Ag Business
Georgia has the resources for becoming the "Agribusiness State of the Southeast." We have the land, climate, water, soil, geographic location, transportation, labor, financing and the markets to assure an extraordinary future in agribusiness development.
The potential of agribusiness development in Georgia is unlimited.
Agribusiness includes all who produce, transport, process, wholesale and retail food and fiber to the consumer. It also includes those who provide products and serI vices to agriculture. The Georgia Agribusiness Council may be the organization to coordinate agribusiness development in

the future. The statewide membership organization has expanded its efforts to promote and represent the business sector of agriculture in Georgia. It is an eleven-year old organization which has come into its own as an agricultural promotional agency.
GAC includes farmers, process ors, manufacturers, wholesalers and retailers as well as ag-related commodity groups, service agencies and ag professionals. Financial institutions represent a large percentage of the membership.
GAC has six major divisions - 1. Agribusiness Development, 2. Legislative Affairs, 3. Information and Public Relations, 4. Program Development, 5. Membership Services, and 6. Financial Development.
Two weeks ago, the Georgia Agribusiness Council held its 1978 annual meeting. On the program were Governor George Busbee, Lt. Governor Zell Miller and Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin. Also, a conference on agribusiness financing drew a record attendance to hear financial experts reveal the

Almost everything starts on a farm
TK
Agriculture Appreciation Day
Agriculture Day '78 is an effort to promote better understanding between rural and urban Americans a day to impress on the city population the
need for a profitable agriculture industry to supply their needs and wants
a day to remind farmers and producers of the importance of their business a day to remind the country's population that "almost everything starts on a farm".
Agriculture is Georgia's oldest and largest industry. It contributes more than $5 billion annually to the
state's economy. All of us depend on agriculture's contribution to our economy. Many of us rely heavily on the success of agriculture for success in our jobs. All of us depend on agriculture to feed and clothe our families.
When America was still in its infancy, approximately 85 percent of the population worked and lived on a farm. Today, about 4 percent of our people farm the land.
One American farmer feeds about 56 people, over three times as many

The frozen food compartment in the store where I shop doesn't seem cold enough to me. Sometimes there is condensation and water on the packages. I don't want mushy butterbeans. What gives?
Mrs. M. A.M. Valdosta
Frozen foods should be stored at zero degrees Fahrenheit or less. Sometimes the refrigeration coils will become coated with ice and reduce the cooling efficiency. If you had told us which store this was we would have had one of our inspectors check out the problem.
Dear Readers . . .

Why do I have to go to a health food store to buy sugar-free peanut butter? There is chunky and smooth available why not sugar-free?
Mrs. S. W. Nacoochee
Several of the major peanut butter manufacturers offer a sugar-free peanut butter which is sold in local retail food stores. Look for a spread that is labeled "old-fashioned". We have sent you the brand name of the

EPA approval of the new fire ant bait 'Ferriamicide' means farmers will once again have a tool to combat fire ants,.according to Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin.
The new material has distinct advantages over Mirex in that it is bio-degradable and non-carcinogenic, thus can be used with complete safety for human as well as wildlife populations. The. new bait has been approved for ground use only at this time.
"Ground application will permit farmers to treat fire ant mounds on their property and will provide temporary relief in this respect," Irvin said. "We hope now that we will soon get clearance for aerial application so we can wage a sustained and determined fight to get rid of the pest."
The new bait must be manufactured by the State of Mississippi and as soon as the bait is available an announcement will be made. The bait has been approved for use one year, effective July 1.

Seed Reports Delayed
Due To Large Volume
An unusual increase in the number of seed samples received by the state seed labs during the month of February is resulting in some delays on final reports.
The total number of samples received during the month increased from 3,634 in 1977 to 5,579 this year. Much of the volume is due to the increased need for soybean testing resulting from low quality soybean seed.
Reports on soybean germination are usually completed and mailed within two to three weeks after the sample is received.

