Farm Labor Skills
Need Improvement
Long before the word agribusiness was coined, it was changing. The pushplow powered by human muscle and sweat gave way to the oxen and a crude pull plow. The mule as a work animal started an evolution in agribusiness
that created hundreds of thousands of new jobs and occupations in manufacturing, distribution, marketing, banking, transportation and many others.

Some agricultural economists and engineers will argue that the industrial revoluation and nonagricultural factory competition for labor forced the agricultural industry into a runaway automation. Those of us who deal in human resource development and utilization may choose not to deal in philosophical "chicken and the egg" debates on factors that contribute most to the agricultural automation process but we are keenly aware of the displaced or rr v gee farmworker population that automation and technology have left stranded on a sea of dispair.
Unfortunately the production of food and fiber, development and application of improved fertilizers, chemical and herbicides, marketing principles, other technologies and automation process crowded in on the farmers' time and talents to the detriment of developing and improving the work force skills, talents

Dear Editor:
Is fresh com, frozen this year, safe to eat? I am very much confused now that this aflatoxin is in much of our com fields in Georgia. It makes me wonder if its safe to eat the fresh com we have frozen. Will appreciate an answer as soon as possible.
A Concerned Mother

[According to Mr. E. E. Winstead, Director of our Seed
Division, unless there were visible signs of mold on the
ears at the time the corn was frozen, there should be
absolutely no problem with aflatoxin.]
Dear Editor: I am a graduate student at the University of Georgia
initiating my doctoral research. This research will focus on some of the nutrient aspects of the pitcher plants, Sarracenia, in south Georgia.
I am attempting to locate any and all locations of these plants in the state. Some of the sites will be used as study sites. Others will be maintained as reference sites. But, overall, all will be used to provide general information on these plants in their natural habitat in the state.
Those who know of such locations please write to me. I will then send maps if necessary so that locations could be pinpointed. This will allow me to then make field observations as well as talk to the people who wrote. Such a source of information would be most valuable.

Horses, mules, ponies
for sale
People who are buying and breeding horses should ask to see the registration papers before leaving premises. The MARKET BULLETIN has received numerous complaints of people who buy a horse with the seller promising to send papers later and the papers never appear. The MARKET BULLETIN has no jurisdiction over such instances. A smart buyer and or person breeding a mare will ask to see the papers first.
In order to qualify to advertise horses, horse farmers should have had the livestock advertised in their possession 60 days or more before offering it for sale through this publication.
All horses offered for advertisement through the Market Bulletin should have a negative coggin test within the past 60 days.
On recommendation of the State Equine Board, at stud notices are published in the Farmers and Consumers Market Bulletin during the prime breeding season only, January through April.

Peach Growers Add Member
Georgia peach growers have voted to include a public member on the committee which administers their federal marketing order. This provision was included in an amendment to the order which regulates handling of peaches grown in Georgia. The amendment was approved by 80 percent of peach producers voting in a recent referendum.
The public member will serve on the marketing order's Industry Committee which recommends to USDA grades and sizes of peaches which will be shipped under the order. The amendment also terminates the Distributor's Advisory Committee which reviews crop and marketing conditions; change the requirement for holding referenda on continuing the marketing order; and ends compensation for attendance at committee meetings.
The marketing agreement and order for Georgia-grown peaches authorizes grade and size regulations and minimum standards of quality and maturity for peaches marketed in interstate commerce. These regulations are designed to promote orderly marketing and help the Georgia peach industry maintain a steady market. The program has been in effect since 1942.

Regular Horse Care

Increases Dollar Value

A horse is worth what a buyer is willing to pay. Since the value of a horse cannot be determined by any present system of grading or objective measurement, much still depends upon intangible impressions. Some of these are related to an animal's true worth while other of these intangibles simply reflect on emotional values which affect the behavior or buyers.

