Americans Help
Build Country
The history of America has been shaped by the super-abundance of land and natural resources with which we have been blessed. When the colonies split away from Great Britain 200 years ago, the difficulties of establishing a new nation seemed enormous. But the opportunities were equally immense.
The expansion of territory that began with the Louisiana Purchase

The I millions it took to purchase Louisiana and Alaska, the millions paid to Spain for Florida and to Mexico for California and the American Southwest, all had to be raised at least in part through borrowing from the citizens. Until the Spanish-American War and World War One, most of this

country's borrowing was from the very rich because the denominations of Treasury securities were out of the reach of 99 percent of the population. Beginning in 1898, however, and more extensively during the First World War, the Treasury issued securities small enough to be purchased by persons with relatively small resources.
When Secretary of the Treasury Henry Morganthau Jr. decided to create a security to encourage saving in the mid-1930's, he made it a registered, non-marketable bond that grew in value at a fixed, graduated rate not dependent on market fluctuations. The resulting Series A Savings Bond, issued in 1935, could also be replaced if lost, stolen, mutilated, or destroyed. Denominations ranged from $25 to $1,000, with a purchase price of three-quarters of the face amount.
With the approach of World War Two, the Treasury decided to greatly expand its efforts to sell

A juicy, fresh apple, eaten outof-hand, makes a low calorie snack which provides quick energy and adds needed nutrients and fiber to the daily diet. A medium-sized apple contains
about 70 calories. It is usually more economical

Horses, mules, ponies
for sale

In order to qualify to advertise horses, horse farmers should have had the livestock advertised in their possession 60 days or more before offering it for sale through this publication.
People who are buying and breeding horses should ask to see the registration papers before leaving premises. The MARKET BULLETIN has received numerous complaints of people who buy a horse with the seller promising to send papers later and the papers never appear. The MARKET BULLETIN has no jurisdiction over such instances. A smart buyer and or person breeding a mare will ask to see the papers first.
On recommendation of the State Equine Board, at stud notices are published in the Farmers and Consumers Market Bulletin during the prime breeding season only, January through April.

9 Ofxutliae Cacti?

Mexican Dwarf Tree

Bunny Ears

Plants in the Opuntia family look

like real cactus and have such

common names like prickly pears,

bunny ears, angel wings, grizzly

bear and Mexican dwarf tree.

These cacti are native to all parts

of the Americas, from Canada to

Cape Horn.

Although it is this group of

cacti that has become a serious

pest in parts of the world, it is

also the most important

economically. Fruit of the prickly

pear is considered a delicacy

while the stems are eaten as a

green vegetable or used for cattle

fodder. And, before chemical dyes

were invented, acres of these

cacti were maintained to feed the

cochineal insect, the source of

red dye.

Several varieties of Opuntiae are

grown as novelty houseplants: 0.

microdasys (bunny ears, angel

wings) - flat, oblong, spineless

pads, covered with bright golden

tufts.

0. basilaris (beaver tail) - low,

spreading, broad spineless pads,

shaped like a beaver's tail.

0. erinacea (grizzly bear) -

thick hairy coat of white or

yellowish spines.

O. villis (Mexican dwarf tree) -

well adapted to dish gardens,

resembles a miniature Joshua

tree.

These are among the easiest

cacti to grow. They prefer poor

sandy soil, a warm sunny

location, and very moderate

watering. If they receive too much

shade or rich soil, the Opuntiaes

will lose their character and

produce long trailing branches.

Many of these species can take

temperatures well below zero if

kept- dry.

Georgia Artifacts

Newly-discovered missing pieces of Georgia folk art will be on display December 5 until February 28, 1977, at the Atlanta Historical Society. The exhibition, sponsored by the Georgia Council for the Arts, features approximately 100 pieces which will take their place alongside other celebrated works of American folk art.

I requested and received two pamphlets from your office some time ago that were JEWELS. One was about apple trees and the other was on peach trees. Not only was the care and maintenance explained from A to Z, but diseases and what to do for them was given also. Could I request these again as I have used mine up.
M. B., Atlanta
Woe is me. Just love to send these to you and about two million other folks. We have to completely agree as to the usefulness of these booklets. However, these were printed by the Cooperative Extension Service as are most of our pamphlets and are now out of print. They print a small foldover pamphlet, "Disease and Insect Control in The Home Orchard" but it's not as detailed. However,
we thought you might enjoy a copy of the latest they have "Construction, Maintenance, and Renovation of Football Fields11 ????
Nothing about your peach trees but sure does tell you what to do with an empty field. Like "can't have concentrated trampling, such
as band practice, as might hurt* g*ra*ss."

