Camellias are native to China and Japan but have become one of the most popular cultivated flowers in America. Camellias are relative newcomers to our country having been here only 150 years. They adapted readily to our growing conditions and are now grown in practically every garden.
The plant itself is a large shrub or small tree with glossy, very dark evergreen foliage which is thick and leathery. The flowers bloom from October through early spring depending on the weather. Early camellias are often brought to flower in a warm spell in mid-winter only to be killed back by a winter freeze.
Camellias are excellent for growing in partially shaded situations where other plants just exist. Besides the beautiful flowers, the shiny evergreen foliage is a bonus for landscape and foundation plantings.
Camellias are related to the tea plant and require acid soil with ample amounts of organic matter. They need excellent drainage and good soil aeration.

Number 1
New Year's Fortune
To have the chance to start again To correct the things gone wrong To hope once more for lucky breaks To leave worries of last year behind.
To think fresh thoughts and new ideas To grow and reach and soar To set a goal and forget the ones That were missed by a mile last year.
To start each day with a smile and a prayer
To thank God for my many blessings To make Him glad at nighttime prayer For giving me one day more.
To be the person I want to be The friend that others need To love again, all over again The ones I hold so dear.
These are the dreams, the prayers and goals
A New Year often brings; It is a fortune unequaled by The gold of a thousand kings.
The MARKET BULLETIN staff and Commissioner Tommy Irvin wish you good tidings for 1978-
Renewed faith Renewed hope Renewed love.

Poultry House Research Saves Energy
An energy conservation program using wood to heat broiler growout houses is being researched at Georgia Tech's Engineering Experiment Station. Using funds allocated for poultry research from the State Department of Agriculture, the Experiment Station is working with the Georgia Poultry Federation on the project.
Pecan Trees Need To Be Checked
Now is the time to have leaf analyses and soil tests run to determine nutritional needs of pecan trees. Tom Crocker, Extension Service horticulturist, says the tests are especially important this year because of dry, adverse weather. According to Crocker, leaf and soil analysis is the only way to determine the exact nutritional condition of pecan trees. Local county Extension agents have additional information about the testing program.
Jan. 17 -Free Gardening Classes, Cobb Ctr. Mall. For info: Carolina Riggins, [404] 433-2487.
The heating systems now used in the broiler growout houses are fired by propane, a commodity which may become more expensive and possible unavailable in the near future.
Heating the houses with woodfired furnaces can provide a cheap, alternate energy source in Georgia because of the availability of large quantities of wood waste.
If the wood-fired heating unit can generate enough warm air to provide adequate heat, growers will be able to reduce their use of propane to almost zero.
The conservation program also includes a study of the efficiency of propane-fired brooders now in use. Results of the efficiency study will enable engineers to make recommendations to growers on how to best use propane for the lowest cost.
