Cattle Dealer Farmers Attend Pesticide School;

Research Projects
Vary At Station
The Northwest Georgia Branch Experiment Station is located near the center of the Limestone Valley and upland area of Georgia. It is the second largest branch station in the state with a total land area of 1,264 acres. Approximately 1,000 acres are in cultivation.
The original unit at Calhoun serves as headquarters and is the lo-
cation of the most of the agronomic research plots. The 900 acre tract in Floyd County is used largely for livestock research w and the produc1 tion of grain and forage crops which support the livestock projects. Much interest in recent years has been in the area of minimum tillage

and no-til double cropping. Research is under way to develop a complete program, including varieties, planting dates, herbicides, fertilizers and cropping combinations. Included are small grains for grain and silage, soybeans, corn for grain and silage and sorghum for grain and silage.
A crossbreeding project designed to evaluate heterosis or hybrid vigor of Charolais X Angus cattle has attracted attention from a wide area. The 1970 International Grand Champion steer, U.G. Prototype, was a product of this research project.
Another beef cattle project was initiated in 1975 involving the growing and finishing of steers utilizing "home grown" silages and grains, with alfalfa and/ or roasted and rolled soybeans as the protein sources. Wheat, corn and sorghum are used for silage and grain sources. These cattle are fed for a predetermined rate of gain of one, two and three pounds per day. They are weighed at fourteen day intervals and feed adjustments are made based on weight gains.
The beef bull evaluation project continues to be one of the most

Taken To Court
A Georgia cattle dealer has been taken to Federal Court in North Carolina and required to pay $70,000 in damages for selling cattle infected with brucellosis to a North Carolina dairyman.
Although the dairyman was paid indemnities after the livestock was destroyed to prevent the spread of brucellosis, the court awarded him the $70,000 on the basis that indemnities did not cover the full loss and that the Georgia dealer had "breached an implied warranty by selling to a dairyman cattle which were not suitable for dairying purposes."
Six Georgias
Receive Awards
Six members of the Georgia Cooperative Exte'nsion Service staff received Distinguished Service Awards.
They are: James A. Christian, Athens; John Baughman, Jr., Snellville; James Maxey, Irwinton; Otho L. Butler, Gainesville; William Craven, Jr., Waynesboro, and T. E. Wheeler, Bainbridge.
Only two percent of the more than 5,000 NACAA members receive the annual award.

Certification Required By Oct. 1

Many Georgia farmers will be going to school this fall seeking certification that will enable them to purchase and use the restricted-use
pesticides they need to grow their crops.

intin', Pumpkin Show
Has Chiltfrens' Contest
The 13th Annual Paintin' and Pumpkin Arts, Crafts and Flea Market Show will be held at the Atlanta State Farmers Market in Forest Park on October 2nd and 3rd. An exciting feature of this year's show will include children's competition for decorated and carved pumpkins which will be judged on an individual and group basis and includes 1st, 2nd, and 3rd, place ribbons in all categories and a $25.00 savings bond for the best of show in each of the three categories.
4-H, F.F.A., F.H.A., church, school and civic children's organizations are invited to compete.
For further information about entering the show or competition contact Tina Picard, P.O. Box 314, Forest Park, Ga. 30050.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Georgia Department of Agriculture, due to federal legislation, will require farmer certification by October 21, 1977.
Burton R. Evans, specialist entomologist - pesticide applicator training, University of Georgia Cooperative Extension Service, said EPA has not yet defined what pesticides will be restricted. The list likely will include materials that are highly toxic to man or the environment.
Evans said farmers may become certified by attending a training course offered by the Extension Service. He added that there is no cost for the training or the certification.
"We believe the training offered by Extension will be very beneficial to farmers," Evans said. He pointed out that federal legislation has required the State Department of Agriculture to undertake the certification program, and added that "Georgia is fortunate to have the close cooperation between Extension and the Agriculture Department that made the training program possible."
To test the program, 14 county Extension agents conducted the two and one-half hour course for farmers in their counties in March and April of this year.

Prices climbed higher on the Georgia flue-cured tobacco market as sales finished the sixth week [August 13] with an average price of $1.18 per pound being paid. Last year's highest average week brought only $1.11 per pound to Georgia producers. Vohimn sales, however, were beginning to delcine indicating less tobacco will be sold this year than in 1975. As of August 19, the Georgia-Florida flue-cured markets roughly sold 130,000,000 pounds of tobacco for an
average price of $108.50 per cwt.

The training included understanding pesticide labels and formulations, safety and first aid procedures, methods of application, environmental hazards, recognition of pests, and pesticide laws and regulations.
Evans said evaluations from farmers and agents ranged generally from "favorable" to "enthusiastic."
The Extension Service,, through its network of county agents, will conduct the training statewide this fall. Evans said farmers should check with their local Extension offices for dates, times, and places of the training in their area.

Scotck Blown?
For hundreds of years, scotch broom has been grown in kitchen
gardens, as a plant necessary for
household maintenance. A few
branches securely tied to a
handle, ends chopped off for
evenness and presto - a broom! Scotch broom is an Old World
plant and comes to this country by way of central and southern
Europe. It has, however, naturaliz-
ed and can be found growing with
abandon in most parts of this
country.
Cytisus scoparius is an evergreen plant of about six feet. One
of its most unusual characteristics
is the absence of leaves on the
tall green stems. In late spring,
however, these stems burst forth with bright yellow flowers. The
fresh seed pods are poisonous bul
the flower buds, if pickled, are supposed to be some kind of
delicacy. The roasted seeds have
even been used as a coffee sub-
stitute in a pinch. Valera Jessee

popular programs at the station and the sixth test year was completed in March of this year. The test facility was enlarged in 1973 to accommodate increased demands for testing by breeders.
Research at the NW Georgia Branch Station is part of a statewide program conducted by research scientists of the College of Agriculture, University of Georgia, to advance agriculture in the state. Various educational programs are held during the year in cooperation with the University of Georgia Extension Service and other organizations to report research results to interested visitors. Results are also disseminated through various publications.
