GAEHE Promotes
Excellence In. Ga.
Life-styles are constantly changing. To meet the educational needs of her clientele, the county extension home economist must be a competent professional.
Time marches on, and with it, those "good ole days" when things
were slower and less demanding. The county extension home economist must be well trained to keep pace with the best ofthe'70's.
Who are "we"? The Georgia Association of Extension Home Economists has some 200 members from Georgia's marshland counties to our majestic mountains.
(Our guest columnist this week is Jean G. Bauerband, President of the Georgia Association of Extension Home Economists, 506 County Administration Bldg., Atlanta
30303.)__________________
GAEHE was organized in 1932, with 92 home demonstration agents as charter members. From that date, the organization has continued to promote professional excellence.
Our professional goals encourage professional growth through research and study, continued professional improvement, maintaining an interest in public affairs, and strenghthening our image.
We've blended our traditional sponsorship of the 4-H home management project with an extension agent tour to promote an exchange of Extension philosophy and programming ideas. This is sponsored jointly with Extension's two other professional associations.
Extension home economists employed three years or less are recognized for their innovative programming with the annual Young Professional Award.
Communications are vital to the role of an extension home economist. To recognize this, three media awards are presented: newsletter, news column, and radio tapes.
State citations are presented to home economists whose job performances are outstanding. National awards are the culmination of this state-wide recognition.

New Marking Technique
Combats Farm Theft Losses
A new system of marking farm equipment, has been introduced to
Governor Busbee marks the first tractor to be included in the equipment identification project.
help Georgia farmers combat losses due to theft. The new Farm Equipment Marking Program also will help law enforcement agencies trace stolen equipment.
The new service is available free to all farmers throughout the state. The uniform numbering system is based on a 10-character identification number. Numbers issued can immediately identify the state, county and owner of any marked piece of equipment.
Sheriffs in each of Georgia's 159 counties are being furnished materials for each farmer participating in the program. Farmers will register their I.D. numbers, names and addresses with the sheriff's office.
The new program is a combined effort of the Georgia Sheriff's Association, the Georgia Farm , Bureau and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation. Contact your local sheriff for information on protecting your farm equipment.
Enclosed is a picture of a bee's nest that is on my property. Can you tell me what kind of honey might be inside and the best way to get it out?
B.T. Tifton After examining the photograph you mailed, I wouldn't advise looking for honey in a wasp nest. ****
Last week while on vacation, I stopped at a gas station in Florida and got a tank full of water. Three other cars stopped on the road at about the same place. I filled out some papers, but haven't heard anything.
L.M. Decatur We have contacted the Florida
Department of Agriculture, which
has jurisdiction over the station. The station has filed a claim with its
insurance company and the forms
you completed should soon net results.

THE MARKET BULLETIN
Wednesday, August 9,1978
Dear Editor,
I have a complaint against one of your advertisers. I called a man about sheep he advertised in the MARKET BULLETIN. I made three long distance phone calls, agreed to buy the sheep, got directions and told him when I would be there. I drove 235 miles and he had sold the sheep. A simple phone call would have saved me the expense of the trip as well as loss of time from work.
Mr. C. R. Summer Route 3, Box 201 Tifton, Georgia 31794

THE MARKET BULLETIN
Horses,
mules, ponies
for sale
People who are buying and breeding horses should ask to see the registration papers before leaving premises. The MARKET BULLETIN has received numerous complaints of people who buy a horse with the seller promising to send papers later and the papers never appear. The MARKET BULLETIN has no jurisdiction over such instances. A smart buyer and or person breeding a mare will ask to see the papers first.
In order to qualify to advertise horses, horse farmers should have had the livestock advertised in their possession 60 days or more before offering it for sale through this publication.
All horses offered for advertisement through the Market Bulletin should have a negative coggin test within the past 60 days.
AT STUD
At Stud notices will be published in the BULLETIN four times a year, in January, April, July and October. Word limit for these ads is 35 words which must also include the advertisers' name and address. Next issue will be October 4, deadline September 27.

