Cattlemen Oppose
More Beef Imports
The beef cattle farmers of Georgia, along with cattlemen throughout the country, were dealt a severe blow by President Carter when he raised the quota of beef to be imported from other countries by 200 million pounds.
It is difficult for us to understand why the nation's number one
! ex-farmer would [ single out the cat| tie industry in his fight against inflation. He hardly raised his voice when the coal miners received a 40% wage increase, and he makes no real effort to curb soaring steel prices. All other facets of our economy have price increases running rampant,

but our president chose our industry as the sacrificial lamb for his inflation-fight altar.
President Carter was well informed about the cyclical nature of the cattle business, and he knows that for four years we sold calves for prices below the cost of production, costing cattle producers hundreds of millions of dollars.
Just as the supply of cattle was begining to match the demand, bringing a degree of profitability back to cattle producers, who for so long had received so little, President Carter dropped a bomb on our industry. He went against his vow to preserve free enterprise and have no government interference in our business. His action cost cattlemen from $70.00 to $100.00 per animal on every head we have to sell.
Our position is not entirely a selfish one. The President's action has upset the rebuilding phase of the cattle industry throughout the United States, and the ultimate real loser will be "Ms. John Q. Consumer."
It is a crying shame to us farmers that our government is wholeheartedly dedicated to a cheap food policy regardless of what harm it does to those producing food. Someday when it is too late, the politicians and bureaucrats in Washington will realize that the

Corn Export Contract
Signed At Ga. Capital
A contract to export 101,000 metric tons of U.S. corn to Taiwan was signed July 5 at the state capital. The group of Taiwanese businessmen contracted to pay $11.6 million for corn to be used as fodder in the Republic of China.
"Although some of the 101,000 metric tons will be Georgia corn, due to the existing drought in our state, much of the shipment will come from other states," according to Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin.
The Taiwan delegation met at the capital to finalize the corn contracts due to Georgia's increasing importance as an agricultural exporter.
This is the second agricultural buying trip to Georgia from Taiwan. In February a similar mission bought 54,000 metric tons of Georgia soybeans valued at $12.5 million.

Trapping The Boll Weevil

Keeps Researchers Busy

One of the greatest drawbacks in cotton production is the heavy infesta-

tion of pests, especially the boll weevil. An ingenious new device may pro-

vide some much needed help according to entomologists at the U.S. Depart-

ment of Agriculture,

screen wire, a small plastic box, a

cigarette filter and a dab of paint,

with a total cost of about 35 cents.

As yet, the trap is untested in

commercial use. USDA's Animal and

Plant Health Inspection Service

(APHIS) is participating in a co-

operative boll weevil eradication

trial in some southern states to de-

termine its effectiveness.

Many of the entomologists are

"cautiously optimistic" that this new

contraption can be effective in help-

ing to rid Georgia of this destructive

pest when backed up by a program

of additional deterrents.

These additional preventative

measures would include pesticides

treatments, defoliation of cotton

plants after harvest, release of ste-

rile weevils, and of course, the boll

weevil traps.

The base of the trap is a plastic

cup, the size usually used to serve

We recently had some beef slaughtered and are having some difficulty with the processing plant. The meat was aged for several weeks, but then apparently was not stored properly as a faint odor was present when we picked it up.
P.B. Dalton In talking with you and the processor, we learned that you requested the meat be aged for a longer period than is recommended for the grade. So, although it was refrigerated, deterioration had already begun during the prolonged aging process.

peach recipe before it is too late for this season. Fry peaches just as you would apples; don't peel the
peaches. When you get ready to use them beat them with mixer. The peaches taste just like dried peaches and make delicious fried pies. The more tart the peach the better they are. I put mine in sealed freezer bags and freeze. Fried apples do not have this dried fruit taste but peaches do.

HOW TO MAKE PEACH JUICE
1 /2 bushel real ripe peaches, add sugar if desired. Mash thoroughly, add 1/2 gallon of water, cook until done. Strain off juice, put back in pan let come to a boil, pour in jar and seal. Makes 9 qts.

CHERRY SALAD

1/2 Cap water

1 (6 oz. pkg.) cherry

1 cup chopped pecans

gelatin

6 oz. bottle of cola

1 can cherry pie filling

1 16 oz. can crushed

pineapple

Add water to pie filling and boil for 5 minutes.

Add box of cherry gelatin while first mixture is

still hot. Set aside to cool. When cool, add pine-

apple, chopped pecans, and cola. Pour into dish

and chill.

1 c. sugar

1 egg white

1 c. butter

3 tablespoons water

3 egg yolks

1 tsp. vanilla

Cream butter and sugar as if you would for

cake, add egg yolks and white and beat until

foamy, add water and flavoring. Beat until well

mixed. Pour into raw crust. This pie is delicious.

