Oil Retailers Caught In Bind

VALUE OF GEORGIA AGRICULTURAL EXPORTS FISCAL YEAR 1970 - 1975

Most gasoline retailers operate on

year to year property lease

agreements. The landlord is also the

supplier of gasoline. As a condition

to getting the lease the retailers

must enter supply agreements

simultaneously.

The retailers are therefore lock-

ed-in to purchase gasoline from the

j landlord-supplier.

(They must pay

whatever whole-

sale price is char-

j ged. There is no

! opportunity to

"shop" for a bet-

ter price.

Absent normal

business rights to

r"

seek out the best

price for gasoline for the consumers'

benefit, the retailers are dependent

upon the suppliers' "good faith" not

to do anything that will interfere

with or undermine the ability to com-

pete in the marketplace.

The landlord-supplier very

carefully places "suggestions" or

"demands" to retailers during day to day contracts. The retailers risk the loss of the right to occupy the station premises if they refuse to follow the suggestions even if the suggestions are detrimental to economic survival.
It is the unfair take-away of a business, especially after years of long and hard work, that must be stopped. Hundreds of gasoline retailers in Georgia have lost the rights to occupy station properties for no "good cause." The guilty landlord-suppliers are enjoying the fruits of the hard labors of retailers eliminated in this fashion.
The latest and most serious unfair practice ever faced by a gasoline retailer (or any other small businessman) compells legislative relief. The landlord-suppliers are selling gasoline at retail at prices they charge their own retailers for gasoline at wholesale-thus sacrificing the profit at retail to destroy retailers in competition with them.
The very survival of competition based on efficiency and service

For the tractor: Make sure that your employees understand that the master shield over the power take-off shaft must be in place whenever the power take-off drive is in operation. If the master PTO shield has been

Georgia Export
Market Growing
For All Products
The primary function of the Georgia Department of Agriculture's international trade effort has been aiding all segments of Georgia's food and agricultural industry in finding and expanding foreign markets for their products.
Georgia's agricultural exports grew a record 280 per cent during the five-year period between 1970 and 1975. Georgia leads the nation in exports of peanuts; ranks second in poultry, poultry products and pecans; is fifth in unmanufactured tobacco; and is tenth in cotton and cottonseed oil.
Georgia also exports substantial quantities of feed-grains, soybeans, protein meal, hides and skins, lard and tallow, frozen and canned fruits, vegetables and meats.
The export activities are aligned closely with those of the Foreign Agricultural Service and efforts are extended world-wide via agricultural attaches and personnel located in key overseas markets.

Georgia's major crops are peanuts, flu-cured tobacco (Type 14), corn, cotton, soybeans,

Fetterbush has delicate drooping clusters of white flowers. It is a five to seven foot shrub that grows in dense thickets and moist acid soil.
Mountain people call the plant dog-hobble because of a dog's inability to follow a scent through a thicket of the shrub. The strongly scented white flowers are overpowering and have ended many a "hunt" when the hound lost the trail of a potential kill.
Wildflower books say fetterbush is in bloom from May through June but some plants are already in flower. Native to the southern Appalachians, fetterbush is not a well-known plant being primarily restricted to northern Georgia.

Oil Retailers
(Continued From Page 1) rather than on the ability to withstand the greatest loss is at stake. The preservation of maximum free competition among many retailers will result in the lowest prices with the best services for all consumers. It has been proven that the personality and effort of a gasoline retailer and the goodwill and clientele generated thereby are of major importance to a successful gasoline station which can best serve the public needs.
When these landlord-suppliers have taken over from the retailers retail prices can be expected to go to new highs. The consumer will find no service and perhaps more importantly no one who really cares about his safety and his welfare unless something is done soon.
Consumers who value good service and believe in fairplay side with the gasoline retailers in their fight for minimum rules of fairness. Understanding the problem is essential. Your local gasoline retailers, if any are left in your community, can tell you more about their need for help. For specific information contact P. 0. Box 639, Decatur, Georgia.