MYSTERY PIE CORRECTION
The food industry recommends that you never heat any type of food in an unopened can, because there is danger of it exploding.
To prepare the recipe using condensed milk in a carmelcolored custard thickness; preheat oven to 425 degrees F.; pour 1 can sweetened condensed milk into an 8 inch glass pie plate. Cover with foil and place it in a shallow pan of hot water. Bake for 1 hour or until thick and slightly carmel-colored. Remove foil; cool and chill before serving.
HOTTAMALES
Boil a chicken until tender and salt while boiling. Separate the meat from the bones and chop fine. Season to taste with cayenne pepper and a little garlic (or garlic salt). Add enough water to a cupful of cornmeal to make a paste. Roll chicken into small rolls, finger size, and roll them in the meal paste. Wash six inch lengths of inner corn shucks in boiling water. Wrap each tamale in a shuck. Put 2 or 3 Mexican peppers in the liquid where the chicken was cooked. Put in the tamales and boil for 15 minutes. You can add a few hard boiled eggs chopped fine to the heat. Serve hot.

THE MARKET BULLETIN
Fall Vegetable Gardens,
Last Chance For 1978
Yuccas are large plants with stiff, spikey leaves. They look like a bouquet of narrow swords. The width of the leaves vary with the different species.
Some varieties have small threads trailing from their edges while others have sharp dagger-like points. The
whole appearance of the plant is cactuslike.
The most beautiful part of the plant, though, is the cream-colored flowers produced on a tall stalk from the middle of the plant. The flowers can be small but can be as large as three inches across.
The American Indians used yucca for food, soap and to make decorative objects. The waxy petals were used to enhance a summer meal.
The roots produce a fair substitute for soap. Crush well-washed roots with a hammer, swish around in warm water and suds will quickly appear.
As was the case in last years drought, many gardens have not survived this years dry summer. Fall vegetable gardens provide a second chance for gardening enthusiasts and those individuals who depend on their garden plots for fresh vegetables.
Some vegetables flourish in fall gardens. Cabbage, collards, turnips, mustard greens and rutabaga thrive in cool weather to the extent that they are commonly referred to as 'cole crops'.
Other crops such as okra, sweet potatoes and melons are not recommended for fall gardens. These plants have longer growth cycles necessary to reach maturity and as such are unsuitable.
Some Georgia vegetables have actually thrived in this year's dry summer. Ms. Inez Rainwater of Lithia Springs was surprised by this 3 pound 1 ounce tomato which she organically grew with cotton seed meal, bone meal and compost.
GAEHE Promotes
(Continued From Page 1)
To our many friends outside the Extension Service, we give an annual Friend of Extension Home Economics and Communications Award.
GAEHE members are encouraged to apply for educational fellowships to continue their professional growth. There are several national scholarships just for the extension home economist.
GAEHE presented an educational program, "Living So Easy, So Elegantly," for Georgia's Association of County Commissioners' convention.
This year's annual GAEHE Meeting will be September 12-14. The emphasis will be "Extension Revolves Around You."
Georgia's some 200 Home Economists are an involved, visible, and viable group whose classrooms have no walls.
Gardeners should use transplants instead of attempting regular seeding whenever possible. This is especially true with plants such as tomatoes, as it normally takes from six to eight weeks just to produce a seedling from germination.
An easy method of reusing tomato plants is to sucker them. (July 26, 1978 MARKET BULLETIN). This process involves plucking the small stem between the main stalk and a leaf, and allowing it to root in water until it can be planted. Egg plants and peppers may also be suckered.
Root crops such as carrots, onions and beets are productive in the fall. Broccoli which is a relative newcomer to Georgia is also easy to grow and can be harvested until mid-November even in North Georgia.
Late summer and early fall months represent periods of increased insect numbers. Insect populations tend to peak at this point as a result of gradual reproduction cycles.
Infestation of bugs in old plants in the garden should be eradicated before planting the fall garden or the insects will simply move to the new crops. Insects have fewer green crops on which to feed in the fall months and are naturally attracted
to fresh crops. As a result, fall gardens must be especially protected against insect pests.

LANDSCAPE TIP
Got a spot in the yard where grass or living ground covers won't grow? Don't give up on them. Extension Service specialists say there are several materials that can be used to dress up bare or difficult areas. They mentioned such things as small rocks, pebbles, crushed marble, shredded tree bark, wood chips and pine needles.
