Araucana Chicks
Favored In Ga.
The Araucana chickens are a domestic chicken, found originally among the Araucana Indians, in the vicinity of Santiago, Chili, in South America.
The appearance of the Araucanas is similar to the Rose or Pea-
combed Leghorn or Black Breasted game fowl, but are larger in size. Not only do the f Araucanas lay blue eggs, but most Araucanas have long append|ages and some are ^umpless. In this country, from the original importations in 1925, and subsequently, it has been bred to a good state of uniformity in color, size, and type. Of the original imports, the ones with the Black Red color pat-

tern with rose or pea combs were the ones which laid the bluest eggs. This strain was perpetuated and bred.
Most Araucanas in this country today are of this type. These chickens are good layers of fair sized eggs, are excellent mothers and are also excellent for the table. I breed them and prefer them to almost any other chicken for table use.
I am a member of the International Araucana Society. The society has almost six hundred members with members in every country with the exception of Russia.
The Araucanas are noted mostly f:or their colored eggs, which range from green to dark blue. Although claims have been these blue shelled eggs have higher protein value and are lower in cholesterol than the white or brown shelled eggs, this is not the case as studies suggest.
The blue shelled eggs have three to six percent less protein and the cholesterol level is slightly higher than the white or brown shelled eggs. Scientists are still unable to account for the blue shelled eggs these chickens produce, as no other domestic chicken lays such an egg.

Governor Signs Egg Proclamation

Governor George Busbee has again this year officially proclaimed February as "Egg Month In Georgia." The Governor acknowledged that, thanks to the more than 400 egg producers hi the state, the egg industry is the second largest hi the nation and the state's third largest agricultural cash crop. On hand for the signing were [pictured left to right] Robert N. How ell, Executive Secretary of the Georgia Egg Commission; Chuck Cooper, General Manager of National Egg Company; Barbara Lee, Georgia Egg Commission Marketing Specialist; Roy Durr, Georgia Egg Association; Dr. John Schutz, University of Georgia Poultry Science Department; Linda FitzHugh, National Egg Company; Hilda Johnson, Georgia Egg Commission Home Economist. "Egg Month In Georgia1 ' is sponsored by the Georgia Egg Commission, one of the state's nine commodity commissions. The Egg Commission's primary duties include promotion, education and research.

Food Symposium Short Course

Held In Athens

For Nurserymen

A free public symposium on food additives will be held February 10, from 8:30 to 3 p.m. at the University of Georgia Center for Continuing Education, Athens.
Five food experts from throughout the United States will address the cost, benefits, facts and fallacies about food additives at the Fourth Annual "Food and Your Well-Being" symposium sponsored and directed by the University's student chapter of the Institute of Food Technologists.
Form Exports
Every year since 1970, U.S. farm exports have surpassed all previous annual export totals. At the beginning of this decade, farm exports totaled only $6.7 billion. Last year, the total was nearly $23 billion. Agricultural leaders believe the United States is in the farm export business to stay. And they say consumers as well as farmers benefit.

A special landscape short course for Georgia nurserymen will be offered at Georgia Southern College, Statesboro, February 8-9.
"The short course is planned to bring nurserymen up-to-date on the latest innovations in landscaping design," says Henry Clay, horticulturist with the Cooperative Extension Service.
The short course is sponsored by Extension in cooperation with Georgia Southern College.
Registration is at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday, in the Rosenwald Building of GSC.
Changing Farms
A lot of changes are taking place down on the farm. For one thing, the average age of farmers which was long thought to be too high while going higher is now going down. In 1970, only 14.6 per cent of all farmers were under 35 years of age.

Numbers

Egg Month

Proclaimed

By Governor

Georgia's more than 400 egg producers are being honored this month with February proclaimed as Egg Month. Georgia egg producers support a state-wide promotion, education, and research effort with a two cents per case check-off. The money is administered by the Georgia Egg Commission with offices at the State Farmers' Market in Forest Park.
All Georgians are urged to enjoy the natural goodness of eggs during February.

Egg Facts

Georgia is the second largest egg

producing state in the nation,

providing more than 14 million eggs

every day.

***

In 1975, Georgia's egg industry accounted for 11.9 per cent of Georgia's total cash farm receipts [approximately $264-million] and was the state's third largest cash farm product. * * *

Georgia produced 8 per cent of all the eggs consumed in the nation.
***

Georgia eggs account for 12 - 15 per cent of dairy case sales in the state's grocery s*to*re*s.

To produce an egg, it takes a hen 24 to 25 hours, and to do so, she requires 5 1/2 ounces of food and 10 ounces of water.
***

Egg prices fluctuate throughout

the year due to seasonal supply and

demand, feed prices etc. As a

protein bargain though, eggs are

hard to beat at any time of the year.

Large eggs selling for 79 cents a

dozen are only 53 cents a pound and

the cost per two egg serving is only

13 cents!

***

If there is less than 7 cents price spread per dozen eggs between one size and the next smaller size in the same grade, you get more for your money by buying the larger size.
***

Georgia producers also support a national promotion, education, and
research effort with an additional 5 cents per case payment to the
American Egg Board with offices in Chicago.

