Steady Growth In Ag Program
The Agriculture Program at South Georgia College in Douglas trains young men and women from the south Georgia and north Florida areas for profitable full-time employment in agribusiness industries or for the successful management and operation of a family farm.
Our course of study prepares students to enter private business in
positions that require fundamental training in agricultural business and marketing, farm management, and similar areas in the rapidly changing agricultural field.
The college's
two year curriculum provides instruction in animal husbandry,

swine production, farm manage-
ment, soil science, crop production, welding, wiring, forestry, drainage and irrigation, bacticulture, machinery and equipment, and livestock
feeding. Career program training is of-
fered through classroom instruction, practical and laboratory exercises, and on-the-job experience utilizing the campus agricultural facilities and local farms and agribusinesses. Our students gain not only special skills and a broad range of knowledge, but also a sense of professional, financial, and personal responsibility.
Graduates of the college's agriculture programs are presently filling jobs as farm managers, farm supply store managers and salesmen, research technicians, livestock graders and buyers, and inspectors. Others have returned home to operate a successful family farm.
The college's agriculture programs have experienced steady growth since their inception in 1975. South Georgia College currently has GVGF 100 students enrolled in agri-
culture cla5

Applications Needed Now Increased Horse Rustling
To Defer Loan Repayment Concerns Owners, GDA
Farmers desiring to defer payments on emergency disaster loans with the Small Business Administration or the Farmers Home Administration should get their applications in as soon as possible.
To make sure you provide the appropriate agency with the information that is needed, you should check with that agency. Normally, deferment requests should be accompanied by a balance sheet, profit and loss statement, substantiated crop loss information and a copy of last year's income tax return, but additional information may be desired by the lending agency.
Agency heads say requests for deferments will each stand on their own merit and be judged individually-
Most delays in processing farmer applications for disaster assistance or emergency help are caused by a lack of sufficient information pro-
vided by the applicant.
Horse stealing is against the law. Not many years ago the penalty was
hanging. Today the crime is punishable by fine and/or imprisonment.
The Department of Agriculture is making every effort to curb the increase
of horse theft in Georgia and is seeking answers and solutions to this grow-
ing problem.

Georgia Agrirama Preserves Agricultural Heritage
At a time of the year when most Georgians are readying themselves for the new year of 1979, the people at the Georgia Agrirama in Tifton march to a different drum. There, the calendar is rolled back a century and life goes on in much the same fashion as it did when pioneers were first settling in the state many years ago.
The Agrirama was created out of a need to preserve Georgia's agricultural heritage. It is approximately 1/3 complete today and is expected to be one of the major agricultural museums in the nation when finished.
Director of the Agrirama, Charles Hall, feels that people do not normally recognize the importance and need for preserving this part of our heritage. "More often than not, people tend to associate an old plow, etc., with the backside of a mule, something just not that important, " said Hall, "and we're striving to change that."
Visitors to the exposition take a step back into time to an era ripe with the traditions and lifestyle of turn-of-the-century Georgia. An entire community has been recreated and preserved in the style and culture of the state's pre-1900
rural farm communities. One of the most pleasantly sur-
prizing aspects of the entire undertaking is the fact that the Agrirama
employs between forty and fifty senior citizens fifty-five years of age and older to help project the pioneer
image of the community. Dressed in the clothing of the
time, these individuals re-enact the roles of the members of the community providing an excellent back-
drop for this historical period. Many also furnish an invaluable source of information for this era in time since they had parents and grandparents
who lived then. (Continued On Page 11)
The Georgia Agrirama located in Tifton provides an exciting trip into yesteryear. Most of the shops and farm buittin"" "*"* BnuiiMnent located hi the realistic pre-1900 rural C^orghTfarm community W CC^C! sa ==

wanted to see them preserved. After careful research and attention to detail, they were moved to their present sites at the Agrirama. There the Agrirama staff recreates

