4-H: Changing
With The Times
There's a saying among Georgia 4H members that "4-H ain't all cows and cookin'." Originating in 1905 as a Newton County Boy's Corn Club with 151 members, Georgia 4-H has grown to include 3,775 organized clubs and 303,754 projects and activities which are valued at approximately 10 million dollars.
With well over 164,282 members, Georgia 4-H can boast of being
one of the largest organized youth groups in the nation. Yes, 4-H is still cows and cooking, but it's
o.lao a-l\iexv,
rocketry, electronics, and ecology.
Bearing the image of a solely farm-oriented organization, the Georgia 4-H program is quite the contrary. Only
(Our guest columnist this week is Sue Parker, State 4-H President, P.O. Box 306, Tolbotton31827.) _____________
18% of Georgia 4-H club members actually live on farms, while 58% of its members live in rural, non-farm areas and 24% live in urban and suburban areas. There's nothing wrong with the farm-oriented image, but the Georgia 4-H program has expanded this image to include activities which youth from urban and suburban areas can identify with as well.
4-H is a youth development organization, and this encompasses all youth, whether from a farm or from a large city.
The goal of our Georgia 4-H program is to reach as many of these diversified youth as possible, and to interest them in some phase of our program. There's an old and familiar phrase which is the purpose of all 4-H programs everywhere, "The youth of today are the leaders of tomorrow". Accordingly, 4-H has been referred to as America's unique contribution to the field of education.
Through "learn by doing" projects, leadership and citizenship emphasis, and financial scholarships, the Georgia 4-H clubs, and all 4-H clubs, are truly educating the "leaders of tomorrow".
We are proud of our Georgia 4-H

New Sprayer System
Could Save Money
A new pesticide application
eyetem that coasts planta with
electrically charged droplets may cut U.S. pesticide consumption by one-half and save farmers up to $1 billion annually in pesticide costs, according to the University of Georgia research engineer who invented it.
Dr. S. Edward Law, associate professor of agricultural engineering, said the system could lead to significantly lower consumer food costs, and will also reduce air and water pollution by pesticides.
Law developed the system with support from the University of Georgia Agricultural Experiment Station and Cotton Incorporated.

Floriculture In Georgia

Continues To Expand

The floriculture industry in Georgia is composed of greenhouse growers of bedding plants, foliage plants, pot plants, and cut flowers; florist with their many retail shops throughout the state; and plant
and foliage retailers (this includes the foliage plant specialty shops, the discount store, lawn and garden centers, etc.)

Ms. Lillie Mae Balcolm, soap maker, will be one of the many participants at the Seventh Annual Brown's Crossing Craftsmen Fair, Route 2, Box 271 Milledgeville 31061, October 1617. Phone 912/452-9327.

How large is the industry in Georgia? There are over 800 greenhouse plant growers, over 1200 florist, and over 1000 plant retail outlets. Each of these businesses employ from 5 to 100 people who work and obtain their income directly from plant sales.
There is over 12,000,000 sq. ft. of greenhouse area in Georgia growing floricultural crops. The income from this segment is over $60 million. The 1200 florist will have an income of over $100 million. The 1000 plant retailers will have an income over $90
million. This adds up to over 250 million dollars and does not include any of the connected businesses that make and sell pots, soil mixes, or sell supplies and equipment. If the income generated in Georgia by these people were added up, it could easily be over another 25 to 50 million dollars.
Has the industry in Georgia grown as much as it is going to ? Less than five years ago there were less than 300 greenhouse operations in Georgia. This has
grown to over 800 and is still growing. Plants are still being
shipped into the state. Load after load of bedding plants are

Seventh Annual

Veteran sorghum eaters and novices as well, will have an opportunity to indulge their taste buds in the golden syrup the third weekend in October when the Blairsville Jaycees host their Seventh Annual Sorghum Festival, Oct. 15-17, in Blairsville.
If you want to see a mule grinding cane, watch that delicious sorghum syrup being made the old fashioned way, watch the unique biscuit and syrup sopping contest, or enter the exciting contests throughout the whole weekend, plan to come to Blairsville the third weekend of October.
There will be, of course, the traditional mountain festival activities such as a crosscut log sawing, pole climbing, rock throwing, moonshine still, blacksmith shop, [baccer] and snuff spitting contest, and many more.

Harvest Sale
The Seventh Annual Mountain Harvest Sale and Crafts Fair will be held October 16-17 and 23-24 at the State Farmers' Market in Blue Ridge. Dear Editor: First let me congratulate you on the article
entitled "Farm Estate Planning Vital to Prevent
Tragic Results" in the September 15, 1976 issue. I feel it is one of the finest short articles on the need for Estate Planning I have ever read. We certainly need more such information for all of our urban and rural community.
The Law states, "The legal right of a tax payer to decrease the amount of what otherwise would be his taxes, or altogether avoid them, by means which the law permits cannot be doubted"
[[Gregory Vs Helvering 293 US Tax Court 495]]. It is a pity, however,, that most of the urban and
rural community are so busy building an estate, they refuse to take the time necessary to protect what they are building by utilizing the ex perienced and knowledge of ANY member of the
Estate planning team. The booklet entitled "Estate Planning with a
Purpose" published by the University of Georgia Extension Service is very informative. This
booklet surely will not make the reader a dp it yourselfer in Estate planning, however, it might
move the tax payer to contact his Attorney, Bank Trust Officer or an Insurance Advisor to obtain more information.