A short, bright hair coat reflects most of all a healthy horse. It cannot be created by use of any magic hair conditioners applied to either the inside or outside of the animal. Balanced nutrition, effective parasite control and plenty of brushing are still the best formula known to produce good condition in the hair.
The nutrition and worming programs must be in good shape long before the sale in order for the horse to look its best. 'Brushing, washing and grooming of the hair can be done during the last few weeks if the horse has good general health and condition to begin with.
During the summer months, it will
Beekeepers Conference
The 1977 annual conference of the Georgia Beekeepers Association will be held September 16 and 17 at the Rural Development Center in Tifton.
All those interested in beekeeping are invited to attend. Cost for the program and dinner is $15.00. For additional information contact your local Extension personnel. Registration deadline is September 12.

be necessary to protect sale horses
from sunburning. This will require keeping the horses confined during the daytime and turning them out in the mornings and evenings or
perhaps overnight. Hoof care is another area of con-
ditioning that is often neglected. To be effective this too must begin well
in advance of the sale. Growing horses will respond to considerable
corrective-trimming provided this is started well in advance and involves gradual shaping and realignment of
hoof structures. Older horses will often benefit from shoeing at least during the last weeks before a sale.
Horse buyers need to be educated so that they will penalize an obese
animal in the show ring and will favor horses that are in a "fit rather than fat" condition.
Weanlings and yearlings should
be thoroughly halter broken at an early age and then given an inten-
sive "refresher course" just prior to the sale.
When buyer and seller meet, horses should be represented as
honestly and completely as possible. Although it is possible for a seller to
conceal important defects from the average buyer, this will be a costly mistake in the long run.

Farm Labor (Continued From Page 1)
and life styles to keep pace. Agricultural production farming
became so capitol intensive in the late fiftees and early sixtees that farmers plowed all of their resources into machinery and technologies neglecting wage scales, training, housing, fringe benefits and the overall development of the farm work force.
It is not an unusual occurance to find a farmer entrusting a $20,000 piece of equipment into the hands of a non-trained, almost illiterate farm worker paid $2.00 an hour. The misuse and neglect of equipment, fertilizers, herbicides, chemicals and seeds are costing the farmers of this state millions of dollars each year. Equipment down time on the farm due primarily to neglect of main-
tenance and operator negligence is disgraceful.
Although the agricultural work force has declined, there remains a critical need for farmwork labor for-
ce skills and farm management skills that deal with worker needs, i.e. good personnel practices including wage rates, fringe benefits, housing and overall working conditions.
The Rural Skills Center is a project designed to meet these needs. The Center is operated on the ABAC campus and provides training in operating procedures, maintenance, welding and repair of farm equipment and machinery. For more information on the Center, contact me or Jesse Chambliss, Director of the Rural Skills Center, ABAC Station, Tifton 31794.

THE MARKET BULLETIN

Dr. Wen Williams [facing camera] and ag economics students visit Farmers' Market, Atlanta, GA.

Fossil remains in France and Italy indicate that figs were abundant before the Stone Age. Wild figs were cultivated first in Arabia or Egypt and historians say that no other fruit, except the date, grape, and olive, was as important to the people of the early civilizations as the fig.
Figs were a staple food of the Greeks and were so highly prized that exportation was forbidden by law. Figs were considered sacred. They were used in religious ceremonies throughout the Mediterranean world.
Explorers spread figs throughout Europe. Spaniards brought figs to America and by the end of the 16th century, figs were well established in St. Augustine and Mexico.
The fig of commercial value is the Fiscus carica and is a member of the mulberry family. There are numerous ornamental figs including the Indian rubber plant, the strangler fig and the creeping fig.
California is the major commercial producer of figs in the United States. However, figs are widely grown in Georgia backyards and produce good crops of fruit annually.
Figs are classified as semi-hardy. They can survive colder temperatures than citrus or dates trees but in the northern part of our state should be planted in a protected location.

Future Bright, Jobs Available

For Agricultural Economists

Agricultural economists are kept in top demand in this nation and around
the world because of the critical needs for economical food production, adequate incomes and expanding farm-related services.

