New Hope
For Mirex
Ever since 1971 when EPA placed unrealistic restrictions on the use of Mirex bait, used in the control and eradication of fire ants, the fire ant fight has suffered in Georgia. We, however, have never given up our fight to have the use of Mirex made available for eradicating the costly pest.
Last fall we were encouraged when U.S.D.A. decided to restore
funds to the states to strengthen our efforts to alleviate Georgia of this costly and dangerous pest. Then, ^-^imt?m^fm another road block was thrown in the path - Allied Chemical Company said they had been through too many problems with the federal agencies and were not going to go back into the business of making a product that might again be stopped by EPA.
However, two of the chemical companies' top officials visited with me one day recently and said they would be willing to make their patents and certifications available to another company or agency and lease their facilities to produce the bait.
Last week I talked with Mississippi Commissioner of Agriculture Jim Buck Ross and was advised that the State of Mississippi might purchase the chemical plant in Aberdeen, Mississippi and begin producing Mirex bait for infested southern states.
Commissioner Ross said th necessary legislation to purchase the company has been prepared for introduction in the Mississippi State Senate.
This is such encouraging news to me, and I am sure to all of our many, many< farmers and land owners who are plagued by the terrible ant, that I immediately personally contacted several Mississippi legislators urging passage of this legislation and assuring them that Georgia would be a big customer.
How soon Mirex will be available if the legislation is passed cannot yet be determined. But purchase of the
plant by Mississippi would make the availability of Mirex virtually

Consider Buildings Carefully When Landscaping With Trees

Consider the establishment of trees first when attempting to landscape a new home or update the landscaping around an established residence. Before selecting any trees ask yourself what type of trees are needed for your own individual situation. Are trees to be used for shade, for screening purposes, to reduce noise, for a special ornamental effect, or for a specific landscape need? All are important questions and definitely govern the selection of individual trees.

The canopy of trees can break the monotony of long roof lines.
Grain Dealers
Receive Forms
Some 230 grain dealers in Georgia must become licensed and bonded by July 1 of this year under provisions of a law passed by the 1976 Legislature.
Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin announced this week that application forms have been mailed to all Georgia grain dealers and urged immediate action on their part to comply with the law.
Irvin said persons needing further information on the new legislation should contact the Warehouse Division of the Georgia Department of Agriculture in Atlanta.
Poultry Show
The Etowah Show Bird Club will hold its first annual Poultry Show May 1, at the American Legion Fair Grounds, Canton. The show is open to Bantams, Standards, turkeys and waterfowl.
For information, contact Lorene Lee, Route 2, Gumming 30130, phone 404/887-2715.

Trees with medium to coarse foliage and spreading crowns provide the best shade, according to Henry Clay, Extension Horticulturist. Trees for this purpose should also be long lived and resistant to breakage and disease. Too often trees are selected simply because they grow fast rather than for their more lasting merits. The height of the structure should also be considered before selecting shade trees.
Large trees that grow from BO90 feet in height at maturity are needed to provide shade around 1 taller buildings. Medium growing trees, those reaching 35 feet at maturity, may be better suited for use around single storied dwellings. This size would provide ample shade around one storied dwellings and outdoor entertainment areas.
Another consideration is the dwarfing effect large trees have on one storied homes. If large trees are used, it is best to use them behind the home. Medium and small trees are better choices for planting on the side and to the front of smaller dwellings.
Trees which have medium to dense foliage should be selected for screening purposes. These

Farmers Beware Miracle Fertilizers
Georgia farmers have been bombarded this year with a host of products claiming miraculous results in increasing crop yields. Most of these products have no reliable research data to back up their claims. Attempts to evaluate all such products by agricultural scientists of the University of Georgia would result in a good portion of their research being diverted from needed research in the area of crop production. Many of these products can be evaluated on basic knowledge in the area of

Advisory Committee
For Georgia Peaches
Holds Annual Meet
The Distributors' Advisory Committee for the federal marketing agreement and order covering Georgia peaches will meet April 2 in Macon, the U.S. Department of Agriculture has announced.
Bill Knope, field representative with USDA's Agricultural Marketing Service in Lakeland, Fla., said the committee plans to review information on prospective growing and marketing conditions, and consider the need for new regulations under the marketing order. The committee is not expected to hold .additional meetings during the 1976 season.
The distributors' committee advises a growers' committee which, in turn, recommends to USDA grades and sizes of peaches appropriate for shipment under the marketing order. The Secretary of Agriculture issues these regulations as needed.
The meeting, Knope said, will begin at 1 p.m. in the Dempsey Motor Hotel, Macon, and will be open to the public. A brief period will be set aside for public comments and .questions.
Further information may be obtained from J. T. Scruggs, Industry Committee Manager, P.O. Box 67I04, Orlando, Fla. 32803. Phone (305) 894-9512.
Farmland
Correction*
In last week's farmland edition of the FARMERS AND CONSUMERS MARKET BULLETIN, our printer inadvertently published 16 southwest Georgia ads in the west central category.
Also, due to our increased volume of mail as a result of GiBf-;; cularizing portions of our mailing list, many farmland ads were mixed with this mail by the post office and therefore were not received in time for publication. In next week's BULLETIN (April 7) we plan to publish those ads postmarked by March 12 (our deadline for the farmland issue). At this time, we will also publish any necessary corrections in farmland ads.

