Today's pork producers have a much more sophisticated attitude about promoting and marketing their product. They are beginning to un derstand that increased consumer demand means a better profit pic ture.
Last year the National Pork Pro ducers Council (NPPC) carried out
[the largest pro motional cam paign of any com modity group in the United States. A year-round muI Iti-media camI paign was conI ducted in fourteen I large metropol itan areas where large numbers of consumers could be reached effectively for the most mileage from the pork producer's

advertising dollar. Pork producers launched a Pork-
fest campaign that involved the press, radio and TV. The campaign reached 70% of the consuming pub lic. In addition, the nationwide pork cookout and national pork queen contests were held.
To fund these activities, the pork producers utilize a market check-off program. When hogs are sold at market, the manager au tomatically deducts ten cents per head on hogs and five cents on feed er pigs from the producer's check unless otherwise told. In Georgia there are nine major hog markets which operate on the "implied con sent" program.
Besides promotion, pork pro ducers are also being represented in Washington, B.C. where their in terests in antibiotics, sulfa, and ni trites have been successfully pro tected. In addition, $135,000 was budgeted by NPPC for health re search and other problems con cerning pork producers.
The Georgia pork producers will meet in Tifton December 12 and 13 at the Rural Development Center. Presentations will be made re garding facilities, management, health and promotion in the hog in dustry.

Exposed Cattle
Require Brand
Cattle found infected with brucel losis are required to be branded with a "B" and must be sent directly to slaughter. The infection does not create a human health hazard in the processed meat.
In the November 8 edition of the MARKET BULLETIN it was reported that all cattle transported over state lines must be "S" branded which in dicates that the cattle have been tested for brucellosis and are safe for use. This is NOT correct.
Cattle exposed to brucellosis may be handled in one of two ways. They must either be branded with an "S" and shipped directly to slaughter or to a quarantined feed lot for future slaughter, or they may be returned to the farm of origin without brand ing and placed under quarantine for testing.

Durable Georgia Blueberries Gaining Increased Attention

Blueberries, unlike other more conventional Georgia crops, have grown

wild in the state as long as there have been honeybees and spring winds to

carry on the pollination necessary for procreation. Roughly one million po

unds of the berries were harvested this year by farmers in Georgia ranking

the state seventh in production according to the North American Blueberry

Council.

tablished, the plant seems to thrive

on neglect, requiring no spraying or

pruning, little fertilizer, and unfail

ingly producing larger crops of ber

ries each year.

resilient species now grown by many

producers in Georgia called the rab-

biteye blueberry. According to hor

ticulture specialists with the Univer

sity, these plants grow twice the size

in the same length of time as the

leading blueberry producers in the

northern states.

From approximately 75,000 plants

tested, seven stood the test and have

been released as the rabbiteye var

ieties. Individual names are Tifblue,

Climax, Woodard, Southland, De-

lite, Bluebelle andBriteblue.

The Game and Fish Division of the Georgia Department of Natural Re sources has recently initiated a project which it hopes will step up efforts to preserve and enhance the swiftly disappearing wildlife habitat throughout the state.

Dear Editor: I received a special kick out of the article on sor-
ghum syrup.
You stated in this article that it was transported all over the state for sale and is very popular among tourists. I just thought I would let you know while on a recent trip to Amsterdam what we had in one of their pancake houses. On the wall menu was an item "Georgia Sorghum Syrup".
My interest got the best of me and I asked the waiter, "what is Georgia Sorghum Syrup and where does it come from?" He proceeded to tell me in great detail that it was made from a corn like plant's stem and that Georgia was a province of the United States.
I did not have the nerve to tell him that I was in fact from Georgia. I did tell him how good it was.

An 11 percent increase in the U.S. apple crop is expect ed this year, and that may lead to a decline in prices this fall. In Georgia the 1978 apple crop is forcast at ten percent higher than last year when about 22 million pounds were produced.

The MARKET BULLETIN has received numerous complaints of people who buy a horse with the sell er promising to send papers later and the papers never appear. The MARKET BULLETIN has no jurisdic tion over such instances. A smart buyer and or person breeding a mare will ask to see the papers first.
In order to qualify to advertise horses, horse farmers should have had the livestock advertised in their possession 60 days or more before offering it for sale through this publi cation.

HONEY PECAN SWEET POTATOES

3 or 4 med. sized sweet potatoes 1/2 c. It. corn syrup

1/4 c. honey

dash salt

1/4 c. butter or margarine, melted 1/3 c. finely chopped pecans

Cook potatoes in the peeling in boiling water for 15 to

20 minutes or until tender. Cool, peel, slice lengthwise.

Arrange potatoes in shallow greased baking dish. Com-

bine remaining ingredients and pour over potatoes. Bake

in oven for 15 to 20 minutes in a 350 oven. Yield 6 ser-

vings.

1 stick butter or margarine

1/2 cup crunchy peanut butter

3 cups quick oatmeal

1 teaspoon vanilla

2 cups sugar

1/2 cup milk

3 tablespoons cocoa

1/2 cup chopped pecans

Combine butter, peanut butter, sugar, milk and cocoa.

Bring to a boil, stirring constantly and boil for 2 minutes.

Remove from heat and add oatmeal, vanilla and pecans;

stir well. Drop onto wax paper and let cool.

