Georgia Pork

Producers Assn.

There's nothing very glamorous

about the hog business. Maybe

that's why so many people fail to

realize just how important the pork

industry is to Georgia agriculture

except bankers.

But in 1975, hogs produced a

cash income of $180 million. That

was better than a

lot of other com-

modities that we

hear so much ab-

out, like cotton, to-

| bacco, soybeans,

corn, dairying

and beef cattle.

And through

the efforts of the

Georgia Pork Pro-

ducers Association and our af-

filiation with the National Pork Pro-

ducers Council

we're try-

ing to make sure that our hog

Spooner, President, Georgia Pork Producers,

business continues to grow even stronger.
GPPA was organized hi 1973. It is strictly a voluntary group in that no one joins or participates in our checkoff program without wanting to.
Membership is open to any active Georgia pork producer. By joining, a producer also automatically becomes a member of the National Pork Producers Council.
Research has played a tremendous role in getting us where we are. And it will continue to do so. That's why we work closely with university researchers in determining problem areas.
For instance, GPPA is represented on the University of Georgia Vet School Advisory Board in order to make sure research funds are directed to projects dealing with critical problems.
The threat of government regulations affecting prices, taxes, feed additives, pesticides, animal health, exports and environment calls for constant legislative activity.
Through NPPC, we have highly regarded representation in Washington and input on important USDA committees.
Interest in the checkoff program by both producers and
markets has been increasing.

Ragweed?
Ragweed means sniff, gasp, cough, hack, choke and sneeze. In the beauty of the autumn, this little devil can bring the strongest
person to tears. Ambrosia ar-
temisiifolia is one of the most common garden weeds in America. Its highly allergenic pollen is responsible for much suffering am^rtg sinus and asthma victims.
If it makes you .-teel any better"*when you are wheezing and coughing, ragweed is an invaluable source
of food for wildlife. Its oil-rich seeds are the "staff of life" for many kinds of birds during cold wintry months.
But for you, the allergic sufferer, stay as far away from the weed as you can. Learn to recognize it for the devil it is. It has rough, hairy, purple branching stems v smooth deeply cut leaves with small flower heads and it is one to six feet tall.
Ragweed is an annual pest. It dies out every year but reseeds itself in abundance. The amount of pollen produced by each flower is unbelievable and what doesn't fall to the ground for next year's crop stays in the air to aggravate people with sensitive breathing apparatus.
As the commercial goes, "take your sinus to Arizona," this is about the only way to escape contamination. Ragweed is native and grows with abandon throughout the eastern half of the United States.

Horses, mules, ponies for sale
All horses offered for advertisement through the Market Bulletin should have a negative coggin test within the past 60 days.
On recommendation of the State Equine Board, at stud notices are published in the Farmers and Consumers Market Bulletin during the prime breeding season only, January through April.
People who are buying and breeding horses should ask to see the registration papers before leaving premises. The MARKET BULLETIN has received numerous complaints of people who buy a horse with the seller promising to send papers later and the papers never appear. The MARKET BULLETIN has no jurisdiction over such instances. A smart buyer and or person breeding a mare will ask to see the papers first.
In order to qualify to advertise horses, horse farmers should have had the livestock advertised in their possession 60 days or more before offering it for sale through this publication.
