Looking Ahead
To Year 2000
Who in 1977 is bold enough to predict what Georgia's agricultural future holds in the year 2000?
This sort of prediction is nearly impossible. Who knows what kind of
changes in the climate the south will have? What kinds of food might we be getting from our oceans and other sources? What technological advances lie ahead in agriculture? No one knows for certain.
New Trends However, there are some trends that are developing which may influence the next several years. For

instance, corn and soybeans should continue to grow as major crops in the state. It is certain that additional food will be necessary to feed an increasing world population. Grains are basic to feeding these people whether consumed directly or indirectly through livestock.
Both corn and soybeans are relatively easy to grow and farmers can substitute quite easily each year, if market conditions warrant, from soybeans to corn as both use essentially the same type of machinery for cultivation and harvest.
Soybeans Set Record Annual statistics show that soybean production continues to reach record levels, while in 1975 corn captured second place in the state's production records. Georgia would also do well to further develop her winter forage crops. Georgia is among the southern states that can produce forage crops during the cold winter months. This development can benefit the state's beef industry by backgrounding these cattle to be fattened and later sold for market use. And percapita consumption of beef continues to increase each year. The practice of forage feeding is generally more economical than depending on stored feed. Also some of the lowest cost gain is achieved in

Ag Department Serves Georgia
The Georgia Department of Agriculture serves farmers and consumers in many ways. One of these is through:
Livestock Disease Controls
Department inspectors check livestock going through sales barns and also do a certain amount of farm testing to help farmers control or eradicate diseases and prevent dangerous diseases from spreading to healthy animals.
Decontaminating Water
Takes Expert Know-How
Pesticide decontamination of water supplies used for livestock on farms is not always a simple problem and should not be tried with regular household supplies such as soda, detergents and bleachs unless an expert in pesticide chemistry has recommended and supervised the decontamination, warns Asa B. Foster, Jr., Director of the Air and Hazardous Materials Division of EPA.
Plants Will Grow
Give Them Room
Overplanting is a common fault of many home owners. Plants are growing, living materials that do not remain the same size that they were when planted. Windows and walls of buildings are covered, driveway entrances become serious traffic hazards, and walks are covered with foliage.
This situation may come about by a poor choice of plant material. Just a few massive, growing shrubs such as Burford Holly, Photinia, or Ligustrum can cover a one-story house in a short time.
Rather than plant large-growing shrubs along the foundation use more compact, low plants such as Japanese Boxwood, Rotunda Holly, Carissa Holly, Dwarf Yaupon Holly, Heller Holly, Dwarf Pittosporum, or one of the spreading Junipers.
Always think ahead about the probable size range of the plants after about five to eight years growth and much of the overplanted landscapes can be avoided.
"These procedures may have deficiencies and may even be dangerous," Foster said.
A review and analysis of the information available indicates no universal chemical degradation/detoxification method exists for all pesticides, according to EPA.
It is important that pesticide decontamination of private water wells be evaluated in terms of each specific pesticide. It is necessary to know the kind(s) and concentration(s) of the chemicals contaminating the water in the wells.
Many pesticide chemical degradation products are as hazardous as the pesticide itself, others are unknown and should be regarded as hazardous.
The layman, especially, should be warned against the indiscriminate use of chemical disposal methods because of his unfamUiarity with the hazardous nature of the detoxifying reagents and degradation products, Foster warned.
Experts in pesticide chemistry should supervise the decontamination of water wells.
MULCH SHRUBS People go to a lot of trouble to plant shrubs, but often leave out one important step: mulching. Mulch is important for several reasons, says Horticulturist Gerald Smith of the Extension Service. It helps conserve moisture and keep down weeds. The mulch pine straw, grass clippings, pine bark, or old leaves should be about three inches deep.
Ga. May Get
Mirex Bait
For Fire Ants
Mirex bait should soon again be available for fire ant control and eradication in Georgia, it was learned last week.
Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin said the Mirex bait manufacturing facility in Mississippi has been able to secure the actual Mirex chemical from Phillips Bros. Division of Inglehard Minerals & Chemical Corp., an international chemical marketing firm. It is thought that the chemical is coming from South America.
The Commissioner said his department has been advised that enough chemical material will be available to make Mirex fire ant bait for all infested states.
Irvin said he will first try to get an adequate supply for free distribution to the public through county extension offices.
The State Department of Agriculture will try to secure enough for aerial applications following distribution of an adequate amount for public use.
Mirex fire ant bait has not been available for some time now because Hooker Chemical Co. of Niagara Falls, N. Y. has refused to supply the Mirex chemical to the Mississippi formulating plant.
Irvin said he would make every effort to get supplies of Mirex bait to county extension offices as soon as possible.
Home Remedies
No antibiotics or vitamin pills
Were among our medicine bills.
In fact little money was spent
On any illness or ailment.
Remedies were the old "fried and true"
Mama seemed to know just what to do. Kerosene, flour sacks, turpentine and salts
Whatever Mama said, there were no balks.
A heavily rubbed chest with warm flannel
Chest was rubbed with salve .from the mantle.
Spring tonics were a seasonal must
We knew better than to offer a fuss.
Each Saturday we took castor oil
A salt meat poultice for a boil.
The mantle was a convenient storage place
For reaching remedies "just in case".

