THE FARM FAMILY
More than two hundred years ago our forefathers settled this land and set about the awesome task of feeding and clothing their families on unfamiliar soil with meager supplies and tools. Through their friendship with the Indians, their industriousness and their efficiency, these men and women made Georgia into one of the greatest agricultural states in
the nation.
Nationwide, nine out of every ten people were farmers in 1776. They had to be. The first task of feeding and clothing had to be met before other professions could be undertaken. It was
through our farmers efficiency that other men were freed from the land to become doctors, lawyers, statemen, cobblers, etc.
The Indian tribes in Georgia played an important part in our beginning that is in evidence today. Almost sixty percent
of the crops we produce today are Indian-domesticated plants.
By 1776 Georgians knew that this state and nation could be independent. Our forefathers had proved that Americans had the stamina and ability to stand alone ... and to stand tall. Confident in this knowledge, Georgia was the fourth
state to ratify the Constitution and is so represented by the fourth star on the original thirteen star flag and on today's fifty star flag.
Progress in some areas of our country's growth seems to have slowed. But never in agriculture. Today, the Georgia Department of Agriculture, the staff of the -Farmer's and Consumers Market Bulletin and Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin salute our farmers of yesterday and today as we celebrate our 200th Independence Day, July Fourth, 1976.

} Dear Editor:
j I am writing you in regard to a letter published
I in the BULLETIN requesting information as to the
{ family who had been receiving the MARKET
IX BULLETIN for the longest period of time.
I was a member of the Pig and Corn Club in
{ 1913. In 1915 I was a member of the Georgia Pig
I Club and won first prize on my pig in Franklin
Co., Lavonia, Ga. and was also a winner at the
Southeastern Fair in Atlanta. In 1916 I was a
winner in Franklin Co. and also the Southeastern
Fair.
I have a clipping from The Progressive Farmer
about my winning in the Pig Club in 1913; I was
never beaten in this Pig Club. I raised the Big
Type Black Poland China Hogs. In 1916 the pig
weighed 400 Ibs. at 6 months of age.
At the time my county agent was Mr. C. A.
Bryant. I believe the Commissioner of Agriculture
was Hon. J. J. Brown.
My county agent told me that the Agriculture
Department was going to publish a paper called
the Georgia Market Bulletin and would send a
copy of this paper to any member of the dif-
ferent clubs if they would write for it. I wrote for
this paper which I believe was first published in
January 1917 and have been receiving it ever
since. I was 17 years old at that time and I am
now 77 years of age. I believe I am one of the
oldest taking this paper and for the longest
period of time.

Horses,
mules, ponies
for sale
People who are buying and breeding horses should ask to see the registration papers before leaving premises. The MARKET BULLETIN has received numerous complaints of people who buy a horse with the seller promising to send papers later and the papers never appear. The MARKET BULLETIN has no jurisdiction over such instances. A smart buyer and or person breeding a mare will ask to see the papers first.
In order to qualify to advertise horses, horse farmers should have had the livestock advertised in their possession 60 days or more before offering it for sale through this publication.
All horses offered for advertisement through the Market Bulletin should have a negative coggin test within the past 60 days.

eorgia Cooking 1
Plan A Georgia
Chicken Bor-B-Que For The 4th
CHICKEN-QUE GEORGIA STYLE Chicken-que sauce for 6 halves
1/4 cup water
3/4 cup vinegar
1 '/2 tsp. tabasco or other hot
1/2 cup cooking oil
sauce
I'/itbs. salt
Heat ingredients to boiling point, keep hot on grill for
basting. Use a cotton mop to put on the sauce as a stiff
brush will tear the hot skin.
Sauce with tomato or sugar will burn and give a
charred appearance. A tomato base sauce can be used
for the last 15 minutes of cooking to reduce charred ap-
pearance. The above sauce should be used for the first
period of cooking.
Develop your own sauce to suit your taste by using
lemon juice, marjoram leaves, Worcestershire sauce,
etc.
The chicken should not be put on the grill until after
the fire goes out. Chicken should be placed on the grill
with the cut side down and use tongs to turn the chicken
as a fork will puncture the skin and allow the juices to
come out. Turn the chicken by the back as the skin on the
breast and legs will tear easily when cooking starts and
allows the chicken to dry out. the chicken is better if it is
salted on each side the night before. However, if you are
starting with chicken direct from the store, then salt on
the skin side when placed on the rack and salt the cut
side when turning chicken. Sauce is put on the chicken
each time it is turned.

