Good Or Days
At Agrirama
Cooking biscuits on a wood stove, taking corn to the grist mill, a Sunday afternoon buggy ride, turning land with a Dixie Boy plow, milking the cow early in the morning and many more are all daily activities at Georgia Agrirama in Tifton, Georgia.
The museum complex, administratively under the State
Department of Agriculture, is charged with the responsibility of systematically and permanently preserving a forgotten way of life hi rural Georgia during 1870-1899. Since opening to the public on July 1, 1976 over 52,000 visitors, of which 12,000 were school

children, have enjoyed an educational glimpse into Georgia's past.
Using a living history approach, employees are dressed in period costumes for then- daily activities, visitors actually can see how life was before the turn of the century. Presently, Agrirama is only one third complete. During a visit, over 22 structures can be toured including an 1896 farmhouse and out buildings, an 1886 log cabin, an 1879 grist mill, an 1888 printing press, an 1882 church, an 1879 commissary, cotton gin, blacksmith shop and country store. All the buildings are in operation. Upon completion, Georgia Agrirama will feature over 60 structures including a complete historical village with opera house, barbershop, boarding house, general stores, school, etc. and an educational building and museum.
During the last years the Georgia legislature has appropriated to Georgia Agrirama $1.4 million of the needed $3.9 million to complete the project. Besides the obvious benefits {that Georgia Agrirama is fulfilling) of historical preservation and education, many other dividends are also being received by the people of Georgia. First, the capital value of the development is now estimated to be ap-

Are You Eligible Dangerous Aflatoxin

To Use Pesticides
State and Federal law requires that all private pesticide applicators (mostly farmers) be licensed or certified by the Georgia Department of Agriculture in order to purchase or use restricted use pesticides after October 21, 1977.
The U.S. Environmental Prottection Agency defines a restricteduse pesticide as one which could cause damage to man or the environment even when used as directed on the label. Pesticides not identified for restricted-use will be classified for general use and be available to the general public without certification.
Georgia farmers will find it to their advantage to become certified so they can continue to purchase and use the pesticides needed on their farm. You may become certified by attending a pesticide training course given by the Cooperative Extension Service. Upon completion of the training, the Georgia Department of Agriculture will provide the certification license. There is no charge for the training and certification.
EPA is in the process of reclassifying all pesticides. The first

Found In Some Ga. Corn

An extremely dangerous fungus or mold known as Aspergillus flavus which creates a toxic agent known as aflatoxin in corn that has been damaged by drought and insects has been found in some Georgia corn.

Disaster Payments
May Be Changing
For Wheat, Grain
Wheat and feed grain farmers who have no acreage allotments or who have overplanted their allotments for these crops may become eligible for government disaster payments under the Farm Bill agreed to by congressional conferees, according to Rufus Adams, Chairman of the Georgia Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Committee.
Under provisions of the Conference Bill, a farmer who has suffered reduced yields due to a natural disaster may be eligible for a payment based on the number of acres actually planted for harvest, Adams said. In the past, payments were based on the farm's allotted acres.
In anticipation of possible adoption by Congress and enactment by

Illness or death for thousands of head of livestock will result unless farmers use extreme care. A host of agricultural workers have begun organizing on both the state and federal level to battle the threat and help salvage what's left of the state's corn crop.
"The Department of Agriculture is purchasing laboratory equipment that will enable the state's four grain grading laboratories and state chemical lab to test corn before its use or sale hi an effort to do everything this Department can to help Georgia's farmers through yet another regrettable crisis," Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin said.
There is some difficulty in finding all the equipment needed to properly equip the labs but it is hoped that the labs will be ready in a few days.
Irvin is conferring with Undersecretary of Agriculture John White in Washington while his staff members coordinate their efforts with agricultural specialists from the University of Georgia and veterinary specialists from the state's poultry and livestock disease diagnostic laboratories.

Family Research

Seminars Planned

A delegation representing the Georgia dairy industry went to Washington recently to investigate possible sources and assurance of disaster assistance for all eligible Georgia dairymen and farmers. While there the group conferred with President Jimmy Carter, Frank Moore, Presidential Assistant, Senators Talmadge and Nunn and Mr. Fitzgerald of USDA ASCS Office. Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin, represented by Cliff Ward [far left] said he believed the group to be very instrumental in assuring relief for eligible Georgia farmers. With Ward [left to right], Bill Higginbotham, Director Milk Producers and Member ACC Milk, Bill Moore, Executive Director Georgia Milk Producers, Inc., Roy Holt/claw, Milk Producers and ACC member, the President, Rudolph Clark, President Georgia Milk Producers, Inc.