When done it may be covered with favorite pre-

serves and meringue. Brown meringue.

STRETCHING BUTTERMILK

Buy a quart of cultured buttermilk from the store. Divide it into four quart-size mason jars. Fill each jar to the top with fresh warm goat milk*, cap loosely and let the jar stand overnight at room temperature. In the morning you'll have a gallon of fresh buttermilk to refrigerate and use at your leisure. And here's the pay-off use the last of each batch to start a new batch and you can go on indefinitely.

1 -8 oz. carton sour cream 1/2 c. chopped water

chesnuts (optional)

Melt oleo in skillet, add the herb dressing until

coated, place 1/2 of the herb dressing in a large

pyrex dish. Blend together the squash - soup-

sour cream and chesnuts. Cover with remaining

herb dressing. Bake in 350 degree oven for 30 to

35 minutes. Serves 8.

CABBAGE PICKLES

3 Irg. heads cabbage

1 stalk celery

21/2 to 3 Ib. onions

5 Ibs. sugar

2 red bell peppers or 1 jar 1 tsp. salt

pimento

Tumeric to color

1 qt. vinegar

1/2 box mustard seed

1 at. mustard

1/2 box pickling spices

Cut cabbage, pepper, celery and onions. Put

mustard seed and pickling spice in cloth bag.

Mix all ingredients and boil 15 min. Mix 1 cup

flour and water to make a thin paste. Add to pic-

kles to thicken stirring constantly to keep from

sticking. Remove from heat and seal in sterilized

jars.

MASHED POTATO CANDY
Boil med. size potato until done. Take off peeling and mash well w/fork. Put in a bowl and start putting in powdered sugar, mix until you can make a ball, roll with your hand. Place it on a rolling pin just like you would dough. Use powdered sugar instead of flour. When rolled out, put peanut butter over it or nuts, jam, jelly or preserves. After spreading over ball, roll it with your hands just like a jelly roll and slice it with a knife and lay on platter. Ready to eat, you can put it in the refrigerator for keeping.

LEMON CRUNCH POUND CAKE

1 3/4 cup sugar

1 cup oil

2 cups cake flour

5 large eggs

2 teaspoons lemon

flavoring

Cream sugar and oil together thoroughly. Add

eggs one at a time beating well after each addi-

tion. Add the flavoring then the cake flour that

has been sifted four times. Add in four parts.

Bake in a tube pan for 1 hour at 350 degree F.

This cake has a real crunchy top and is oh so

good.

QUEEN'S FAVORITE COBBLER
Prepare by using the following ingredients: Melt 1 stick of Margarine in an average size dish (approximately 9x12 inches). Add 1 cup of sweet milk to 1 cup of self-rising flour and 1 cup of sugar. Mix these 3 ingredients thoroughly and add to the melted Oleo. Add 4 cups of sliced peaches (sweetened to taste) and do not stir. Bake at 375 F. for approximately 40 minutes or until browning is noted.
This is excellent served while warm. For extra flavor, top with whipped cream or vanilla ice cream. NOTE: Canned or frozen peaches may be substituted for fresh. If plain flour is used, add 2 teaspoons of baking powder.

Blueberry plants which are advertised as 1 to 2 year old plants are on the average 8 to 12 inches tall. Horticulturists advise us that it takes an average of 3 more years before the blueberry plant will produce enough blueberries to make a pie. Garden
Garlic planted around the vegeta ble garden will discourage aphids and other garden pests. Rose bush es, in particular benefit from base plantings of garlic.
To get rid of leaf-eating grasshop pers, half fill a quart jar with 10 percent molasses and 90 percent water. Put the jar where the grass hoppers are doing their most dama ge. To prevent grasshoppers next year, rotate your soil in the fall be cause they lay their eggs in late summer in the top 3" of soil.
When those onions you bought at the store go soft don't throw them out -- plant them. Many gardeners say they produce the finest green onions ever. Also, to save money, you can grow your own onion sets by planting onion seed in late July. Plant the seed thick and fertilize well. Dry the small bulbs just like re gular onions and store indoors until ready to replant.
We have received many requests for oldtimey garden hints. While most of these methods have not been 'research-tested' they have withstood the test of time. If you have hints to share with our readers, please let us know.

