Morgan Horse
Oldest Breed
This is an especially exciting year for Morgan horse enthusiasts everywhere. The oldest of the American breeds of horses, the Morgan, has been selected as the official Bicentennial horse.
In tribute to the nation's birth-
day, champion Morgan horses in
Georgia have already participated in the festivities of the Dogwood Festival and the Bicentennial I Wagon Train.
From May 7 thrI ough May 9, Georgia Morgans will 'compete with Champions from all parts of the country in the $6000 Dixie Cup Morgan Classic Horse Show at Stone Mountain Park arena. At this event the Morgan will be able to demonstrate the versatility and stamina

that has made him famous. In addition to the traditional pleasure and park classes, Morgans will compete as western stock horses, driving horses, hunters, and as fast moving roadster horses. A special added attraction on Sunday will be a Bicentennial Carriage class.
Although the Morgan breed is growing in popularity in the Southeast, many horsemen do not realize the impact that this horse has had during the nearly 200 years
the breed has been in existence. Those who saw the Disney film "Justing Morgan Had a Horse", will remember this horse as a native of New England that could work on the farm, pull wagons, yet easily win local races. Even as late as the mid 1800's this horse was also the record holder in trotting races.
Perhaps the most important role the Morgan horse has played in history has been as the foundation of many of the other American breeds.
The Standardbred race horse, the Quarter horse, and the Saddlebred show horse are just three of the breeds which are influenced by Morgan blood. The ever popular Tennessee Walking Horse's foun-

Broilers are Georgia's number one cash farm commodity. In 1974* they produced $339,945,000 in farm revenue - $36,000,000 more than the closest competitor. Production of commercial broilers in Georgia began in the mid 30's. In 1934, there were 400,000 broilers - 40 years later 427 million birds were produced and marketed in Georgia. Georgia poultry leads the nation when chickens, eggs and broilers are combined. Separately, however, Arkansas produced a few more broilers than did Georgia putting us in second place nationwide.

4-H Winner
Catherine Hendricks of Macon has been named Youth Conservationist of the Year.
The award cites Ms. Hendricks for her outstanding contributions to the conservation effort.
It is Catherine's knowledge of the subject as well as her dedication that impresses people. She can tell you that, according to her calculations, "32,000 pounds of newspaper is worth, in recycling terms, 281 trees and 32 barrels of oil."
Set For May 1
Two major events will be held May 1 in Athens. Dairy Day and the State 4-H Dairy Animal Judging contest will begin at 9:30 a.m. at the University of Georgia Coliseum Livestock Pavilion.
The heifer sale for 4-H and FFA members will begin at noon.
Ag Hall Of Fame
Selecting Member
The University of Georgia Agriculture Hall of Fame is again receiving nominations for the most outstanding Georgian involved in agriculture. Nominations must be made by July 1, 1976, in order to be considered by the committee. Those placing nominations should include enough biographical and other pertinent information in order for the committee to have a basis for making a decision.
All nominations should be mailed to Ag Alumni Association, 201 Conner Hall, Athens 30602.
Number 17
Pecan Growers
Beware Claims
For Surfoctants
The Georgia Department of Agriculture Pesticide Division is continuing to receive disturbing reports regarding unsupported claims for effects of surfactants when used in conjunction with certain fungicides on pecans. Surfactants, wetting agents, soaps and other surface active agents contribute to better contact between the spray and the leaf surface.
However, there is absolutely no data to support any claim that these agents will enhance the activity of the chemical or reduce the need for the recommended amount of water for coverage.
On the strength of such claims, pecan growers are strongly urged not to reduce the recommended amount of chemical called for on the label and not to reduce the amount of water for dilution below that recommended for good coverage on the label.
Use instructions on the pesticide label have been established on the basis of extensive testing and are the user's assurance as to how the product can be most effectively and economically used.
"Pride Of The South"
Consignment Sale Held
The University of Georgia Livestock Judging Team announces the first "Pride of the South"-all breed heifer consignment sale, Friday, May 7, 1976, in Athens. Between sixtyfive and seventy head of high quality heifers from throughout Georgia will sell at auction. The heifers, both purebred and commercial, have been screened, and have quality enough to compliment almost any herd in Georgia or the Southeast.
The sale will be held at the University of Georgia Coliseum livestock pavilion.
All interested cattlemen are cordially invited to attend. For more information and a sale catalog contact: UGA Livestock Judging Team, Exum Worrell, Coach, Room 205-Livestock-Poultry Building, The University of Georgia, Athens, Ga. 30602, phone 404/542/1853 (work), 404/549/6301 (home).

Horses, mules, ponies
for sale
People who are buying and breeding horses should ask to see the registration papers before leaving premises. The MARKET BULLETIN has received numerous complaints of people who buy a horse with the seller promising to send papers later and the papers never appear. The MARKET BULLETIN has no jurisdiction over such instances. A smart buyer and or person breeding a mare will ask to see the papers first.
In order to qualify to advertise horses, horse farmers should have had the livestock advertised in their possession 60 days or more before offering it for sale through this publication.
All horses offered for advertisement through the Market Bulletin should have a negative coggin test within the past 60 days.

