Future Farmers Observe Week
Agriculture has changed in the last 20 years. Today it's a highly complex, mechanized business. There are hundreds of specialized occupations. Nowadays when people talk about agriculture they're talking about more than farming they're talking about agribusiness.
Careers in agribusiness require a broad range of talents. And they're

and on the job experience they will develop the skills necessary to qualify for a satisfying career.
Nearly 9,000 schools across the nation offer courses in agribusiness education. In addition to programs in production agriculture, these schools offer other types of agribusiness courses such as agricultural supplies and services, food processing, forestry, natural resources, horticulture and agricultural mechanics.
A unique feature of the agribusiness program is that learning doesn't end in the classroom. Learning can be an exciting experience in the FFA, the youth organization for

Spring Farmland Edition Coming
Georgia Crops Reach
The Spring Farmland Edition is coming March 19. The deadline for ads received in the FARMERS AND CONSUMERS MARKET BULLETIN office is March 5. Please remember that no realtors, brokers or dealers are allowed to advertise in this edition, only individual farm owners wishing to sell their personal property or wishing to purchase farm property for their own use.
Dead Animal Act
Violation Brings
30t 0 Dollar Fine The Georgia Department of Agriculture, the State Game and Fish Commission and the Chatham County Police worked in cooperation last week in the issuance of a warrant against a Chatham Countian for violating the G.D.A.'s Dead Animal Act.
The State's Dead Animal Act requires that all dead animals in Georgia be disposed of in a sanitary manner (burial or incinerator) to prevent the spread of disease, odors and filth.
Three cows were discovered by the Chatham police dumped by a road in Chatham County. Department inspectors were notified of the incident by the Game of Fish Commission.
The cows were then traced by the G.D.A. to the sales barn which reported that they were sold to a James Butler. A warrant was issued to Mr. Butler for violation of the, Dead Animal Act in the amount of $300.00.
Billion Dollar Mark
For the first time in the state's history, the gross value of Georgia's crops has
surpassed the one billion dollar mark. According to the Georgia Crop Reporting Service, the "billion dollar barrier" was broken by a comfortable margin in
1974 as the gross value rose 33 percent to total $1,264,716,000.
On the darker side, production costs have climbed dramatically. A
report covering production costs and net farm income will be available in
early fall. These figures will probably show a decrease in some areas.
Major contributors to the increase
were corn, peanuts, tobacco and soybeans - all of which had higher
production and prices than the
previous year's crops. Corn had the
largest dollar value rise, increasing
over $123 million while tobacco
showed the largest percentage rise
with a 90 percent jump. Some of the brighter aspects of the
1974 crop year included record high yields, by a wide margin, tor both

The 34th annual National Peach
The all-breed sales offer Georgia cattleman an opportunity to purchase
a bull with complete performance information, weaning rates, average daily gain and yearling weights.
Council Convention will be held February 23-26 in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Peach growers and
representatives from Georgia and 1 7 other states are expected to attend.

Each of the peach growing states will have a part on the program along with representatives of the U.
Service, U. of Ga. Calhoun sale, Feb. 26, and Clude Triplett, Exten. Serv. Tifton, for the Tifton sale on March 5.
S. Department of Agriculture. They will tell about peach producing and marketing practices in their home states.
FFA Projects Benefit Students
Instruction in ornamental horticulture greenhouse operation, plant production and flower design and arrangement ate some of the newer and more popular teaching areas in vocational agriculture. Vo Ag offers many opportunities.
Farm wiring and basic electricity are part of the vocational agriculture curriculum. This contestant demonstrates his design for controls of cooling and ventilating fans. They are attached to a time clock over ridden by a thermostat
Livestock production is still one of the major phases of vo-ag instruction and FFA activity. This FFA member works with feeder pigs for his project; others raise cows, poultry, horses, and related areas of animal industry.
Food processing is another area of instruction in vocational agriculture. This student is accompanied into the cooler by a State Department of Agriculture inspector who grades beef. The inspector is also a former FFA

j Companion Gardening Response j
Dear Editor: I take issue with the article "Companion Gardening Plants
Compliment, Aid One Another" printed in the MARKET BULLETIN on February 5, 1975.
Thousands of Georgia people will be growing gardens this year for the first time. These people have no prior experience in dealing with problems that will develop. The information contained in the above article is mostly false, misleading, and can cause new gardeners to fail in their first attempt at growing vegetables.
Scientific research conducted in Pennsylvania and Kentucky on this same subject arrived at these conclusions: "Companionate combination of plant species used in this test showed no measurable or visable indication of offering protection from insect damage."
I strongly feel that a retraction should be printed to this article. If you desire scientific proof, write Department of Entomology, Pennsylvania State University, University Park, Pa.
Paul Colditz Extension Horticulurist Blairsville, Georgia 30512
Dear Editor: In the past I have written to criticize articles, however,
today I am writing in praise of an article. The article is the one on using beneficial insects instead
of harmful insecticides. More articles like that are needed in this time when farm chemicals are costing more and more but doing more harm than good.
Jason Machen Bowman, Georgia 30624
Dear Editor:
Last year about this time you published a release of mine on wasp control. My work involves insect stings and the possible control of stinging insects. Now is the time of the year to be thinking of this again but I am writing to you for another reason.
This forthcoming season I plan to try out new methods of wasp and bee control (including hornets, yellow jackets and Other paper wasps, wild honey bees, carpenter bees and bumble bees). I would like to let the readers of the Market Bulletin know that I am looking for nests of these insects to try out such control methods. I especially want to find nests in the Athens-Commerce-Jefferson-Watkinsville area, since I'M be able to handle these readily.
With your help it is likely that I'll find a considerable number of these nests to complete some interesting new control procedures. Thank you for your assistance. Sincerely, Henry R. Herman Associate Professor Department of Entomology U.G.A. Athens, Ga. 30602

