Cotton's Future
Hangs In Balance
The future of U.S. cotton could well depend on the choice producers make in the upcoming referendum on increased research and promotion assessments.
A favorable vote will show that cotton growers are determined to stand up and fight for their markets.
The referendum comes at a time when cotton has a lot going for it.
I Consumers for the first time in years are demanding cotton's natural look and inherent comfort. New products that combine these natural assets with the advantage of durable press are beginning to come on the retail market in response to consumer demand. And cotton's bat-

tie for markets has gained encouraging momentum.
This momentum didn't just happen by itself. It has come about because of the aggressive, hardhitting research and promotion programs carried out on producers' behalf by Cotton Incorporated.
But serious threats to cotton's continued momentum have arisen in the meantime. Inflation, smaller crops, and loss of supplemental government funding all have hit hard at cotton's research and promotion dollars.
This combination of factors makes it impossible for cotton research and promotion to continue at the same level much less to.expand to meet the challenge of new problems. CI's budget for the coming year is the lowest it has been in five years.
Synthetic fiber producers, on the other hand, are stepping up their research and promotion efforts by millions of dollars. We can't expect to match them dollar for dollar in spending, but we can and must bolster our efforts and use our funds in the most effective way possible. CI already has been making producers'

A two-year career program was introduced at Gordon Junior College, Barnesville, in the fall of 1973 upon approval by the University System Board of Regents and is one of only two horticultural career programs offered by
junior colleges in the system. Since its introduction, the program has proved quite
popular with students and the community. Biology and botany instructor John Roberts, who organized the program and has taught most of the courses, said it provides an alternative to agricultural programs which

demand more extensive study. "The program's main objective is to produce a middle
man who is trained in doing physical work related to plant care and who has a general knowledge of horticulture," Roberts said.
Ornamental Horticulture can be completed in six quarters of course work. Horticulture courses offered are principles of plant growth, principles of soils, and environmental design.

We Need Jo Know
Valve Of Buffetin
Each year as we prepare for our budget presentation to the legislature, the question arises: Wonder how much the BULLETIN means to the state's economy? We wonder how many of you were able to buy and sell merchandise through the BULLETIN that you would not have otherwise. Does the BULLETIN help you financially?
On page 5 is a questionnaire we would like for you to fill out and mail to us. You need not sign your name. No attempt will be made to determine who replied and who did not. However, we need to hear from as many of you as possible in order to get a good cross section and indicator of our usefulness. Please take a few minutes to help us help you. Send the form to: F&CMB, P. O. Box 38110, Atlanta 30334.
Poetry Contest
A grand prize of $1000 is being offered in a new poetry competition sponsored by the World of Poetry, a monthly newsletter for poets.
For rules and official entry forms write to: World of Poetry, 801 Portola Dr., Dept. 211, San Francisco, California 94127.

Seeks Horses, Carriages
The 10th annual Atlanta Dogwood Festival Parade on world-famous Peachtree Street, April 2, 1977, seeks the largest number of floats, marching units, horses and especially horse-drawn rigs for this year than ever before. There is no fee for participating equestrians, but application forms must be filed with the parade committee.
To obtain these forms or additional information, contact the Atlanta Dogwood Festival Parade Committee, Post Office Box 49292, Atlanta, Georgia 30359, phone (404) 6338622.
Cotton Board
Appoints Members
Six new members and their alternates have been appointed to the 20man Cotton Board, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The new members will serve through Dec. 31, 1979.
New members and alternates for Georgia are: Dolan Brown of Twin City and John H. Harris of Cordele.
Georgia Turkeys
Georgia is expected to produce 1,890,000 turkeys this year - 55 percent above last year's yield. Based on October, 1976, prices, this will mean more than 10 million dollars in cash farm receipts from turkey production in Georgia.
Although the number of turkey producers has dwindled in recent years to just about a dozen, Georgia is still the 10th largest turkey producer in the nation.

Pick All-American
The Georgia Pork Producers Association will this year select a young producer as Georgia's Pork All-American. The winner will be honored at GPPA's Annual meeting in Tifton, December 16. And he will receive a check for $300 from Shell Chemical to be used to pay his expenses to the American Pork Congress in Des Moines next spring.
Nominees for this award must be between the ages of 25-39 and receive a substantial part of their income from swine.
If you know a producer who you feel should be considered, contact Larry Lee, P. O. Box 584, Perry, Georgia 31069, Phone 912/987-5920, as soon as possible.
This is the time of year for reflection . , . thanksgiving. It's a time for lifting grateful hearts in prayer. . . and for taking joy in all life's
little miracles.

Dear Editor: This is a picture of a Chattanooga F-50 reversible
plow. Would any of your readers have any information on it? All we can find out is that it took three mules to pull it. We would like to know when it was made and
maybe how many were made. Ms. Larraine Bryant 6352 Valhalla Drive Douglasville, Georgia 30135

Dear Editor: I want to attract cardinals to my house this winter.
Is there anything special I should put out for them? Miss Nellie Jones Macon, Georgia
(Editor's note: Cardinals like bread crumbs, cracked corn and sunflower seed. Dried baked goods are always good
as are rolled oats. Sometimes they even like crushed egg i shells.)