machines: Tunnel shields must be coupled and uncoupled each time the implement is either attached or uncoupled from the tractor. They must be in place whenever the PTO shaft is powered. Integral-journal shields completely enclose the PTO shaft. Instruct your employees to make sure the integral-journal shield turns freely on the PTO power shaft before power is applied. Both the master shield on the tractor and implement shaft guards should be in place to cover the exposed U-joints for safe operation. The fully shielded powershaft, an improved version of the integral-journal shield, can be used without the master shield on the tractor. But the implement shaft guard must be in place. 2. NO RIDERS ON FARM FIELD EQUIPMENT The modern farm tractor and field machines are not designed to transport field workers. Caution all employees that they are permitted to ride only for instructional purposes and when required as machine operators. 3. STOP ENGINE BEFORE SERVICING EQUIPMENT Failure to stop the engine and to disconnect the PTO drive on trailed implements or the power drive on self-propelled field machines too often results in serious injury or fatal accidents. Use the Operator's Instruction Manual as a reference to explain and demonstrate to your employees how: (a) to stop the engine of a tractor or self-propelled implement before dismounting from the operator's seat. (b) to disengage the PTO control or power drive lever on either mechanical, hydraulic drive or self-powered implements. Caution your employees that they must never attempt to service, adjust or unclog the implement until the engine is stopped and all motion has ceased. It is the employer's responsibility to explain how both service and maintenance work can be completed in a safe and proper manner. Certain adjustments or service must be performed with the machine running. An example would be operating the built-in knife sharpener on a forage harvester. In such cases, employees must be instructed in all steps and procedures necessary to maintain the equipment. Be sure to caution your employees to take heed of all Caution, Warning or Danger signs when working around your farm field and farmstead machines.
4. MAKE SURE EVERYONE IS CLEAR OF MACHINERY BEFORE STARTING THE ENGINE, ENGAGING POWER, OR OPERATING THE MACHINE With large field machines,
the operator's view is obstructed by the size of the machine. A set of standard hand signals, may be taught to all employees working

either with, on, or around the machine.
5. DISCONNECT ELECTRICAL POWER BEFORE SERVICING EQUIPMENT Warning signs should be
placed on the control switch box as a further precaution against accidental start-up of any type of remote controlled feed processing or materials handling equipment.
Some Equipment Points To Check The nip-points, also called
"pinch" or "mesh" points, on all driven gears, belts, chains, sheaves, pulley sprockets, idlers and rollers shall be guarded.
All revolving shafts must be guarded. Smooth shaft ends can extend up to half the outside diameter of the shaft beyond a guarded position. Guards are not required for smooth shafts and short protruding shaft ends turning less than 10 rpm on feed handling equipment used on the top surfaces of materials in bulk storages.
On farm field machines, functional components shall be guarded to the fullest extent which will not substantially interfere with crop and soil conditions. This includes snapping and husking rolls, straw spreaders and choppers, flail rotors, rotary beaters, mixing augers, feed rolls, auger conveyers, rotary tillers, broadcast star distributor wheels and similar units.
Farmstead Equipment Exposed auger flighting on portable grain auger elevators shall be guarded with either grated or solid baffle style covers. Grated guards shall have the largest opening no more than 4-3/4 inches long; each individual rectangular opening shall be no larger than 10 square inches and be no closer than 2-1/2 inches to the rotating flighting. Slotted openings in solid baffle style guards shall be no wider than 11/2 inches or closer than 3-1/2 inches to the exposed auger f lightings. Guards, shields and access doors shall be in place when the machine is in operation. The standard requires "visual or audible warning where one or more machine components continue to rotate after power is disengaged". A sign must be conspicuously placed on all equipment telling your employee to LOOK and LISTEN for evidence of rotation (sound, vibration, or visibly moving components) and NOT to remove the guard or shield or to open the access door until all rotation has stopped. Your county agent has additional information at your request.
