Future Bright

For Soybeans

While soybeans are in good economic shape at present and are one of the bright spots for american agriculture, it is no time to relax efforts and start wearing rose colored glasses. We must continue our efforts to get better acre production and carry on market development work for expanding sales here and
abroad. The period of May 17th, through
June 15th, will be the tune
frame for balloting on the check off referendun for soybeans in Georgia for another three year period. The soybean commission is quite I proud of your support the past six years and is also proud of the returns brought to growers with the expenditure of the commission funds. In the field of research solid accomplishments have taken place

that are being used by Georgia

growers. Some of the research

projects initiated with commission

funds have been more or less "seed

money" that has brought large

research grants of federal funds to

carry on the projects.

Shortly we will have new varieties

that will work better for growers

who double crop with small grain.

Our research people in Georgia have

beaten some new paths for soybeans

and look to the future with more ac-

complishments hi making this crop

better and better from an economic

standpoint.

Although the American soybean

association

has

market

development work going in 55 coun-

tries, it is a well known fact that

more opportunities for soybeans

usage are ready for promotion and

development as soon as funding is

available. North Africa and Middle

East are prime examples of this op-

portunity.

Domestic promotion of soy oil is

being undertaken because of the

palm oil imports and its competition;

part of this palm oil production was

Lack of Rain

Hurts Ga. Crops

Representatives from the Georgia Homemakers Council recently presented Governor George Busbee a handmade cotton quilt, individually pieced by members of the organization. Pauline Williams, State Cultural Arts Chairman, and Mary Ellen Hartley, State President, made the presentation. The 100 percent cotton quilt is the winner of the Cotton Creations contest annually sponsored by the Agricultural Commodity Commission for Cotton through the Georgia Homemakers Council.
D.W. Brooks Receives Two Beekeeping Events

The lack of any significant rainfall in Georgia during April and May has severely hurt crop conditions in central and south Georgia.
In most areas soybean farmers have quit planting and many peanut farmers have not been able to get their crop in the ground. Corn, tobacco, vegetables and other crops planted in April and May are barely holding their own.
As THE BULLETIN went to press Friday, May 20, the weatherman was offering a little hope of scattered thunder showers throughout the state for the next few days, but no good, gentle rain was in sight.
The chart below shows the critical nature of the drought.

Shining Light Award
D. W. Brooks, Georgia agribusiness leader, has been named recipient of the 1977 Shining Light Award.
A leader in the United Methodist Church, Brooks, a native of Franklin
County, Georgia, has achieved national prominence for his role in developing America's agricultural i potential. The Georgia AgribusiI ness Council presented him its first Agribusiness Award in 1975, in recognition of his "mayor contribution to, and support of, agriculture and agribusiness in Georgia." His Atlanta-headquartered Gold Kist, Inc., a farm supply and marketing cooperative, is one of the "Fortune 500" companies. The Shining Light award is sponsored by WSB Radio and the Atlanta Gas Light Company.
Farm Progress Tour
Seventy five Georgians will be attending the 25th Anniversary Farm Progress Show in Washington, Iowa, in September. If you would like to be one of them, write J. E. Burnside, Rural Development Center, Post Office Box 1209, Tifton 31794 for tour and show information.

Scheduled for June
Two beekeeping events have been planned for June.
The annual beekeeping short course for beginners and experienced beekeepers will be offered at the University of Georgia in Athens on June 11. Those interested should contact Dr. Alfred Dietz or Dr. Tom Sanford, Department of Entomology, University of Georgia, Athens 30602.
A seminar in hobby beekeeping is also scheduled for June 18 at Columbus College. Registration fees ($15.00) and information requests may be sent to William Bowman, Community Services Division, Columbus College, Columbus 31907.

Undergoing Support Changes

The U.S. House Committee on Agriculture has approved legislation that

will convert the existing peanut allotment system to an allotment/poundage

program and would set price supports for the 1978-1981 crop years at not

less than $420 per ton. This minimum level may be adjusted upward by the

Secretary of Agriculture based on increases in production costs and other

factors.

"This is not a perfect Bill by any means," Mr. George Whelchel, Chairman of the Georgia ACC for Peanuts, said, "But I believe that it is a Bill that the Georgia peanut farmers can live with. I am reasonably confident that both the House and Senate will approve the Bill in

substantially its present form. It is the judgment of our friends in Congress that without some changes
in the present law we are in serious danger of losing the peanut program
entirely." The new peanut program is part
of the General Farm Bill now before (Continued On Page 12)

PULPWOOD LEADER
Pulpwood production dropped 14 per cent in Georgia in 1975, but the state still led the South and the nation. Extension Service forester Ted Walker said Georgia produced almost 7 million cords. Seventy-four per cent was roundwood, and the remaining 26 percent came from sawmill residue.