Horses, mules, ponies
for sale
In order to qualify to advertise horses, horse farmers should have had the livestock advertised in their possession 60 days or more before offering it for sale through this publication.
People who are buying and breeding horses should ask to see the registration papers before leaving premises. The MARKET BULLETIN has received numerous complaints of people who buy a horse with the seller promising to send papers later and the papers never appear. The MARKET BULLETIN has no jurisdiction over such instances. A smart buyer and or person breeding a mare will ask to see the papers first.
On recommendation of the State Equine Board, at stud notices are published in the Farmers and Consumers Market Bulletin during the prime breeding season only, January through April.

Straight Line

Can you tell me where I can get a few pounds of good old country corn meal? All I get is bolted it's really corn flour and it's awful.
Mrs. C. W., Port Royal, S.C.
Well, we understand that practically all of the small
country corn mills have slowly faded into the past and
that it is almost impossible to find "unbolted" cornmeal.
The only mill located near you that uses the old type of
corn rock is Miller's Mill. This meal is sifted or bolted but

folks seem to like it. It is in many of the markets around Savannah, not too far from you.
***

Can you give me the name of the new pasture grass that grows year round in Georgia?
B.E.,Collins

We are not familiar with a grass that grows year round. Kentucky 31 Tall Fescue stays green most of the year but it has a short dormant period in mid-summer when it is dry and another one hi mid-winter when it is

extremely cold. We asked your county agent to assist you

hi this.

***

I need to know the right time to harvest artichokes so they will keep and not swivel up.
C. S., Bearing
Artichokes are composed of living cells and will lose weight because of respiration and transpiration. Respir-
ation can be reducd by storing at a low temperature [a few degrees above freezing]. Transpiration is reduced by providing a humid environment. Extended storage nor-
mally requires some air flow to remove unwanted gases and replace the used oxygen. So, the next time you munch down on an artichoke, rememer it's ALIVE.

I would like to know the best breed of cattle, hogs and corn for the south Georgia area, Lowndes county.
P.M., Detroit, Mich.
Ain't no way for us to pick out the "bestest" of everything for you. We suggest that you contact the county
agent there, Mr. George Kessler, for his advice. He can furnish material as well as the benefit of personal exper-
ience in that area. Good hick.

What 9a OM Wait And WigW Ceiew?
If there was ever a cactus that deserved its name, the Old Man cactus is it. Instead of typical sharp spines, the column-shaped plant has long white hair.
Like all other cereus, the Old Man cactus has the fluted columns without joints. These plants should never be allowed to go completely dry or they will shrivel.
Most cactus collections have at least one old fogy but the glamour associated with having an Old Man cactus is rivaled by the ever-popular night-blooming cereus, a name give to almost every cactus that blooms after dark.
Names like "queen of the night" have been used to describe the exotically fragrant cereus with its large white or light pink flowers unequalled in the plant world for their spendor.
When you see a fluted stemmed, snakey-looking cactus crawling around tree branches in south Florida or the tropics, come back after dark for a spectacular show. Some of the wild varieties have more than 50 blooms atone time.
There are varieties of night-bloom ing cereus that will thrive as a potted plant and can be enjoyed here in Georgia. During the warm months, a night-blooming cereus in a hanging basket suspended from a tree limb is quite happy, but when temperatures begin to fall, bring your warm-weath er baby inside.

A neighbor came into my home When I was sick in bed, She gave me all her sympathy, Then plaintively she said, "If I can help in any way, Don't hesitate to say, If not, I've many things to do, So I'll be on my way." Another neighbor quietly came In through the kitchen door; She washed up all the dishes And scrubbed and waxed the floor. She made my bed more comfortable And tidied up the room;
She lifted up my spirits As she hummed a happy tune. No thanks she sought, her only aim To help me on my day of pain. She clearly showed above all else She loved her neighbor as herself.

Cotton's Future
(Continued From Page 1)
advertising dollars go a long way by placing consumer ads on The Today Show, football Bowl games, and others. This is the kind of approach it takes to protect and expand cotton's markets.
In addition, we've got to push our research efforts to the utmost to come up with answers to the pressing problems of byssinosis and flammability. Unless we do, no amount of promotion money will be able to save cotton's markets.
That's why the only way we can keep cotton's market momentum alive is to provide adequate funding to move ahead on both these fronts
research and promotion. We as producers can't just sit back and expect somebody else to do the job for us. It's our markets that hang in the balance, and our future that's at stake.

FARM COUNTRY! Georgia farmers' crop yields have increased significantly in recent years. This is particularly true where irrigation is used. Most Georgia soils are capable of producing just as high crop yields as any area of the United States
when water is not a limiting factor and if all recommended cultural practices are followed.

Farm Exports U.S. agricultural exports this year are expected to total $21.9 billion, a slight increase over the $21.7 billion in 1975, according to the Department of Agriculture.

Ag Department Serves Georgia
The Georgia Department of Agriculture serves farmers and consumers in many ways. One of these is through:
Laboratories
Food samples picked up in processing plants and retail stores are sent to Atlanta for chemical testing in Department laboratories to make sure they are clean, pure and wholesome and that labels accurately describe the contents of food containers.
