"They are strange things" according to Fred Burnett, mushroom grower in Madison, Ga., and that seems to be the magic and the problem in mushroom production. For many years, Pennsylvania has had locks on the production of this edible that some call a fruit, some a vegetable but is actually a fungus. Pennsylvania still produces about 70 percent of the country's supply of mushrooms, but in an old brick school house in Madison about 20,000 pounds a month are coming to market. Unlike an ordinary crop, the mushroom likes a dark, damp and cool growing place. It will shrivel and die hi the sun and summer heat will make it weak. The most important part of

growing this fungus delicacy is the compost in which it is spawned and produced. There is an endless cycle of preparing this horse manure and cotton seed mixture (other growers have different for-
mulas]. The decayed organic material has to be just right and free of ammonia to produce properly when placed in the growing trays. This usually takes about four weeks. Then each tray will produce new growth for 40 to 60 days. Its an involved process and has not yet been reduced to an exact science. But with Atlanta alone buying 12,000 pounds of mushrooms each day, there is no trouble finding a
market for a good crop.

All Conservation
The National Association of Conservation Districts (NACD) was founded in 1946 by a group of 18 conservation districts assembled in Chicago.
It was formed as a result of the realization by conservation districts
that a national organization was needed to speak with one voice for districts and a strong organiza tion was needed to urge increased activity by the federal government in strengthening programs in soil and water conservation carried out by these local entities of state government. At the time of the first national meeting of NACD there were 1,638

For Pitch Canker
Georgia landowners are urged to check their pine plantations to see if there is any evidence of a disease called pitch canker. The disease is characterized by the heavy pitch soak of the wood beneath the canker that normally affects the terminal and branch leaders ^of the tree.
A preliminary survey of pitch canker in Southeast Georgia by the Georgia Forestry Commission and forest industry indicates only minor infection. A more complete survey of the lower coastal plains of Georgia will be made during the next two weeks. The concern in South Georgia was brought about by pitch canker problems in Flagler and Volusia Counties in Florida involving approximately 350,000 acres.
Any evidence of pitch canker should be reported to the local unit of the Georgia Forestry Commision.
Open House Held
An open house and rededication program for Conner Hall, administrative headquarters for the University of Georgia College of Agriculture, will be held April 24 in Athens.
For many years, renovation of Conner Hall was a major project of the Agricultural Alumni Assoc-
iation of The University.

Dear Editor: It is really amazing what a different view you get
when you start selling instead of just buying from the MARKET BULLETIN. I too used to complain about no prices and no phone numbers.
There are, however, good reasons for not including these in an ad:
1} I cannot sell a plant on the telephone. 2] The 20 word limit makes a phone number something of a luxury. 3] A short ad is good for attracting attention but you just can't adequately describe your plants. 30 words wouldn't help it's better to send a letter. 4] BULLETIN readers keep their papers apparently for years. I am still receiving orders from an ad I placed in January, 1975. Prices and
postage have changed! Please don't make us include phone numbers or
prices when a self-addressed stamped envelope [S.A.S.E.] will make it possible to send a list with detailed instructions and descriptions.

Horses,
mules,ponies for sale
People who are buying and breeding horses should ask to see the registration papers before leaving premises. The MARKET BULLETIN has received numerous complaints of people who buy a horse with the seller promising to send papers later and the papers never appear. The MARKET BULLETIN has no jurisdiction over such instances. A smart buyer and or person breeding a mare will ask to see the papers first.
In order to qualify to advertise horses, horse farmers should have had the livestock advertised in their possession 60 days or more before offering it for sale through this publication.
All horses offered for advertisement through the Market Bulletin should have a negative coggin test within the past 60 days.

Mountain

laurel

and

rhododendron are probably con-

fused by more people than any

other two plants in Georgia. They

bloom at approximately the same

time; they are found in similar

growing conditions; they bear

clusters of flowers; they are

evergreen and medium to large size

bushes. It's no wonder folks are

unsure which is which.

First of all, mountain laurel is a

native son. It is found growing wild

from Canada to northern Florida.

Kalmia latifolia was one of the

beautiful discoveries colonists made

when they arrived on American

soil. The plant was unfamiliar to

them as its habitat is limited to this

continent and Cuba.

Rhododendron on the other hand

is a beautiful exotic import.

