Fire Ant
Miss. State To Make Mirex

Many Activities
The American Saddle Horse Association of Georgia was organized in 1970 for the promotion of breeding, raising, training, owning and exhibiting the saddlebreds. The Association is also to create enthusiasm and good sportsmanship in dealing with its fellow horsemen. Our membership this year is in excess of 120.
The programs are geared to the varied interests of the horse lover. In
the future we plan to have a veterinarian, the Bicentennial movie on saddlebreds and other suggested topics from the members.
I feel we are {most fortunate to have the University of Georgia's College of Veterinary Medicine and their fine equine division at our disposal. They are very cooperative and have the horse at heart. One of the largest spectator sports in the nation is the one con-

cerning horses. Also, today there are more horses than there ever have been in the history of the country.
The point system was initiated this year to help in promoting Georgia shows. We realize with any new endeavor it cannot be perfect. However, it has been given a lot of thought and research. The members are participating enthusiastically and welcoming the added competition.
We plan an awards banquet in November to present the winner of the approved divisions their well earned recognition. To supplement the cost of the banquet, we are planning a horse . show on September 12th, but the location has not yet been confirmed.
ASHAG will sanction 12 to 14 shows this season where the points will be counted.
The Georgia shows brings many dollars for the financial aid to schools, hospitals, and the under-
privileged.
See you at the shows!

TL.onsssReSs in cattle nproduction due to flies continue to mount. Conservative estimates point to an annual loss of $389 million
nationwide. Because of this, consultants are
pounding away at implementing

fly control programs not only by use of direct methods, but
also through the use of procedures which promise long-

range control.

There are four basic targets

when discusssing fly control:

Horn fly, stable fly, face fly and

common house fly.

According to studies, feed-lot

cattle lose .23 pounds per day

due to flies.

These pests can be divided into

two categories

bloodsuckers

and disease-carriers. The horn fly is a bloodsucker.
They leave the animal only to deposit eggs in warm, fresh manure usually within two minutes after it is dropped. They return immediately to the animal to suck one to two drops of blood each day. Their life cycle is 10 to 14 days. Horn flies are usually found on the back and shoulders of an animal and sometimes under the belly and legs as well. There is no question they cut deeply into livestock
production. The stable fly also sports
piercing mouth parts and thus is also a bloodsucker. Depositing eggs either in damp manure or rotting flesh, the stable fly is a vicious biter menacing horses, dogs and people, as well as cattle. Their life cycle is usually complete in 24 days. They often feed several times a day.
Face flies are not bloodsuckers,

The Georgia Department of Agriculture has initiated plans to renew

state purchases of Mirex fire ant bait and treat up to four million

acres of infested land this spring. Following notification that the way has been cleared for the Miss-

issippi Department of Agriculture to take over the Mirex manufactur-

ing plant at Aberdeen, Miss., from Allied Chemical Company, Com-

missioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin immediately began steps to start

Mirex purchase and treatment.

Irvin said Senator Herman

Talmadge advised him that the Environmental Protection Agency was clearing the way for the

takeover following completion and signing of legislation whereby the

State of Mississippi will buy the

plant from Allied. "This is the best news we
have had in a long time and I
am sure it will be welcome news throughout the two-thirds of

Georgia infested with the im-

ported fire ant," Irvin commen-

ted. The Entomology Division of the

Snakes are back in season. Like it or not, Georgia's more than 50 species have surfaced or soon will be from their winter hideouts.
So prepare yourself. Know what to do when you meet up with a snake. Be able to spot the poisonous types. And learn how to handle a snake bite.
There are only nine species worth worrying about.
Georgia's rattlers include the eastern diamondback, dusky pigmy, Carolina pigmy, canebrake and timber. Northern and southern copperheads, eastern coral snakes and eastern cottonmouths complete the list of poisonous species.
Non-poisonous snakes have round pupils (blacks of the eyes)-. Except for coral snakes, all Georgia's poisonous species have vertical, cat-like pupils and a '

