Budget Restrictions
Handicap Agriculture
Why are we so lucky in the USA for always having a more than adequate food supply? There are several reasons but the one reason that must stand out in thinking peoples mind is the Land Grant College System. This system has in large measure been responsible for this nation's abundant agriculture and is the model being used by countries around the globe, and by governments trying to provide adequate food for their people.
U.S. consumers have the most varied, abundant and cheapest sup-
ply of food of all nations. Our consumers are the direct beneficiaries of the public investment by state and federal I governments to I this system.
We note that (this administration in its austere budget for FY80 raised funding for HEW by

eighteen billion dollars and gave HUD an increase of 18 percent. This same austere budget whittles away at agricultural research and extension.
Agricultural research and cooperative agricultural research have been cut by 48.46 million dollars. Extension Service funds have been cut by 5.9 million dollars.
The grant research funds at a 15 million dollar funding as a substitute for continuing funding from state and federal sources are a hoax and a fraud. Productive agricultural research cannot be built and maintained on grant funds.
Much of the grant funds will be frittered away on short term research and by many who neither have the expertise or motivation for obtaining long range agricultural goals. The public will be the loser in this propagandistic approach to agricultural research.
The world has enough land resources to feed an expanding population for many years. These resources can only be developed by science, technology and capital. As the Director of an Egyptian 60,000 acre desert reclamation project told

What 9 Apple?
Apples, as we know them, were of very poor quality during Biblical days. Scholars believe that the 'apples of gold' referred to in the Bible were actually apricots, a plentiful fruit in the Holy Land.
In the scriptures, Solomon inspired his people to teach wisdom and understanding. He said wise men listen to others and speak only at the right time. A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold in pictures of silver. Proverbs 25:11.
The golden-colored apricots grew wild in the Mediterranean area and were regarded second only in the peach for its sweet, succulent fruit. The tree grew twenty-five to thirty feet high, blossomed in early spring and produced pale pink flowers with dark red centers.
Apricot trees were cultivated in China two thousand years before the Christian era. It was a favorite wherever it was grown. As the apple tree among the trees of the wood, so is my believed among the sons. I sat down under his shadow with great delight, and his fruit was sweet to my taste. Song of Solomon 2:3.
Budget Restrictions
(Continued From Page 1) a group of us in March, 1978, progress on such projects was in direct proportion to the available science, technology and capital.
The success and progress of agriculture is a long range affair and is a step by step process which must be implemented by a continuing research and extension program.
From a strict U.S. economic welfare standpoint, agriculture is one of the very few U.S. industries that has the efficiency to continually have a favorable balance of payments in world trade.
Then, the question must be asked; "Why is agriculture the favorite whipping boy of the news media, consumer groups, environmentalists, politicians and bureaucrats?"
The answer we get in actuality on a defenseless target defies all the logic comprehension and rationality of the human mind. An appropriate response from our elite policy makers should be an attitude of national gratitude for being natives of a nation which has the greatest success story of civilized times . . . Swine Diseases
(Continued From Page 1] ians warn that time is crucial, however. A pregnant sow must be infected with TGE at least 30 days before farrowing. This allows time for the sow to recover from TGE, build up immunity to the disease and pass the protection on to the litter through her milk.
Adult hogs can be carriers of the disease without showing obvious symptoms. Veterinarians recommend that newly purchased hogs be quarantined for a short time before adding to a healthy herd.
The other deadly disease is African swine fever. While still thousands of miles away, the disease spread from Portugal to this hemisphere in 14 years. Health officials fear that the recent outbreak in Haiti will lead to infection of swine on the neighboring island of Puerto Rico, and ultimately result in African swine fever infecting American hogs.
The symptoms of African swine fever are painfully reminiscent of hog cholera: high temperature, weakness, tendency to huddle together as if cold, red blotches on the

Not really. A soil inoculant adds bacteria to the soil. If the conditions are right, the nitrogen in the soil will be stabilized and enhance growth potential. For the process to work the soil must contain enough organic matter, and have the right pH and fertility levels. The average Georgia red clay does not meet these conditions so you are still going to have to add fertilizer to achieve the desired results. If you are adding the soil inoculent to a potting soil mixture, chances are it already contains the bacteria supplied by the soil inoculent.