Dear Editor: I have fought mildew all winter - in our clothes,
in our books, even my shoes. Now spring has brought with it a new discovery - the outside of our house is mildewed! I have black, red and green mildew and it seems to grow equally well on the sunny side and shady side of the house.
What I have done to deserve this? Mildred White Jonesboro, Georgia
(Editor's note: It's not what you've done, but what you've failed to do. Prevention is the best cure for mildew. Paints containing zinc oxide for top coats over the primer coat are best. Before repainting however, the old paint should be cleaned with a solution that will kill the mildew fungi:
3 ounces (2/3 cup) trisodium phosphate 1 ounce (1 /3 cup) household detergent 1 quart (5 percent) sodium hypochlorite (household bleach) 3 quarts warm water or enough to make 1 gallon
Scrub surface with fairly soft brush. When clean,' rinse thoroughly with fresh water from a hose. Avoid splashing the solution on shrubbery or grass. WEAR RUBBER GLOVES. After removing mildew and before it has a chance to grow again, paint surface with zinc oxide paint or paint containing a mildewcide (poison for mildew fungi).

OLD FASHION WHITE BREAD

1 /2 cup milk

1 II cup worm water

1/2 cup sugar

(105-115 degrees F)

11/2 tsps. salt

2 pkgs. of cake yeast

1/4 cup margarine

2 eggs (beaten)

4 1/2 cups sifted flour (about)

Scald milk. Stir in sugar, salt, and margarine, then cool

to lukewarm. Measure warm water into warm bowl.

Sprinkle or crumble yeast into warm water and stir until

dissolved. Stir in the milk mixture, beaten eggs and half

the flour; beat until smooth. Stir in the remaining flour to

minutes. Place dough in greased bowl, turning to grease

top. Cover; let rise in warm place, free from draft, until

double in bulk, 1 to 1 1/2 hours; punch down; turn out on

lightly floured board and shape as desired. This recipe will

make 2 loaves of bread equally divided or shaped for pan

rolls, crescents, clover rolls, etc. After shaping, let rise

about 1 hour. Bake in preheated oven 375 degrees F. until

brown. Rolls (15 to 20 min.) Loaves (40 to 50 min.)

Flower plants,
bulbs and seed for sale
Flower advertisers must have an affidavit stating that they produce their own plants, bulbs and seed and that they w_re not purchased for resale. All plants must be inspected to assure disease-free condition. Applications for inspection are available from the MARKET BULLETIN office. There is no charge for this service.
We are studying the feasibility of having a MARKET BULLETIN flower show and sale during the Dogwood Festival [weekend of April 10, 1976] at the Atlanta Fanners Market. We would like to know if our advertisers are interested in participating before we pursue it further.

Great burdock will attach itself to you - literally! The plant's most unique characteristic are the hooklike burs that cling to clothing and hair and are difficult to remove.
It is by way of these burs that great burdock has spread throughout the world as the seed for next year's weeds are contained in the bur.
Great burdock is a strong weed and a big plant. It is not easy to eradicate. If you pull the plant up by the roots you can be confident that it will grow back. Most burdocks have roots at least 20 inches deep. The only successful method to rid property of the nuisance has been a spray of silvex or 2-4-D.

New Hope
(Continued From Page 1) assured.
I am hopeful that we soon can get on about the job of controlling and eventually eradicating this pest hi Georgia and stop the build up of ants in our state and the threat of spreading fire ants throughout the country.
If you have friends and relatives in Mississippi, let them know how we feel about the initiative their state is taking in this important fight for agriculture and land protection against the fire ant.

I stand atop a piedmont hill And all around me The world is still Except for the breeze in the pines. Then, in a moment of splendor, The night changes to day. Trees lift up their branches Toward the heavens And receive the warmth Of a new morning sun. Birds begin to sing Their cheerful songs While a squirrel glides gracefully From tree to ground to tree Chattering for his mate to awaken. And on a stray leaf, A grasshopper drinks the morning dew, While over the way a rooster crows. Now, there's lights from house windows As people awaken from a night of sleep. The smell of sausage and eggs Fills the air. The world has awaken.
But, I have been up for a time. I got up early To watch the sun come up. For there's something good That words can't tell About seeing the world awakening And a new day born.

Landscaping
(Continued From Page 1)
should grow moderately fast and
should be evergreen in order to perform their required function throughout the year. When selecting for this purpose, choose trees that hold their lower limbs and fill out well at the base. Remember to allow enough room at planting time for trees to fill out properly. In some cases, trees planted too close will eventually shade out lower limbs causing sparse foliage. These same general criteria mentioned above apply when selecting trees for noise control.
The specific use for which a tree is used in the landscape influences the selection. Often a spreading crown is preferred to block out a portion of a long monotonous roof line or a large expanse of masonary or lumber
siding. Small trees with medium crowns may be grouped to balance the effect of a rather large tree elsewhere. Horizontally branching trees can be selected to tone down strong vertical architectural features. Some landscape situations even provide ideal backgrounds for color contrast. In these situations flowering trees are the logical choice. Trees with interesting bark patterns are often chosen to add interest at a particular spot in the landscape or to provide contrast in the winter season to a particular ground cover area.
Space and environmental quality can also influence tree selection. Where space is very limited, trees having a columnar or upright growth habit are preferred. Air pollution is even taken into account when selecting trees. Certain types are more resistant to stress from sulphur dioxide, florides, and other pollutants and are better choices for use in city and industrial locations.
The best advice to homeowners, therefore, is to analyze the individual situations and then base the selection of trees on the need for shade, screening purpose, noise abatement, or specific landscape need. If your talents don't seem to run in this direction, take a polaroid shot of your home from several different angles and show them to a competent nurseryman or a Landscape Architect. Both may be able to show you where a need exists and be able to recommend the right type of tree for that location.