No celebration of America's
bicentennial would be complete
without notable mention of the
American elm, a tree that has
witnessed many of America's
great events and has been
commemorated throughout the
U.S.
First, there is the "Washington
Elm" in Cambridge, Massach-
usetts, under whose boughs,
George
Washington
took
command of the American Army
in 1775.
Then we have the "Great Elm
of Concord," a tree beloved and
remembered in verse by literary
leaders such as Emerson,
Hawthorne, and Thoreau.
The John Quincy Adams Elm
was planted on the White House
grounds during his administration.
The Buffalo Bill Elm near LeClaire,
Iowa, commemorates the play-
ground of the famous William
F. Cody. And in Marietta,
Georgia, three American elms
mark the spot where Andrew's
raiders planned their unsuccessful
attempt to steal the GENERAL
locomotive from our state.
The bicentennial elm, however,
is a new tree untouched by
history and thanks to science,
hopefully untouchable by the dread
Dutch Elm disease, the killer that
ravaged our historic elms earlier
this century.
This tree, known as the "urban
elm," is not as massive and
spreading as was its forefather the
"American elm." It is a medium
size tree, supposedly more
suitable for "urban" planting. It is
similar in its rapidity of growth in
a variety of soils, dark green
foliage and tolerance to drought,
pollution and restricted root space.
Although 1976 commemorates the
urban elm's "coming-out party," it
is not expected to be available to
homeowners for three more years.

Beautiful, Dangerous Plants
Page 11
Abound Throughout Georgia
Many people are accidentally poisoned each year from contact with plants that they did not know were harmful. These plants, poison ivy, oak and sumac, occur in abundance throughout every part of Georgia.
Unusually Large Crop of Georgia Peaches
Georgia's bicentennial year has produced an unusually large crop of peaches - the largest in the state since 1968 . Total production is estimated at 4,375,000 bushels; some 121 percent over last year's crop.
The peach season is at it's peak, so Georgia peaches will be in the markets for only a few more weeks. Now is the time to stop by the Atlanta State Farmers' Market to purchase a bushel of delicious, tree-ripened Georgia peaches.
Peaches are a very fragile fruit that bruises easily; therefore they should be handled carefully. Peaches are picked when mature, so that the sugar content is fully developed; yet they should be firm enough to be transported. When selecting fresh peaches, look for a fruit with a smooth velvety skin and a creamy-yellow background color. The amount of 'blush' or redness indicates only the variety. Avoid greenish fruit, because it will not ripen further at room temperature. Fully ripened fruit will keep for several weeks when stored in the refrigerator. Choose fruit that is firm, but not hard. It should be free of bruises to prevent waste. Also, a fresh peachy fragrance is a good indicator of a ripe peach.
Robert L. Bomar of Stockbridge won first place as the outstanding student at the 15th Annual Natural Resources Conservation Workshop held recently. Robert was presented a $350 college scholarship and a .22 rifle by Nathan Byrd, President, Ga. Chapter of Soil Conservation Society of America and Sam Dunaway, Workshop coordinator. The Workshop is an educational activity sponsored by the Ga. Chapter, Soil Conservation Society of America, and the Georgia Association of Soil and Water Conservation District Supervisors.
Poison Ivy and poison oak are neither ivy nor oak species. Rather they belong to the cashew family. They may flourish in the deep woods, where soil moisture is plentiful or in very dry soil on the most exposed hillsides.
The leaves almost always consist of three leaflets. The old saying "Leaflets three, let it be" is a reminder of this consistent leaf character but may lead to undue suspicion of some harmless plants. Only one three part leaf leads off from each node on the twig. Leaves never occur in pairs along the stem.
Common poison ivy may be considered as a vine in its most typical growth habit. Vines often grow for many years, becoming several inches in diameter and quite woody. Slender vines may run along the ground, grow with shrubbery or take support from a tree.
The vines and roots apparently do not cause injury to the tree except where growth may cover the supporting plant and exclude sunlight. The vining nature of the plant makes it well adapted to climbing over stone walls or on brick houses.
Poison oak usually does not climb as a vine, but occurs as a low-growing shrub. Stems generally grow upright. The shrubs have rather slender branches, often covered with a fine pubescense (short hairs) that gives the plant a kind of downy appearance. Leaflets occur in threes, as in other ivy but are lobed, somewhat as the leaves of some kinds of oaks.
Poison sumac (also known as thunderwood) never grows like a vine but is rather a woody shrub or small tree usually found on the edge of moist boglands. The tree is not symmetrical but usually leans and is branched a great deal. Poison sumac leaves are composed of 7 to 13 leaflets arranged in pairs. There are no serrations and they have a smooth velvetlike texture.
Some folks know through experience that they are susceptible to poisoning by these plants. Others, however, have escaped contamination or have a certain degree of immunity. The extent of immunity appears to be only relative. In repeated contact with the plants, persons who have shown a degree of immunity may develop poisoning.
There seems to be no absolute quick cure for poison ivy, oak and sumac. Remedies may be helpful in removing the poison or rendering it inactive and for giving some relief from the irritation. Mild poisoning usually subsides within a few days.

