Four-H starts with the individual young person in recognition of the fact that the future of America rests on the ability of our youth to become self-directing, productive and contributing members of society. Since its inception early in the 20th century, Georgia 4-H's aim and purpose has remained to help the individual 4-H'er develop these traits.
Today's society is one of rapid change and today's youth must face
forces and problems that were undreamed of in the infancy of Georgia 4-H. Georgia 4-H has met the challenges of change and is today one of the strongest and most effective youth programs in the country. We are fully aware, however, that we will not be able to rest on our

past accomplishments and glory. We must continually improve, update and modernize to remain a viable, effective youth organization.
Last year, over 200,000 Georgia youth were enrolled in the 4-H Club. Of this number, 17 percent lived on farms and 22 percent lived in the city with the remaining 61 percent living in rural non-farm areas. These 200,000 4-H'ers enrolled in 269,811 projects valued at approximately $15 million.
Over 23,000 4-H'ers attended educational and recreational camps and workshops. Over 8,000 county project winners competed in district competition and over 300 4-H'ers competed for the right to represent Georgia at the National 4-H Congress.
Nearly $80,000 in state and national scholarships was awarded to Georgia 4-H'ers. Ten Georgia 4H'ers were named national winners and three were sectional winners. In short, 1977 was an excellent year for Georgia 4-H and all indications point to an even better year in 1978.

Human brucellosis is still considered an occupational risk. However, Georgia is now looking forward to being certified free of brucellosis within the next 12 months, according to Dr. John A. Cobb, assistant commissioner

The Georgia Department of Agriculture recently hosted members of the Georgia Society of Farm Managers and Rural Appraisers. Members toured the brucellosis, seed and dairy labs and a number of other faculties in the Department in order to better understand the various services which are provided by the Georgia Department of Agriculture.

What are these beans? One friend said we could eat them and another said they were castor beans.
I. P. Augusta The beans you mailed us are jack beans. You're welcome to eat them, but the quality is poor. You were smart not to eat anything that might have been a cas*to*r*be*an.
My tomatoes are rotting on the ends before getting ripe. What causes this?
A. A. Clarkesville Sounds like your tomatoes have blossom end rot. If you had included your address, we'd have been glad to send you some printed information.

Dear Editor: How can I find out when a livestock sale in Gum-
ming is going to be held? You don't have it listed in your BULLETIN calendar but I know there is one up there.
Harley Reeves Stockbridge, Georgia (Editor's note: We publish livestock sales which occur on a regular basis (i.e. every Tuesday, first and third Friday etc.) in our 'clip and save' calendar. See page 7. If the sale you are looking for is not listed in this calendar or in our regular BULLETIN calendar call us and we will be happy to help you.)
Dear Editor: Recently as I was looking for old photographs, I
came across a copy of the MARKET BULLETIN, dated Thursday, March 2, 1933. The ink and paper were just as if they had been printed yesterday. I was surprised at the clarity of the print and the condition of the paper. My family has enjoyed your paper all these years and are still enjoying it.

Horses, mules, ponies

for sale

People who are buying and breeding horses should ask to see the registration papers before leaving premises. The MARKET BULLETIN has received numerous complaints of people who buy a horse with the seller promising to send papers later and the papers never appear. The MARKET BULLETIN has no jurisdiction over such instances. A smart buyer and or person breeding a mare will ask to see the papers first.
In order to qualify to advertise horses, horse farmers should have had the livestock advertised in their possession 60 days or more before offering it for sale through this publication.
All horses offered for advertisement through the Market Bulletin should have a negative coggin test within the past 60 days.
AT STUD
At Stud notices will be published in the BULLETIN four times a year, in January, April, July and October. Word limit for these ads is 35 words which must also include the advertisers' name and address. Next issue will be October 4, deadline September 27.

