Bull Buying Made Easier

Selecting and buying the beef herd bull involves some of the most difficult and important decisions that you'll make in your beef operation. The bull contributes one-half the genetic makeup of his offspring. Therefore, since the bull may sire from 25 to 50 calves per year, he is the most important individual in your herd.
Prior to the last 20 years or so, buying a beef bull was pretty much a
I guess-work situatjion. In those days, I cattlemen normal\ ly bought bulls on the basis of personal preference such as color or they may have considered the showring winn_ ings of a particular herd. Many producers considered only price in buying a bull. However, today, there is a scientific method of helping to assure you that you will be buying a bull which

will improve your herd. Animal Scientists have determined that bulls which are superior in certain economically important traits as weaning weight and post-weaning gain can pass part of this improved performance on to their offspring.
Let's consider an example of a situation in which two bulls were equal except that one of them was 50 pounds heavier at weaning and gained 50 pounds more on performance test than the other. With this situation, we can estimate the value of the better performing bull. Assume the following conditions: (a) Each bull sired 130 calves during
the time he was used on your farm. (b) Each bull was used on cows with equal performance ability. (c) The bull calves from each bull were fed to slaughter weights and the heifer calves were sold at weaning. With these conditions (and eliminating the mathematical computations), we can estimate that the superior performing bull would be

Dear Editor:

.

Do you have any information on dipper gouras.' i

see the seed advertised frequently in the BULLETIN

but am unfamiliar with their purpose or what they

look like.

Name withheld by request Atlanta, Georgia

Editor's note: Dipper gourds have been used for generations as drinking cups and small bowls. They are easily grown from seed and will provide an abundant crop.
Dipper gourds need to be planted early. In fact the best way is to^plant them indoors and transplant outside when

the danger of frost has passed. They require a fairly rich soil and should be spaced at least three feet apart. They must have support to develop their characteristic shape so they should be planted near a fence, clothesline or wire where they can climb.
Let the gourds hang on the vine until after the first few frosts. The freezing temperatures will harden the shell. After picking, let the gourds dry in a cool, airy place for about two months or until the seeds rattle. Draw a circle on the gourd before you start to cut the

hole. Trim the hole, scrape out inside, save the seeds, and your gourd is ready to use.

One of our readers advises that while the borax for roaches is great in attic or basement, you should not put it around the outside of the house because it can kill the shrubbery.

SMOKED FISH

6 dressed fish, 1 pound each, 1 cup salt

fresh or frozen

1 gallon water

1/4 cup salad oil

Thaw fish, if frozen. Remove the head just below the

collar bone. Cut along the backbone almost to the tail. The

fish should lie flat in one piece. Clean and wash fish. Add

salt to water and stir until dissolved. Pour brine over fish

and let stand 30 minutes. Remove fish from brine and rin-

se in cold water. To smoke the fish, use a charcoal fire in a

grill with cover or hood. Let charcoal fire burn down to a

low even heat. Cover with 1/3 of the wet chips (prepared

by soaking 1 pound of hickory chips or saw dust overnight

in two quarts of water). Place fish on a well-greased grill,

skin side down, about 4 inches from the coals. Cover and

smoke for 1 Vi hours. Add remaining chips as needed to

keep the fire smoking. Increase the temperature by ad-

ding more charcoal and opening the draft. Brush fish with

oil. Cover and cook 15 minutes longer or until fish is

lightly browned. Serves 6.

What is the most common

houseplant, the easiest to grow, the

hardest to kill, and one of the

simplest to multiply

naturally

philodendron. To most gardeners,

philodendron isn't even a challenge.

However, for the amateur green

thumbs who plant bulbs upside

down, forget to put water in vases

of cut flowers and drown african

violets, philodendron is the perfect

houseplant. Unless you deprive

your philodendron of water for more

than a week and broil it in direct

' sunlight, it wid survive even the

most irresponsible caretaker.

There are philodendrons in the

wild that produce leaves large

enough to sleep under and stems

strong enough to support Tarzan.

This houseplant variety, however, is

very tame.

P. cordatum is a climber and

needs some type of pot support

such as a small trellis, wire cone

or tree bark. The heart shaped

leaves are of varying sizes, about

one inch when unfurled and about

four inches when mature.

The leaves should be sponged

occasionally with soap and water to

keep the leaves shiny and remove

'any dust or dirt. To propagate, cut

a piece of stem with at least two

joints and place in either water or

potting mixture.

Wildlife Films

Free To Public
Every winter the Atlanta Audubon Society sponsors a series of wildlife films. These films are of interest to anyone who loves the "outdoors". They are personally narrated by rangers or biologists who live and work in the area where the films are made.
The wildlife films are shown the first Saturday of every month at the Walter Hill Auditorium in the Atlanta Memorial Arts Center. The next film program is for March 6.

Alumni Seminar
A special one-day seminar on "Georgia's Role in World Agriculture" is being planned for University of Georgia alumni and friends March 20 in Tifton.

Bull Buying
(Continued From Page 1)
responsible tor producing almost one ton more beef than the poorer bull during their respective useful lifetimes on your farm. Using this example and current beef prices, the better bull should be worth at least $500 more than the poorer performing bull. In addition, the better bull should be worth more at salvage time and he should sire heifers which should be worth more when kept in your herd.
Since the cattle price disaster which occurred in late 1973, many cattle producers have postponed the purchasing of bulls. The discouraging price situation has caused many commercial cattlemen to try to get by another year with the bulls which they have.
Well, it has now been over two years and many producers find that they must replace some herd bulls this year. Even though you may feel inclined to cut costs in your cattle operation, there are many places to economize in your beef operation rather than to skimp when purchasing herd bulls. Agronomists have said for years in crop production that fertilizer does not cost, but that it pays. The same comparison can be made with bull buying good bulls pay more than they cost, while poor ones are expensive at any price.
Many purebred beef producers
in Georgia have been on a performance testing program for many years. This program, called BCIA or their own breed association programs, has resulted in the identification of these superior performing bulls.
In addition to the on-the-farm testing programs of the individual breeders, there are three central bull testing stations in Georgia. They are the Tifton Bull Gain Evaluation Station at Tifton, the Northwest Georgia Beef Bull Gain Evaluation Station at Calhoun, and the Rollins Research Center at Berry College. In these central stations, breeders may consign bulls for post-weaning gain evaluation and they are then compared with each other on their rate
of gain and other traits. Bulls must meet rigid qualifi-
cations in order to be consigned to these stations and then only the top performing bulls are allowed to sell at the end of the test. This kind of evaluation takes much of the guess-
work out of bull buying.

Farm Safety Month

(Continued From Page 1)
An agitator stirs the liquid, adding oxygen. The presence of the oxygen activates bacteria which produce odorless carbon dioxide. Were oxygen not added, other bacteria, that produce hydrogen sulfide would take over. Hydrogen sulfide is what gives animal waste the smell of rotten eggs.
Once every three months the waste is run off into a holding pit, from which it can be used to irrigate and fertilize fields.
Quality Hogs "An EPA representative inspected the facilities and was pleased with our design," Hale says. "But not only does a set-up like this meet with federal waste disposal and odor control requirements, it should also mean better, more efficient operations for Georgia swine producers.
