. Homemakers
Council Helps
Greetings from the 3,575 homemakers from all corners of this great state of our's. This bicentennial year has been a challenging one. Our homemakers have dusted things from the attic; read, studied and researched to restore much of our natural heritage. We have participated in bazaars, flea markets, festivals, and other ways to raise funds to restore small towns to their original "flavor".
One homemaker made a Betsy Ross Flag. Many costumes were
made and worn on many occasions. A float was made p by one club for July 4th Parade.
Many bicentennial quilts turned up in displays and fairs. Arts and crafts from early days were exciting. Yes, I've been making lye soap. Our Georgian Heritage is indeed worthy of honoring. Fasting and prayer in one city bespoke their pride while their faith pointed to a future to mold. We concentrated on Health as our main project. Our very active
(Our guest columnist this week is Mrs. Mary Ellen Hartley, President, Georgia Homemakers Council, 121 Berkley Rd., Avondole Estates 30002.) ___________
Health Chairman has made many clubs and schools aware of CPR (Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation)
and her goal is to have one trained instructor in each school of each county. Money was raised for a muchly needed suction machine for the cancer center; desserts were sold at a Bar-B-Cue by one county that raised $2,000 for their cancer chapter.
Homemakers have driven patients for treatment, worked in blood mobiles, first-aid in schools, made cancer pads, filled kits, made bed caddies, lap throws, sponsored many educational programs, become foster parents for retarded children, participated in breast check program, helped purchase a secondhand wheel chair for a patient, collected items for a token store in a retardation center, plus many other worthwhile endeavors.

Mrs. Kay VanOrsdal of Fannin County was named Grand Prize winner in the Cotton Creations for the Home Contest held recently in Athens. She won first place with her Colonial Girl quilt.

Warehouse Fire
Destroys Tobacco
Farmers who lost an estimated $750,000 worth of tobacco in the "Big Z" and "Planters" warehouses in Blackshear last Wednesday night due to fire, are adequately covered by insurance under state law, according to Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin.
Farmers who lost tobacco in the fire should hold on to their floor sheets as proof of having had tobacco in the warehouses at the time of the fire.
All farmers having tobacco designated for future sales on the "Big Z" and "Planters" warehouses can re-designate their tobacco immediately and are urged to contact their local A.S.C.S. offices.
Tree Seedlings
NOW Available
There are 27,532,000 tree seedlings available for order by Georgia landowners.
In an effort to meet the needs of landowners, at the most economical method of production, the Forestry Commission will enter a seedling growing contract for all orders of improved loblolly pine and improved slash pine of 400,000 trees and over. The filling of orders, not under contract, for 400,000 or more improved stock will depend on supply.
Early submission of orders is encouraged as all orders received prior to the first of October will be filled depending on supply. If the orders exceed the supply, the trees will be prorated between orders. Orders received after the first of October will be filled on a first come, first serve basis.
Tree seedling application forms may be obtained from the Forestry Commission County Rangers, County Agents, Soil Conservation Service Technicians and Agricultural Conservation Program Officers. All orders must be submitted on a Georgia Forestry Commission application form.
Mail the completed application to the Georgia Forestry Commission, P. 0. Box 819, Macon, Georgia 31202.
For assistance in determining your reforestation needs, contact your local county forest ranger.

Horses, mules, ponies
for sale
People who are buying and breeding horses should ask to see the registration papers before leaving premises. The MARKET BULLETIN has received numerous complaints of people who buy a horse with the seller promising to send papers later and the papers never appear. The MARKET BULLETIN has no jurisdiction over such instances. A smart buyer and or person breeding a mare will ask to see the papers first.
In order to qualify to advertise horses, horse farmers should have had the livestock advertised in their possession 60 days or more before offering it for sale through this publication.
AH horses offered for advertisement through the Market Bulletin should have a negative coggin test within the past 60 days.
On recommendation of the State Equine Board, at stud notices are published in the Farmers and Consumers Market Bulletin during the prime breeding season only, January through April.

Ga. Homemakers
The Devil's Walking Stick, also known as Hercules Club, Angelica Tree and Aralia spinosa, is a spiny tropical looking small tree of about 15 feet. It's most distinguishing characteristic is the sharp prickles on the main stalk which is usually no more than 3/4 of an inch in diameter.
Chicken Facts
Although chicken livers are widely recognized as a valuable source of iron in the diet, it is not as generally known that they also exceed the amount of Vita min A necessary for good nutri tion. The National Broiler Council notes that a four ounce serving of chicken livers contributes 274.5 per cent of the recommended daily allowance (RDA) of Vitamin A.
Most every Georgian is familiar with this specimen of native plant life because it grows throughout our state. It is not selective of growing conditions and can be found in any soil, in full sun woods, or along stream banks.
The Devil's Walking Stick is in flower from June to September with small white flowers in numerous clusters. In the fall, egg-shaped black berries will attract wild birds and consequently spread the seed for more plants.
Although the plant is of no commercial value, some herbalists have used the bark to make a tonic. Others have reported, however, that handling the bark and roots will produce a relatively severe case of dermatitis.

Other projects included planting Liberty trees at new schools and churches. Some homemakers are Organ and Blood Donors. Clubs par ticipated in the Thor Program presented by the police department and using their engraving tool, marked their valuables. Programs on Safety, Food and Drugs, Botulism, Self Help for Women were most helpful and informative.
Nursing Homes were visited, remembering birthdays of the elderly. Forgotten patients in two institutions are remembered monthly. Children in orphanages are not forgotten by some clubs. Our State Council provides two 4H scholarships to deserving young men or women.
This is a little insight into busy homemakers schedules but we are very proud to be Georgia Pomemakers.
