Georgia Peaches
Hmmmm Good!
Peach season is here. Growers anticipate a larger harvest than from last year's drought reduced crop.
Peach harvest began in southernmost Georgia in mid-May
and will continue until early August in the central and northern regions. The 1978 crop is the result of 12 months work pruning, spraying, fertilizing, thinning, picking, packing and shipping. Peaches represent the oldest commercial fruit enterprise in Georgia. It is from this crop that we got our

nickname, "The Peach State." Georgia and peaches have been associated for nearly 200 years.
The first peaches in Georgia were the honey-type, brought to Florida by the Spaniards. The Cherokee Indians then transported them by river to their various settlements in Georgia.
The commercial peach industry got underway in the 1870's. Four factors brought Georgians to peaches: a less labor-intensive industry than cotton; introduction of the Elberta variety by S. H. Rumph of Marshallville; improvement of rail transportation; and the development of mechanical refrigeration.
The history of the commercial peach industry is filled with sudden changes, profits and sometimes crushing losses. There was extensive overplanting during the 1920's. Since 1928, tree numbers have steadily declined. During the past few years, however, the numbers have begun to stabilize.
The outlook for the Georgia peach industry is good. It is in the hands of knowledgeable growers, and new varieties are being developed which are increasing the marketability of Georgia peaches.
Georgia ranks third nationally in peach production. Our growers through the Federal Marketing Agreement impose strict grade and quality standards to insure only our

Swine Research Beef Commission Calls
Yields Vaccine For Ga. Cattlemen Vote
The first "killed virus" vaccine for protecting swine against pseudorabies has been licensed by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA). Pseudorabies is a viral disease which causes high mortality in young pigs.
The vaccine is available in Georgia but distribution is limited to users approved by the state veterinarians office. The vaccine must be handled with care since pseudorabies antibodies in vaccinated swine produce blood test reactions identical to those from infected swine.
According to Dr. John A. Cobb, assistant commissioner, Georgia Department of Agriculture, only those < herds which are high-risk

Attention Truckers
Interstate Detour
Notice to all produce, poultry and livestock haulers. The Department of Transportation has notified us that the 1-75, 85 connector through Atlanta is being detoured. The detour has short curves and if taken at more than 35mph will be extremely dangerous. They encourage all truckers to use 1-285 rather than coming through Atlanta. The detour is expected to last through January, 1979.
The Georgia Agricultural Commodity Commission for Beef has called a vote on the proposed Marketing Order for Beef that was recently mailed to
all cattlemen in the state. Voting will begin on June 29.

Marigolds
World Wide
Throughout our country's history, various flowers have come to symbolize different states and organizations. The newest member of this group is the marigold which was adopted March 29, 1978, as the floral ambassador of friendship for the Friendship Force.
The seed of this native, hearty flower will be carried to every nation in the world by participating members of the Friendship Force. The seed especially packaged for the Friendship Force and bearing the Force logo, clasped hands, will be presented to the hosting parties as a symbol of the desire of the United States for friendship and as a symbol of the international bonds of mankind within the seed.
Marigolds from America are a reminder that friendship grows. We only have to plant the seed.
Following a series of eleven information meetings around the State and a Public Hearing hi Macon, the Commission voted unanimously to put the proposal to a vote. Ballots will be mailed to all known beef producers and they will vote from June 29 thru midnight July 28, 1978.
The Marketing Order, if approved by referendum, will provide a levy and assessment of 30 cents per head on all cattle produced and sold hi Georgia for $20.00 or more per head. The monies provided by this assessment would fund educational, research and promotional programs for beef.
Joy Gayle, Chairman of the Georgia Beef Commission, said, "This proposed Marketing Order gives us, the beef producers of Georgia, an opportunity to have some control of our destiny as an industry. It is a self-help program that is designed to benefit the producer. I urge all cattlemen to vote in favor of the referendum."
Gayle also pointed out that the ballot requires the producer to list the number of head he owns. Cattle producers who do not receive a ballot by mail and wish to vote hi the referendum can receive one by contacting the Commodities Divi-

Fresh Produce And Low Prices At Farmers Market
To the people of Georgia, the state farmers markets throughout Georgia offer an attractive selection of fresh produce at prices that are virtually unbeatable. In these times of stretching your grocery dollars, these markets are well worth the trip for consumers looking for the "best for the least".
The markets have a variety of functions. They serve as sales out-
lets for Georgia farmers. They are distribution centers for wholesale
dealers supplying retailers. And,
they provide the household shopper with an ideal outdoor market of low priced, fresh produce.
The Atlanta State Farmers' Market is one of the largest facilities of its kind in the world. It is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, every day of the year.
The Atlanta market has recently reopened it's canning facility to the

Registered Dairy Goats
Editor's note: Since publishing the letter regarding the dairy goat registration problem, we have learned that the problem lies with the American Dairy Goat Association.
Eighteen months ago the Association decided to computerize their handling of registration papers. To date, the system is not in operation so registration papers for the last year and a half are waiting to be processed.
While this is an explanation of the problem, the MARKET BULLETIN feels this is no excuse. We are writing the Association and encourage others to do so too. Their address is:

Horses, mules, ponies
for sale
People who are buying and breeding horses should ask to see the registration papers before leaving premises. Hie MARKET BULLETIN has received numerous complaints of people who buy a horse with the seller promising to send papers later and the papers never appear. The MARKET BULLETIN has no jurisdiction over such instances. A smart buyer and or person breeding a mare will ask to see the papers first.
In order to qualify to advertise horses, horse farmers should have had the livestock advertised in their possession 60 days or more before offering it for sale through this publication.
All horses offered for advertisement through the Market Bulletin should have a negative coggin test within the past 60 days.
AT STUD
At Stud notices will be published in the BULLETIN four times a year, in January, April, July and October. Word limit for these ads is 35 words which must also include the advertisers' name and address. Next issue will be July 5, deadline June 26.