The snowballing interest in family
research has led the Georgia Genealogical Society to offer simultaneous research instruction sessions for beginning and advanced researchers, according to W. .
Thomas Edwards, Jr., President of the non-profit organization.
The all-day, concurrent sessions will be offered on Saturday, September 10 at the Sheraton-Biltmore
Hotel, 817 W. Peachtree St., NE, Atla'nta.
Reservations for either of the 8:45
to 4 PM instruction sessions may be made by sending a check for $10.00 which includes the luncheon to GGS, Box 38066, Atlanta 30334. For information call 233-8798 between 7 and 9 PM.

Chigger Bite Prevention

Dear Editor: I appreciate your promptness in answering my
request for the MARKET BULLETIN. In it I find so many things that is valuable to my daily living.
I would like to pass this valuable tip on to hunters
and fishermen. Before going where you will be exposed to redbugs, sudticks or chiggers, before dressing cover your body with cheap powder [dime store shaker cans work fine]. It fits the tackle box or
pocket so you can add more later around ankles, etc. I am in my late seventies and still enjoy fishing and
hiking in the woods. It works. Mrs. Lattie Evans

Chigger Bite Remedy

Dear Editor:

I would like to give the readers of the BULLETIN an

old recipe for chigger bites:

1 pint rubbing alcohol

2 bars camphor gum

Dissolve camphor gum by cutting into small pieces

and add to alcohol. Shake well and apply to chigger

bites. Members of my family are not without this

remedy and I give it to all my friends.

Horses,
mules, ponies for sale
People who are buying and breeding horses should ask to see the registration papers before leaving premises. The MARKET BULLETIN has received numerous complaints of people who buy a horse with the seller promising to send papers later and the papers never appear. The MARKET BULLETIN has no jurisdiction over such instances. A smart buyer and or person breeding a mare will ask to see the papers first.
In order to qualify to advertise horses, horse farmers should have had the livestock advertised in their possession 60 days or more before offering it for sale through this publication.
All horses offered for advertisement through the Market Bulletin should have a negative coggin test within the past 60 days.
On recommendation of the State Equine Board, at stud notices are published in the Farmers and Consumers Market Bulletin during the prime breeding season only, January through April.

Lemons are the most popular acid citrus fruit. They are produced on small trees which grow to a maximum height of ten to twenty feet and grow only in warm dry climates such as California and Arizona. The humidity found in the southeastern United States and Hawaii is not conducive to lemon production.
The origin of lemons is somewhat obscure but thought to be near northern Burma or China. Records show that lemon juice was served to the Emperor of China in the 971 A. D.
Lemons were introduced to this country from Spain in the St. Augustine settlement. From here, Spanish Franciscans carried fruit seed with them to Mexico in the 1700's and from there established a mission in San Diego, California. From this beginning, California grew to be one of the largest lemon producing areas in the world.
Lemons have long been valued for more than just their taste. In Colonial days, sailors on long voyages discovered that an ounce of lemon juice daily prevented scurvy, In the 15th century, lemon peel was commonly used as a toothpaste. And, everyone knows that sipping hot lemonade will help cure a cold. Lemons in fact do provide up to 80 percent of your daily needs for vitamin C.
Witches also found lemons useful in performing their craft. In Europe names of victims were written on pieces of paper and pinned to a lemon. This was supposed to cause misfortune and death.
The nutritional and culinary value of lemons, however, have more than offset their association with magic and their worldwide popularity grows everyday.
KEEPING POTATOES
If your Irish potato crop is late, you're in luck. Late potatoes store better than early ones, say Extension Service horticulturists. They keep well in a basement, cellar or cone-shaped pit.
SAFE TOYS Only parents can recognize their child's abilities, so it's up to parents to choose toys with safety in mind. Cecil Hammond, safety expert with the Cooperative Extension Service, recommends passing up toys with sharp edges, and he says electrical toys should have the UL label. Projectiles for missile toys should have rubber tips and given only to older children who understand their potential for injury.

