Fire Ant Program
Needs To Continue
It is indeed unfortunate that the fire ant was ever allowed to sneak into and get hold in this country. Its sting has left its mark on many a victim physically and economically. Many reactions and several deaths have occured due to the fiery bite.
Last year alone, it is estimated that Georgia farmers and landown-
ers lost over twenty three million dollars because of fire ant infestation.
Since the beginning, the program to control and eradicate the ant has been beset with problems both financial and environmental that are too numerous to relate.
As Commissioner of Agriculture and as a citizen I am concerned about our environment. I do not want to see our world, nation or state polluted in any way that can be prevented. We should all strive to make this a better place for our children and future generations to live.
The problem lies in how best to accomplish this endeavor. Certainly not by allowing a dangerous and destructive pest like the fire ant to spread, causing even more illnesses, deaths, destruction of food crops, and land, and killing young cattle and other animals. Feeding this world and our future generations is also a major problem and one of my concerns.
There are those who say that Mirex (the only effective means we now have for controlling and eradicating the fire ant) is dangerous to the environment and should be phased out. I am strongly opposed to this proposal, which originated with the Commissioner from Mississippi, until a substitute or alternate material can be found to control the imported ant.
I have written Russell Train, Administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency in Washington, advising him of my interest in the development of a more environmentally acceptable material to replace Mirex, BUT urging that the use of Mirex be continued until

Dear Editor: I was surprised at your answer to "Letters to
the Editor" September 1, reference to watering a garden.
Your recommendation was "cool of evening." Most other recommendations I have read suggest watering early enough so foliage can dry and not cause extensive fungus damage.
Your statement "water...acts like a mirror: means that the sun rays are reflected and reduces heat to plant. A proper statement is water drops may act like a lense and focus sun rays causing heat damage.
Most people that irrigate apply water day and night until sufficient water is absorbed in the soil deep within the root zone.
Col. Hampton Rowland, Jr. Bar M Ranch Route 2 Boston, Georgia 31626

Dear Editor: In the September 1 issue of the MARKET
BULLETIN a person asked, "When is the best time to water the garden?" Your reply to this
question has some good points, but is contrary to Extension recommendations. We recommend
that the garden be watered early enough to allow all foliage to become dry before night. This goes a long way in preventing foliage diseases.
I just wanted to make the above point since several Extension people have asked if our recommendations have changed. At this time, they have not.
Paul Colditz
Extension Horticulturist Blairsville, Georgia 30512 (Editor's note: Now we don't know who wins the
argument! However, although we were quoting from WYMAN'S GARDENING ENCYCLOPEDIA, it is this Department's policy to follow Extension recommenda-
tions on such matters and therefore we and WYMAN'S stand corrected.)

Dear Editor: J want to practice sign language with man who
is deaf or hard of hearing. If any of your readers can help me, please have them oil.

Horses,
mules, ponies for sale
All horses offered for advertisement through the Market Bulletin should have a negative coggin test within the past 60 days.
On recommendation of the State Equine Board, at stud notices are published in the Farmers and Consumers Market Bulletin during the prime breeding season only, January through April.
People who are buying and breeding horses should ask to see the registration papers before leaving premises. The MARKET BULLETIN has received numerous complaints of people who buy a horse with the seller promising to send papers later and the papers never appear. The MARKET BULLETIN has no jurisdiction over such instances. A smart buyer and or person breeding a mare will ask to see the papers first.
In order to qualify to advertise horses, horse farmers should have had the livestock advertised in their possession 60 days or more before offering it for sale through this publication.

Food Label
Value Rated
Slightly over 50 percent of shoppers find nutritional information on food product labels very useful but 20-25 percent think such information may be of little or no use, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
In a recent survey of over 1,400 shoppers throughout the United States, by the Department's Economic Research Service, shoppers were asked to rate the usefulness of nine types of label information.
Survey results show that 90 percent of the shoppers believe prices and freshness or open dates on food packages are very useful. Less than 5 percent regard them as of little or no use.
Uniform names and descriptions of meat cuts in all stores are considered to be very useful by 70 percent of the shoppers; while 15 percent give the opposite opinion.
Slightly fewer shoppers believe ingredients information and storage instructions are very useful. About 65 percent believe they are, while 15 percent regard the information as not too useful.
Name of the food manufacturer, nutrition information, and unit pricing are three items that only slightly over half the shoppers beleive to be very useful. Between 20 and 25 percent think they are of little or no use.
Drained weight information on foods packed in liquids is regarded as very useful by only 30 percent of shoppers. Almost 50 percent believe it would be of little or no use.
These are early results from a study currently underway by the Economic Research Service,

Ag Facts

It's an ag-fact. Soybeans, which were used as food in the Orient as early as 2838 B.C., didn't really catch on as a U.S. farm product until World War II brought on a sharp increase in the demand for margarine, derived mainly from soybean oil. Now, it's the third largest crop, with nearly 1 1/2 billion bushels harvested in 1975.
It's an ag-fact. When we talk about farm exports, we usually refer to the major items, such as wheat, corn or soybeans. Actually, the U.S. exports more than'500 different farm products, including ginseng (medicinal plant) to Hong King, licorice extract to Denmark, beef liver and tongue to France and feather meal to Japan.