Dear Editor: In Hoover's day, when one couldn't make money at
all, my mother toasted or parched wheat for coffee. First, she mixed it with coffee then we had to use
just wheat and it was good for us, more than coffee. It was plain out good and nutritious too. When toasting, set oven to 300 degrees; don't let it scorch, just a golden brown is best. Then grind it.

Dear Editor: I would like to know if any of your readers have
directions or can give them in writing about smocking. Will you please see if some one might know. My grandmother used to do it \n the 30's when I was a small child. It is a lost art now days.

Horses, mules, ponies
for sale
In order to qualify to advertise horses, horse farmers should have had the livestock advertised in their possession 60 days or more before offering it for sale through this publication.
People who are buying and breeding horses should ask to see the registration papers before leaving premises. The MARKET BULLETIN has received numerous complaints of people who buy a horse with the seller promising to send papers later and the papers never appear. The MARKET BULLETIN has no jurisdiction over such instances. A smart buyer and or person breeding a mare will ask to see the papers first.
On recommendation of the State Equine Board, at stud notices are published in the Farmers and Consumers Market Bulletin during the prime breeding season only, January through April.

Oyster mushrooms grow on dead and dying trees, especially hardwoods. They are usually found in crowded, overlapping clumps with large white, gray or light brown caps from three to nine inches across.
Each mushroom cap is like a fan or shell. The edges are often fluted or curve down and the caps are smooth. The stems, however, may be fuzzy near the base.
Oyster mushrooms are considered safe to eat. The stems are inedible and should be removed. The flesh of the oyster mushroom is white, juicy and dense. The small specimens are usually regarded as most appetizing.
While the Pleurotis ostreatus mushroom has white spores, its close relative P. sapidus has pink ones but otherwise the two species are almost indistinguishable and both are known as the oyster mushroom.
Oyster mushrooms grown in incredible abundance. Anytime you see a dead or dying hardwood tree you are likely to find mushrooms. Other fungi besides oysters grow on trees, however, so be accurate in your identification before you pick a half a bushel for dinner.

