Aflatoxin Needs
Quick Action
When reports of the possibility of a serious aflatoxin problem in Georgia corn came to my office two weeks ago I realized immediately that Georgia farmers and grain dealers must be informed and all steps possible needed to be checked and taken to avoid an even more serious problem. Georgia farmers and grain dealers could suffer lost markets and losses in poultry and livestock could quickly occur if action were not taken.
A check with laboratories testing corn samples and with veterinary
specialists and research technicians quickly revealed the seriousness of the situation. Farmers and farm leaders throughout the state began calling my office with information and for assitance and advice. Members of my staff were briefed on the Aflatoxin problem and instructed to begin working around the clock to secure the necessary equipment and personnel to begin running Aflatoxin tests on corn samples at all four of our grain grading laboratories, as well as the feed lab in Atlanta. Aflatoxin tests at federal and private grain grading labs cost the farmer from $23 to $42. However, I felt we should provide this service free to Georgia farmers as they have had about all the expense they can tolerate after such a disasterous crop year. In the meantime, I have contacted and been working closely with officials in the Food and Drug Administration, the U.S.D.A. the Ag Research Service and the Cooperative Extension Service, as well as the grain dealers association. All of these agencies have been most cooperative and anxious to assist the Georgia grain farmer and dealer. The Food and Drug Administration has been requested to give administrative approval for the use of an ammoniated process that will detoxify corn. This is a new experimental process, but I have been told by technicians that it has been successful in reducing the toxicity in corn from (Continued On Page 8)

Fall Army Worms Aflatoxin Problem Serious

Continue Fight For Corn Farmers, Dealers

Fall Army Worms are infesting Georgia crops. Although Army Worms appear annually, they are heavier and hungrier than usual this year.

Farmers and grain dealers need to be aware of the seriousness of the Aflatoxin problem in Georgia this year. There is a lot of good corn in Georgia but it must be separated from the bad through tests and chemical analysis to protect both farmer and elevator operators.

The most widely recommended chemical Sevin, has not been able to control the worm in many areas according to farmers who have turned

There has always been a limited amount of toxin in a few lots of corn everywhere. However, in the past, most of the toxin occurred in corn

to other chemicals for help. Some of the substitute chemicals,
however, are limited in their suitability for certain crops. Lannate, Nudrin, Azodrin, Dylox, MethyIparathian and Toxaphene have been found effective in the control of Fall Army Worms but may be used only on those crops for which they are recommended.

The County Fair of the 1890's will be held at the Georgia Agrirama over the Labor Day weekend. Activities start at 7 p.m. September 3 and will be open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. September 4 and 5.
The fair will feature the same exhibits and contests that Americans experienced at a fair of the 1890's including horseshoe tournaments, hoop rolling contests and pie eating competition.

that was harvested with high moisture and remained in a trailer for several days before drying or the toxin occurred in harvested corn which was not properly dried.
In the past, we have had only a limited problem with Aflatoxin in the field. To have mold damage in the field, it is usually necessary to have hot, dry weather for a long period of time as well as some type of injury according to Dr. Norman McGlohon,

green or black stripes should call the Georgia Department of Agriculture or their local Extension personnel for information on using substitute chemicals.

The Agrirama is a recreated farm and rural village of Georgia of the late 1800's. Admission is $2.00 adults, $1.00 for children and is Seated on 1-75 in Tifton.

the areas suffering most from drought also have more molded corn.
Unfavorable weather conditions at harvest time along with improper harvesting, drying and storing contribute to the production of mold and aflatoxin. Basic practices to reduce

Dear Editor: The most unusual method of cooking eggs is at-
tributed to the early shepherds who it is said were able to cook eggs without fire by placing them in a sling and whirling them around so rapidly that the friction of the air heated them to the exact degree of doneness.
I am in the Resthaven Rest Home in Buchanan but I have been a farmer almost all my life and wish with all my heart to be out in the country. I saw some recipes for canning in cold packing canner but the house cleaner threw it away before I could get a good look at it. Can you send me this information.

People who are buying and breeding horses should ask to see the registration papers before leaving premises. The MARKET BULLETIN has received numerous complaints of people who buy a horse with the seller promising to send papers later and the papers never appear. The MARKET BULLETIN has no jurisdiction over such instances. A smart buyer and or person breeding a mare will ask to see the papers first.
In order to qualify to advertise horses, horse farmers should have had the livestock advertised in their possession 60 days or more before offering it for sale through this publication.
All horses offered for advertisement through the Market Bulletin should have a negative coggin test within the past 60 days.
On recommendation of the State Equine Board, at stud notices are published in the Farmers and Consumers Market Bulletin during the prune breeding season only, January through April.

Anemones are one of the world's oldest plants. In the Sermon-on the Mount, the lilies of the field were mentioned as being more gorgeously arrayed than 'Solomon in all his glory'. The lilies were most probably anemones which are so brilliant in the spring.
As natives of the Middle East and Holy Land, anemones traveled as corms in the ballast of ships returning Crusaders to their homelands.
The Ranunculaceae anemones produce three-inch flowers of blue, scarlet or purple. Depending on the variety anemones can be the first blooms of spring or they can be part of the beauty of fall. All are easy to grow and require little attention.

To Test Corn

To sample corn: take a scoopful from several locations and at different depths in a bin or truck. Mix these samples and send at least one half gallon of corn hi any type container [need not be moisture proof] to one of the grain-testing laboratories. If hogging off, pull ears from several areas of field, shell corn and submit to labs.
Grain testing will be offered as a free service but due to the tremendous number of samples anticipated, farmers are urged to send hi no more than one suspected sample per bin or truck.
Lab reports will be issued as soon as possible. Gram grading samples may be submitted to these Department of Agriculture labs hi Georgia:
Ga. Dept. of Agriculture Gram Grading Lab Bronwood, Georgia 31726 912/995-5868 or 5869

Aflatoxin Needs
Quick Action
(Continued From Page 1)
1200 parts per billion to 15 ppb, which is below PDA allowances.
It may be necessary in the future for grain dealers to invest the little amount of money required to purchase the necessary equipment to check grain samples for Aflatoxin and train one of their employees to make the test. A great deal of research is being done on ways and means to detoxify contaminated corn.
In this issue of the Market Bulletin, you will find further information on the Aflatoxin problem and our testing service.
If further information is needed, contact your local Extension personnel or the Georgia Department of Agriculture.
Full Freezer Should the power go off at your house, remember that a freezer full of food will stay cold many hours longer than a freezer only a quarter full.

Aflatoxin Problems
(Continued From Page 1)
formation of mold and aflatoxin according to Johnny L. Crawford, Extension Plant Pathologist: 1. Letting corn mature to 23 per-
cent to 24 percent moisture on the stalk. 2. Adjusting combine for minimum cracking and maximum cleaning of grain. 3. Drying all shelled corn as soon as possible but within 48 hours
of combining. 4. Cooling after drying. 5. Storing in good dry storage.
6. Aerating stored corn where feasible.
7. Storing "high moisture corn" in
airtight structures. Mold growth will be stopped if corn is dried to 14 percent of lower. Aflatoxin that was present will remain but no new growth will occur
at this level. Other articles in this BULLETIN
pertaining to Aflatoxin include a message from Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin, instructions on sending your sample of corn for testing, and a chart showing the affect of Aflatoxin on animals at varying parts per billion.
