Short Courses
Benefit Farmers
Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College started a program of adult education (now called Continuing Education] in 1940. The program was for the benefit of farmers, who were invited to stay at the college for a week. We soon learned, however, that farmers could not be away from their farm that long. The courses were gradually shortened until, now, practically all of them are just one day courses.
Allowing for lunch breaks, and an early enough adjournment to
i allow everyone to get home at a reaI sonable hour, i about five hours I of study can be included in a typical [ course. A great i deal can be dis, cussed in that (time by doing away with preliminaries and sticking to the vital issues. We had to feel our way into this program, since no other junior

college we knew had sponsored such an activity. During the first two years, twenty-eight short courses were held, with a total attendance of 1,329. By that time, the United States was in World War II. Labor was scarce, travel was limited, and I joined the Navy; so short courses were largely discontinued until the war ended.
In 1946, the short courses were resumed on a full-time basis. The programs were expanded to include ladies and businessmen. During the last twenty years, we have held between forty and fifty short courses annually, depending on the need. From 1940 until July 1, 1976, a total of 1,146 short courses have been held, with a total attendance of 179,726.
Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College has not done this alone. Many organizations have cooperated with us. Practically all agricultural short courses are sponsored jointly by the College, the Coastal Plain Experiment Station, the Cooperative Extension Service,

Improving Fruit Harvesting

Good News For Producers

A newly designed mechanical tree fruit harvester can harvest fruit more than twice as fast as current harvesters with much less operator fatigue.

Once I hated this red old clay It stained the clothes of my child at play. It packed so hard in the garden spot And cracked and dried when the weather
was hot. Now that I've lived in another land Where the soil was gray and filled with sand I love these red old Georgia clays That's molded and shaped in a thousand ways And can grow anything when treated right And has my love, locked in tight.
Bernice Brantley

The new harvester moves continuously down the row of trees in a straight line while a track-mounted device seeks out, grabs, and shakes the tree, dislodging the fruit. Fruit falls to an apron and is conveyed to pallet boxes for transport to the processing plant.
Many tree crops are harvested mechanically with a wide array of commercial machines that employ trunk shakers to remove the crop and inclined catching surfaces to collect the crop. However, all of these machines must stop at each tree where several operations are performed to control the shaker and position the collecting surfaces around the tree.
Improving these machines might improve the harvest rate slightly, say engineers Donald L. Peterson and Gordon E. Monroe assisted by Cecil C. Patterson, machinist, and Robert N. Gupton, mechanical engineering technician, at the Southeastern Fruit and Tree Nut Research Station (P.O. Box 87, Byron, GA 31008). However, the ARS research-

Early Detection
Stops Brucellosis
Brucellosis or "Bangs" disease appears to be on the increase in dairy herds in Georgia.
Brucellosis can present a very serious economic problem as several in Georgia can attest. It can put you OUT OF BUSINESS and warrants every dairymen's concern.
Most Brucellosis being discovered is due to recent addition to the herd.
The Georgia Department of Agriculture attempts to detect the presence of Brucellosis in herds as early as possible through the milk ring test which is being performed on a constant basis. Early detection is definitely an advantage with infected herds as well as with all other herds.
Regulations which require the following are being enforced . . .
1. All additions to the herd must be tested at the time of the sale. It is highly recommended that these animals be retested within 45 to 60 days after purchase.
2. All additions from out of state must be: (a) tested at the time of the sale (b) quarantined for 45 to 60 days (c) retest negative after quarantines.
THE FOLLOWING PRECAUTIONS ARE HIGHLY RECOMMENDED:
1. Beware of the Seller buy only from reputable dealers who would not sell an animal known to have been exposed to Brucellosis. You may be able to help expose unscru-

Easy Beauty
For Gardens
Bulbs, annuals, and perennials have long been popular as sources of color for the home landscape.
With increasing maintenance problems, it would be wise to reevaluate this source of color.
To reduce the time required to keep an attractive, colorful garden cut down on the use of annuals. If used, they could be displayed in raised beds or against a wall or fence with an adequate edging for better weed and grass control.
Hardy perennials such as Iris and Daylilies could be expanded along with more hardy seasonal flowering shrubs and trees such as Spirea, Forsythia, Quince, Crapemyrtle and Dogwood.

THE MARKET BULLETIN

Dear Editor: I would like to tell you how much I like the FAR-
MERS AND CONSUMERS MARKET BULLETIN. I sure do enjoy reading this little newspaper. To me it is like a little newspaper as there are so many different
things to read about. I would like to ask if any of the readers have these
two gospel songs with the words and music: "Glad Reunion Day" and "I Firmly Promise You I'll Meet you
By The River". If any of the readers have these two songs I would
like to hear from them. Mrs. Mildred Madon 4581 Spring Street, N.W. Acworth, Georgia 30101

Horses, mules, ponies
for sale
In order to qualify to advertise horses, horse farmers should have had the livestock advertised in their possession 60 days or more before offering it for sale through this publication.
People who are buying and breeding horses should ask to see the registration papers before leaving premises. The MARKET BULLETIN has received numerous complaints of people who buy a horse with the seller promising to send papers later and the papers never appear. The MARKET BULLETIN has no jurisdiction over such instances. A smart buyer and or person breeding a mare will ask to see the papers first.
On recommendation of the State Equine Board, at stud notices are published in the Farmers and

Consumers Market Bulletin during the prime breeding season only, January through April.