Georgia's Untapped Resource - Gum Naval Stores

The collecting and .processing of crude gum, tar, pitch and turpentine, or "naval stores", is one of the oldest professions known to man. In 1977, Georgia produced 86 percent of gum naval stores in the U.S., which in turn produces about half of the total world supply.
Gum naval stores are obtained from crude pine gum known as "oleoresin", by wounding live longleaf or slash pine trees. The fresh wound is treated with a spray of sulfuric acid solution. Metal cups are then hung on the trees to collect the gum.
Production
In regard to production potential, the surface has hardly been scratched in Georgia. There are 156 million trees available now for gum naval stores production within the state. At present, less than three percent are being worked.
Crude gum yields in 1977 produced 51,140 drums of gum rosin and 726,500 gallons of turpentine from Georgia pines. Revenues obtained from ihe gum rosin were valued at $6.7 million and the turpentine at $1 million.
History
Predating the Christian Era in the Mediterranean countries, naval stores were once used in the making of varnish for mummy cases in ancient Egypt. The pitch used by Noah for building his Ark was a form of naval stores.
Before the days of steamships, travel across the seas was done by sailing vessels. The power of nations depended upon trade with other countries and thus the seaworthiness of the ships carrying on the trade.
Tar, pitch and turpentine were used to waterproof and preserve the

were caulked with bark and pitch to make them watertight. Thus was born the term "naval stores".
In the search for new industries in the south after the Civil War, one of the most feasible for Georgians to develop was that of lumber and naval stores. With the redevelopment of the state's railroad network, sawmills and turpentine distilleries moved into the vast forests of slash and longleaf pines in southwest
Georgia.
In 1872 H.H. Tift opened the industry around what became Tifton. In 1875, Wiley Clements appeared from North Carolina to build the first distillery in Worth County.

Uses
Today, the two basic naval stores products of rosin and turpentine are refined and found in hundreds of items. Laundry soaps, gloss oils, flat wall paints, varnishes and lacquers, waterproofing compounds, coating for adhesive tape, matches, munitions, cements, plastic wood, shoemakers wax, marking crayons, electrical insulating compounds and many other items contain naval stores.

purpose is to promote all phases of gum naval stores production and marketing, and it is instrumental in research, credit, conservation and technical assistance for gum naval stores producers.
In recent years, the Georgia Forestry Commission has made available high gum yielding slash pine seedlings to Georgia landowners. It is estimated that these trees will yield from 50 to 100 percent more gum and put on 12 percent more growth than regular seedling stock, to further enhance the gum naval stores potential within the state.
Landowners could profit from acreage of slash and longleaf pines otherwise sitting idle. At present market prices, with good workmanship practices, a single turpentine face, (tree producing raw gum) will gross $1.80 per year.
When multiplied by hundreds of trees and a minimum of financial outlay, the profit potential rises steadily. All that remains to be provided is raw labor.
For those individuals and landowners interested in cultivating this untapped resource, contact the Georgia Forestry Commission in your county. A commission forester will be assigned to investigate your property and advise you of the gum naval stores potential of your trees.

fectiveness of Georgia 4-H is the role of the volunteer leader. Last year nearly 5,000 volunteer leaders worked with county Extension agents and devoted their time and talent to guide and inspire Georgia 4-H'ers.
These volunteer leaders are critical to program effectiveness and if Georgia is to maintain its position as one of the top 4-H states in the nation, we must have substantially more volunteer leaders.
Georgia 4-H has, over the years, enjoyed tremendous support from individuals, organizations and businesses throughout the state. We thank ypu for your previous support and encourage you to join hands with your local extension agents, program assistants, volunteer leaders and donors to assist Georgia 4H'ers in their efforts to "Make The Best Better."

Bees Important
Bees are essential for good pollination of such crops as cantaloupes, cucumbers, squash and watermelons, says Jim Barber, Extension Service horticulturist.
Dangerous Task
One of the more dangerous tasks around the house is installing a CB or TV antenna. More than half of all electrocutions reported to the U. S. Consumer Product Safety Commission involve antennas.