It's an ag-fact. The task of feeding and clothing the U.S. population requires at least 30 times more land than the amount needed for all the housing in cities, towns and suburbs throughout the nation.
It's an ag-fact. If the price of bread had increased during the past few years proportionately as much as fuel or fertilizer two basic raw materials of the farmer a loaf would cost from $1.37 to $1.68 today.
It's an ag-fact. It costs more in labor to move a loaf of bread from the bakery to the grocery store than the farmer receives for the wheat that goes into the bread.

Fire Ant Program
(Continued From Page 1)
such time as an alternate material can be found.
I have personally discussed my opposition to his proposal with the Commissioner from Mississippi and have contacted the heads of other agriculture departments in all other effected states in the belief they should be involved in any final decision concerning the use of Mirex.
We cannot afford further delay and more millions lost in our fight against the fire ant. We must be able to continue without interruption or the fire ant will spread and cause even more damage than the 23 million lost last year in Georgia.
We now follow a stringent set of guidelines which provides for the safest possible method of applying Mirex with as little side effect as feasible. These safeguards are closely monitored by the EPA.
I urge Train and the Environmental Protection Agency to allow the continued use of Mirex until an acceptable alternative is approved under monitoring or until there is undeniable evidence that detrimental affects on the environment outweigh the benefits in controlling and eradicating the imported fire ant with Mirex.
Great Pumpkin
(Continued From Page 1)
able to come up with a pumpkin well over 100 Ibs. by October 20, the day the Georgia entry will have to be weighed and flown to Boston.
Anyone having large pumpkins in the field is urged not to harvest them now but to mark them as possible entries in the Georgia-Massachusetts contest.
Beginning October 1, we want to hear from anyone having a large attractive pumpkin suitable for a big jack-o-lantern. You are urged to contact Chick Hosch, State Department of Agriculture, Capitol Square, Atlanta, 30334. Phone collect area 404, 656-3690.
Pumpkins that may qualify for the contest should not be harvested now. Once harvested, they begin to shrink and it is desired that the Georgia entry be as heavy as possible when it reaches Massachusetts just before Halloween.
Gold Rush Days
Mountain Crafts
Gold Rush Days of Dahlonega will be held October 15-17. Many mountain crafts and contests will be featured including tobacco spitting, lying, hog calling, crosscut sawing and wheelbarrowing. Clogging and buck dancing will be featured.
The Fourth Annual All Southern Wrist Wrestling Championship will be held. Gold Rush Days are sponsored by the Dahlonega-Lumpkin C >unty Jaycees.
BIG EATERS How much food do yo^ eat? This may surprise you, but the average person consumes about three-fourths ton per year.

Poultry Club
Holds 1st Show
The Etowah Show Bird Club will hold its first Annual Fall Open Poultry Show on October 2d and 3d at the American Legion Fairground in Canton, Georgia.
The show is expected to be a large one with more than 1,200 birds representing many breeds and varieties of fancy poultry.
Trophies, cash, rosettes, and ribbons through fourth place will be awarded.
There is an entry fee of .75 cents per bird, and exhibitors may obtain entry forms from the Club's Secretary, Lorene Lee, Rt. 2, Gumming, Georgia 30130.
There is no charge for spectators and visitors. The many beautiful purebred fowl bred and shown by poultry fanciers from Georgia and neighboring states should be of interest to all who are interested in poultry.
Pecan Production
Down In Georgia
Pecan production in Georgia is forecast at 50 million pounds this year, according to the Georgia Crop Reporting Service. The current forecast is 33 percent below last year's "on-year" production of 75 million. Comments from pecan producers indicate that dry weather and a light Stuart set are mostly responsible for the smaller crop this year.
The current crop is of good quality, however, comments indicate that the nuts will be smaller in size. The crop will be the smallest crop in Georgia since 1972 when 48 million pounds were harvested.
Gold Leaf
(Continued From Page 1)
amounted to 123,753,795 pounds for $136,624,162 averaging $110.42 per 100 pounds.
Most grade averages increased eight to 14 dollars per hundred compared to the 1975 crop. Primings, however, gained only five to seven dollars with more priming grades going into the stabilization loan program than from all the other grades combined. The top average was $126 paid for choice orange leaf with $122 being the practical top paid for most of the better leaf grades.
More tobacco graded fair and good this year with a corresponding drop in poor and low qualities. The ratio of primings increased this year over 1975.
Flue-cured stabilization receipts this year totaled 24,874,541 pounds, down 4.7 million pounds from a year ago. The Cooperative received 15.3 percent of 1976 sales.
Commissioner Irvin commended the growers for producing such an excellent quality crop of fluecured tobacco this year in spite of one of the most adverse years weather wise in the history of Georgia tobacco production.

