-

man, Coordinator of the Georgia

Peanut Commission, said "limited"

areas do exist where farmers are

"hurting" ... even more, in some

cases, than in 1978.

On the optimistic side, some far-

mers in southwest Georgia are al-

ready turning up peanuts for solar

curing and combining, with most of

the harvesting expected to begin in

about 30 days.

Harvest estimates indicate a cash

crop of more than $350 million, with

an average of 3,400 pounds per

acre, compared to last year's 3,300

according to the Georgia Crop Re-

porting Service.

Georgia farmers this year planted

more than 526,000 acres across the

80 county peanut belt. The USDA

loan program provides that farmers

will receive about the same average

per ton price as they recorded last

Ralph Peavy, a south Georgia farmer from Randolph County, keeps a
close eye on his family's huge peanut crop. He says, thus far, things look
exceptionally good. And, even though the Peavy farms are well
irrigated, Peavy is quick to say a period of slow even rain would be of

year. However, Mr. Spearman says
that farmers should be in line for a slight dollar increase this year be-
cause of "excellent grading quali-
ties." Across the nation, production is
expected to reach more than 1.9

tremendous value.

(Continued On Page 8)

The Southern Pine Beetle, one of the south's most destructive forest insects, is on the attack again, endangering trees in at least five states.
Beetle infestations have been found in Alabama, Georgia, Louisana, Mississippi and South Carolina. In Alabama, the situation is considered of epidemic proportions in 36 counties.
Beetle activity had been at an all time low during the past two years but began to increase drastically during the late spring of this year.
The Southern Pine Beetle is a small, reddish-brown or black insect about the size of a grain of rice. It breeds in all species of southern yellow pine and occasionally in eastern white pine. Most susceptible targets for the beetle are damaged, unhealthy or old pine trees.
Beetles bore through the bark of a tree and build galleries in the inner bark where they lay their eggs. These galleries encircle the tree and kill it.
Landowners should watch their timber closely for early signs of the beetle. Lumps of pitch, about the size of popcorn, will extend up the trunk of the tree and red boring dust will appear in bark crevices and at the foot of the tree.
Removal of the infested trees is the most economical and practical control method. Infested trees should be cut and sold and trees that cannot be sold should be burned or chemically treated. Contact your local state forestry office for assistance.
Grandparents Day
The observance of Grandparents Day is gaining widespread support as it moves into its second year.
It has been designated by the President and Congress for recognition on the second Sunday in September, this year September 9th.
The campaign to honor grandparents has been championed to a large extent by Michael Goldgar of Atlanta where the movement makes its national headquarters.
Mr. Goldgar summed up the thrust behind the campaign saying, "We believe grandparents need a special day of their own. We don't like to feel that grandparents should be considered as yesterday's mother and fathers."

THE MARKET BULLETIN

CORRECTION
In the "Pick Your Own" column several weeks ago, Johnson's Orchard and Nursery, Ellijay, was incorrectly listed as having apples available on a pick-your-own basis. Their apples are for sale from the orchard, but already picked, seven days a week.
Dear Editor: I have some pastureland I would like to rent but I
have no idea of what to charge. Do you have any information that would be useful?
Mamie Strickland Atlanta, Georgia (Editor's note: There are so many variables in determining the worth of land it is difficult to quote an exact price. However, the Farm Real Estate Market Developments publication, published by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, lists $19.00 per acre as average for Georgia rental pasture in 1979.)

The dandelion is a golden-flowered menace to lovers of weedless lawns.
It begins growing from its perennial taproot in the very early spring, not only on home grounds but in fields and along roadsides over most of the country.
Virtually the entire plant can be used in various forms in dining.
The leaves, gathered before the flowers open, can be used in salads, to enhance a bread and butter sandwich, or cooked along with other greens.
The flower buds can be included in a choice omelet, or fried and made into fritters.
The root, if dug while young, can be boiled as a vegetable . . . or, at a later time, after drying and shriveled, the root can be ground for use as a "coffee-like" drink.
Easily recognizable, the plant will have, growing close to the ground, a rosette of irregularly lobed or toothed leaves from which a brilliant yellowgold daisy-like flower appears. The stem is slick, leafless and hollow.
The flower is surrounded by a necklace of green, reddish-tipped

Coastal Plain Productivity

Researched by Experts

Most of Georgia's one million irrigated acres are Coastal Plain soils. These soils are subject to leaching losses of fertilizer nutrients and compaction which limits root penetration into the subsoil.

"Purely Professional Profiles" is the theme for the state meeting to be held in Augusta, September 19-21. The home economists attending will have the opportunity to participate in workshops, hear outstanding speakers, visit commercial exhibits, and share ideas with other members. All of these activities are designed to improve the home economists professionally and enable us to better serve you.
That is our purpose to serve the people of Georgia in improving home and family life.

million tons which experts say should provide a plentiful supply for American peanut lovers and worldwide demand.
That demand is up 7.8 percent this year, a figure which could reach 600,000 tons ... up 100,000 tons from 1978.
Peanuts are Georgia's number one cash crop providing some 33 percent of the state's total agricultural dollar in 1978._________________
bracts. In time, the seed heads become puffy flakes of silken down which are carried by the slightest breeze to create an abundance of the flowers far and wide.
In addition, the down of the flower, when carefully blown by a child, is said to make dreams and wishes come true.

The effect of tillage on yield, nutrient uptake and nutrient compaction was investigated in a study conducted recently in Georgia on corn with center pivot irrigation on Coastal Plain soils. Nitrogen and potassium were applied through the irrigation system in the study conducted by Drs. G. A. Mitchell, D. A. Smittle, D. E. Threadgill, C. C. Dowler and J. R. Young of Georgia's Coastal Plain Experiment Station, Tifton.
The disc-harrow till treatment gave yields of 23 bushels per acre less than subsoil bed, deep-turn or rip-turn. According to Mitchell, "Tillage significantly affected the amounts of nitrogen, potassium, zinc and copper used by the plant. Plants in the deep-turn treatment recovered 13 percent more nitrogen and 18 percent more potassium."
The disc-harrow causes a compacted zone about six inches deep. The other treatments used break-up compacted zones to a depth of 16-18 inches or utilize a mold board plow which turns the soil to a depth of 1214 inches.
"This research shows that at high yield levels in corn, a tillage method which breaks up the compacted zone in soils will result in greater yields and more efficient utilization of nutrients," Mitchell concluded. "In addition, it appears that application of nitrogen and potassium in the irrigation water system may, in part, reduce effects of tillage on nutrient uptake by corn."
