Charolais Breed
Finds Ga. Home
The word Charolais refers to an area of France which was and still is the source of superior Charolais cattle in Europe.
The cattle were first brought to the U.S. by Jean Pugibet of Mexico
City in 1930. An eight bull and 29 female genetic pool constituted the foundation of all Charolais in America until Canadian importation began in 1965.
Charolais have proven their ability for growth and feed conversion throughout America's test programs. Many of the

Charolais breeding characteristics may be found in the sixty active Charolais breeder herds throughout Georgia.
Fast growth, good carcass grade and yield characteristics personify some of the outstanding qualities of the cattle. In addition, Charolais may be genetically horned or polled (hornless), whichever is preferred.
The Georgia Charolais Breeders Association will host the American International Charolais Association's national meeting, March 17 through 22, 1980 in Athens. This event is the most prestigious meeting held within the Charolais cattle community, and the public is cordially invited to attend.
Any persons desiring additional information about the Charolais breed may attend the January 6, 1979 membership meeting held in conjunction with the Georgia Cattleman Association's Annual Convention and Trade Show at Callaway Gardens Inn in Pine Mountain.
Those individuals interested but not able to attend the meeting may write Mrs. Joan Christensen, Secretary-Treasurer, Georgia Charolais Breeders Association, Route 1, Matthews, 30818.

FrnHA Financing
Now Available
For Rural Homes
If you live in a rural area and have an adjusted gross income of $15,600 to $20,000 you may want to check with the Farmers Home Administration before you buy a house. The FmHA is now authorized to issue loan note guarantees up to 90 percent for rural dwellings up to 1400 square feet.
Borrowers are required to make a down payment of three percent on the first $25,000 and five percent of the loan above $25,000. Georgia's portion of the new program is 16 million dollars for fiscal '79.
In addition to the guaranteed housing program, the FmHA Business and Industry Guaranteed Program has funds allocated of 34 million dollars to help create and/or save jobs in rural Georgia. Towns with populations up to 50,000 are eligible.

Forest, Brush As Long Drought Lingers

Since October 14, almost 3,000 forest and brush fires have burned over 7,000 acres in Georgia according to the Chief of Forest Education, Frank Craven, with the Georgia Forestry Commission. Although dryer seasons have been recorded in the past in the state, the timber and farmland acreage is reaching dangerously dry proportions with great potential for
fire losses.

International

Forestry personnel and officials have been on duty non-stop for the past five weeks with no time off.

Peanut Push
In an effort to spread the good word about Georgia peanuts and peanut products, an extensive foreign education program is underway by the Georgia Agricultural Commodity Commission for Peanuts.
The peanut export promotion program is expected to help develop foreign markets for Georgia's million dollar crop. The $300,000 budget for the program is derived solely from peanut growers who assess themselves $1 per ton.
Promotion programs are planned for Japan, Great Britain, Sweden, Germany, Italy, Spain and the MidEast during the next year.

Average fire sizes according to Craven have ranged in only the 2 to 3 acre size meaning forestry personnel have been able to contain most outbreaks thusfar. However, under extremely dry conditions such as the state is now experiencing, this may become increasingly difficult to maintain. One outbreak in Pickens County has already resulted in the destruction of over 300 acres.
There are no plans at the present time for a fire ban or cancellation of hunting seasons. The Forestry Service is urging all hunters and campers on a voluntary basis to use no outside fires and exercise extreme caution with matches, and cigarettes, etc.

Those individuals who observe a fire in progress should contact your local forestry service immediately. Telephone numbers are located on the inside of the first page of most phone directories and should be generally easy to locate.

Since cooler weather has arrived gardening interests have turned to indoor plants. Many of the plants you enjoyed through the summer such as coleus, impatiens and begonias make fine houseplants for winter months.
Begonias will tolerate shade but the more sun they receive the more
flowers they will produce. Impatiens too will survive in shade and will continue blooming throughout the winter.
If you want to bring in some of your favorite herbs, parsley and chives will survive the winter quite well in a kitchen window. Pot up a healthy clump of each and give them a prime place in a sunny window.
Mrs. Edna Morris of Austell wrote us about her son's new hobby of growing vegetables. "I cut off the top of several carrots, about two in-
ches, and Jimmy puts the carrot tops in a bowl on top of loose gravel. After adding a little more pebbles or gravel we water the bowl and keep it in bright light."

The Georgia Society of Associa tion Executives has established the F. Abit Massey Lecture, to be held annually "to present an occasion for enhancing the professionalism of as sociation management." The Lec ture, honors Massey for his contri butions to the Georgia Poultry Fed eration, Georgia Society of Associa tion Executives, and American So ciety of Association Executives. The Resolution was presented by Jim Parkman, past president of GSAE.

