Relief Loan Payments Good Looking Shrubbery
Farmers Take
Protest To D.C.
I was pleased to be invited and to go to Washington last Wednesday (January 18) to meet with farmers, legislators and other agricultural leaders to discuss the farmers' plight.
Three of our state representatives, Henry Reaves, Bobby
Long, and Bob Patten also went to the nation's, capitol for the meeting. While there we visited with Deputy Under Secretary of Agriculture John White and other U.S.D.A. officials to discuss the farmers' problems. It especially pleased me to see farmers taking their problems and proposals to our nation's capitol -- the only place where anything concrete can be done to alleviate the untenable cost-price squeeze farmers are faced with. As I have said time and again, I support the farmer protest objectives. I believe farmers must have assurances of a fair and equitable return on their investment. However, other than offer support, there is nothing the Georgia Department of Agriculture or the Commissioner or Governor or the State Legislature can do to change federal programs and actions that have led to the crisis farmers face today. Loan programs, support prices, allotments, import-export policies, etc. are all decided upon and established in Washington, not Atlanta. I do believe, however, the protests and tractorcades have been beneficial as a good and effective way of letting consumers, congressmen, state and other government officials know about and understand the problems of American agriculture. Our Congressmen also expressed appreciation for the farmer trips to Washington as it helps muster support from urban Congressmen for improved farm programs. The trip also gave me the opportunity to talk with scores of farmers about how to obtain their specific objectives. These farmers and I are in agreement on basic issues. The only area I have not given them

Ga. Peanut Show
To Open In Tjfton
The Georgia Peanut Farm Show opens its second exhibition February 15th at Tifton's Rural Development Center. The program, sponsored by the Georgia Peanut Commission, is designed to update growers on advances in production methods and related subjects.
For information write the Georgia Peanut Commission, P. O. Box 967, Tifton 31794, or call 912/386-3470.
One of the most common horticultural questions is when to prune to save a plant's bloom buds. A general guide is to prune plants that flower early in the spring azaleas, forsythia, etc. immediately after they bloom.
On the other hand plants that bloom after May crepe myrtle, althea, etc. should be pruned early in the spring just before growth starts. Heavy pruning should not be performed in late summer or early fall because of the risk of stimulating new growth which would be susceptible to winter injury.
Most plants should not be sheared or cut in the shape of a ball. Some exceptions to this rule are Dwarf Yaupon, Heller Holly, and flex cornuta rotunda. These plants have so many branches so close together that it is impractical to prune individual branches.
To prevent this sheared or rounded effect on other plants, individual limbs should be pruned. Select those branches that extend above the desired height of the plant and cut those branches back below the desired height. These cuts are

New Peanut Variety
Excels In Production
'Early Bunch', a new fastermaturing, higher-yielding peanut variety is now available after years of research and testing.
In six years of testing at Tifton, the average yield of the new variety exceeded Florigiant's by 12 percent and Florunner's by 5 percent. 'Early Bunch' shells out at an average of 2 percent higher than the other two varieties. In addition, the percentage of extra-large kernels is higher than for Florigiant.
Developed by a joint effort of Florida and Georgia Agricultural Experiment Stations, plant breeders explain that the new variety was developed to offset the decline in harvested peanut acreage in the Southeast since the Florunner variety was released in 1969.
For information on obtaining seed for 'Early Bunch' write Georgia Seed Development Commission, Box 164A, Whitehall Road, Athens 30601.