cials relative to the immediate purchase of Mirex fire ant bait for the treatment of up to four million acres this spring. Areas to be treated this spring are shown on the map. This was determined to a great extent by what areas were treated last, where we need to throw up a roadblock to halt the ant's advance or reinfestations and EPA approval.
Treatments this spring will be applied with the same Mirex fire ant bait formula used in the past, but research and production efforts will continue toward development of a new Mirex formula which will allow greater safeguards for use of the bait in keeping with EPA requirements.
In the meantime small packages of bait previously given out free so landowners could treat mounds on their property will probably not be available before next fall. The Mirex plant will direct all its efforts this spring to producing sufficient bait to fill the need for aerial contracts.

Dear Editor: Please print this piece in the BULLETIN in the
hope that children not allow themselves to look in the face of the present and not acknowledge duty and delay to meet its demands:
"Well Doing"
If there are any human beings who have the right to claim affectionate love, protection and regard, it is the aged parents of their children. The sunset of their life draws nigh; the shadows are lengthening before them. How anxious children should be then to repay their parents for the many years of care they received from them.
When you see their powers [mind] failing do not notice it. It is enough for them to feel it without a reminder. You may give them the best room in the house; you may garnish it with pictures and flowers; you may give them the best seat at your table, but if by your conduct you lead them to feel they have passed their usefulness, you plant a thorn in their bosom that will rankle their life.
Do not ignore their taste or judgement. Do not in word or deed imply to them that the customs of their day are obnoxious in good society and that they are stepping down in respectibility as they descent the hillside of life. Always bear in mind that the customs of which you are now so tenacious may be equally repugnent to the next generation.
Remember the years are rapidly rolling around. You will soon stand where they do now and imagine how thankful you will then be for the attentions it is now in your power to bestow.

People who are buying and
breeding horses should ask to see the registration papers before
leaving premises. The MARKET BULLETIN has received numerous
complaints of people who buy a horse with the seller promising to
send papers later and the papers never appear. The MARKET BUL-
LETIN has no jurisdiction over such instances. A smart buyer and
or person breeding a mare will ask to see the papers first.
In order to qualify to advertise horses, horse farmers should have had the livestock advertised in
their possession 60 days or more
before offering it for sale through this publication.

The Cherokee Rose is Georgia's state flower. It was adopted to represent our state first by the Georgia Federation of Women's Clubs and later by Resolution in the Georgia House of Representatives, August 15, 1916.
The flower was an appropriate selection because at the time, the rose rambled throughout the state, flowering in profusion on hillsides, old fences and roadsides.
Time, however, has not been kind to the Cherokee Rose and it is seldom found except in isolated spots. In fact, many Georgians have never had the opportunity to enjoy their own state flower. It is for this reason that in 1970 a Cherokee Rose was planted on the Capitol lawn, a plant donated by one of our MARKET BULLETIN readers.
To help you identify your state flower, its characteristics include a white (rarely pink) bloom with 5 petals, measuring 2 1/2 to 3 inches across; it is a vigorous climber and is evergreen in most of Georgia; it has hooked thorns (see illustration) and 3 leaflets (rarely 5).

Happy Birthday Georgia A fact I now recall, You too received your freedom At Independence Hall. The City? Philadelphia In seventeen seventy-six, The Patriots met in unity Their names to affix. To a famous, precious document With courage bold and true, Proclaiming love and liberty For people like I and You. Since then the Stars and Stripes

THE MARKET BULLETIN

The Eastern U. S. Agricultural and Food Export Council [EUSAFEC] and Southern Trade Association [SUSTA] in cooperation with the Foreign Agricultural Services, USDA, sponsored an exhibit of grocery and institutional food products at the 1976 Food Service and Equipment Exposition of the Caribbean in San Juan recently. Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin attended the exhibit as SUSTA'S representative and to promote Georgia's foreign trade. Commissioner Irvin is shown at the ribbon-cutting ceremonies of the CARIB-USA section of the exhibit with Henry Garret Diaz, exhibit manager; PhiUip Alampi, Secretary of Agriculture of New Jersey; Herbert Stone, SUSTA Executive Secretary; and Byron Montgomery, Chief of State/Trade Coordination Branch of the Export Trade Services Division of FAS.