Discovery of this plant family is

traced to the romantic lands of

Tibet, Nepal and Burma. It was

imported to England from India in

1811

a journey that started a

European craze for the plant and

its hybrids.

The mountain laurel, also fondly

known as calico bush, is a medium

to large evergreen. Its small leaves

remain glossy green year round

with showy rounded clusters of

waxy pink flowers in spring. In full

sun it is a compact plant with many

flowers; in shade it is taller with

less blooms. Its survival depends

on acid soil. It can tolerate no

substitute.

Rhododendrons are bushy

medium-sized evergreens, too, but

the leaves are larger.

The bloom cluster is one of the

most characteristic differences

between the plants. The mountain

laurel spring bouquet is composed

of small cup-shaped light pink

flowers. The rhododendron cluster

looks like 10 azalea blooms tied

together.

Within a few weeks these two

spring beauties will be blooming

all their glory. Remember short leaf

short name; long leaf long

name. Learn to recognize each and

THE MARKET BULLETIN
Safety standards conservation

(Continued From Page 1)
other types of material handling equipment.
What You Need To Do To Comply With The Machine Guarding Standard If you are a farm employer engaged in agricultural operations, beginning June 7, 1976, you must begin to meet some of the safety requirements explained in the following paragraphs. 1. Power take-off (PTO) guarding is considered a recognized hazard for which you can be cited. Even though the standard does not become effective until June 7, 1976, it is the responsibility of the farm employer to immediately insure that he has adequate PTO guards in place. You cannot permit any field or farmstead employee to operate any tractor or PTOdriven implement (regardless of the date of manufacture), unless the power drive between tractor and implement is guarded. 2. Effective June 7, 1976, and at least annually thereafter, all employee operators must be instructed in the safe operation and servicing of the tractors, field implements and farmstead equipment that they operate. 3. By September 7, 1976, you must equip all electric powered farmstead equipment with mechanical or elecrical disconnect devices designed to prevent equipment from being inadvertently or accidentally started while it is being serviced or repaired. Appropriate disconnect devices include: (A) a locking means on the main switch which can be operated only by the individual performing the maintenance or servicing; or (B) A manual switch or mechanical clutch. All circuit protection devices must be manual reset types with equipment like center pivot irrigators and well pumps for livestock watering, automatic resets will be allowed where the manual resets are "unduly burdensome". However, you must provide an electrical disconnect switch within 15 feet of the equipment to be used when maintenance or service is required. A sign must be prominently posted near each electric motor to inform your employee that the motor could automatically reset while he is working on it unless the electrical disconnect switch is utilized.
Other Machine Guarding
Requirements There are several other machine guarding. requirements you will have to comply with on or after June 7, 1976, beyond those discussed in the previous paragraphs. It is the responsibility of the employer to provide farm field equipment, farmstead equipment and cotton gins that protect your employees from moving machinery parts. BE CAUTIOUS WHEN SELECTING NEW EQUIPMENT AND MAKE SURE THAT IT IS PROPERLY EQUIPPED WITH APPROVED GUARDS BEFORE YOU BUY.

Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands. These districts work closely with
the USDA's Soil Conservation Service hi providing landowners with technical assistance in solving conservation problems. Through their national association, they have been able to give strong support to measures providing adequate personnel and funding for SCS so that the work can go on. With such support, NACD was largely responsible for the enactment of the Small Watershed Program, the Great Plains Conservation Program, the Forest Incentives Program and the Waterbank Program.
Although activities of NACD regarding federal programs and funding are important, they constitute only a small portion of the total program. NACD is constantly studying resource conservation issues ranging from the operation .of conservation districts to youth programs.
The annual observance of Soil Stewardship Week, for instance, is sponsored by NACD and the conservation districts. NACD also sponsors an annual conservation education awards program which recognizes the outstanding conservation teacher and conservation education district in the nation.
Today, NACD is deeply involved in working with conservation districts who are taking leadership in the 208 program which is the control of nonpoint pollution from agricultural and forest lands under the requirements of the Federal Water Pollution Control Act. A weekly publication, the TUESDAY LETTER, keeps conservation district officials informed of such developments in the natural resource field.
Georgians have played an im-
portant and active part in NACD since its founding. The late W. F. Hall, Sparta, served on the original Board of Directors of the Association. W. Houser Davidson, Ft, Valley, David Kistner, Snellville, and Joe Hawkins, LaGrange, have also served as NACD Directors.
