Gas Price Question
Students Prepare for Horticulture Careers
Tops Energy Struggle; Ga. Holding Its Own
Ornamental horticulture touches the lives of everyone. It encompasses the identification and application of plant materials in and around homes, industrial buildings and parks and in recreational areas through attractive landscape designing, proper plant installation, and proper management practices.
Various types of training for professions in ornamental horticul-
ture may be obtained through a variety of programs offered in high schools, vocational technical schools, junior colleges and four year colleges. The level of training I desired prior to employment will dictate the type of educational program to be followed. Over a period of several years,
(Our guest columnist this week is F.B. Mc-
Cain, Chairman, Division of Agriculture,
Home Economics and Forestry, Abraham
Baldwin Agricultural College, Tifton 31794.)
Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College in Tifton has developed a strong two-year program in Ornamental Horticulture. This program involves the identification and application of plant material for home owners, industry and recreation through attractive landscape designing, proper plant installation and proper management practices. It combines both the wholesale and retail aspects for plants in a functional, aesthetic and profitable manner.
The three options offered at ABAC are Flower Shop and Greenhouse Management, Landscape Gardening and Maintenance, and Turfgrass Management. To receive the Associate Degree in Ornamental Horticulture, students must complete at least the requirements of any one option.
The curriculum involves such courses as plant identification, flower shop management, interior plant design, greenhouse management, plant propagation, nursery management, garden planning, landscape design, landscape contracting, turfgrass management and golf course design and management.

There was no doubt in anyone's mind that cotton was the primary topic of discussion when these three men exchanged remarks. The discussion came during this year's annual Cotton Promotion Day festivities in Vienna. The three are [1-r] Nelson Gibson, President. Southern Cotton Growers, Inc., Tommy Irvin, Georgia Agriculture Commissioner, and Macon Edwards, Vice-President of the National Cotton Council.
Increased Interest in Cotton
Boosts Attendance in Vienna
More than a thousand people turned out for this year's annual Dooly County Salute to Cotton. It was the 12th annual Cotton Promotion Day festivities at the Dooly Campground near Vienna.
Saying that "Georgia without cotton is like a day without sunshine,"
NationalSearch
For Rural Leader
Two $10,000 rural service awards will be given to the two individuals who exemplify rural leadership. The nationwide search is being made on behalf of the Winthrop Rockefeller Award for Distinguished Rural Service.
The awards, sponsored by the National Rural Center, will be presented in the spring of 1980. Deadline for nominations is September 10.
Leadership in any area of rural development, such as health care, education, employment, job training, justice and legal services, development finance, agriculture, business and manufacturing enterprises, would qualify an individual for consideration of the prestigious award.
Nominations and inquiries should be sent to: Winthrop Rockefeller Award for Distinguished Rural Service, National Rural Center, 1828 L Street, NW, Suite 1000, Washington, D.C. 20036.
Macon Edwards, the principal speaker, emphasized the upsurge in the manufacture and use of a wide range of cotton goods.
Mr. Edwards, vice-president of the National Cotton Council, told his audience that a "tremendous revival
for the cotton industry is expected with strong indications of its resurgence clearly coming into focus."
Edwards' remarks echoed much of what was said by a number of the program's other speakers.
The list included: Dolan Brown, Chairman, Georgia Commodity Commission for Cotton; Nelson Gibson, President, Southern Cotton Growers, Inc.; Tommy Irvin, Commissioner, Georgia Department of Agriculture; Bob Nash, President, Georgia Farm Bureau; Dr. Tal DuVall, Director, Cooperative Extension Service, and many others.
Commissioner Irvin outlined the importance cotton has played in molding Georgia's history as a powerful agricultural state. He commended the farmers of Dooly County for their leadership in the growth and production of cotton.
Commissioner Irvin told the crowd
that the state's overall cotton crop outlook is good and that Georgia could be in for a banner, record-setting year.
A congressional struggle over the President's stand-by gasoline rationing legislation, new charges for routine service accommodations and continued higher prices at the gas pump are some of the highlights of the energy saga over the last few weeks.
A heavily amended version of the rationing legislation got through the U.S. House late last week but the Senate failed to agree with all the changes.
The developments left the President without the stand-by authority until at least after Labor Day when the lawmakers return to capitol hill from a month-long summer recess.
White House sources indicate that the President disagreed strongly with the compromise bill anyway, and it probably would have fallen to veto even if it had been successful in the Senate.
Closer to home, service station operators were given the authority last week to begin charging for those routine services so long an accommodating tradition at the pumps.
It should come as no surprise now to motorists when they are asked to pay for a clean windshield, a check of air pressure in the tires or an extra charge for honoring credit cards.
However, the federal energy

Disney Movie Features
America's Morgan Horse
The history of the Morgan horse will be featured August 12 and 19 on the "Wonderful World of Disney". The program "Justin Morgan Had A Horse" tells the story of how the Morgan breed was developed in America.
"In our Colonial days, a small stallion in New England became famous for his speed, strength, and courage. He was to become known as Justin Morgan, and he sired America's first breed of horse."
The American Morgan Horse Association and their affiliate Georgia clubs encourage everyone to watch this entertaining and educational program featured in two parts on consecutive Sundays.