Dear Editor: I am writing in hopes that some of the ladies that
crochet might be able to help me. Years ago my grandmother started a beautiful rose
bedspread, but she did not get to finish it before she passed away. It was then passed to my mother who tried to finish it, but could not since she did not have directions. Now it has come to be but I have also been unable to finish it.
I hate to see this beautiful bedspread go unused or left in a closet since I hope to pass it on to my children. I'm not sure of the name of the bedspread but I think it is "Pink Rosette". It is made up of squares with a rose in the center of each square. There is a rose at each point to attach each square. Around the edge there is a rose at each point and on each corner.
Please, if there is anyone that has the directions to this bedspread or knows how to get it, please write to me.

In order to qualify to advertise horses, horse farmers should have had the livestock advertised in their possession 60 days or more before offering it for sale through this publication.
People who are buying and breeding horses should ask to see the registration papers before leaving premises. The MARKET BULLETIN has received numerous complaints of people who buy a horse with the seller promising to send papers later and Ihe papers never appear. The MARKET BULLETIN has no jurisdiction over such instances. A smart buyer and or person breeding a mare will ask to see the papers Grst.
On recommendation of the State Equine Board, at stud notices are published in the Farmers and Consumers Market Bulletin during the prime breeding season onty, January through April.

Horses, mules, ponies
for sale
In order to qualify to advertise horses, horse farmers should have had the livestock advertised in their possession 60 days or more before offering it for sale through this publication.
People who are buying and breeding horses should ask to see the registration papers before leaving premises. The MARKET BULLETIN has received numerous complaints of people who buy a horse with the seller promising to send papers later and the papers never appear. The MARKET BULLETIN has no jurisdiction over such instances. A smart buyer and or person breeding a mare will ask to see the papers first.
On recommendation of the State Equine Board, at stud notices are published in the Farmers and Consumers Market Bulletin during the prime breeding season only, January through April.

The chanterelle mushrooms feel like velvet to the touch. They are funnel-shaped and differ from the poisonous Jack-o-Lantern mushroom (Clitocybe illudens) in the arrangement of their gills. Besides, the Jack-o-Lantern glows in the dark, a warning that these mushrooms should riot be collected.
The chanterelles on the other hand are most collectable and experienced mushroom hunters claim them to be delicious raw or cooked, dried, canned or pickled.
Now, down to the nitty-gritty or how to really identify a chanterelle. The chanterelles differ from other gill fungi because their gills are always blunt rather than sharp-edged. The gills may appear like ridges and they always run down the stem of the mushroom instead of stopping where the stem and cap join.

I want to know if there is a magnolia tree that doesn't bloom. I have one that is about six years old and has never had a bloom. It's beautiful and healthy but why doesn't it bloom?
M.B., Union Point
You have a Magnolia Grandifloria. It usually takes 8 to 10 years to bloom,
depending on the conditions. In fact, the healthier the tree, the longer it
takes to produce blooms. According to John Ridley, sometimes known as "Blossom," when a magnolia tree dies, it has the biggest and most beautiful
blooms it ever produces! How's that*fo*r *irony.

I have a tangelo orange tree. This is its first year bearing fruit, even

though it is 8 years old. The fruit is sour. I have fertilized it three times a

year, so why is the fruit sour?

J. B., Savannah

Because a tangelo is a cross between a tangerine and a grapefruit it is

supposed to have a slightly sour taste. Another fact that might influence

taste is nutrition. We suggest that you have a soil test run to insure that

your soil has the proper nutrients available. Thirdly, moisture relation can

effect taste. If the trees have been under a severe moisture stress, this

might account for the unusual taste. Also be sure that you are eating ripe

fruit and not immature fruit.

I am interested in information on how to destroy Wisteria Vine? C.B., Statesboro
In talking with Extension Weed Control Specialist, Dr. James Miller, he said that the practical approach would be to cut the vine down and paint the cut surface with undiluted 2, 4-D. The wound should be saturated with this material. Suckers may come up from the Wisteria's roots. If the vine is
in a lawn, these suckers can be mowed. ***

Please tell me how to start a pomegranate bush; from a seed or a plant? H.H.,Boneville
Buy a plant from a nursery. [Yep, they do sell 'em] It can be started from seed, but will take some time.

Please send me some information on forest damage from pests. R. L., Statesboro
Forest insects account for millions of dollars in damage to Georgia's forest every year. The southern pine beetle was responsible for a timber loss hi the south-east of more than 103 million dollars in 1973 alone. In addition to the southern pine beetle, losses are reported from other bark beetles, reproductive weevils, tipmoths, and various other insects as well as forest diseases such as Dutch Elm, fusiform rust, fomes annosus and, most recently, pitch canker.

Not Recommended
Some fruits just aren't recommended in Georgia. The apricot, for example. Extension Service horticulturists say it is a no-no because its early blooming habit often means loss of the crop to cold weather. The French pear varieties, such as Bartlett, are not recommended because of the ever-present fire blight problem.

Mistletoe Problem
Now, while the trees are dormant, is the best time to remove mistletoe from pecans. In addition to taking nutrients from the tree, mistletoe weakens limbs and causes breakage. Extension Service Horticulturist Tom Crocker says it's best to climb the tree and cut several feet below where the pest has invaded the limb.