However, eggs must be sold at the labeled grade which in hot weather can change rapidly if the temperature is not controlled. reason the average American can afford new cars, television sets, and other luxuries, is the efficiency of the American farmer. He does his job so well that only a small part of the American's average annual in come has to go for food.
We as cattlemen took our four years of losses without ever seeking government help. During that period we asked for neither charity nor parity! We did not want Wash ington's nose in our business when times were so bad, and we wish we had some means of keeping it out of our business now.
All of this nation's cattlemen are angry and disappointed over this latest turn of events. Yet we are more determined than ever to do all within our power to improve the stability of our prices. We plan to accomplish this by (1) uniting all fac ets of our industry to promote our product; (2) marketing our product in an orderly way; and (3) doing a good job in our public relations work by letting the consumers know that we expect to continue providing them with top quality beef at the cheapest possible price, yet a high enough price for us to remain in business.

Comfrey is an old herb known to many as 'knit-bone' because it has been beneficial in the cure of healing broken bones. A poultice of comfrey applied to a broken bone will mini mize the swelling thereby allowing the bones to 'knit'.
But comfrey has other uses as well. It makes a delicious dish of greens, rich in calcium and other nu trients; and to some, makes a sooth ing tonic to cure a nervous stomach.
Comfrey is not a native American herb. It is thought to come from Eng land and therefore our herbals con tain little information about this herb. In England, however, the books are full of tales about how this miracle herb has healed broken bones, car buncles, wounds and swollen brui ses.
The plant itself grows about two feet tall. The lower leaves look like a donkey's ears and are covered with fine hairs. The root is large and black outside and white inside. It is fleshy and very mucilaginous.
In recent years, researchers in Eu rope have discovered that livestock fed comfrey were healthier and gain ed weight faster.
Comfrey is not widely known in this country but is available through some specialized nurseries and occasion ally through advertisements in the MARKET BULLETIN. Since the lea ves, stem and root are all non-poi sonous the dosage is considered safe.
As a perennial, comfrey will return every year in the garden. Although it is not prized for its appearance, it is certainly valued for its curative pow ers.
Tomato Problem
Why do tomato plants drop their blossoms? Extension Service horti culturists say it's mainly a tempera ture problem. Some tomatoes have a very narrow temperature range -- especially at night -- for setting fruit. It has to get above 55 degrees for at least part of the night for the first fruit set on some varieties. On the other hand, if nighttime tem peratures during the summer get above 75 degrees, tomato blossoms may drop off.

Sneaky Snakes Hide

Until You Find Them

More than 50 different varieties of snakes are found in Georgia's lakes, streams, mountains and farmlands. Of these only nine, or less than 20 per cent, are poisonous but all can be avoided with a minimum of understanding
and pre-planning.

Snakes, including venomous ones, are a necessary part of man's en vironment. They are a necessary link in the natural chain of events controlling pests. Most larger landdwelling snakes feed on rodents, while smaller varieties feed on in sects.
Poisonous snakes need to be con trolled but there are no chemicals registered for use against snakes either as poisons or repellents.
This means that the individual must control the environment around him to the extent necessary to make it unattractive to snakes.
Poisonous snakes found in Georgia include the Coral Snake, the Cop perhead, the Cottonmouth Water

water and cover. Rodents and insects are a stable
diet of snakes and should be re moved or exterminated. Stacked material provides hiding places for

snakes and their prey. These ma terials should be placed 12 or more inches above the ground or floor and away from walls.
Remove debris, trash and brush piles. Shrubbery and other debris should be kept away from founda tions and walls. Also, lawns should be mowed closely to the ground.
Streams and pond banks are extra-attractive to snakes. Keep these areas closely mowed with all undergrowth and bushes cut away. Rocky banks also provide shelter for

Trapping The Boll Weevil Keeps Researchers Busy

weevils. The screen wire is formed into an
open-ended cone, stapled to hold its shape, and firmly attached to the cup with paper clips. A circular opening is then cut in the bottom of a 2-inch square clear-plastic box, which is fused onto the cone with a soldering iron.
The cigarette filter is then placed inside the box. The filter is baited with a synthetic pheromone, a pow erful sex attractant emitted by males, which few weevils, male and female alike, can resist.
When the baited trap is placed in a cotton field, weevils smell the phe romone and fly to the gaudy trap, entering it from the bottom. They work their way up the cup, through the cone and into the box, a plastic prison from which there is no esca pe. The summer sun soon does them in. Dead weevils are removed and fresh bait is inserted when the traps are serviced at 10-day to 2-week in
tervals. The stubborn boll weevil has a
history of frustrating growers. The farmers have tried to kill them with

Today, only one class of insectici des is effective, the organophosphates. Should the boll weevil become resistant to these pesticides, the last effective control would be elimina
ted. The mere thought of losing control
of the boll weevil is enough to hasten new research. Not only has this pest survived every deterrent used thusfar, but it has destroyed an estima ted $12 billion of U.S. cotton in the
process. Results of the eradication trial
being conducted will be compared with those of a pest management trial in progress to determine which fs most feasible and economical to use.