Wednesday, Augusts, 197!
Dear Editor:
Do you know of a mill in Georgia which grinds ap-
ples to make juice? I am looking fora mill within, say,
a fifty mile radius of Milner, Georgia [Lamar County]
about 12 miles south of Griffin.
I have a large quantity of nice apples which no one
seems to want, but which would be so good for me if I
could convert them into juice.
Mrs. W. Q. Gresham
P.O. Box 12
Milner, Ga. 30257.
(Editor's note: Although there once was an apple mill near
Griffin, to our knowledge it is no longer in operation. Does
L_anyone know of another?)

Wild ginger, no real kin to the better known tropical ginger, is an elusive lady, shy about showing off her beautiful three petaled bell shaped flowers.
The best places to search for the plant seem to be in moist wooded areas, on slopes, at the base of bluffs or in ravines.
Wild ginger grows from New Brunswick across southern Canada to Minnesota and then southward through the Carolinas, Alabama and into Georgia.
The plant is highlighted by two large heart-shaped, thin dark green leaves. They are borne on slender hairy stems up to six inches long. A purple-brown flower appears between the leaves on a short stem and droops its head toward the ground.
The roots are what you want. They can be harvested in the fall when they are at their best. Harvesting is a simple task. Located just beneath the surface, they can easily be exposed with a small gardening tool.
Yellowish in color, the roots may spread for a considerable distance from the base of the plant.
It's a good idea to leave pieces of the root where it is located so the plant will continue to survive. Ginger multiplies profusely, and even a broken piece of root will continue to grow.
Wild ginger may be used fresh as seasoning or for candy, syrup and beverages. Dried it comes in handy for seasoning or for use in beverages.
In preparation, the roots must be washed in a number of water changes with care taken not to scrub. Peeling is also not necessary.
Small compared to tropical ginger, the roots should be cut into small pieces to dry. The drying process should take about three or four days if they are placed near a heating outlet. When dry and ready to use, the root will be brittle.
If a natural drying process is not desired it may be accomplished by spreading the root pieces on a baking sheet and placing in a 200 degree oven for two to three hours.
If the wild root is to be used instead of the tropical variety, double or triple the amount called for in the recipe.
Store dried ginger airtight and it will keep indefinitely.
THE MARKET BULLETIN
A series of "Festival Days" at the Atlanta State Farmers' Market will continue Sunday August 12th when the events go Hawaiian Southern Style. Highlights of the Polynesian Festival will include an Hawaiian floorshow with hula, sword and fire dancers, a luau and barbecue. The events will be from noon to 6 p.m. with the barbecue sponsored by the Atlanta Produce Dealers Association. Tickets for the barbecue are $3.00 a plate ... everything else is free.
QQ consumer line...
I bought some premium gas and while I was pumping the cost jumped from $4.99 to $6. The clerk figured the cost based on the number of gallons I purchased, so the charge was only $5.24.1 hope that doesn't happen to anyone else.

Gas prices do seem to jump these days. We checked out the pump you
mentioned and the situation has been corrected. Look for the Georgia De-
partment of Agriculture seal on the tank each tune you buy fuel.

Horticulture Careers
(Continued From Page 1)
Specifically, program requirements consist of six quarters of course work plus one quarter of internship training.
Career opportunities abound in such areas as landscape nurseries, production nurseries, landscape maintenance firms, arboretums, botanical gardens, horticultural gardens, flower production, retail florists, garden centers, greeenhouse management," golf course management, recreational grounds management, and other related agribusinesses.
As with any profession, income for workers varies widely. Welltrained personnel with the initiative to succeed can readily find employment and receive highly satisfactory wages for their efforts.

Gas Price Question
(Continued From Page 1)
office in Washington has now imposed a 15.4 cent per gallon operational ceiling on all gasoline station operators.
Officials who are watching the prices closely say they have apparently stabilized with no further major increases foreseen in the immediate future.
The average price of gas in Georgia has increased some 27 cents a gallon since January.
On a statewide basis, according to the AAA Georgia Motor Club, the average price for regular is 92 V9 cents a gallon, premium is 98.9, regular unleaded is 96.9 and premium unleaded now routinely tops the dollar mark at 101.2 cents per gallon.
Other sources say dollar plus gas is becoming common place across Georgia, and motorists should be aware of the new half price pump indications being pressed into service.
When the price of a gallon of gasoline is over the dollar mark, most pumps across the state are calibrated to reflect a one-half amount figure. This is true both for the amount of gallons and the total price. Thus, both indications must be doubled to calculate accurate totals.
State Department of Agriculture officials say Georgia farmers have experienced some problems in obtaining necessary diesel fuel. The average price for diesel in Georgia is 87.3 cents a gallon.

Club, predicts "a general stabilization" in gas prices.
He says now with quantity availability no longer a major factor, buyer resistance and competitive prices should begin to surface in the near future.
Mr. Myers says consumer price buying probably will not be sufficient to bring about any decreases, but, it should play a major role in "long-term stabilization."