Production Down
on Georgia Seed
Due to the extreme drought over most of the State, Georgia Seed Development Commission reports there may be reduced yields of foundation peanuts and soybean seed.
The extended drought over most areas of the State since spring will mean reduced production of most seed crops unless more rainfall is received shortly. Those producers that have irrigation equipment report their water supplies are being critically reduced.
Most farmers indicate the drought approaches the severity of 1954-55 drought. There is still time to make a fair to good yield of peanuts and perhaps soybeans but time is running short. Many growers report they are having more difficulty with insect problems this season than in the past. Worm damage in corn and peanuts has become severe.

Graduates interested in the economics of rural development, re-
sources and environmental control are employed by rural development
centers, chambers of commerce, area planning and development commissions, governmental agencies and other institutions.
Increasing services to farmers are creating more jobs than ever in agri-
cultural economics, according to Dr. Steve Brannen, chairman of the
agricultural economics division at the University of Georgia. "The graduating (ag econ) student has many choices available to him," he
said. "Even a few years ago when the job situation was tight, agricul-
tural economics majors were still finding jobs."
The student in agricultural economics learns to apply the principles of economics to "decisions that confront the agriculturalists," Dr.
Brannen continued. "It is this relevance that makes agricultural economics what it is in terms of offering wide career opportunities."

Novelty Contest Seeks Creations

The Georgia Farm Bureau and the
Georgia Agricultural Commodity Commissions are sponsoring a contest for the best novelty item representing a Georgia product.
The novelty must be made from one or more of the commodities listed or some part of its plant, or made to resemble or represent the commodity. (Cartons or containers of commodities are not eligible.)
More than one commodity can be used in a novelty but it can only be judged in one commodity category. The multi-commodity category is for novelties that contain or represent three or more commodities.
The commodities categories are: cotton, feed grains (corn, soybeans, etc.) forestry, fruits and vegetables (apples, sweet potatoes, peaches, etc.), livestock (cattle, swine,
horses), peanuts, pecans, poultry
(eggs and broilers), tobacco and the multi-commodity category.

Contest deadline is October 24. For more information and contest rules contact your local Farm Bureau Office.
COOK WITH HONEY?
Honey may be used, "measure for measure," in the place of sugar when preparing puddings, custards, pie fillings, baked apples, candied and "sweet-sour" vegetables, salad dressings and cinnamon toast, according to Cathy Sigman, Extension Service home economist
foods. And she says that honey brushed or drizzled on ham during the last half hour of baking adds flavor and gives a golden glaze.
Land Values Land values in the United States have more than doubled since March of 1972, according to a report from the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

The City of Atlanta Police Department is soliciting tax-deductible do-
nations of horses for use in their mounted patrol. Horses should meet the following qualifications: minimum 15'3" hands, 3 to 7 years, gelding, quarter horse, non-specific color, normal conformation. A 30 day testing period is required before final acceptance. For information contact Central Atlanta Progress Vice President Larry Fonts, First National Bank Tower, 2 Peachtree
St. NW, Atlanta 30303, 404/6581877.

Unseen diggers
Hard To Avoid
Chiggers are almost invisible to the naked eye but can be readily identified by the annoyance they cause. From three to six hours after an individual has walked through tall weeds and grass an intolerable itching begins, usually around the ankles, knees and wrists. Severe dermatitis results that can last a week or more.
Chiggers do not penetrate the skin as commonly believed. What they do is inject a digestive fluid in the skin that disintegrates the contents of surrounding cells and the disintegrated cells are used as food. When the chiggers are fully fed, they drop
off the host. Chiggers lay their eggs on vegeta-
tion and the newly hatched larva remains quiescent in a shady spot near the top of low-growing vegetation. They are activated by air current carrying carbon dioxide characteristic of an approaching vertebrate hosts. In general, chiggers feed on a multitude of mammalian hosts, including man .
After being in an infested area, take a hot bath or shower using lots of soap. Apply an antiseptic to welts. To prevent itching, apply a local anesthetic.
A Day 9u Tke
The second annual "A Day In The Country" will be held September 24 and 25, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. in North Fulton County. The fair is located off Highway 372 near the Birmingham Community.
