The Earth Is
The Lord's
Soil Stewardship Week will be observed May 15-22 this year. The theme for this nationwide celebration of the soil's gift to man is "When We Care."
As I think of this unique observance and its theme, I am struck by
the course of events that allows you and I, as Americans, to concern ourselves not with producing enough food to keep millions upon millions of foreign people alive. We also have the luxury of being concerned that the agricultural output remains at the current level for the economic benefits of such productions. I am sure that most Americans are

aware of their debt to the soil, but the paradox is that we are allowed to be complacent and let a very small minority do the real worrying. What's more, we get away with it. We can relax and let a tiny portion of the population produce more than enough food for us. Yet every morning, there is still the desperate need to somehow provide 250,000 more breakfasts for the newborn babies of the world.
Why is it that you and I can sit back in ease and know with certainty that our food will be there tomorrow and the next day and the next? I don't know why we are so blessed but I do know that a strong note of thanks is due somewhere and Soil Stewardship Week is the ideal time to give it.
To whom do we owe this thanks, you might wonder. Well, the obvious answer is the Almighty Creator. There is no question that the responsibility for stewardship of the soil is in turn a responsibility to the Lord. There should be added to this,

Dear Editor: Being a trench agricultural student, I am very in-
terested in the different ways of farming all around the world, essentially in the United States. Indeed, I think that the United States is very advanced in agriculture.
A friend of mine who has been working on an American farm gave me your address since you helped her find a job last year.
Maybe you know some Georgia farmer who could get me a job for a month or so this summer. I think I will arrive in the States in August.
I hope you can help me because I would be so happy to know what the American farm life is like.

People who are buying and breeding horses should ask to see the registration papers before leaving premises. The MARKET BULLETIN has received numerous complaints of people who buy a horse with the seller promising to send papers later and the papers never appear. The MARKET BULLETIN has no jurisdiction over such instances. A smart buyer and or person breeding a mare will ask to see the papers
first. In order to qualify to advertise
horses, horse farmers should have had the livestock advertised in their possession 60 days or more before offering it for sale through this
publication. All horses offered for ad-
vertisement through the Market Bulletin should have a negative coggin test within the past 60 days.
On recommendation of the State Equine Board, at stud notices are published in the Farmers and Consumers Market Bulletin during the prime breeding season only, January through April.

rapidly and violently when disturbed. It has green, blue or reddishbrown bands around the body. The lesser cornstalk borer attaches a tube-like, soil-covered silken web to the plant at the soil surface and bores from this web into and up the stem of the plant. The adult is a narrow-winged, gray or brown moth that does not damage plants.
The lesser cornstalk borer feeds on many crops but it is worse on beans, southern peas, peanuts and corn. Almost all row-type grass crops, such as oats, rye and millet, may also be severely damaged. Infestations are more severe during dry years and in light, sandy soils.
Root maggots are headless, legless, white to yellow maggots that destroy planted seed and attack the underground parts of plants. Root maggots are I larvae of flies that resemble small houseflies. Infes; tations usually develop in soils that contain a lot of decaying organic matter. Crops most often damaged are corn, beans, cabbage and greens.
THE MARKET BULLETIN
Mole crickets are velvety, brown or gray insects that have broad rake - and shovel like front legs. They make small, raised, mole-like trails as they burrow just under the
soil surface. They uproot seedlings, cut off small roots and eat pits in the larger underground parts of plants.
Cutworms cut plants off at the soil line, cut leaves from stems or chew holes in leaves, usually at night. These caterpillars may gouge gaping pits in larger plant parts. During the day, you can find them curled up in the soil near freshly-damaged plants. Cutworms are the young of grayish
roots and tubers of most crops. The adults feed on foliage but the damage is not nearly as great as that caused by the larvae.
Wireworms are slender, segmented "worms" that chew off, tunnel within, or score the underground parts of plants. They kill or
weaken plants and damage root crops, such as sweet potatoes. Wireworm tunnels are usually oneeighth inch or less in diameter.
Wireworm adults are slender, flattened, brown or black beetles. Called "click" beetles, they snap themselves into the air with a "click" when placed on their backs. The adults do not damage plants.

beetle larvae are yellowish white, fat, legless curved insects up to 1A inch long. The adult * "" -" is a dark gray beetle that has a broad white stri-
pe down each side of the body. It has a short broad snout and is about 2 inch long. The larva feeds on the
Consumer Tips
Know the difference between a "special purchase" and a "markdown"? Both may yield good bargains, according to Extension home economists, but the first is usually merchandise the store buys from a manufacturer at a low price. A "markdown," on the other hand, is a lower price on goods that have been in the store for some time.