I need information on marketing grapes in quantity. C. F., Martinez
Contact the Georgia Muscadine Association, Aubrey Owen, Owen's Vineyard and Nursery, Gay 3021*8*. *

How long does it take a Peafowl egg to hatch? Also information

on laying.

Mrs. J. M., Ringgold

According to Cackles [bet you didn't know he was still around],

THE egg expert, Peafowl start to lay at two years and will lay,

starting hi May, from 2 to 20 eggs per season, until age 10 to 12

years. It takes 26 to 28 days incubation to hatch. It has been

found that incubating the eggs under a chicken-type hen works

best.

***

What is the enclosed plant and its uses? Someone said it was an herb and I would like to know what it will cure.
J. C., Tifton
Nothing. It is a relative of common sage grown for flowers. ***

Why does an ear of corn have an even number of row on it? H. L., Nahunta
You asked for it grasses have two ranked leaves. That is, the leaves, when viewed from the top of the plant, will appear to be in two rows. The florets are two ranked in the spikelets and the spikelets are two ranked or even ranked in plants that have a spike or spike-like inflorescence. An example of this even ranking is the 2, 4, or 6 rowed Barley. This even ranking extends to the
corn ear which is a highly modified flowering stem. However, this even ranking is somewhat confused hi the variety of Country Gentlemen Corn. The normally sterile floret at the base of the extra grams can obscure the normal even seed row pattern. Or so
"Ears" the corn and seed man said. ***

Can you identify the tree the enclosed leaves are from? It has a fruit very similar to a persimmon but not quite as large. The tree is in front of the hospital in Hawkinsville and we want to know
what it is. E. G., Pineview.
It is the female plant of a Ginkgo tree. The maturing fruits smell like rancid butter and as most folks don't like the smell, many
nurseries sell only male trees. T*h*e *Chinese use the fruits for food.

What is the exact temperature of water to scald turkeys? Also, how do I preserve onions after pulling up?
N. A., Williamson Approximately 138 degrees F. Take a pah- of old hose, drop one
onion into the foot of the hose, tie a knot, place another onion in
the leg, tie another knot, etc., until the pair is full. Then hang in a dry cool place. Wonder what we did before panty hose?
***

I am enclosing some leaves from what we have always called a Varnish tree. I understand it is the only one in this part of the country and now it is decaying and leaning on the power line going into the house. Can I root a branch or limb as I would like to have another tree. My father set this one out in 1924.
Mrs. J. A., Union Point
Sorry your Firminia simplex [Varnish, Phoenix, or Chinese Parasol] tree isn't doing well. It cannot be easily propogated from cuttings;
however, it should be easy to plant from seed. Pick the seeds when they fall when the tree is shaken or bumped. Start them
inside hi a box filled with a mixture of sand and peat moss, then transplant the seedlings hi the spring. The tree will probably
sprout if you must cut it down. If it is hi a good location. Leave a stump about 3 to 5 inches high, well mulched during the whiter,
and it should sprout next spring.

Americans Help
{Continued From Page 1)
Savings Bonds. On May 1, 1941, a new Series the E was issued, and called the Defense Bond. A large volunteer corps was recruited to promote these Bonds all across the country, and rudimentary Payroll Savings Plans were set up in some industries to enable workers to buy the Bonds easily, conveniently.
After December 7, 1941, the promotion and sale of the Series E Bond went into high gear. Hundreds of Hollywood stars joined many thousands of businessmen, bankers, labor leaders, and ordinary citizens in selling Bonds to millions of Americans. Thus began the tradition of volunteer involvement that has been the hallmark of the Bond Program ever since.
It is estimated that Georgia Bond purchasers now own Savings Bonds valued at $810 million. According to our latest figures, Georgians will place approximately $105 million in m Savings Bonds in 1976.
The Georgia Savings Bonds Office has a film library for providing program material to farm groups. These patriotic films would fit into your schedule with an excellent message. They are free of charge for your group.