Blueberry plants which are advertised as 1 to 2 year old plants are on the average 8 to 12 inches tall. more undulant fever from swine brucella because farmers more often help with the farrowing of young pigs than cattle, and we have not had
any accelerated programs to control this situation in the past."
Brucellosis is characterized in humans by the onset of fever, chills, sweating and general body aches and pains similar to flu symptoms. Weakness bordering on exhaustion is usually the most
outstanding complaint. Left untreated, human bru-
cellosis may result in a debilitating illness of long duration and occasionally death. According to medical reports, there is no dependable or practical form of drug thera-
py for animal cases, but antibiotics are effective in treating human cases.

One of the first major eradication programs for cattle disease in the U.S. dealt with tuberculosis. At one point, TB was the number one killer of humans in the country.

THE MARKET BULLETIN

In many European countries, costmary is dedicated to the Virgin Mary but it is also associated with Mary Magdalene. From this association it derives its common name 'Sweet Mary'.
Early American colonists used the leaves of costmary as bookmarkers, especially in their Bibles and hence it received another nickname - 'Bible Leaf.
The English knew costmary as 'alecost' because it was once used to flavor beer and ale. Greek physicians thought it had great curative powers but there is no record of what they thought it would cure. Costmary was probably one of the strewing herbs strewn on floors and used for scent ing the washing water at meals.
Costmary is a perennial with unu sually large leaves. The toothed edge leaves are normally about seven inches long. Although the appear ance of the plant is somewhat weedy, the sweet scent of the foliage makes it a pleasant herb for the garden.
This is an easy herb to grow and is propagated by division, seed and by underground runners. It prefers sun or partial shade and ordinary welldrained garden soil.
Costmary leaves are frequently placed in drawers and closets to give linens a fresh aroma.
Grandpa's
Garden
Tomatoes are the number one vegetable grown by home gardeners so lots of people have suggestions as to how to improve the crop. Roz Anderson (DeKalb County) recommends using a funeral wreath stand to support tomato vines. The plants can lean back and relax and grow big heavy tomatoes. And, come fall, you have a permanent stand you can save for next year.
Tomatoes grown near or among roses are reported to eliminate black spot on the roses. The tomato leaves contain solanine which is beneficial in combating black spot disease. If you prefer not to grow tomatoes in your rose garden, grind up tomato leaves with a little water in the blender. To one pint of this solution add five pints of water and one ounce of corn starch. Keep solution refrigerated and spray roses once a week.
Mrs. H. L. Burden, Zebulon, recommends sprinkling cabbages with a little corn meal in the top. This will kill any worms that might attack the cabbage. She also suggests making a thick lather of soap flakes and applying to collards. This keeps the worms off the collards.
Be careful when you pour out the ice cream salt after making a churn full. Wherever the salt falls it will kill the grass and nothing will grow there again!

Governor George Busbee proclaimed August 6-12 as Apple Week in Georgia. Witnessing the signing are: [1-r] Barr Miller, Chairman of the Georgia Apple Commission; Joy Burgess, Georgia Apple Queen; Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin; and Lanny Williams, Director of the Commodities Promotion Division, Georgia Department of Agriculture.
Chairman Miller announced that the Georgia apple crop is equal in volume to last year's but that the number of apples packed this season will probably surpass last year's total. The quality and size of the current crop is outstanding, according to Miller.
Georgia apples are the first fresh apples to reach the market each year and harvest has begun in middle Georgia and will move into the mountain regions of the state soon.

Is it wrong for a store to advertise a special price on a side of beef, and then when you get into the store they suggest you purchase another grade at three times the cost?
B.T. Decatur It is not only wrong, it is illegal. This practice is known as bait and switch. If you have been a victim of this tactic or someone has attempted to trick you, please send us the details. * * * *
Is there a commercial rabbit processing plant near me? L.M. Macon
No, the last rabbit processing plant in Georgia closed earlier this year and most surrounding states no longer have any in operation.

Is the treatment the same for all fence posts? I do not understand the reasons for the cost variations I have encountered.
W. D. McRae Two methods of treatment are used on wood intended for fence posts and this could be a factor in determining cost. Posts must be branded to identify the producer and amount of preservatives used.