THE MARKET BULLETIN

Wednesday, November 15,1978

Dear Editor:
Late last week [week ending Nov. 5] four horses were stolen from their pasture north of Atlanta:
Sorrel mare, white star, unshod, small lump on foreleg pastern and rope burn scar on rear
pastern. White streak on left rear hoof. About 17 Hands 14 yrs. Grey gelding, black stripe down back, knot
of skin on forehead, 10 yrs., 15.1 Hands,
unshod. Sorrel gelding, white blaze, right rear white sock, unshod, 11 yrs., 15.5 Hands.
Bay gelding, white blaze, small white patch
on ear, about 11 years, unshod and won't permit shoeing. I hope this letter serves as a warning to all horse owners that no longer can we assume that properly fenced pasture land in our fine state can be consider-
ed safe for animals. As the father of one of the girls whose horse was
stolen I can attest to the feeling of helplessness and the ache in the pit of the stomach when having to explain that someone had taken her long term animal friend and companion. If only the thieves could ap-
preciate such affections. Dan McBride 2010 Eldorado Drive
Atlanta, Ga. 30345 [Editor's note: If anyone has information about these stolen animals, contact the police or the Georgia Department
of Agriculture immediately. ]

THE MARKET BULLETIN

QQ consumer fine...

Toidccd?
Rabbit tobacco is as American as apple pie and baseball. Although it does grow in other countries, rabbit tobacco is one of the most abundant wild plants in the United States and can be found growing practically from coast to coast.
Because of its common availability, most people recognize it on sight. The white cottony flowers appear in late summer on tall awkward stems. The leaves are skinny and long. When the plant is crushed it has a slight lemon scent, but these characteristics are not the ones rabbit tobacco is best known for.
Crushed rabbit tobacco leaves rolled in old newspaper have been the downfall of many kids caught smoking behind the barn. Besides giving an adolescent his first puff, rabbit tobacco also has the reputation of giving many of those kids the sickest feeling of their lives.
Gnaphalium obtusifolium came to be known as rabbit tobacco because the fuzzy flower heads resemble rabbit fur and the leaves were enough like tobacco to be associated with same.
The plant is also known as cud weed, catfoot, life everlasting, silver leaf and cotton weed. In other countries, medicinal concoctions have been derived from the plant to cure malaria, and bronchitis. The name cud weed comes from an old wives' tale that if cattle eat the plant it will help them chew their cud.
Even though rabbit tobacco has no particular horticulture value it is prized for its use in dried flower arrangements. Beautiful fall decorations can be made by combining rabbit tobacco and crimson red sumac berries.

How long can I leave my milk out on the counter without harming it? B.R.
Toccoa It's not how long you leave it out, but the temperature of your counter. In handling milk, you should remember that each time it gets wanner than 40
degrees, the quality will deteriorate. Cooling the milk only retards the process once it has started. Therefore, if you want your family to have the
freshest tasting milk possible, bring it home quickly from the grocery and
store it properly 33 degrees to 40 degrees F in the refrigerator. ****

B. V., Gainesville: We need your complete address to send the informa

tion on rabbit tobacco.

I bought some fescue seed from a local department store and want to

know if they are alright before I plant the rest of the bag? They had a test

date of August, 1978.

R.W. Carrollton

The seed you purchased were also tested from a store sample hi late

September, 1978, and indicated a germination percentage of 85. The pro

blems you are experiencing are probably due to weather conditions.

I have problems with my exterminator company. I have two paid contracts, the initial fee and the renewal, but I keep getting bills and they won't inspect my house.
B. S. Savannah
We checked with the exterminator company and the payment problem did
not originate with their office, but with the finance company through which
you made your arrangements. You will need to contact the finance company
about the problem. Also, an inspector from the exterminator's office should
be contacting you.

I bought some carrots last week that tasted very bitter. What would cause this unpleasant flavor?
S.U. Waycross Without knowing more about the carrots, we can't give you a full diag
nosis. However, weather conditions do have an effect on produce and a prolonged drought could cause the bitter taste you experienced. Another
factor is the age of the carrots when picked.

Holiday Turkey
Supply Adequate
Despite reports that turkeys will be in short supply this Thanksgiving, it appears now that there w$ll be enough birds for every fable. Although turkey production was up this year, consumers have been eating more turkey which has slightly reduced the availability for the holiday season.
With increased consumer demand, you can expect increased prices too. Other traditional Thanksgiving foods, such as apples, cranberries, and sweet potatoes are reported in plentiful supply.