Late Summer Gardening Tips

Crape-Myrtle: A second blooming of crape-myrtles can be obtained many years. When the flowers begin to fade, cut them off. This cutting will encourage a second blooming.
Fertilizing and Watering Annuals: Annuals should be fertilized once a month during the growing season. One teaspoon of a general fertilizer per square foot is generally satisfactory.
Many annuals tend to be shallow rooted and therefore require a lot of water. During this hot dry season it will be necessary to water thoroughly every day.
Mulching: Check the mulch in

the President, and to speed resulting payments to farmers, Adams said, ASCS will begin accepting disaster claims from all farms for wheat and feed grains (corn, sorghum and barley). However, no payments may be made under these provisions until enactment of the Farm Bill.
Farmers who wish to file or refile a disaster claim or who wish more information concerning the disaster payment program should contact their county ASCS office or agricultural service center.
Aflatoxin
(Continued From Page 1)
consumption is 20 parts per billion. The Aspergillus flavus fungus
develops when corn in the field is damaged to the extend the mold spores can get beneath the shuck. Once the mold comes in contact with moist grains of corn, it produces the toxic agent aflatoxion.
Aflatoxin poses a serious death threat to young animals and poultry, and death or dangerous side effects to adult animals. The order of susceptibility ranges from turkeys
first to chickens, calves then swine. Department veterinary specialists
say from 50 to 100 parts per billion
in the feed could cause heavy
mortality in turkeys and to a lesser
extent, hi chickens but even where
mortality does not occur, the toxic
agent would seriously impair growth
and weight. More than 150 parts per billion
would incur heavy mortality by swine under eight weeks of age and inhibit the growth of older swine, while grown cattle might handle up to 400 parts per billion without any visible effects but with serious side effects such as abortion.
The tolerance level for dairy cattle is absolutely zero because aflatoxin is a carcinogenic agent and is secreted directly into the cow's milk. The Department's constant testing of milk both at the farm level and the processing level would prevent such milk from getting to the consumer, although the presence of aflatoxin would play havoc for the dairy farmer who could not sell his product.
Farmers should check corn still in the field to determine just how much damage it has suffered. Aflatoxin should be suspected wherever the corn shuck has been damaged to the extent the fungus could get beneath the shuck and cause the aflatoxin to develop.
Commissioner Irvin has assigned the highest emergency priority to the problem.

your planting beds. It may be
necessary to add additional mulch because of biological decay of existing mulches. Remember that these mulches help conserve moisture around the plant. Two commonly used mulches are pine straw and pine bark nuggets.
Azaleas: It's too late to do extensive pruning of azaleas. Azaleas are beginning to set bloom buds for next spring. Also in this category are forsythia and all other early spring blooming plants.
Garden Mums: You should have already pinched your garden mums. Now you should be on the lookout for insect and disease problems. Aphids commonly attack mums at this time of year. They usually cluster on the young succulent growth. Leaf distortion results from heavy infestations. Also look for leaf spot diseases. These diseases usually appear as circular brown and black spots on the foliage.
Bulbs: If you haven't already, now is the time to inventory your yard and get a count on the number of bulbs, such as tulips and daffodils, you will need this fall. To insure success with these bulbs you will need to purchase and plant them early. Bulbs planted late tend to be hurt by extremely cold winters such as last year.

preaching $2 million. In 1976 alone Agrirama accepted approximately 500 donations of artifacts and buildings, saving the State of Georgia over $250,000 in estimated purchase cost. Local volunteers have generously donated their time to the complex saving the state over $15,000 in personal services during Agrirama's first year of operation.
If development of the museum continues and visitation increases according to our estimates, within five
years the project will become selfsupporting for operational expenses. However, this projection could be severely affected if adequate capital outlay funds for the village development are not provided in future state appropriations.
Due to the generousity and state-wide support of donors, individuals, organizations, and legislators Georgia has in the museum complex a development of which all Georgians can be proud. Georgia Agrirama is a historical attraction through which all ages, from school children to senior citizens, can better understand the great heritage we have as Georgians. It is a development which has the envy of state historical societies and preservation commissions through-out the country because Georgia's State government has taken the lead and expressed a desire and concern to preserve its peoples history.