Grass Carp
(Continued From Page 1)
known as the white amur, eat many troublesome aquatic plants, they also eat any other available vegetation, vegetation that is necessary to curb erosion in ponds and shallow lakes. This also results in increased turbidity or mudiness of the water because the bottom of the pond is continuously agitated.
With its affinity for all aquatic vegetation, the grass carp competes with young game fish and fingerlings for food. It is tolerant of salt and brackish water meaning that the carp could survive in the brackish-water marshes which serve as nursery areas for shrimp, crabs, and marine fishes.
The grass carp is being sold by out-of-state firms as an aid to control pond weeds, as a new sport fish and as a food fish. According to advertisements, the grass carp can not breed in North American waters but there is no known reason for the fish not to spawn in any of Georgia's major rivers. Spawning has, in fact, been documented outside of its natural Asian habitat.
Fisheries scientists are concerned that a wild, uncontrolled population of exotic species would degrade the habitat for native species in much the same way as did the German carp - an exotic introduced in the 1880's.
Research by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is underway to determine if the grass carp has value in weed control management. Until this research is completed, however, it is against the law to possess, buy or sell grass carp without a permit from the Georgia Department of Natural
Resources. If anyone has grass carp in a
private pond, he should contact the Department of Natural Resources Fisheries Management at 270 Washington Street., SW., Atlanta 30334 or phone 656-3524. Pond owners will be assisted in removal of grass carp from their ponds and provided with native fish for restocking on a firstcome, first-serve basis.

Transport Auger
(Continued From Page 12]
the others mentioned so far occurs down at the business end where the auger pulls grain into the grain tube. It can be extremely devastating to hands of feet unless the guard is kept in place and in good condition.
Transport augers are dangerous and should be treated with respect by experienced adults and avoided altogether by children or minors. Children are sometimes tempted to crawl down into grain tanks which are being unloaded by an auger. The funneling grain seems to captivate their curiosity and once someone is caught in the stream of the funneling grain and mires above the knees, escape is almost impossible without outside assistance, even for an adult. Being caught in this situation can lead to grain drowning. A person caught in this situation can not usually yell for help due to the equipment noise.
Be careful this season and don't reap a catastrophe.

Georgia Garden Clubs, in recent competition, received more awards from the National Council of Garden Clubs than entrants from any other state.
Among Georgia's 22 awards, were all ten of the noncompetitive flower show awards and the gold seal for advancement of national or world-wide significance. This seal went to Dr. Eugene Odum of the University. Dr. Odum is recognized as the founder of modern ecology.
The state publication Garden Gateways, was acclaimed winner among publications in its category for the fourth time in seven years. The Georgia Garden Club Guide, a yearbook, was also recognized.

Grass carp can become quite large if not controlled as shown here. This grass carp is stretched across a boat trailer to show size.

The pitcher plant is another one of those mysteries of nature that catches its prey, and digests it without any help from human hand. Although its prey is only tiny insects, it is still considered a carnivorous plant.
The pitcher plant has hollow leaves with a wing down one side and a lid-like hood on top. The leaves contain a watery fluid in which the insects drown and are digested.
There are several varieties of pitcher plant but they all bear the definable characteristics associated with the family. Sometimes the plants are called huntsmans-cap or sidesaddle-flower but they are all pitcher plants.
All bear flowers, some purple some yellow, some purplish-red. The plants can often be seen in bloom from the roadside but usually they are found only in boggy areas.
Georgia seems to have just the right growing conditions for pitcher plants because the purple, parrot, hooded, sweet, and trumpet pitcher plants are all native to our state.

It's a handy gadget which can save a lot of effort if used properly or lead to some serious accidents if used thoughtlessly. All of these conveyors have a power source which might be an electric motor, a small gasoline engine, or a PTO hook-up. All of these drives are capable of mangling hands, fingers, etc., unless proper guarding is always in place.
Electric motors create one other threat, if not properly grounded. The entire metal assembly can become charged if a malfunction occurs and proper grounding isn't provided. Such charged assemblies are often difficult to turn loose of if
touched by man or beast. Don't forget overhead power
lines which are usually leading to fans and dryers on and around grain handling centers. There have been several fatalities in recent years from transport augers being moved in the raised position and being pushed into overhead power lines. The auger acts as a lightning rod in this
case. Moving these augers in the
raised position is hazardous other than from overhead power lines in that they are unstable due to their high center of gravity. One wheel rolling over an object or falling into even a small depression can tip the auger over.
More often than not, these augers are tipped by wind blowing against them after they have been placed into position for filling a grain tank or to fill a dryer. They should always be secured to prevent tipping while in use and always lowered to a safe position when not in use.
A transport auger is usually demolished if tipping occurs more importantly, it can crush man or beast with little or no warning.
Another nip point which has lead to more accidents than all
