Eye Safety Helps
Prevent Blindness
You can eat with false teeth, walk with a wooden leg but - you can't see with a glass eye! Most of us take precious eyesight for granted and don't heed the simple health and safety precautions that could reduce the frightening statistic: Half of All Blindness is Preventable.
Early examination of children's eyes is very important. We have a
startling poster of a lovely lady - out of focus - titled "This is Susie's Mommy the Way That Susie Sees Her." Children don't know how well they should see and often develop emotional scars struggling against a needless handicap. Amblyopia, or Lazy Eye Blindness, can be corrected if detected by the age of 4 or 5. The

Georgia Society for the Prevention of Blindness has a Home Eye Kit for parents to use in screening youngsters if a professional examination is a real difficulty.
One of our major staff activities is training and supplying volunteers to conduct pre-school vision screening. Church groups and service organizations-find this a rewarding community service because one in twenty children have a vision problem. This "stitch in time" can save not only a lazy eye but a failure complex that can darken a youngster's future.
Sight Saving begins even earlier than the pre-school years. Genetic counseling is imperative in families with serious eye conditions because many blinding problems are hereditary. It's a wise biology teacher who closely relates genetics to family planning during the teen years.
Eye safety is a full time job! We've begun an active primary school education with teachers packets and films appropriate for children in pre-schools and the first three grades. Early education stresses care with sticks, pine cones, umbrellas and projectile toys, warnings that bows and arrows and BB guns

Are you certified to use restricted pesticides? Federal law requires that all private pesticide applicators [mostly farmers] be licensed or certified by the Georgia Department of Agriculture before they will be able to purchase or use restricted use pesticides after October 21. State-wide training will be offered in most counties between September 26 and October 21. For additional information contact your local County Extension office.
Armyworm Attack
Continues In Ga.
Fall Armyworms which have cost millions of dollars in damage and control throughout Georgia are still on the rampage and threaten to destroy even more crops and lawns. The threat of a worm build-up within the next two or three weeks is a possibility.
However, there also appears to be a build-up of natural predators, parasites and disease which is helping in some areas to reduce Armyworm populations. One of the predators, the firey ground beetle, that feeds on the caterpillar has increased its numbers over the past week.
Farmers and homeowners should continue to be on the lookout for the brownish-greenish-black striped worms that have taken their toll on crops, forages and lawns in Georgia and the Southeast. Cooler weather is expected to help if not alleviate the Armyworms.
Contact your local County Extension office or the Georgia Department of Agriculture for information on control measures.

Dear Editor My husband and I discussed buying the 12 foot

hens advertised recently in the MARKET BULLETIN.

We need some advice before purchasing though.

Are these chickens 12 feet tall or do they have 12

feet? In either case it is still quite a bargain at $1.50

each. Think of it...if the chickens have 12 feet that

means they have 12 drumsticks apiece. But, if they

are just the conventional 12 foot hens that means they

cost approximately 12 1/2 cents per foot which is

hard to beat these days. The problem is housing and

feeding. Our bam door measures 10 feet by 10 feet.

Can these chickens squeeze in if they stoop down?

We have three small children and a couple of dogs.

Would they be safe to play in the yard or would these

chickens just eat grain? Then there is the problem of

the egg. What do you do if you're downhill from the

egg? Run? I purely hate to pass up a bargain but all things

considered, I just don't think we're ready for 12 foot

hens.

Dear Editor: I wish to submit to this little helpful paper another
remedy for bee wasp stings. Get small bottle of
amonia at drug store and just apply to the sting several times. Keep bottle handy in the home. It
seems to keep the swelling down. Also, another one for chigger bites: Condensed
milk like we get to cook with applied to the bites
makes them stop itching. Mrs. J. M. C. Cartersville, Georgia

Horses,
mules, ponies
for sale
People who are buying and breeding horses should ask to see the registration papers before leaving premises. The MARKET BULLETIN has received numerous complaints of people who buy a horse with the seller promising to send papers later and the papers never appear. The MARKET BULLETIN has no jurisdiction over such instances. A smart buyer and or person breeding a mare will ask to see the papers first.
In order to qualify to advertise horses, horse farmers should have had the livestock advertised in their possession 60 days or more before offering it for sale through this publication.
All horses offered for advertisement through the Market Bulletin should have a negative coggin test within the past 60 days.
On recommendation of the State Equine Board, at stud notices are published in the Farmers and Consumers Market Bulletin during the prime breeding season only, January through April.

Boost Fescue
Georgia cattlemen with fescue pastures can give the grass a growth boost this fall by applying 40 to 60 pounds of actual nitrogen per acre. Bill Sell, Extension Service agronomist, says the N should be put on in early September to activate new growth. Sell added that wellfertilized fescue will continue to grow until daytime temperatures drop below 45 degrees.

per month during the growing season is suggested. We do not recommend putting the fertilizer solution in the plant's cup. Plants can be fertilized every other month during the winter.
Water: The plant's cup should be kept filled with water. The soil should be kept moist but not soggy. In fact, the soil can be allowed to dry between waterings.
Flowers: Aechmea fasciata will usually bloom when it is 3 years old. Younger plants can be forced to bloom by treating them with an ehtylene gas releasing compound. After a plant blooms, young plants or suckers (called pups) will form at the base of the rosette. When these become about 6" long they should be split from the parent plant and potted.

Slice First

Baked loaves of bread should be sliced before freezing, suggest Extension home economists. Then the frozen slices will pull apart easily and thaw quickly when fresh bread is needed.

These unusual melons were grown by 84 year old Troy Rucker. Botanically they are Cucumis melo var. Dudaim but are commonly known ras--pomegranate melons, queen aim's pocket melons or smell melons the latter being the most appropriate as these little melons pack a lot of "smell". We have not been able to determine any use for them but if you know of one, please let Mr. Rucker know. His address is 12145 Charlotte Drive, Alpharetta 30201.

THE SUNFLOWER
Sunflowers could become an important cash crop in the South someday. That's the prediction of the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Economic Research Service. ERS says sunflower oil contains a high percentage of polyunsaturated fatty acids, and is therefore of particular interest to people concerned with heart disease and blood cholesterol levels. Refined,' bleached, and deodorized sunflower oil makes an excellent salad oil, says ERS.

What 9a Sofigfcum?
Sorghum is the family name for a large group of grasses cultivated throughout the world for food, forage and syrup. The plants resemble maize (Indian corn) and grow to a height of three to fifteen feet.
Although sorghum is less nutritious than maize, it is more versatile in its growing requirements. It likes long hot summers, requires very little water and thrives in a variety of soils.
Historians claim sorghum originated in Africa and Asia. It was one of the first wild plants to be domesticated by man and evidence of its cultivation and use have been documented to 2200 BC.
Basically there are four types of sorghum: grass, grain, broomcorn, and sugar.
Grass sorghums are used entirely for hay and pasture. They have been grown in this country since the mid 1800's. . Broomcorn has been grown in our country since the late 1700's. The branches of broomcorn are used for carpet and whisk brooms.
Sugar sorghum did not flourish in the United States until about 1850. The plants are tall and leafy and the canelike stalk contains a sweet juice which can be boiled down into a syrup.
The South's association with sorghum syrup was a direct result of the War Between the States. Since sugar was not available, sorghum syrup was substituted as our sweetening agent.
Sorghum has often been incorrectly called molasses. True molasses is actually a by-product of sugar cane syrup. In sorghum, the syrup is not crystallized into sugar but is used in a pure concentrated form.