Dear Editor: I want to tell you that I
really enjoy the MARKET BULLETIN. I wanted to send you a picture of some things I grew in my backyard. I planted 3 seeds I thought were squash seed but when they're grown they smell like a gourd and are pale green. Mine grew crooked as I just let them run on the ground. One of them
was 43 inches long and weighed 12 pounds. Have any of your readers seen this before?

Horses, mules, ponies

People who are buying and breeding horses should ask to see the registration papers before leaving premises. The MARKET BULLETIN has received numerous complaints of people who buy a horse with the seller promising to send papers later and the papers never appear. The MARKET BULLETIN has no jurisdiction over such instances. A smart buyer and or person breeding a mare will ask to see the papers first.
In order to qualify to advertise horses, horse farmers should have had the livestock advertised in their possession 60 days or more before offering it for sale through this publication.
All horses offered for advertisement through the Market Bulletin should have a negative coggin test within the past 60 days.
On recommendation of the State Equine Board, at stud notices are published in the Farmers and Consumers Market Bulletin during the prime breeding season only, January through April.

Gardening Tune
Is Almost Here
It's time to start thinking about your vegetable garden and all the fresh, delicious produce you can grow in your backyard.
Planting time is just around the corner so you should make your seed selections as soon as possible. Decide what vegetables you want to include in this year's garden then shop for the varieties that do best in your area.
Although you should not plant until the danger of frost has passed, you can go ahead and get your garden plot ready. A soil test will help you determine how much lime and fertilizer your garden will need.

requires low maintenance and survives in full sun or partial shade. It can decline quickly though and become thatchy.
Zoysia Zoysiagrass is grown state-wide. It is a perennial grass but goes dormant in early fall and resumes growth in mid-spring. It produces a dense sod and is relatively shade tolerant. It is, however, slow to establish and may take 18-24 months to completely cover a plugged lawn. For quicker cover, the grass can be sodded.
St. Augustine St Augustinegrass is becoming more popular primarily south of Middle Georgia. The attractive bluegreen grass forms a relatively dense sod and is the most shade tolerant grass grown in the state. St. Augustinegrass, however, is particularly susceptible to insect injury. For additional information concerning grass that is best adapted for your area, contact your county Extension agent.

as 20 years ago when there were twice as many farm workers. In the last 10 years, agricultural production has climbed 20 percent on 6 percent fewer acres.
Food is actually less expensive today than 25 years ago. If you applied the same percentage to food as has changed in the hourly wage, a pound of round steak would cost more than $3.00, a quart of milk would run 70 cents, a dozen eggs $2.00 and a pound of hamburger or chicken would cost over $2,00.
The efficiency of American farmers makes it possible for us to enjoy relatively inexpensive food. This efficiency has also allowed us to export the production of one in four acres harvested in the United States. This is an important plus in achieving a balance of payments in foreign trade.
A lot of people make agriculture work. It's an industry that supports many of us; four out of every ten jobs are agriculturally related.
The goal of Agriculture Day 78 is to encourage cooperation among all members of the farmer - business - consumer team. Together they can build and support a strong agriculture industry.
Many product containers which I have used are shaped so that when they are tilted to pour the liquid rushes to the top causing the container to become top heavy. Almost always, I pour more liquid out than I wanted. I think containers like this are wasteful.
Mr. J.P.S. Athens
We have no jurisdiction over the shape of a container a company must use for their product, only labeling and size. You should write the company direct and tell them your problem. Companies usually respond favorably to consumer suggestions.
I am wondering if you could tell me the best pesticide to use on termites and powder post beetles.
Mr.G.O. Winder Chlordane for termites, lindane for the beetles.

