FmHA Assists

Rural Counties

The Farmers Home Administration (FmHA) is the lending agency for the U. S. Department of Agriculture. Our mission is to provide financial assistance to families and community groups unable to obtain assistance from commercial lending institutions. All applications are considered regardless of sex, race, color, creed, or national origin of the applicant.

Many lending programs have

been added through the years for the

purpose of help-

ing people im-

prove the quality

of life in rural

America, the most

significant being

the Rural

Development Act

which was signed

\

into law August

30, 1972. Senator

Talmadge deserves much of the

credit for the passage of this Act

which gave us expanded loan

authorities to our community

programs, rural housing, and farmer programs, also it created the Business & Industry Loan; operating loans to 4-H Clubs, FFA, and Homemakers of America to undertake Club Projects; and to farmers and ranchers for purchase of additional equipment and livestock.
Since the implementation of the Rural Development Act in August 1973, the Georgia State Office has made a total of 11,863 loans, amounting to $281,552,061.
Farmers Home Administration is a decentralized agency, with 42 State Offices covering all 50 States plus Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands. All rural counties are served from over 1,700 county offices. Information on all loans is available at the FmHA office serving the county in which the farm, home, or community is located.
The address of the Georgia State Office is 355 East Hancock Avenue, Athens, Georgia 30601; Telephone Number 546-2162.

Aerial Flights Stop
On Fire Ant Fight
Aerial operations to eradicate fire ant infestations hi Georgia have been temporarily suspended due to a lack of Mirex fire ant bait.
What bait is available will be used for hand treatments.
The sole source of Mirex fire ant bait is a plant formerly operated by Allied Chemical Company in Aberdeen, Miss. The State of Mississippi purchased the plant earlier this year but has now suspended production due to an inability to obtain chemical Mirex from Hooker Chemical Company, the manufacturer.
Some 1,600,000 acres were treated in Georgia earlier this summer following Mississippi's purchase of the manufacturing facility.
Officials could not estimate when chemical Mirex might become available for the production of additional bait.
lilburit Festival
The Third Annual Lilburn Arts and Crafts Festival will be held Saturday, October 9 at the new K-Mart on Highway 29 and Beaver Ruin Road from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Interested artists, craftsman, garden clubs, school clubs and others are invited to participate.
Microwave Cook-Off
Mrs. King won with "Stuffed Vidalia Onions", using Georgia's favorite sweet onions.
Other winners were Mrs. Robert Shipp, Macon; Mrs. Kenneth Riddle, Rome; Mrs. Juanita Bachelor, Athens; Mrs. Howard Greer, Jackson; and Mrs. Lee Nelson, Jackson.
The contest was open to the residents of Georgia and will be held again next year.
Day In The Country
An old-fashioned "Day In The Country" will be held October 2 and 3 on a wooded lake-site in North Fulton County.
Drivers should follow Highway 140 or Georgia Highway 372 to the Birmingham Community, where signs will lead to the festival site.
For further information call Ben Statham, 321-6807.

Ga. Receives Federal Funds

For Brucellosis Eradication

Georgia will receive a special allocation of $2,200,000 in federal

funds to initiate a crash program for the eradication of brucellosis

disease in cattle, according to Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy

Irvin.

Often called "Bang's" disease,

involved. It will consist of testing all cattle in counties known to be

heavily infected and herds having

known contact with infected

cattle.

Rabbit tobacco is a troublesome weed for gardeners and young daredevils anxious to have their first puff. In simplier days, smoking rabbit tobacco was one
of the most adventurous and daring ways to get into mischief. Barns and garages provided the perfect setting for sneaking out back, meeting a few friends, and "rolling your /. ' own".
Rabbit tobacco (Gnaphalium obtusifolium) goes by several common names such as cudweed, catfoot and sweet everlasting, the latter being indicative of its single redeeming quality. It is a beautiful dried arrangement specimen. The small-flower heads that never quite open, the woolly foliage with a slight lemon scent and its height (about three feet) make it desirable for collection now.

Quarantines Once the disease is detected in a herd, all of the animals hi the herd are quarantined and tested individually. Those which react are sent to slaughter, and since the disease is concentrated primarily in the reproductive organs, the meat may be sold for public? consumption without ill effects. The Commissioner said the disease is most prevalent in counties bordering Florida, Alabama and Tennessee. He said all counties on the South Carolina line are virtually free of "bang's" because S.C. has been declared a certified free state.
Costly Disease Brucellosis is considered one of the most costly farm animal diseases, in that infected cattle often abort, are slow breeders and can become sterile.
"The technology is available to wipe out brucellosis once and for all," Irvin said, "and I am extremely pleased that the federal government has selected Georgia as one of two states for a pilot program to show what can be achieved with determination and adequate funding," the Commissioner continued.

Dear Editor: After cleaning your oven, the oven cleaner
leaves an awful odor. Just put one or two slices of bread on the rack [I use ends]. Turn the oven to 350 and let the bread get real brown, almost burned. Turn the oven off. Leave bread in and there is no trace of oven cleaner odor.

Horses,
mules, ponies
for sale
AH horses offered for advertisement through the Market Bulletin should have a negative coggin test within the past 60 days.
On recommendation of the State Equine Board, at stud notices are published in the Farmers and Consumers Market Bulletin during the prime breeding season only, January through April.
People who are buying and breeding horses should ask to see the registration papers before leaving premises. The MARKET BULLETIN has received numerous complaints of people who buy a horse with the seller promising to send papers later and the papers never appear. The MARKET BULLETIN has no jurisdiction over such instances. A smart buyer and or person breeding a mare will ask to see the papers first.
In order to qualify to advertise horses, horse farmers should have had the livestock advertised in their possession 60 days or more before offering it for sale through this publication.