Diagnosis:
Neurosis
I had a lot of aches and pains And groaned most all the time, Now I'll tell it like it is In a form more truth than
rhyme.
When "Cabin Fever" gets you down
It's hard to diagnose, But deep inside I felt dark brown Uncertain and morose.
I felt a throbbing ache somewhere,
A pain 1 could not trace; I hurt all over, worse, I guess Than any other place.
I cranked my Rototiljer up And turned some good red dirt; The odor of that Georgia soil Soothed every place I hurt.
Now that's the honest truth, And I think you will agree Psychologists should recommend This effective remedy.

Technically, wild onions are members of the Allium family. They are one of the most abundant and widespread natural foodstuff in the world. There is no such thing as a poisonous one but there are some, that are better flavored than others.
All onions have the definite bulb base with slender grasslike leaves. Other members of the Allium genus, such as chives and garlic, have hollow leaves, but not the wild onions. If left untouched, wild onions will bloom in July or August.
Onions can be pulled green in the spring or dug in the fall like tame onions. They can be used in recipes calling for onions but the flavor will be stronger and the amount should be adjusted accordingly.
Wild onions also have lots of other uses. Medicinally onion tea or broth has been acclaimed for centuries as a healthful spring tonic. Boil fresh onion bulbs in salted water, strain liquid and drink.
Besides being a tonic for humans, wild onions are great for roses too. Although it is rather'unsightly, wild onions growing with rose bushes will improve their stamina, double their perfume and reduce their susceptibility to black spot!
Wild onions grow in any type soil but invariably seem to prefer the front yard. These alliums probably won't have time to reach appreciable size before they are mowed down but you might try chopping the fresh green tops in a tossed salad. If you can leave a small patch untouched by the -blades of a power mower you may have a chance to harvest your own fresh wftthsnions in late summer.

however, a thank you to a few special people who are the Lord's workers on the land.
There are 324 Soil and Water Conservation District Supervisors in Georgia who work without pay the year around to preserve and protect the soil resources to which this observance is directed. Through forty years of efforts, they have changed the face of this magnificant state from red to green and made it one of the richest and healthiest pieces of land in the entire world.
This work has created a debt that can never be paid except through belief, support and understanding for the need to continue protecting our soil resources. By participating in the Soil Stewardship Week observance sponsored by the Soil and Water Conservation Districts, you can to some degree repay your debt to the Lord and the stewards of the soil.
Newton County
Salutes Agriculture
A "Salute to Agriculture Day" will be presented on the Square in downtown Covington from 10:00 A.M. to 5:00 P.M. on May 28.
The purpose of this event is to make all citizens of the county and surrounding areas better aware of the size and financial investment of the agri-business community in Newton County and the contribution it makes to the financial stability of the county.
The program will be an all day event of displays and demonstrations to include beef cattle, dairy, poultry, swine, horses, forestry, environment, 4H and FFA youth groups, home economics and farm machinery. Hourly feature events scheduled include milking demonstrations, a beef auction, square dancing, live bands and choral groups.
This event is being co-sponsored by the Newton County Chamber of Commerce, County Extension Service, County Farm Bureau, County Dairy Association, Piedmont Cattlemen's Association, Georgia Poultry Federation, Georgia Cattlemen's Association and the Upper Ocmulgee River Soil and Water Conservation District.

report to be issued by USDA June 30, estimating spring planted acreages and acreages for harvest for major crops both nationally and by states. This information will serve as the foundation for a series of yield and production estimates starting July 12 and available during the growing season.
Producers cooperation is essential in pulling together a reliable set of estimates for use by all farmers and ranchers.
Ga. To Host South's
Largest Farm Show
Georgia will be the site in 1978 of what planners hope will be the largest agricultural gathering in the South since the 1895 Cotton States Exhibition.
Speaking for a planning committee of agricultural leaders from six Southern states, Dr. Charles Ellington, director of the Cooperative Extension Service at the University of Georgia, outlined plans for the educational event that he estimates will attract tens of thousands of Southern farmers to Georgia for the three-day event.
The show is planned for October 10, 11 and 12, 1978 at the 1600-acre Spence Field, formerly a military air base near Moultrie, and is sponsored by the Georgia Extension Service's Rural Development Center in Tifton, Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College, Georgia Coastal Plains Experiment Station, the City of Moultrie and "Progressive Farmer Magazine."
It is estimated that there will be more than 300 acres of demonstration cropland and several hundred exhibitors representing agribusiness and major land-grant colleges in the South.
Sell Timber
Landowners are advised not to rush into a timber sale because of a so-called good offer. The real question, says Extension Service Forester Ted Walker, is whether the timber needs to be removed. "It is foolish to cut timber that is growing faster than currently available interest rates. Odds are in favor of higher stumpage values in the future," he adds.