Loading Freezer

Begin Fly

Simple, Logical
Rules for loading a freezer are simple and logical designed to keep the freezer temperature at 0 degree, and keep food rotating properly for maximum flavor and nutrition. Systematic storage also helps you find food quickly. Here are the rules:
Don't overload the freezer. Leave room for bargains and windfalls. If the freezer is not over full it will be easier to get at what you need.
Don't add too much "new" (unfrozen) food at one time. You can add three pounds of food for every cubic foot of storage space. For instance, if you have a 12-cubic-foot freezer, you can put in 36 pounds of unfrozen food. When you have added this amount, wait 24 hours before adding more.
For fast freezing, new food should be placed near the walls or the bottom of a chest or upright freezer.
Keep "like" foods together in baskets or on shelves. Foods also may be organized in heavy plastic or mesh bags.
Beware-Snakes
(Continued From Page 1)
harmless look-alike, the scarlet king, have round pupils and .bands of yellow, red and black. To tell them apart, see if the yellow and red bands are touching. If they're side by side, say hello to the coral snake.
"If a poisonous snake bites you, kill it so it can be identified. Pick up a stick or stone and aim for the neck. Handle the snake carefully even after it's dead. Reflex movements can cause bites, so stay away from the fangs.
Get to a doctor as quick as you can. Don't try to slash the wound or suck the poison. And don't fidget. The more you move, the more the poison circulates.

(Continued From Page 1)

but feed instead on the secretions

of animals from the eyes, lips

and nostrils. They are believed to

be disease-carriers, including

pinkeye.

To many, the house fly may

seem little more than a nuisance.

Not so with dairymen, who face

frequent inspection for a

sanitation, or cattlemen whose

operations are near residential

areas.

Most observers are leaning

toward pre-season control; that

is, preparing for the influx of

flies before they are visible. It is

not enough to knock down the

flies around the cattle; you must

work to kill the insects where

they breed and work, too, to see

they don't have the means to

return. (For control information

contact your county agent.)

Cattle rubs, premise sprays

and other forms of direct ap-

plication are now common in

most parts of the country.

Current research has added

another weapon to the anti-fly

arsenal. Oral larvicides, insect

killers fed to cattle and deposited

in their manure, have been

experimented with for several

years. 'The success has been

limited, but the promise high.

Oral larvicides, fed hi mixed

feed rations in nearly any

combination, attack the fly at

their most vulnerable point the

larvae stage in the manure. The

larvicide passes through the

animal

with no harmful

residue remaining in the animal

and lays in wait for the

female flies to deposit their eggs.

The kill factor of this method is

dramatic.

A consideration when using

oral larvicides is whether the

treated manure is safe to use as

fertilizer afterwards. Exhaustive

Nationwide Survey

Begins In June

Estimates of 1976 planted acreages and livestock numbers will be developed from a major nationwide survey to be launched in late May and early June by the U. S. Department of Agriculture.
The survey will be the basis for a report to be issued by USDA on June 30, estimating spring planted acreages and acreages for harvest for major crops both nationally and by states. This information will serve as the foundation for a series of yield and production estimates starting July 12 and available monthly during the growing season. The mid-year number of hogs and pigs in the country will be published in late June and for cattle a month later and will provide indications of marketings in the second half of 1976 and early 1977.
The cooperation of producers contacted is essential in pulling together a reliable set of estimates for use by all farmers and ranchers._______________

tests in dairy, cow-calf and beef

cattle operations show the

treated manure is completely safe

as a fertilizer.

Keep in mind, oral larvicides

are not a panacea. In fact, no

one method of fly control can

promise complete eradication of

the pests. But, given a balanced

approach, fly control is a reality.

Good sanitation and some form of

direct application can assure the

livestock operator that he is

working to earn a profit not

supporting the fly population.
