Regular, hot nutritious meals are essential to maintaining good health, but many of Georgia's half million older people are not able to meet even their basic nutritional requirements on a regular basis.
Some don't have the resources to buy the food they need, or cannot get
ito the grocery store easily. Some I do not have the skills to prepare a balanced meal which will assure good nutrition. ] Still others, living i alone, just do not j have the incentive to cook and eat alone, with no one to share in the dinnertime talk. The Department of Human Resources, through its Aging Administration Section, is assisting with a unique service, the Nutrition Program for the Elderly. Through a combination of federal, state and local resources there are now 142 locations around the state where older

people can get a well-balanced nutritious noon-day meal and share in companionship with other elderly people.
This program, however, includes much more than just a hot meal. Since many older people do not have access to transportation, arrangements are made to get participants to the congregate site. Shopping assistance is provided if needed, and nutrition education is offered, along with health and welfare counseling, escort services, and a wide variety of recreational activities.
The nutrition program, which is now available in generally all areas of the state, is an extremely popular one, and requires a wide range of financial supports. The people who take part in the program contribute on a voluntary basis to the cost of the meal.
Federal funds are authorized by Title VII of the Older Americans Act, and matching state and local money makes the program go further. The

Ferriamicide Proven Agriculture Suffers From

Safe Fire Ant Bait Intense Heat And No Rain

New test results predict that the fire ant bait, ferriamicide and its products, won't cause cancer in test

The heat wave which has held Georgia in its grip for the last few weeks is taking its toll on agricultural production. The corn crop, pasturelands and even chickens are suffering from the intense heat baking our state.

on mirex and its newest relative, ferriamicide, have come up negative. The new product replaced mirex June 30, 1978 when the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) ordered mirex phased out.
Mirex is regarded as a possible cancer-causing agent on the basis of preliminary tests. EPA also objected to mirex because it lingers in the environment.
Ferriamicide breaks down quickly and field tests show that the new product is nearly as effective in controlling fire ants.
EPA has granted an emergency permit for production of ferriamicide. They did, however, limit its usage to mound-to-mound application.

Record high temperatures coupled with the rain shortage have
reduced the soil moisture content in most areas to critical. Many corn fields have already been declared a total loss with other acreage hanging in the balance depending on immediate relief from rain.
Poultry farmers claim that up to 2 percent of their flock has died from the intense heat. In addition to the high mortality rate, egg production has been drastically affected because the birds won't eat.
Georgia farmers with pasture and feed grain supplies hard hit by recent weeks of hot, dry weather are reminded they may apply for financial help from the Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service. Any farmer who has sustained a 40 percent loss, including pastureland,

Now I know you busy and aint gotta lotta time, so I'll come to the point. Seein that pore old cryin cow
upset Loueller so bad that she cried and cried. This put her in the mind of all the unhappiness in the world, and being the purty little darlin she is, she decided to do something nice for the world.

COMMUNITY LIME PICKLES

Cut 3-4 pounds cucumbers across about 1/4 inch. Cover

with 1 cup lime and 1 gal. cold water solution about 1 inch

and soak overnight. Rinse 3 times, one hour apart in cold

water. (Use fresh lime because you may ruin your pickles

by chancing with old lime.)

Pickling Mix:

4 pints vinegar

1 teasp. whole cloves

5 Ibs. sugar

1 teasp. allspice

1 teasp. salt

(or pickles spice)

4 cinnamon sticks

1 teasp. celery seed

Soak cucumbers in this mixture overnight. Simmer 1

hour and pack in jars. Be sure pickling mixture covers

cucumbers. If entering in contest, strain the spices through

a cloth, not allowing any to be in the jars.

Coffee was first discovered in
northern Africa when shepherds
noticed their sheep stayed awake all
night after eating coffee leaves and
berries. After this discovery, coffee
became an important export item for
Arabia in the early 1200's. Coffee
comes from the Arabic word qahwah.
Before coffee was ever enjoyed as
a beverage it was used as a food and
medicine. Even today we are aware of the medicinal effects of coffee
such as its use to combat fatigue, and strengthen heart action. Army of-
ficers swear that coffee is in-
dispensable for troops to relieve
fatigue and improve the spirit.
Coffee did run into opposition
before it became universally popular.
In 1674 the Women's Petition against
Coffee, published in England,
reported that men who drink coffee
would produce inferior offspring.
It has recently become a fad to
grow a coffee tree as a novelty
houseplant. The chances, however, of this plant ever producing coffee
beans are minimal.
Coffee trees grow in hot tropical
climates, such as Brazil, Mexico, and
Africa. The tree grows to a height of 14 to 20 feet but commercial growers
usually shear the tree at 12 feet for
maximum production.

U. S. Department of Agriculture makes additional federal funds available for the purchase of American agricultural products to assist with food costs.
In addition to the Nutrition Program for the Elderly, the Aging Administration Section, which is a part of the Office of District Programs of the Department of Human Resources, provides for the Development of funding of programs and services through the establishment of Area Agencies on Aging.
The Aging Administration Section serves as a focal point in state government in all matters relating to aging through its functions of planning, evaluation, research, public information, training and man-power development, and administration of other grants.
The range of services offered through the grants program include home care services, transportation services, recreation and leisure-time activities, legal and nursing home ombudsman services, multi-purpose senior centers, employment opportunities, and short-term training for persons who work with aging programs.

Summer is watermelon time in Georgia. Not only is watermelon a delicious

summertime treat, but an average wedge supplies half of the daily recom-

mended intake of vitamins A and C. It also contains iron, a mineral import-

ant to good health.
Georgia is one of the leading watermelon producers in the country. We are ranked fourth in production nationwide and expect a bountiful crop this year.
Selecting Watermelons According to the Georgia Watermelon Growers and Distributors Association, the best way to select a melon is to cut a plug. This method, however, is only recommended when the melon will be eaten right away. Several outward signs are a guide to the ripeness and quality of watermelons. Good quality melons are usually firm, symetrical in shape, fresh, attractive in appearance and of good color. The color may vary from a deep, solid green to a gray, depending on the variety.

Mature melons have a dull rather than shiny surface. The underside of the ripe melon is yellowish in color, or beginning to turn from a white or pale green to a light yellow.
There are a couple of ideas for using watermelon this summer. Sweeten up your family with a jar of homemade "Watermelon Preserves" and surprise them with a "Watermelon Pie".
Watermelon Preserves 1 1/2 quarts prepared watermelon
rind 4 Tablespoons salt 2 quarts cold water 1 lemon, thinly sliced 1 Tablespoon ground ginger 4 cups sugar 1/4 cup lemon juice 7 cups water

cups water. Boil 5 minutes; add rind

If your pickles are not turning out the way they should, maybe you soaked the cucumbers in water. Cucumbers fill with water and can't soak up brine.
Plant nasturtiums around limas, melons and squash to help repel white flies, squash bugs and cucumber beetles. Besides adding color they serve as a "trap plant" for aphids.
To increase your okra yield, apply fish emulsion six to eight weeks after planting. If there is eight inches between plants, okra yield will also increase 25 to 35%.

Mix gelatin according to package directions and cool to thicken. When partially set, fold in small carton of whipped topping. Line graham cracker crust with watermelon cubes. Pour gelatin and whipped topping mixture over the watermelon. Chill to set. Garnish with

Curiosity will cause the rodents to jump in the barrel and drown.
Watch for disturbed bait since the rodents don't float to the top for two or three days.