According to legend, the dogwood was once a mighty tree. Its limbs were straight and strong and it grew as tall and stately as an oak.
Because of its strength it was used to make the cross upon which Christ was crucified. The dogwood was shamed because of the cruel task it was compelled to perform and Christ sensing this declared: Because of your sorrow and pity for my sufferings, you shall grow slender and twisted so that your wood can never again be used as a cross.
Its blossoms were also changed to the shape of a cross, two long and two short petals; and in the center of the blossom there will be a crown of thorns; the outer edges of the petals will show the nail prints, brown as with rust and stained with red, so that all who see them will remember.
Fact is dogwoods did originate in the Mediterranean and their wood is extremely dense and strong for their small size. Their blossoms appear around Easter and do indeed appear to be a reminder of times gone by.

2. Vaccinate calves between the ages of 2 and 6 months.
3. Maintain separation from neighboring cattle as much as possible especially when that neighbor is known to trade animals frequently.
4. Maintain closed herds if possible. Raise your own replacements.
5. Cooperate with the people doing the testing whether they are Federal or State Employees or your local veterinarian, be there to provide assistance or supervise the handling of your cows.
Through the efforts of the Georgia Department of Agriculture, and Southern Animal Health Association, a new ruling has been obtained, that will enable the utilization of adult vaccination as a tool to control the disease in heavily infected herds or in other herds that have proved difficult to clear using present testing and slaughter methods.
This should help those with extreme problem herds but is not a real solution to the over all eradication of Brucellosis.

THE MARKET BULLETIN
Industrious Little Pests Work, Sting And Steal

Ants are perhaps the most familiar of all insects. They are troublesome because of their foraging habits on foodstuffs. Besides being a nuisance, some species bite and sting.
There are many species of ants and they nest in a variety of places including fields, meadows, open woods, dense shade, under stones, logs in rotting wood and in the nests of birds and mammals. Colonies vary in size from a few workers to several thousand.
There are normally three distinct groups of ants: workers, females and males. Males and winged females are usually produced in

spring and early summer. The males die soon after mating and the fertilized female after losing her wings
establishes a new colony. Many ant species are omnivorous
and feed readily on sweets, proteins and fats. Although ants are present
year-round, they are most active in the summer months.
To get rid of ants outside spray with chlordane. Inside, apply oilbase household type sprays where ants enter the building and where ants crawl such as baseboards, water pipes, cabinets, window sills and doors.
Harvesting
(Continued From Page 1) ers knew a dramatic increase in harvest rate could come only by developing a continuously moving harvester. This would mean eliminating all driver operations involved in positioning the shaker and catching the crop. It would all need to be done automatically.
The harvester consists of two independent, self-propelled halves a shaker half and a collector half. The shaker half consists of the automatically sequenced trunk shaker, a fruit-catching surface, and a panel that automatically closes the gap between the two unconnected halves on each side of the tree to form a continuous, gap-free catching surface. The collector half also consists of a catching surface plus conveyors to transport the fruit to pallet boxes. All catching surfaces are covered with a 1-inch-thick layer of expanded polyethylene to protect the falling fruit. The collector half also has storage for four empty pallet boxes and provision for manually loading empty boxes from the side of the machine.
Refinements have been made in the harvester and further testing on a larger scale in commercial orchards is expected during the peach harvesting season this year.
TAX ADVANTAGES Raising beef cattle or hogs as a sideline to a large farm crop operation can have tax advantages. So says Dr. Neil R. Martin, Jr., an agricultural economist at the University of Georgia College of Agriculture. He found through research that, by adding meat animal production to the original farm operation, the farmer can increase after-tax profits.

Short Courses
(Continued From Page 1)
and the Rural Development Center, in Tifton. Since 1971, my office has been in the Rural Development Center, where practically all the short courses have been held. I have no official connection with the RDC, however.
We have a very good procedure for determining the kind of short courses to hold. For the last twenty-five years, we have used an advisory council of approximately one hundred Georgia farmers, businessmen, homemakers, and professional people. We use some of the same people each year, but, each year we have some new faces.
The advisory council is divided into committees of twelve members, or so, to review short courses in their field offered during the past year and decide which ones should be repeated. The committees also suggest what should be covered, suggest appropriate speakers, and suggest three appropriate dates for holding the short course.
Some examples of short courses we hold are: beef cattle, swine, corn, tobacco, peanuts, parliamentary procedure, holiday foods, farm management, fertilizer, irrigation, fashions in home furnishings, estate planning, landscaping, managing farm ponds, soybeans, etc.
In the Spring of 1966, we started offering non-credit evening courses and 1 to 3 week workshops. We have taught 165 non-credit courses, with 4,163 attending, and 74 workshops, with 12,523 attending.