Acacia?
The acacia tree is in bloom. Beautiful drooping clusters of white flowers can be seen from the roadside throughout the northern part of the state for the next few weeks.
The acacia tree is also known as the black, yellow or white locust. It is a small to medium size tree usually about 50 feet high.
The inner bark of the tree is poisonous and livestock have died from eating the young shoots or nibbling the bark. Birds, however, feast off the seed and wild rabbits can eat the bark with no problem. Natural food fanciers even fry the blossoms as a culinary delicacy.

Georgia Loses
Dairy Scientist
H. K. (Keener) Welch, Jr., who developed Georgia's forage testing program, organized and managed the state spring dairy show, and organized the Purebred Dairy Cattle Association has retired after 38 years with the Cooperative Extension Service 30 of them in Georgia.
During the 30 years Welch worked with Georgia county agents and dairy farmers, average annual milk production per DHIA cow climbed from 5,220 pounds to 12,444 pounds. For all cows, the increase was from 3,270 to 9,200.
In addition to his work with adults, Welch developed a complete 4-H dairy science program in Georgia, including the annual 4-H dairy cattle judging contest.
An official judge of the American Jersey Cattle Club, he judged more than 300 county, district, and state dairy shows during his career.
An other Spring
Springtime is the time and season Of ecstasy beyond all reason, When beauty stirs upon earth's
lap Awakening from a winter's nap; When nature's promise is com-
plete, And the breath of spring is oh,
so sweet; When pretty blossoms can't resist The pleasure of a butterfly kiss, And trees expecting baby leaves Have crocheted little green
bootees; Anticipating feathered friends, Auditioning of new-born wings, When life and love are born
again. Lord, thank You for another
spring. Virginia B. Samford 210 W. Washington St.

THE MARKET BULLETIN
The first international trade show for food and agricultural products was held at the Rivergate Exhibition Center in New Orleans, March 4-7, 1976. This food exhibit was sponsored by the Southern United States Trade Association [SUSTA], a marketing organization of 15 state departments of agriculture, whose primary purpose is to collectively promote their state's agricultural products in world markets. Products of the 14 Georgia exhibitors were very well received. One of the exhibits representative of Georgia products was that of the Peanut Commodity Commission which featured peanut products available from two of Georgia's leading processors. This exhibit as pictured above shows from left to right W. Comer Sims, Assistant Commissioner, Alabama Department of Agriculture; Albert L. Wulff, Foreign Market Manager, National Peanut Council; Thomas T. Irvin, Commissioner, Georgia Department of Agriculture; Ben Reeves, Reeves Peanut Company and Tom Baetty, Stevens Industries, Inc.
Consumer Demand Growing
For Slow-Cooking Pots
Is it fad, fancy or freedom of time that has created the consumer demand for the slow electric cooker called the crock pot? Today's busy
housewife has discovered the convenience of this one-pot meal; the kind that grandmother made on top of her old wood stove.
The ease of meal preparation in the slow cooker is as simple as 12-3: just start the vegetables and meat cooking on the low heat setting in the morning; leave it simmering for 10 to 12 hours with no stirring necessary; then without any mess or rush, it's ready to be served as the family's evening meal.
During the cooking period, all food should reach internal temperatures of 185 degrees to 190 degrees F. to kill and prevent the growth of bacteria. On the low setting (200 degrees F.), it takes
Morgan Horse
(Continued From Page 1)
dation sire, Alien F-l, was a grandson of a Morgan stallion.
In Georgia there is a growing number of farms that are breeding and raising the Morgan to perform the many tasks that they are capable of. Because horses are an important part of the agricultural community, we are proud of our increasing development in the state.
It is a tribute to the established training and breeding farms in Georgia that so many people are selecting Morgans for the family to ride and enjoy. It does not matter that the horse was chosen for pleasure or for competition because the Morgan can do both with ease.
As President of the Georgia Morgan Horse Club, I invite all Georgians to come and see the "Bicentennial" Horse at the Dixie Cup Morgan Classic from May 7 to May 9. Visit with the many stables that will be at Stone Mountain all week. Enjoy the competition and see a part of history.
three to four hours for the internal
temperature of meat, poultry or
fish to reach 140 degrees F. and approximately four to five hours
160 degrees-170 degrees F. For the remainder of the cooking time, the
internal temperature rises ap-
proximately 2 degrees F. every 30
minutes. To reach and maintain the
above temperatures, the lid must
be placed securely on the slow cooker, and not removed during cooking. If the lid is removed, sig-
nificant amounts of heat will be lost and the temperature will drop considerably. Due to the cooker's
slow heat recovery, cooking time
will need to be extended. The key to the cooker's perfor-
mance is the cooking temperature
that it produces and maintains. At the basic low setting, the food should cook at about 200 degrees F. or between 185 degrees F. and
210 degrees F. At temperatures below 180 degrees F., certain kinds of bacteria thrive. At temperatures above 210 degrees
F., liquids will boil, causing foods
to cook too rapidly, and allowing them to become dried out or burned. Since every model per-
forms differently, it is important to know how your cooker works. To
check the cooking temperature, fill your cooker two-thirds full of cold
water, put the lid on and set the
heat control on the basic low setting as specified in your model's instruction book. Let it heat about
four hours, then check the temperature (about 200 degrees F.)
with a candy or deep fat thermometer. For additional informa-
tion about your slow cooker, contact your County Extension
Home Economist.