CARE OF TIN
Tinware, bright and shiny when new, tends to darken with age. Extension home economists say it's actually a better heat conductor after it has darkened. So don't scour tin it might remove the coating and rust the base metal. Instead, wash utensils in suds and rinse well. Be careful to dry the pieces thoroughly. * * *
Aluminum Tip
If your aluminum pots and pans have become dark from cooking, try ^boiling some apple pe/efings''*ifir them. The utensils will brighten almost like magic.

Day lilies are common and abundant throughout America. Until a few decades ago they were regarded as little more than attractive weeds, but naturalists and hybridizers have put the flower in a different category.
Hybridizers have developed numerous varieties in a rainbow of colors, some holding their blooms until evening, others having more than one blooming season. Such interest has developed that the American Hemerocallis Society was formed, the name taken from the botanic title meaning day and beauty.
Naturalists on the other hand have proven that daylilies are not just to be aesthetically enjoyed - they are also edible. Recommended methods of preparation include picking the unopened buds, boiling a few minutes, buttering and serving or the more familiar method of dipping the buds in batter and quickly frying.
Day lilies can be compared to okra in taste and yet they have a distinctive flavor all their own. This taste has long been appreciated in the Orient and the blooms and buds are an important vegetable in China and Japan.
In the garden though is where day lilies are really the prize winners. They are tough, healthy and beautiful plants. They will grow most anywhere as long as there is plenty of sun.

THE MARKET BULLETIN
Yellowjackets, Hornets And Wasps

Hornets, wasps and yellow jackets have similar life histories. It is the location of their nests and number of workers that vary.
Yellow jackets have jagged bands of yellow and black on the abdomen. They usually build nests below the ground, often in an abandoned rodent hole or other preformed cavity.
Hornets are larger than yellow jackets. They are black with whitish markings. Their nests are globeshaped paper nests above ground which hang from tree limbs, bushes, etc.
Wasps build paper nests above ground under the eaves of buildings, in windows and beneath outdoor furniture. Some wasps are confused

the Congress. If the Bill becomes law, existing peanut farmers will be assigned a quota based on the three highest of the last five years of their production. Quota production of peanuts will be reduced over the four year period beginning next year to bring supplies into line with the domestic consumption of edible peanut products, such as peanut butter.
However, peanut producers will be permitted, if they so choose, to grow up to their existing allotment acres with over quota production going for export or crushing which is at a lower price than the domestic support rate.
Georgia produces about 46 percent of all peanuts grown in the United States at a value to farmers of more than $250 million.
Peanuts are produced in 80 counties throughout the southern portion of Georgia.

with yellow jackets but they are more elongate and are slower fliers. Wasps vary in color from dark red to yellow but are never as brightly colored as yellow jackets.
In summer and early fall, yellow jackets become especially troublesome as they search for food to take back to the underground nest to feed the young. They are attracted especially to any food stuff, garbage, etc.
When yellow jackets, hornets and wasps are foraging away from their nests they usually will not sting unless they are confined or molested. The greatest danger from these insects lies in the disturbance of their nests. They are extremely protective of their nest sites and become painfully aggressive when their colonies are disturbed.
However, the most effective method for controlling hornets, wasps and yellow jackets is to locate and destroy their nest. It is best to treat the nest at night and if possible when it is cool. Above ground nests should be removed and destroyed after all insects have left the nest. Nests in the ground require retreatment after 24 hours to insure complete kill.
Recommended insecticides include Sevin 1 percent spray or dust, chlordane 2 percent spray or 5 percent dust, diazinon 0.5 percent spray, Vapona 0.5 percent spray, Baygon 1 percent spray ronnel 1 percent or pyrethrin spray.
For nests in walls treat the entrance hole with an insecticide every day until you no longer see the entrance being used.

Short Weighted
Several large quantities of prepackages fertilizer and soil increment products shipped into Georgia primarily for use by potted plant enthusiasts have been found shortweighted resulting in stop sale orders being issued by Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin.
"Our inspectors discovered the shortages during routine checking to verify weights printed on bags," Irvin said, adding that some bags labeled 40 pounds only weighed 33. Over 2,000 bags produced by a Florida company were included in the shipments.
The action by Irvin turned out to be a windfall for consumers as store owners were given permission to relabel the bags with the correct weight and offer them for sale at bargain prices.

developed with your tax dollars through international lending institutions, such as world bank and asian overseas development bank. Efforts are being made to stop U.S. funding of palm orchards which will be in competition with soy oil. Brazil will continue to be dur major competitor in soybean production and exports.
We, as growers, cannot afford to relax our efforts in continually seeking new uses and new markets. We have the long time experience in developing markets. In 1940 soybeans were grown on 1.6 million acres in U.S. Now we grow roughly 56 million acres. That is a success story unparalled by any other crop.
It appears there will be a 35 percent increase in Georgia's soybean acreage in 1977 and with a few breaks with weather, we should have the highest production and dollar value of all time. The commission is also pleased to report that administrative cost of the program has been less than one percent of funds collected and disbursed.
Please mark your ballots and return as soon as received.