Wormwood is often used in the garden as an ornamental because of its unusual gray color. The finely divided leaves are silvery gray with a bitter taste and pungent aroma.
Sagebrush is a common variety of wormwood. It was used by the Indians to dye fabric and more especially, as the sacred wand for medicine men.
Europeans have claimed that if a traveler carries a sprig of wormwood he will not become tired. Wormwood is also a good moth repellant when placed among clothing and linens.
Wormwood is drought resistant and grows best in full sun. The plants do need periodic pruning to maintain good compact shape.

Pecan Groves
Pruning
It is now time to prune the broken and low hanging limbs in your pecan grove. These limbs may have been broken because of the heavy weight of nuts or high winds.
Pruning is beneficial to the pecan tree, not only by lifting the limbs up so that disease is not as prevalent in the low areas, but also by enabling the root system to supply more nutrients to the top of the tree instead of the low hanging limbs which are not producing as heavily as the upper portions of the tree.
Nitrogen
February is the time to put nitrogen fertilizer on pecan groves. It is important that it be put on during this time so that the nitrogen has a chance to move down into the root zone before growth starts in the spring.
Nitrogen is the most important element needed during the first flush of growth of the pecan trees, so make sure that you get your fertilizer out now.
All of your fertilizer N, P, and K can be applied now as well as zinc. If you have not had a soil and leaf test run, go ahead and have a soil test run immediately, and fertilize according to these results.
New Groves First year transplanted pecan trees need three or four pounds of 10-1010 applied in February. Additional applications of small amounts of nitrogen should be added in May, June and July to encourage continued growth or a second or third spurt of new growth in order for trees to reach production size within approximately four years.
Fertilize nut producing trees in the month of February so that the root systems will be in a position to make fast, sturdy and hardy twigs in about six weeks.

Fireplaces Supplement
Heating, Fuel Problems
High fuels costs have caused many people to turn to fireplaces as a source of
supplementary heat. After all, nothing is nicer than a crackling fire on a cold
winter night with nuts roasting on the hearth, the family all gathered around,
and the cat snoozing away enjoying the warmth.
Before nostalgia gets the upper hand, a look at the facts is in order.
Fireplaces are not an economical means of heating. Tests show that, as

Fireplace Construction The building of a good fireplace that draws well and does not smoke is somewhere between an art and a science. There are certain basic proportions concerning width, depth, height and throat size that must be

Prefabricated Fireplaces
A prefabricated fireplace is often the ideal solution where a fireplace is desired and for some reason masonry construction cannot be used. They come in many styles and colors, but follow the manufacturers instruction when installing. Some models are insulated so that they can be installed against a wall. Others must have as much as three feet of air space
around them for safety. Shop carefully before buying so that the correct type is purchased.
The same precaution applies to Franklin stoves and other wood burning heaters.

Food Labs
The Laboratories Division of the Georgia Department of Agriculture is responsible for the testing and examination of agricultural and related commodities manufactured and/or offered for sale in Georgia.
The labs conduct series of tests on animal feeds and feed ingredients, plant food and liming materials, pesticides, foods, meat and dairy products.
This operation is provided for by the Georgia Legislature for the purpose of protecting the consuming public against misbranded, adulterated and inferior quality products. It also benefits reputable manufacturers and producers by protecting them from dishonest or negligent competitors.
Samples of commodities are collected and examined to insure that product claims and guarantees are accurate. Appropriate regulatory action can be taken in case of test deficiencies.
The Food Lab is responsible for the analysis of foods processed in Georgia other than dairy products. Official testing is divided into two main categories: (1) Comparison to label claims - net
weight or volume, contents, composition, nutritional elements, standards of identity and wholesomeness. (2) Examination for the presence of undesirable materials - light and heavy filth, insect and rodent contamination, adulterants, inferior products, and excessive bacterial levels. Major or continued deficiencies may result in fines or revocation of license to operate. *Georgia Department of Agriculture
Marks, Brands

If further information is needed, please write the Marks and Brands Division, Georgia Department of Agriculture, 19 Hunter Street, S. W., Atlanta, Georgia 30334.