What 9 Avwuikeod?
Arrowhead is a water plant that grows in ponds, streams and roadside ditches. When the plant is not in bloom it is still recognizable because of its unique leaf shape. The large pointed leaves look just like arrows which explains how it got its common name.
The starchy tubers of arrowhead were used by American Indians as food. The roots were boiled or roasted and eaten like potatoes.
In the summer the plant produces a stalk of white flowers 1 1/2 inches wide.
Arrowhead has long been considered a survival food because it is readily available whatever the season. Records of the Lewis and Clark expedition indicate that the men subsisted on arrowhead roots using the starchy tubers for bread when they ran low on staple supplies.
Stockdogs and
Horse Shows
Stockdogs will be published in the March 29 issue of the MARKET BULLETIN. Deadline for all ads is March 22. Stockdog ads are limited to those dogs which have been specifically bred or trained for use on the farm. In order to qualify, ads must include dog's breeding and special training or ability that makes the dog a working animal on the farm. If this information is not included, the ad will not be considered for publication.
Horse shows for April, May and June will be published in the April 5 edition of the BULLETIN. Deadline for notices is March 27. The next horse show edition will be published JulyS.
SEED SITUATION The seed situation for spring planting hi Georgia is a mixture of good and bad, according to Harvey Lowery, agronomist with the Cooperative Extension Service. He said the supplv ^ad quality of peanut seed appears good to excellent. But soybeans are only poor to fair, and Georgia produced hybrid corn and cotton seed are poor this year.

Beautiful Lawns Require Planning, Work and TLC
If you want a beautiful lawn, you've got to start at the beginning - select
the proper turf. A wide selection of grasses is available but the right choice
will determine your success.
Certain grass varieties grow
better in South Georgia than in
North Georgia. The maintenance
you are willing to provide as well as
the investment you are willing to
make will help determine your
variety of grass.

Tom Linder, Georgia's agriculture leader for 19 years, died March 4 at the age of 90. Mr. Linder served as state commissioner of agriculture from 1935 to 1954.
Linder guided the Department of
Agriculture through the closing years of the depression into the relative prosperity of the fifties. An innovator in the field of farm marketing, he was a key figure in the creation and growth of the Atlanta Farmer's Market,
which was the largest of its kind in the world when built.
Bulletin readers will recall other contributions made by Mr. Linder. His weekly editorials displayed his strong convictions on the right of the farmers and religion. His inspirational devotions were read and appreciated by people across the
state. Commissioner of Agriculture in

Fescue Tall fescue is a popular lawn grass in the northern one-third of the state, the most common being Kentucky 31. Fescue is a bunch-type grass. It does not form a thick sod. Fescue lawns are usually economical to establish. They grow rapidly and will tolerate some traffic. Because this grass does not spread, periodic reseeding or renovation is required to maintain an attractive lawn. It is also a rough textured grass and its appearance may not be as pleasing as some of
the finer leaved grasses. Kentucky Bluegrass is a favorite

must not harvest the four lower leaves of each stalk, exclusive of the plant bed leaves which normally are
not harvested anyway. The change was recommended by
Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin and tobacco industry leaders to allow farmers to produce and market a larger part of their poundage quota in higher value, upper stalk tobacco and less lower stalk tobacco for which demand and
prices are lower. Growers who do not agree to this
arrangement will receive price support only if they limit their plantings to 100 percent of their allotments. For the 1977 crop, the acreage limitation was 110 percent

Bermuda Common bermudagrass grows well throughout the state. It spreads by below and above ground stems. It
is inexpensive and establishes itself quickly in the spring. Because of its deep root system it is relatively drought resistant and adapts to almost any soil condition.
Hybrid bermudagrass has some disease resistance, greater density and neater appearance than common bermudagrass. Because of its density it discourages weed en-
croachment . Hybrid bermudagrass must be
sprigged or sodded. This grass requires a high maintenance: more fertilizer, more mowing, and more time spent in lawn care.

various financial programs available to develop agribusiness in Georgia.
The potential of agribusiness development in Georgia is unlimited if we can pool our resources, increase our food production, expand our processing operations and inaugurate some hard-hitting marketing programs, aimed at the export field.
We accept the challenge.