Form Department of National Safety Council.
Poison ivy or poison oak can be destroyed with herbicides such as amitrole, silvex, ammonium sulfamate and 2,4-D. Apply sprays when there is little or no air movement.

horse, trail, pleasure, polo, racing and jumping. Horsemen claim if a horse can do it, you can be sure an Appaloosa has done it... and well.
More of the colorful future lies in the fact that the Cherokee Appaloosa Horse Club will be hosting an $8,000 Futurity and Maturity for our breed on September 4 and 5 at Stone Mountain. There will be 8 Classes (guaranteed prize money $1,000per class).
This Futurity and Maturity will be held in conjunction with our Annual Labor Day Show. We feel, that certainly the Appaloosa is contributing greatly to the horse industry in Georgia, for in the 10 year history of the Cherokee Club, our Stone Mountain shows have hosted more exhibitors than any other Appaloosa show in Southeast.
We are fast growing breed in Georgia and much of this growth is due to the great interest shown in our colorful breed. Our owners and breeders boast of some of the finest bloodlines to be had, and recently, one breeder acquired the fine foundation-bred Appaloosa stallion, High Spot, sire of five National Champions. It is with just pride and pleasure that the Appaloosa horse owner and lover looks at our colorful past and to our colorful future.
We invite everyone to our Labor Day Bicentennial Celebration at Stone Mountain to see and chat with us about the spotted "can do" horse.
Tractor Pull
The Georgia Tractor Pullers Association has announced plans to host a Bicentennial Tractor Pull July 17 & 18 at Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College.
Assisting the GTPA in the sponsorship will be the Ag Equipment Technology Club at ABAC, and local Tiftarea civic clubs.
For information, persons may contact Mike Hunt in Tifton at 912-382-1561.

Exciting Future
We, owners of Appaloosa horses, point with pride to the fact that the rare Appaloosa color scheme can be found in drawings in prehistoric caves of early man in France. In Chinese art, spotted horses are seen dating from 500 B.C.
They were brought into the Americas from Spain about 1600 and
the spread of the horses northward was made by Indians in 1730, where they became the war horse of the Nez Perce tribe. The Nez Perce were (pleased with their 'intelligence, stammina and colorful markings as they chose to breed them in preference to other horses. The breed nearly disappeared after the Nez Perce War of 1877 and the Nez Perce Chief Joseph, saved

them by making a 1350 mile dash into Canada. From these few horses came the foundation of today's Appaloosa breed. This is our colorful past.
The colorful future of the Appaloosa is best described by our crossing of the animals with Quarter horses and Thoroughbreds to reach more refinement and to race. Modern uses of the colorful breed are variation on the "can-do" theme, rang^ing<-> from pr arade,' show,' cow

Extra Buyers
Scheduled For
Tobacco Sales
Eighteen sets of buyers will give Georgia tobacco farmers much more sales opportunity time this year than they had last year.
Sales are scheduled to begin on Thursday, July 8 and continue on Friday, July 9. Thereafter, sales will be held Monday through Thursday.
The 18 sets of buyers, as compared with 12 sets last year, will remain on Georgia markets until the more northern tobacco states begin sales, after which eight sets will move out and 10 sets will remain on Georgia markets for the rest of the selling season.
"I feel we are most fortunate to have these extra buyers at the first of the season and during July, we should sell something like 100 million pounds of tobacco," Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin said.

The 14th Annual Watermelon Day will be held at the Atlanta State Farmers Market July 11.
Activities include free watermelon, free entertainment, a watermelon eating contest for children ages five to ten and a watermelon seed spitting contest. The state and national Watermelon Queens will be on hand for the festivities.
Watermelon Day is a salute to a leading fruit crop in Georgia. Georgia is the nation's third largest producer of watermelons with some 37,000 acres of Georgia farmland planted in sweet, hefty watermelons this year.
The free watermelon and festivities of the day are co-sponsored by the Atlanta Produce Dealers Association and the Georgia Watermelon Growers and Producers Association in cooperation with the Georgia Department of Agriculture.