Dear Editor: I would like any information on a plant known as
"Devil's Shoestring"? I have heard that tea can be made from some part. I would like to know if this is the real name of the plant and all other information any of your readers might have and would like to
share. Mrs. Ruby S.Jordan Rt. 1, Box 32 Sparks, Georgia 31647
Dear Editor: I am trying to find instructions for making wisemen
Christmas decorations from Mrs. Butterworth bottles.
Does anyone have these instructions? MaryS. Brown Route 2, Box 172

Dear Editor:
From an ad in the BULLETIN, I ordered a nickle's
worth of martin gourd seed. I planted them and three
came up, one grew a few feet and had nothing but
flowers, one grew about forty feet and had a gourd or
two that didn't make it and one grew a vine, sixty feet
long with 150 feet of runners. It had one gourd 40 feet
up the vine on a six foot runner. I pulled the gourd a
few days ago and it weighed 13 pounds, was 33 in-
ches around and 14 inches high with a neck or handle
about 6 inches long.
I now better understand how Job was shaded by a
gourd vine and why gourds cost so much.

OFF-FARM INCOME
U.S. farmers last year earned nearly 60 percent of their income from off-thefarm sources, according to the Department of Agriculture. Nearly all farm families had some off-farm income, but the smaller the farm, the higher the proportion.

CARPORT TO ROOM
Thinking about turning a carport into a room? There are several things to consider, says Doris Oglesby, Extension Service housing specialist, and one of the most important is the floor. There needs to be a vapor barrier to keep moisture from coming up from the ground, and most carports do not have such a barrier. Miss Oglesby says this point needs to be checked out thoroughly before turning a carport into*a*ro*om.

Georgia Agriram a
(Continued From Page 1)
A stroll through the realistic pioneer community provides more unexpected surprises. Cotton fields and peanut patches are cultivated with the original implements used by the state's pioneer farmers. Housewives cook over old cookstoves and busy themselves with spinning wheels, millers grind corn in the mill, smithys work the blacksmith shop, young men tend the livestock and much more, all done as you pass by.
Every facet of the Agrirama has been carefully researched and recreated just as it appeared and occurred in 19th century Georgia. All the old farm homes, the chapel, the gristmill, the printing office, blacksmith shop, train depot and the rest have been moved from their original locations within the state and reset in the realistic surroundings of the Agrirama.
According to Hall, all the farm implements and machinery were donated by citizens who wanted them preserved for future generations of visitors. Everything on the grounds has either been donated or was purchased with money which was donated.
Even with all the current restorations at the Agrirama, present plans call for continuing developments and additions to the complex. A country-style house, a bank and other buildings are scheduled to be added.
Additionally, an Interpretation Center housing several recreated village shops, a pre-1900 opera house, administrative offices, conference rooms and an exhibition area are planned as is a visitors center providing audio-visual presentations and a museum displaying agricultural implements and artifacts.
For more information, contact the Georgia Agrirama, P.O. Box Q, Tifton 31794.
'Make Your Own' Logs
Uses Up Old Papers
Newspaper, string and a drop of detergent are all you need to make your own 'logs' suitable for fireplace burning. If firewood is not readily available or if you just want to use up excess newspapers, making logs from old papers is an economical and ecology-conscious way to keep warm this winter.
Roll layers of newspaper around a broomstick as tightly as possible. Keep rolling until the log is as thick as you want it. Tie off the ends with wire or string and remove the broomstick.
The logs are suitable for burning now but if you want to improve the 'log' and lessen the amount of fly ash, add a tablespoon of detergent to a tub of water and soak the logs overnight.
Next day remove the logs from the detergent solution and knead them with your fingers. This will make them more coilipact and longerburning . Logs treated in this manner must be dried several weeks before they can be used.
If kindling is also in short supply, wax-coated cartons, dried orange skins, peanut hulls and of course pine cones will burn quickly.