Gladiolus are beautiful cut flowers. They are used extensively by florist shops in arrangements and displays because of their availability, variety of color and long-lasting blooms.
Glads became an overnight sensation in England, and America soon thereafter, when Queen Victoria paid a state visit to France in the mid 1800's. While visiting the Royal gardens near Paris she saw clumps of gladiolus blooming among the lowergrowing plants. The Queen was so taken with the flowers she ordered glads used as decorations in her own palace.
Since then, glads have increased in popularity and more gardeners are including them in their flower beds each year. To provide a continuous supply of flowering glads, planting should begin in February in South Georgia and can be continued through early August. In North Georgia, wait until early March to start planting and finish by mid-July.
Glads are slim, upright growing plants making them suitable to plant in clumps, about 4 inches apart, or squeeze between other flowers. They should be planted in well-drained soil, preferably in full sunlight.
Gladiolus bulbs, correctly called corms, should be dug for winter storage and replanted the following year. To reduce disease, do not plant in same location year after year. A three year rotation is recommended.
Besides their easy cultivation, the best reason to grow glads is to cut them. The flowers start opening from the base and the florets will continue to open inside up to ten days after cutting.
Low-Cost Beef Low-cost cuts of beef are usually less tender and need to be boiled, stewed, pot roasted or braised, according to Extension Service foods and nutrition specialists.

Shrubbery Tree Sale Raises Funds

called pruning back into the plant. All pruning cuts should be made just above a leaf bud. Hand pruners, called snips, can be used to prune most plants. Hedge shears are used on those plants that are sheared.
Winter is the time to evaluate the home landscape and make decisions on which plants have gotten too big. Then a decision has to be made about whether to replace the plant or restructure it with extensive pruning. Extensive pruning will be the answer in many cases.
A common mistake homeowners make in cutting back overgrown shrubs is that they don't cut them back far enough. Cutting a plant that is misshapen back to half its height will generally not correct the problem. It is important to remember that new growth after pruning generally occurs very close to where the cuts were made. As a result, to
reconstruct a plant from the ground up, it should be cut back six to twelve inches above ground level.
Overgrown shrubs should be cut back in late winter or early spring. Many plants will grow back to an acceptable size in four to five months.
Some plants that should not be cut back drastically are boxwoods and junipers. Boxwoods grow back slowly after severe cutting. Junipers often die when cut back to the ground.
Some examples of overgrown plants that respond well to this extensive pruning are azaleas, Japanese hollies, Chinese hollies, and crepe myrtle.
Pruning paint should be applied to all large stumps (those over 1/2" in diameter).
These plants should be fertilized normally as if the plants had not been pruned.

For Mentally Retarded
A dogwood tree sale to raise funds for the mentally retarded is being sponsored by the Junior Conference of the Georgia Federation of Women's Clubs February 4-11.
The trees, cornus florida variety, are between four and six feet tall and cost $5.00 each plus $1.00 shipping for each tree ordered.
For additional information contact your local women's club or write Susan Wolff, Georgia Association for Retarded Citizens, 1575 Phoenix Blvd., Suite No. 8, Atlanta 30349.
Commissioner Tommy Irvin, Georgia Department of Agriculture, Honorary State Chairman, Bryan Bannister and Judi Rogers, Junior Director, Georgia Federation of Women's Clubs plant first Dogwood tree of the drive on the Capitol lawn.
To improve swine production and lower costs, scientists at the Coastal Plain Experiment Station are trying to determine what makes sows happy. Animal scientist Dr. Otho Hale has found that pregnant pigs are a lot happier after a weekly bath. Also under investigation are different types of
confinements, restraining devices and exercise.

Farmers
(Continued From Page 1)
the support that some have asked is the strike.
Specifically, I urge more onfarm storage facilities for holding grain and other non-perishable crops during times of low market prices. I have also urged Congress and other government officials to develop and place more emphasis on farm exports. At the same time, Congress should take immediate action to stop importing any commodity such as beef, during times when we have more than adequate supply, competing unfairly with American produced farm products.
In addition, we need to try to convince the White House that the State Department and other federal agencies should not be dictating farm export policy. We should also discontinue the use of tax dollars for agricultural development in other countries when such development will result in direct competition with our own farm products such as cotton, tobacco and palm oil (competes with soybeans). Such programs are frequently developed through the World Bank under the guise of helping poor countries develop their natural resources.
I do believe, however, that most o'f the rank and file farmers, as well as many in the American Agriculture movement, have come to realize that we who serve them in elected state and federal offices are their friends and not their adversaries.