P.S. In your illustration you have used the marital deduction as if it were automatic. It indeed is not, unless elected by the deceased and then only with a properly drawn will, and usually other related documents.

THE MARKET BULLETIN
Horses,
mules, ponies for sale
All horses offered for advertisement through the Market Bulletin should have a negative coggin test within the past 60 days.
On recommendation of the State Equine Board, at stud notices are published in the Farmers and Consumers Market Bulletin during the prime breeding season only. January through April.
People who are buying and breeding horses should ask to see the registration papers before leaving premises. The MARKET BULLETIN has received numerous complaints of people who buy a horse with the seller promising to send papers later and the papers never appear. The MARKET BULLETIN has no jurisdiction over such instances. A smart buyer and or person breeding a mare will ask to see the papers first.
In order to qualify to advertise horses, horse farmers should have had the livestock advertised in their possession 60 days or more before offering it for sale through this publication.

Elliott's Aster
Wild asters bloom chiefly in the late summer and early fall. The varied hues of purple, lavender and white are a familiar sight in Georgia along roadsides and dry pastures, but few folks realize that there are 75 species native to our area.
The family characteristics common to most include alternate simple leaves, and daisy-like flowers. Most flowers are about alternate simple leaves, and daisylike flowers. Most flowers are about 1/2 inch across and the plants are two to five feet tall.
Asters are native to our country and many have given rise to the hardy garden asters of Michaelmas-daisies. The wild varieties, though, are a joy to discover and a sight to behold in the fall.

Tree Seedlings

Still Available

There are 27,532,000 tree seedlings available for order by Georgia landowners.
In an effort to meet the needs of landowners, at the most economical method of production, the Forestry Commission will
enter a seedling growing contract for all orders of improved loblolly pine and improved slash pine of 400,000 trees and over.
Filling of orders not under contract, for 400,000 or more improved stock will depend on supply.
Improved "super" tree seedlings grown from certified seed, represent 87 percent of the Forestry Commission's 1976 seedling crop available for landowner purchase. The 24-million improved seedlings being grown brings to 220.7 million improved seedling stock made available to Georgia landowners since 1964. Another 11-million improved seedlings are being grown under
contract. Georgia's. Tree Improvement Program began in 1954.
Tree seedling application forms may be obtained from the Forestry Commission County Rangers, County Agents, Soil Conservation Service Technicians and Agricultural Conservation Program Officers. All orders must be submitted on a Georgia Forestry Commission application

Floriculture
(Continued From Page 1)

shipped in during the spring. Pot plants are shipped in during
Christmas and the holidays. Foliage plants are brought into

the state almost every day. As of now we do not produce all that
we can sell in Georgia so there is still plenty of room to grow.

Another reason why the

floriculture industry in Georgia is

just starting to grow is the

climate. With the ever increasing

fuel prices, Georgia's climate has

much more appeal than the

climate of Northern states. Georgia's weather is much milder

and there are fewer days which

require a lot of heating. With

less heating the cost of

production is reduced and

Georgia growers can compete very successfully with Northern

states. The average winter tem-

perature in Georgia runs from 30 degrees to 40 degrees F. while

states North of Georgia run from 20 degrees to 30 degrees F. or

lower during winter months. For

every 10 degrees F. drop in

temperature the heating cost almost doubles. Therefore, it cost
about half as much to heat greenhouses in Georgia as

compared to other Northern states.
Another reason why the Georgia floriculture industry

should continue growing is the

cost of land. There is much good

land still available in Georgia for

around $500 per acre. Compare this to over $2000 per anrs for the same kind of land in Florida.

Georgia also has an excellent

road network so that exporting

plants should not be a problem.

Labor is also plentiful for

greenhouse

work.

Most

greenhouse work can be done on a part-time basis. The greenhouse

industry thus employs many

people who could not work full

time.

Biggesf Pumpkin

Needed Oct. 12

Georgia needs to find the biggest pumpkin in the state by Oct. 12 to compete with Massachusetts' biggest pumpkin in Boston a few days later.
Anyone having a huge pumpkin in the field or who has just harvested a huge pumpkin is urged to call Chick Hosch, Georgia Department of Agriculture, 404/656-3690 or 656-3691 and give him a report.
It would be preferable to have a pumpkin still in the field but any pumpkin with a circumference of 65 to 70 inches and a weight of more than 100 pounds will be considered.
Georgia's entry in the "Big PUMPKIN" contest will be flown to Boston and presented in special ceremonies to the Governor, Commissioner of Agriculture and Mayor of that city on Oct. 15. It will need to be obtained not later
than Oct. 12. Come on you pumpkin growers
let us hear from you!!

4-H: Changing
(Continued From Page 1)
program, and rightfully so. It is not only one of the largest 4-H programs in the nation, but it is also one of the oldest and most active. In 1975-76, Georgia had 11 National winners and 3 Sectional winners at the National 4-H Congress held in Chicago, Illinois. Georgia enrolled 40,000 members in Special 4-H Expanded Nutrition Programs, and awarded deserving 4-H members $39,704 in college scholarships.
However, all of these could never have been accomplished without the dedicated support of our donors, who give unstingingly of themselves, their time, and their assets. The Georgia 4-H program is grateful to these generous business and industry, education, government, agriculture, and civic groups.
As Georgia 4-H'ers, we only hope that we can follow the path that 4-H has layed before us and develop into quality leaders and adults of tomorrow.