THE MARKET BULLETIN
Old Fashioned Favorite
Still Sought After Today
In response to a recent request, Mrs. Jenny Futral of Franklin sent us her pattern for the Star of LeMoyne quilt pattern as well as some interesting
historical information about the pattern.
Horse Rustling
(Continued From Page 1)
tattoos often discourage horse thieves because the animals are more easily identified by the law.
If your horse is stolen notify the Department of Agriculture immediately. The department will notify not only the sale barns throughout the state but also will send a description of the stolen animal to the horse slaughtering plants in Georgia, South Carolina and Florida.
According to Mrs. Futral, the Star of LeMoyne was the crest of the LeMoyne family, a french settler near Montreal. The design was first used as a quilt pattern in the early 1800's but was often mispronounced 'Lemon Star' by pioneer quilters.
To make the pattern, fold block across center each way to get center creases. Divide block into nine equal squares. The lines of the squares will give you the points of the triangles, according to Mrs. Futral.
We tried it and came up with this pattern which results in a quilt sq-
uare 15 inches square.
There are some things, however, that should never make their way into your fireplace. Cellophane, styrofoam, plastic and plastic coated materials lead the "no-no" list. Also, no matter how quickly you want a fire to get started, never, never, never douse the wood with gasoline, kerosine or other volatile liquids.
Stretchy Yarns
Garments made from stretchy yarns should retain their shape through repeated washings and dryings. To test yarn, pull a ten-inch length. It should stretch one and a half to three inches, then spring back to near original size.

Grandpa's
Garden
There is no way to keep your Christmas tree alive once it has been cut away from its roots. However, with a little perseverance and the following tips, you can keep it green and lively through Christmas.
The first thing to remember is to keep your tree away from any and all sources of heat. Heat in any form draws the moisture out of the leaves making the tree dangerously dry and combustible.
Place your tree in the coolest room in your home as far away from fireplaces, heaters, radiators, etc., as possible. The stump of the tree must be placed in water for the duration to keep moisture in the leaves and stems.
Mix two cups of corn syrup, two tablespoons of an iron supplement (fertilizer), four teaspoons of old fashioned laundry bleach all together in a gallon of hot water. Use this solution to keep the water container in your tree stand filled with water.
Next, cut the very end of the tree stump off. This removes any hardened rosins which would prevent the tree from absorbing the water from the container. Place the tree in the tree-stand and container and get ready to decorate the tree!
According to Mrs. G. Patterson of Wfldwood, the very best way to crack hickory nuts is to turn them on edge. She cautions to never lay the nut flat or the 'goodies' will be crumbly. If you do it her way, the meats will be large.
Getting the meat out of the coconut is another common problem. Heat the coconut in the oven (350 degrees for 30 minutes), let cool and crack. The meat will be easier to remove. If you need to grate the coconut, slice the meat thin, put in blender with coconut milk and then drain grated coconut in colander.
Generic
(Continued From Page 12)
troduced in late 1977 in the midwest. By late 1978 most states have some generic food products on the market.
Where is the savings? There are three areas to save money on generic products: (1) product quality. Most generic products are grade B or C quality whereas most brand names are grade A. Often a more mature product is used which is still safe and nutritious but does not meet the standards required for certain name-brand products. Also, the size of the vegetable or fruit may vary. (2) Little or no advertising and promotion and (3) less expensive packaging and labeling.
The decision to carry generic products is one made by the individual store. Consumer interest in the plain wrapper brands will certainly encourage the stores to try the products for a test period.

