Peanut Program
For some time now the future of the peanut support program has been up in the air. It has been discussed, debated, studied, hashed over and rehashed. Change was and is inevitable.
Our new administration's Secretary of Agriculture Bob Bergland
appointed a task force to study the peanut support program and make recommendations to him on changes needed in the program.
When the report was submitted to the Secretary, peanut farmers were justifiably upset. The price support recommendations for the next four years were unacceptable. After further study and more meetings, Secretary Bergland presented a new four year projected support program. This, too, was disappointing to our peanut farmers, but it is better. (See chart A) There has since that time been a move by some growers throughout the country (Virginia, North Carolina, Alabama, Florida, Georgia and others) to totally reject the ad-

Energy Shortage
Conference Topic
A Wood Energy conference will be held at Georgia Tech, June 6-7, from 10:00 AM - 4:30 PM. The two-day conference is jointly sponsored by Georgia Tech, Engineering Experiment Station, and the Georgia Forestry Commission.
The conference is being held for representatives of small industries that would use wood as a heat source; members of various trade associations, educational groups, chambers of commerce and leaders of state and county governments.
The energy shortage, created by the extreme cold of this past winter, pointed out the urgent need for such a conference.
For additional information, contact the Georgia Forestry Commission Box 819, Macon, Georgia 31202(912)744-3251.

Georgia Farmers Are Assured of Quality Fertilizer

It's spring time and fertilizer time. Georgia Department of Agriculture field inspectors take samples of fertilizers sold in Georgia for testing in the Department's labs to insure that the fertilizer meets the requirements of the state fertilizer law.

Here samples are being pulled from trucks and from the feed, seed and fertilizer store.

These samples are brought into the labs where they are sorted and numbered. Here, Richard Gray, Chemical Lab Technician, and Harry Johnson, State Chemist, separate and number the samples for testing.

After numbering, the samples are ground into a fine powder and mixed well so they will be representative of the origianl amount and stored into pigeon holes for testing. Some 10,000 to 12,000 samples are tested each

Horses, mules, ponies
for sale
In order to qualify to advertise horses, horse farmers should have had the livestock advertised in their possession 60 days or more before offering it for sale through this publication.
People who are buying and breeding horses should ask to see the registration papers before leaving premises. The MARKET BULLETIN has received numerous complaints of people who buy a horse with the seller promising to send papers later and the papers never appear. The MARKET BULLETIN has no jurisdiction over such instances. A smart buyer and or person breeding a mare will ask to see the papers first.

Blackberries need no introduction. They are readily available, easily ; dentified and universally appreciated for their plump black fruit.
One of their most beautiful features is enjoyed in the spring - the delicate white flowers. Blackberries' family tie to the rose family is evident in the flowers which look like clusters of tiny wild roses.
After the bloom comes the fruit. When ripe it is a lustrous black color and ready for picking to make pies, jams, jellies and other heavenly concoctions.
A seldom appreciated edible part of blackberries are the canes before the prickles harden. The tender sprouts must be gathered as early as possible; peel and add to tossed salads.
Blackberry juice made from fresh crushed berries mixed half and half with lemonade makes a great summer cooler. Medicinally, blackberry juice "straight" was highly regarded as one of the best natural remedies for "summer complaint" otherwise known as diarrhea.
Blackberries are one of the most abundant and delicious wild crops in America. They can be found from Canada southward, particularly in the mountainous regions.

THE MARKET BULLETIN

Peanut Program
(Continued From Page 1)
ministration's proposal. I agree that the Secretary's
proposals are not ideal. The support prices are disappointing to Georgia peanut growers. However, it seems to be the best solution to a bad problem at this time.
In fact, our Georgia Congressional leaders have warned that unless we accept these changes we may very well lose the entire program in Congress and be stuck with world market prices.
There are a few bright spots in the

program that need to be considered. We have a new and friendly administration that is attuned to the Georgia growers problems. There is room for negotiation if we do not act hastily and jeopardize our bargaining position. These figures are MINIMUM figures and can be adjusted upward each year by the Secretary.
In addition, even though the peanut program has been cut rather drastically, peanuts faired better in the proposals than other commodities where the Secretary's recommendations for 1978 were much lower based on parity percentages. (See chart B.)

Written Warranties
(Continued From Page 1)
has spelled out certain requirements to be met by "Full" and "Limited" warranties on products costing more than $15, effective as of December 31, 1976.
Warranties now must specify who they protect, for example, the original purchaser, his or her family and/or subsequent owners. They also must identify what parts are covered, and, clearly what parts are not. The warrantor must spell out what will be done to correct defects, and, if there is any confusion, what he won't do. The warranty must plainly state when it begins and give a step-by-step explanation of the procedure to follow in using the item. Exclusions or limitations on damages must be written in specific language. Information on consumers' legal rights should be included as well as information on any informal dispute settlement procedures.

Georgia is blessed with the ability to grow all three varieties of the peanut, Runner, Spanish and Virginia. In fact, during the 1976 production year, Virginias out yielded, per acre, the Runner and Spanish. As Georgia peanut growers look to the future, I would like to urge you to assert a position of leadership in all areas of peanut production. We already produce more peanuts than any other state. Our area, Georgia, Alabama and Florida, produce 50 percent of the nation's entire supply. We need to assume our position of leadership in the market place, as we have in the production field.
If Virginias are fairing better than Runners at the market, and their yields have been proven, it seems this is the variety our farmers should consider.
Let's join together to keep peanuts number one in Georgia, to keep our options open and to get the best possible deal and return on our dollar through negotiation and leadership.

Beef Bargains
Beef is plentiful right now and is expected to remain that way through late spring. That's the word from the U.S. Department of Agriculture. USDA says supplies of fed beef are on the rise largely because of the number of cattle placed in feeds lots late last summer and early this fall. Supplies of non-fed beef are also heavy, according to USDA.

year. These represent a cross section of all fertilizer manufactured and consumed in Georgia.
Samples are then tested. Pete Madonia, Chemical Analyst, tests samples for percentage of nitrogen.

After the nitrogen lab, the sample is tested by Russell Hosch, Chemist, for trace minerals such as copper, zinc, manganese, boron and iron.

After testing is completed hi the lab, farmers and consumers can be

assured the fertilizer they buy, whether by bag or truck, either in
dry or liquid form, contains everything the label states.