Blueberry plants which are ad vertised as 1 to 2 year old plants are on the average 8 to 12 inches tall. Horticulturists advise us that it takes an average of 3 more years before the blueberry plant will produce enough blaeberries to make a pie. If you have been nurturing a Christmas cactus through its dormant season, now is the time to "sock it to it." Frequ ent waterings and a sunny lo cation will encourage bloom ing for the holidays.
Growing your own grapefr uit and orange tree is a hobby of many readers including Jeff Wheeler. This nine year-old gardener saves the seeds from his citrus fruit and puts them in pots. Although Jeff may not have much luck in actually producing fruit, this is an inexpensive way to pro duce attractive green-leaved plants.
For an inexpensive but val uable Christmas present give your favorite gardener a pl ant notebook. You can make one from a store-bought ca lendar or assemble one with loose-leaf binder and ruled pages. Make room for notes about weather conditions, th ings planted, chores done, etc. Planning the next year's garden will be a lot easier if notes are made the year be fore.

sistant. Pruning each year is not required and the plants are insect and disease resis tant.
In addition, the berries may be refrigerated much longer than other blueberry species and have a smaller, dryer stem scar reducing leakage during packing and transport.
With so many better quali ties, new questions and ideas are being raised about ex panded commercial produc tion of blueberries. However, some of the old problems also remain.
Money has been a big fac tor negating the usefulness of blueberries to farmers. The average cost of $1.00 per pl ant calls for an initial invest ment of around $600.00 per acre, and this is after the land has been prepared for plant ing.
Blueberries also are not time-honored moneymakers and the three years before a new plant produces a com mercial harvest is too long for many farmers to wait for a return on an investment on land which could be put to good use in other ways.
To their credit however, blueberry plants are a one time investment. After plant ing and cultivation, these pl ants produce continuously for twenty to thirty years replac ing an initial investment in a single year. According to Dr. Austin, a good grower could easily produce over $800.00 worth of berries per acre at a present average retail price of $9.00 per flat.
An additional characteris tic of blueberry plants is the need to be planted in new gr ound which has not been cul tivated previously. This earth normally will not have been limed and will possess the more natural pH necessary for healthy plants.
Uncultivated, acid soil is not always available. Howev er, growing areas for blueberries would not take up val uable space normally allotted to the traditional cash-crops.
Blueberries may be used in . a variety of places to enhance the beauty of a landscape. Since they are poor competi tors, other plants should be kept two or three feet distant of the base of each plant for the first two or three years, especially noxious weeds which should be destroyed entirely.

In Biblical times the acacia was kn own as the shittah and its wood was called shittim. In Exodus 25: 10, re ference is made to the use of shittim in the building of an ark (altar). Ac cording to Biblical records, this ten foot altar was one of the first piece of sacred furniture made for the Taber nacle.
Shittim was chosen for the table as its wood is very close grained and has a natural resistance to insects and decay. When finished the wood is or ange and can be expected to endure for many generations.
The acacia tree is a member of the pea family. Its varieties are many and widespread throughout the world. 2000 years ago, the acacia was abundant in Egypt and even grew on a limited basis in the deserts of Arabia.
The name acacia is derived from the Egyptian word akakia which means thorn and refers to the thorns produced by some varieties. The ac acia or shittah of the Bible was a tho rny tree with sweet-smelling yellow flowers and soft green leaves. Its tru nk was gnarled and covered with rough black bark.
Acacias will grow in the southern most part of Georgia. They are con sidered a sub-tropical tree and requi re mild winters. In colder climates, they must be brought indoors as a potted plant or cultivated in a green house.
The acacia is a close cousin to the mimosa widespread in Georgia. The fine feathery foliage and low spread ing branches attest to their family si milarity.

Agent, Teacher of the Year

Named By Atlanta Farmers Club

The Atlanta Farmers Club has named the vocational agriculture teacher of the year and the agricultural county agent of the year. Nominations for both awards were made from the 23-county Atlanta area.

Joe Roberson of Rockmart, was named vo-ag teacher of the year. He was nominated by Polk County Sch ool Superintendent R. T. Guillebeau.

Named as agricultural county ag ent of the year was Carl Brack of Carrollton. Mr. Brack was nomina ted by Carroll County Commissioner Horrie Duncan.

Plant Nursery Inspections

Weed Out Needless Woes

The Georgia Department of Agriculture regularly inspects plants, shrubs, and sod, etc., sold in plant nurseries across the state. This service provides the state and the state's consumers with a constant protection against a variety of unwanted insect, weed and disease problems which might other wise be carried home by an unsuspecting shopper.

Due to increased foreign commer ce and utilization of transportation mediums, the threat of new pest and

disease introductions into the state has never been greater.
The Entomology Division which is responsible for the nursery inspecti ons employs 12 field inspectors who se duty involves the constant sur veillance of the state's nursery stock. Licenses are issued following an examination, and records of all businesses are maintained in the state office.

All plant nurseries in the state are inspected at least once a year and larger nurseries receive inspections several times a year depending upon needs. Greenhouse growers which ship interstate come under the same jurisdiction and are also required to be examined.

Agriculture field inspectors ex amine nursery stock carefully for in sect pests and disease problems which might otherwise go unnoticed.

wildlife habitat are being sought out across the state. These agents then persuade the landowners or tenants of these tracts to set aside plots of habitat of at least one acre for one year.
Landowners or tenants may also be cover agents. All are requested to protect the habitat acres from herbicide or pesticide sprays or any other programs which would be de trimental to the well-being of wildli fe.
One important aspect of the pro gram is that habitat preserved and managed for one particular species will benefit more than just that species. Nesting boxes erected for wood ducks are also used by bluebi rds, great crested fly-catchers and screech owls. Woodlands managed for vireos and warblers also benefit deer, turkeys and other species, and the list goes on.
Wildlife biologists will check the suitability of each plot and advise landowners and cover agents of the management potential. Detailed ma nagement plans will be drawn up when requested and each plan will be geared to the habitat of the target species.