Heads of barley on the right, rye grain on the left. [Notice the long fi laments 'awns' on the barley.]
Barley was a very important staple during Biblical times. It is one of the oldest grains known to man and is high in nutritive values. Until the 16th century it was the main ingredient in bread. Barley bread is nutty flavored, and very filling.
Barley has a short growing season. In Palestine it is sowed in the autumn and is gathered in the spring during the season of Passover. Barley plays an important role in the story of the plagues sent to punish Pharaoh for keeping the Hebrews in bondage.
"....And the barley was smitten: for the barley was in the ear..." Exodus 9:24, 27, 31.
In addition, barley loaves were of prime importance in the feeding of the multitudes. "...There is a lad here, which hath five barley loaves and two small fishes...." John 6:8, 9, 10.
Barley contains a lower protein count than wheat or rye. While other grains such as rye and wheat were available to richer households, barley was the staple grain of the poorer homes.
One of the most characteristic features of barley are the 'awns' or long hairs which surround the grains. For cattle who feed on wild barley, the awns can cause problems in the eyes and mouths of the animals.
More than 100 exhibitors will be showing then- 1979 line of farming equipment this week as the second annual Dixie Farm Show opens in Atlanta at the Georgia World Congress Center December 14 through 17. The showing begins at 9:30 a.m. lasting until 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, and continuing for four full days through December 17.
Complimentary Farm Show tickets are available from your local farm equipment dealer or by contacting H&H Productions, 6303 Barfield Rd., Suite 201, Atlanta 30328, or phone 404/393-9300.

I work in a grocery store and lately several of our customers have demanded a refund on products containing sodium erythorbate. They are afraid the ingredient is another name for earthworms. What can I tell them?
B.T. Rome You can tell all those people who are worried about eating worms to eat crow. Worms are much too expensive as a food item to be sprinkled so libe rally in grocery products. It's a mystery how these rumors get started. Sod ium erythorbate is used to speed color fixation in cured meats and as a pre servative in baked goods. It is an isomer of ascorbic acid, which is present in citrus and leafy green vegetable crops. ****
Over the Thanksgiving holidays, we bought some dry roasted nuts and found a dry roasted tooth in the bottom of the jar. It was certainly an unpleasant surprise.
J.B. Stockbridge After receiving your sample and confirming the presence of the tooth, your surprise is understandable. The company has been notified and you may be assured that the situation will not occur again. It is a shame that a molar with so much work on it should have such an ignominious end.

Can you tell me any superstitions regarding yarrow? R. V. Jesup
Also called milfoil, sneezewort and achillea, it was once brought to wed dings to ensure seven years love. During medieval tunes it was used to build fires on St. John's Eve [June 23] to protect the people from evil spirits. The ancient Chinese considered it a sacred plant and used 50 dried yarrow stalks to provide answers when hi meditation.

Generic Products Surface
On Store Shelf in Georgia
Plain wrappers can be seen on lots of things today. Besides certain magazines and books, plain wrappers can be found on food and paper products in many grocery stores.
Technically it is called generic labeling. It means that you are buying the food or paper product not the brand. Although the product may be slightly inferior to brandname products, the items are wholesome, nutritious and packed under the same sanitary standards.
These 'unbranded products', sometimes called no-name and nofrill goods, are one of the newest marketing techniques of the food industry. The products were devised
as a result of consumer demand for a less expensive alternative to brand name products.
Up to now there have been basically two brands sold by retailers: national or name brands and store (private labels) brands. By introducing the lower cost generic labeled products, consumers have a greater choice in price and quality.

In Farm Bureau Post
At the Farm Bureau Convention last week in Jekyll Island, Bob Nash of Upson County was elected president of the statewide organization. Nash, a 20 year cattle farmer, received 372 votes of the 716 votes cast at the election.
Nash assumes the role of president following Emmett Reynolds eight year stay as leader of the 125,000 plus member organization. Other officials elected include W. J. McKinney, Clay County, 1st vice president; Johnny Dye, Elbert County, 2nd vice president and John Coley, Bleckley County, 3rd vice president.
New Farm Bureau board members include W. A. 'Billy' Johnson, Crisp County; J. C. Callaway, Troup County and James H. Vining from Ware County. Nash has been a member of the Georgia Farm Bureau for 18 years and hopes to improve marketing, increase commodity representation and strengthen local chapters as president of the organization.
