A New Era
For Georgia
January 1977 is a time for beginning again. It should signal a new and great era for Georgia, the South and the Nation.
Georgians have always been a proud people, and rightly so. We
are proud to have been one of the first four states to ratify the constitution. Proud to have chartered the first state university and the first college in the world for women.
We are proud to have had the first State Department of Agriculture and the first State Agricultural Experiment Station. Proud of building America's first steamship, first railroad and first gold mining operation.
But most of all, Georgians have always been proud of their heritage . . . their people. Historically, during many lean years, this pride has sustained us when there was little else.
Today, however, Georgia is taking its deserved position of leadership in many areas of achievement. Today we can point with pride to Georgia's first President, to a native son who has been selected by the people of this country to their highest office of leadership...a President to begin again a new era, a new century of progress and prosperity.
Georgia as a state may not directly receive benefits by having our own former Governor Jimmy Carter as President of this country. However, it is inevitable that the indirect benefits will be innumerable as the attention of the nation and the world is focused on our great state.
Already the economic outlook is improving. Attention has been focused on our agricultural crops, progressive diversification and research. Agri-businesses are reporting renewed interest in many of their endeavors. Georgia is on parade. It's time to begin again, to go forward and to prosper.
Productive Farmers American farmers today produce 53 per cent more crops on 6 per cent fewer acres than did their fathers.

Horses,
mules, ponies
for sale
In order to qualify to advertise horses, horse farmers should have had the livestock advertised in their possession 60 days or more before offering it for sale through this publication.
People who are buying and breeding horses should ask to see the registration papers before leaving premises. The MARKET BULLETIN has received numerous complaints of people who buy a horse with the seller promising to send papers later and the papers never appear. The MARKET BULLETIN has no jurisdiction over such instances. A smart buyer and or person breeding a mare will ask to see the papers first.
On recommendation of the State Equine Board, at stud notices are published in the Farmers and Consumers Market Bulletin during the prime breeding season only, January through April.

Puffballs are among the most common, easily recognized and available mushrooms. They are known by intriging names like devil's snuff box, jeweled snuff box and studded puffball but more accurately are species of the Calvatia and Lycoperdon genera.
Puffballs are called "stomach fungi" because they look like a big
pouch. When they first appear, puffballs are firm fleshy globes with little or no stem. Some species have a smooth surface; others have rough cracked or patterned skins. Edible puffballs have firm white flesh. When it begins to turn yellow, then greenish-brown and then dry and powdery resembling snuff, it is inedible. These mushrooms become bitter if the flesh is even slightly tinged yellow. Only when the flesh is snowy white it is considered safe. Puffballs are not poisonous. There is however a similar looking mushroom, Amanita, which is. Don't ever assume that the fungi you have collected is safe. The puffball test consists of slicing the mushroom right down the middle. If the flesh is white, firm and solid it is okay. If you can make out the silhouette of a button mushroom, you've got an Amanita. Giant puffballs have been known to weigh three or four pounds and outer skin can become tough requiring that it be peeled before cooking. A common small puffball can be somewhat pear shaped with a short stem. The white skin may be studded with coneshaped spines that are easily brushed off. It grows in a cluster and is easy to collect in abundance.

Remember The King? For the first three quarters of 1976, cotton prices paid to farmers averaged almost 60 cents a pound. And with a strong fourth quarter finish, the final year's average topped 60 cents for the first time in U.S. history.

THE MARKET BULLETIN

( Straight Line

We have 5 apple trees, approximately 6 years old which we planted 6 years ago. The trees have some blossoms in the spring, but no apples. What can be done to have the trees bear fruit.
W.R., Atlanta According to Dr. Butch Ferree, Extension Horticulturist, there are several factors that could contribute to the unfruitfulness of your apple
trees. 1. The trees are just becoming of age, and young trees often won't set
the first year or two they bloom. 2. You are located in a cool spot, and frost has killed the blooms. 3. You didn't plant a suitable pollinator. Red Delicious and certain other
important varieties require cross-pollination. 4. Diseases and/or insects are attacking the trees during the bloom
period. Hopefully from these you should be able to determine what is causing your problem. Should you have further questions, you may wish to
contact your county agent.

Could you please tell me what this plant is? I found it growing wild in the

woods like a ground cover. Some of the larger leaves grow 6 or 8 inches

high. The vine roots are in the ground. It resembles what I would call the

Tame Cedar Fern.

You should have included your name and address. That is why we have

had to wait and put it in Straight Line. It could have saved you and us some

trouble and time. The plant fragment you submitted for identification is one

of the Lycopodiums. It is similar to Lycopodium flabellifonne [Fernald]

Blanchard [Running-Pine].

Would you please advise how to plant peach seed? E.J.,Dalton
We have mailed you some information on how to propagate fruit tree seeds. Keep in mind that the seedlings will not be like the parent plant. If you desire to have plants like the parent, graft the seedlings with wood from the desired tree. Should you have further questions, you may wish to contact your county agent Larry Thomas. He is located at 420 North Hamilton Street, Dalton and his phone number is 404-278-8207.

I am interested in grafting in order to save the old fashioned Yates apple tree. Could you please help me?
E.L., Douglasville To graft, you will need some good scion wood from a Yates tree and some apple root stocks. Once you've secured these, we suggest you use the attached as a guideline to grafting. Likely, the whip method will be the easiest. Since Yates trees are still propagated by several nurseries in the south, we suggest you contact your county agent Donald J. Morris, for the names of nurseries that sells Yates trees. He is located at the Douglas County Courthouse, Douglasville, Ge*o*rg*ia, 404-942-3432.
I am enclosing 2 photographs of a plant that I found growing near Baxley by a pig pen. I like the plant and it has been growing in my yard. They stand from 3 to 10 ft. tall. Although the plant has been growing in my yard for several years, no one has ever identified it. What is it?
O.B.,St. Simons The photographs you submitted are good but not all of the important floral parts are visable. Because there is no way to key your plant without flowers, we can only guess its identity. The only native plant that seems to fit the obvious morphological features is Leonotis nepetaefolia R. Brown. This naturalized member of the Mint family is not known by a common name. If you would like us to verify this identification, please send a flower "cluster" that contains two or three dried corollas [flowers].

Farm Efficiency
U.S. farmers are the most efficient in the world, and one of the reasons is an abundance of modern equipment and machinery. Check this comparison between Russia and the United States: The Soviets have one tractor for every 265 cultivated acres; the U.S. has one tractor for every 88 acres. The Russians have one combine for each 460 acres; the U.S. has one combine for each 150 acres.