4-H IN SCHOOL
Since 1905 Georgia 4-H has enjoyed a close working relationship with the state's school systems. "This is an important relationship which we have nurtured constantly and never taken for granted," said Tom Da vis, acting Extension Service assistant director for 4-H. In recognition of the continuing support of schools, the Georgia Association of Extension 4-H Agents selected the Georgia Association of School Superintendents to receive the official "Friend of 4-H Award" for 1976.
Marshall E. McCullough [r], head of the animal science department at the Georgia Experiment Station, Griffin, chosen as recipient of the Ag Alumni Association's Distinguished Faculty Research Award. Presenting the award was L. W. [Hoop] Eberhard, Jr. [1], the association's president-elect. McCullough is recognized nationally and internationally for his research in forages and silage feeding programs and his contributions to the livestock industry.
Americans Change Their Eating Habits
Shifts in population during the last decade have had some interesting effects on what Americans have been eating.
Avoid Accidents
Use Your Brain
Nine out of ten accidents can be avoided because they are caused by people through errors in judgment, lack of knowledge, or lack of emotional control.
A driver thinks he has "time" to pass even though another car is approaching at a high speed.
A swimmer drowns because he thinks he can swim further than he really can. Have you had an accident resulting from errors of poor judgment?
Operating tools or appliances without really knowing how, trying to do a task without proper equipment, cleaning floors with combustable substances, not knowing pilot lights were burning, are examples of accidents caused by lack of knowledge.
Do you know what skills, abilities, and limitations you have? The more we know, the more we can avoid accidents.
When a person is tense, fearful, worried, resentful, angry etc. he is more likely to have an accident than when he is not influenced by these emotions or attitudes. He becomes more careless, uses less sound judgment and takes more unnecessary risks.
Will you be the one person in four who will have an accident serious enough to require a doctor's services this year? Strive to be safety prone not accident prone. Much of the choice is left to you!
January --
WINTER FUN SAFETY MONTH.
Farm Department of
National Safety Council.
The most dramatic effect came from the drop in preteen children,
low consumers of most foods except milk, and the sharp increase in numbers of teenagers and young
adults, high consumers of most
foods. Since 1965, more and more Amer-
icans have been living alone or in
two-person households. Three factors have been responsible for
this: lower birth rates, a higher divorce rate, and an increasing ten-
dency for young adults to leave their parents' homes and set up their own households.
These smaller households have
helped to boost food consumption. Statistics show that persons hi small
households tend to eat more per person than those in larger ones.
This is due to fewer children who would eat less and the chance of more food being wasted.
Dairy products consumption declined by 3 percent per capita from 1965-1975 due to a decline of child-
ren resulting in a drop of milk drinking. This drop was partially offset by an increase in ice cream and cheese consumption.
Red meat consumption was boosted by high numbers of teenagers, and increased proportion of adults.
Potato consumption increased in the last decade but this is expected
to decline in the next decade. There was an increase in fruit and vege-
table consumption and it is expected to continue.
Per capita consumption of bread and cereals has fallen. .However sugar consumption rose with the swelling numbers of teenagers and
young adults. Since it is projected that young people will account for a
smaller part of the population by 1990, sugar consumption should decline. From September, 1976 Farm Index.

Farm Income Declining
Although it is costing more
to operate large farms, in general,
net farm income has been steadily
on the incline. This can be attributed
in recent years primarily to two
things
less government in-
tervention in the market place and
more export business.
Because the government no longer
regulates crops as strongly as they
did in the 60's, farmers are selling
their product on the free market.
The free market is a system which is
essentially an open market where
prices are not set by government but
are based on the supply-demand for
goods.
What this means is that farmers
are free to plant those crops which
offer the greatest profit potential for
their resources.
Exports
As for the rising export business,
this is good because it keeps com-
modities from stockpiling and
causing prices to go lower if there is
an abundance of goods. It also helps
pay for the petroleum and other
products we import from foreign
countries.
As for the government's role
in the future of agriculture, it's hard
to predict. A recent survey of far-
mers in Georgia showed that they
generally favor the free market
system.
What will happen over the next
few decades depends on continued
technological advances and the
transfer of that technology to farms.
Increased adoption of current
proven cultural and management
practices could also lead to in-
creased agricultural production.
Although there are many unknowns,
agriculture will still remain as our
basic industry into the next century.
Cotton Fights Back
While American cotton growers are commanding record high prices for their 1976 crop, U.S. synthetic fiber manufacturers are seeing their profits fall below expectations and , in some cases dip into the red. Not too many years ago the situation was just reversed. The difference between then and now is consumer demand demand which cotton producers can claim some credit for building through Cotton Incorporated, their fiber company.