Cloves add a delightful warm, pungent, aromatic taste to fruits, pork and soups. Ground cloves are used to enhance the flavor of baked goods, puddings, hot drinks, stuffings and stews.
Cloves come from an East Indian tree belonging to the myrtle family. The dried flower buds are gathered when they are crimson red. Later they turn dark brown.
At one time, cloves were greatly prized for their perfume value. Also, the Chinese had a regulation which required those addressing the emperor to hold cloves in their mouth apparently to make their breath fresher and more pleasing to the dignitary.
Clove comes from the French word for 'nail' because the flower bud somewhat resembles a rusty nail. The clove tree grows wild in Indonesia, and parts of the West Indies. It will not survive in our country.
Besides being valued in cooking, oil of cloves is used to scent soaps, mouthwashes and chewing gum.

TOMATO TIP When your tomatoes are about one and one-half inches in size, apply about one-third cup of 6-12-12 or 10-10-10 fertilizer around each plant, advises Jim Barber, Cooperative Extension Service horticuturist. Don't put the fertilizer too close to the plant, he warns. And it's a good idea to water the plant food into the soil. Speaking of watering, Barber says tomatoes like uniform mositure not too wet and not too dry.

Farmers Market

public which provides an added benefit to Georgia consumers. The cannery not only allows farmers and gardeners to preserve surplus products during the harvest season, but also enables homemakers to enrich home food supplies.
Operating hours for the cannery are Mondays, 2 to 10 p.m.; and Tuesdays through Fridays, 9 to 5 p.m. Cannery personnel are available during operating hours to assist those individuals using the facility.
Those individuals who are canning for the first time should visit the facility first to find out exactly what is required. You can also call the cannery specialist at 404/366-6910.
The Atlanta market is presently involved in a program of improvement and modernization. The effort is aimed at making the facility a "much better sales and buyer point for both farmers, consumers and produce dealers."
Improvements include a new lighting system, a visitor's center, a produce auction sale, redesigned traffic flow throughout the market, as well as a variety of other developments designed to make the market more efficient.
Produce auction sales are held twice a day, two days a week. Farmers carrying vegetables to the market may sell through the auction, use the standard shed method of display sales or use any combination of the two to dispose of their produce.
Eighteen other farmers markets located throughout the state comprise the remainder of the state owned facilities. Many are seasonal, but all are open now, stocked with fresh, Georgia grown produce.
The Department of Agriculture manages markets in Albany, Athens, Augusta, Blue Ridge, Cairo, Columbus, Cordele, Dillard, Donalsonville, Glennville, Jesup, Macon, Moultrie, Pelham, Savannah, Thomasville, Tifton and Valdosta.

Grandpa's
Garden
Encourage toads to live in your garden. Every toad will eat about 10,000 insects a month as well as lots and lots of slugs. To make them welcome, build a 'toad house' by inverting a clay flower pot. Punch a hole in the side for a door and put a pan of water nearby.
Your garden will grow faster if watered with warm water. Cucumbers especially prefer warm water. You can set a pail of water out in the sun to warm or if your garden hose has been laying in the sun, water cucumbers first.
If moles are a problem, there are two ways to get rid of them: you can either stink them out or drive them crazy. To stink them out soak a rag in vegetable oil (peanut or olive) and push it down the mole hole. The oil will quickly become rancid and the smell will drive them away. To drive them crazy, stick a child's pinwheel in several spots around the garden. The vibration and whirling noise will send them elsewhere to look for a home.
We have received many requests for oldtimey garden hints. While most of these methods have not been 'research-tested' they have withstood the test of time. If you have hints to share with our readers, please let us know.
To The Rescue Even if you can't swim, you may have an opportunity to rescue a drowning person this summer by extending your hand, a towel, shirt, branch or pole.
How much water is allowed in a ham with water added? I bought one that I could squeeze the water out of with my hands.
S. G. Forest Park The wet look is out in hams and fashion. Georgia law permits only ten percent water to be present in the final product. You may have purchased a borderline product, but send us the facts and we'll look into it.
I want to sell vegetables from my garden. Do I need a special license? It is a small plot.

Blue Ridge The state does not have any requirements to meet, but you should check with city and county authorities about the possibility of local ordinances.

Swine Research

herds will be approved for the vaccine.
"Careful records must be maintained on these herds as the identical blood test reactions could result in restrictions on the movement of vaccinated animals to neighboring states, etc.", said Dr. Cobb.
The "killed virus" vaccine is only the second product to become available for prevention of pseudorabies, also known as Aujeszky's disease or the "mad itch". One year ago, USDA licensed the first modified-live-virus vaccine for pseudorabies.
Vaccination is recommended for newborn pigs over three days old if they are nursing non-immune sows. If piglets are nursing immune sows, vaccination should be delayed until maternal antibody levels have declined, generally when pigs are 3 to 8 weeks of age.
