Home Economists
Have Opportunity
County extension agent - home economics! This sounds like a big name and it is. The more than 200 women employed by the Cooperative Extension Service here in Georgia have a unique opportunity. It is our privilege to work with homemakers and youth throughout the state.
We help by being alert and well trained for our jobs. Each home ec-
onomist is contiually being trained with current research in order to be prepared. The training may be a one day session or it could be for 2 or 3 days. Other times the training is received from studying research articles. We have the latest information available and if for any reason we

D. Reece, President, Georgia Association of
Extension Home Economists, Irwinton 31042)
do not know or cannot find the answer to the problem, we have the facilities of the state staff housed at the University of Georgia in Athens.
With the current economic problems, most families want help. And your local county extension agent can help. She teaches special classes and workshops that are open to the public. She makes home visits when these are necessary for successfully completing a job. By writing newsletters and newspaper articles, she is able to get home economics information to more people. You may see her on television or hear her on the radio. She is a busy person but not too busy to help someone with a problem. Call her when you need help.
The county Extension home economist may be a member of the Georgia Association of Extension Home Economists. This organization has 180 members and is constantly working to help the local member do a better job and to be recognized for the fine job she is doing. Each member is encouraged to work on professional improvement by attending classes, tours, meetings, and even to continue further college training. There are scholarships and awards available.
This fall about 55 Georgia members will be attending their National Meeting in Knoxville, Tenn. These

STRAIGHT LINE
I have a cow that eats the bark off of pine trees. Ruins the trees and makes the milk taste funny. What causes this? Mrs. H. L., Mt. Airy
Unbalanced ration causes this.
Ask your feed dealer for a good vitamin and mineral supplement to
feed your cow free choice. Also, put her on a high quality dairy
feed and give her good hay so that she may have it free choice at all
tunes. Paint the areas on the trees where the bark has been eaten
with pure pine tar. This should
taste bad enough to her that she
will stop.

members will receive the latest information to help them do better jobs back at home.
If you do not know your local Extension home economist, look her up. She will be a friend and will be ready to help you to have a fuller and better life.

Bears Close Watching
The price and income situation that developed for agriculture during the last half of 1975 should extend well into the new year. Prices and costs have been moving sideways. The overall level of prices for farm products is near year ago levels. Strong world-wide demand for U.S. grains is absorbing some of the pressure from bumper crops. Costs have held steady
since mid October, mainly because of feed, fertilizer and petroleum prices..
29th Annual Seed
Short Course Held
The Twenty-ninth Annual Seed Short Course, conducted by the Georgia Crop Improvement Association in cooperation with the Cooperative Extension Service, will be held January 19-20, at the Seed Technology and Development Center, Athens. For further information, contact your county agent.
Naft Onroc Congress
To Be Held In Ga.
The 1976 Southeastern and National Winter Duroc Congress will be held in Athens, at the University of Georgia Coliseum on January 4, 5 and 6. More than 300 entries have been received for this event with 22 states being represented.
The judging contests will be followed by the national sale of all the breeding animals. The public is cordially invited to attend this national swine show.
9 Swage Few?
In Georgia the small chain fern can be found in almost every branch and creek. Although not the prettiest of the ferns, its availability .and compatibility to our growing conditions make it a familiar fern to most Georgians.
An interesting characteristic of the chain fern is the arrangement of fronds produced singly in a row from a creeping rootstock; most ferns radiate from underground rootstocks.
But markets will bear watching closely. There is a delicate balance in the optimistic outlook. Small changes in either supply or demand expectations can trigger substantial changes in prices. The

physical supply of farm products is in private hands and appears to be adequate to meet anticipated domestic and export demand. However, we ""s'K6~uTd~~watch""f6F unexpected or unusual developments that can alter these prospects.
Developments in international markets are especially important. Export demand usually takes 20 to 25 percent of U.S. crop output. Agriculture's stake in trade negotiations and world markets is worthy of more attention. Continued recovery of livestock output is closely tied to developments in overseas markets and their impact on the supply and cost of feed.
The domestic market for farm products remains strong for 1975. Economic recovery will be slow as inflation and taxes erode purchasing power of consumer incomes. Nevertheless, consumer spending for food promises to sustain the domestic market for farm products.
Uncertainty persists in the farm cost picture. Supplies of production goods have improved. Price increases will be smaller.
Farmers should view 1976 with cautious optimism. Good farm records and planning will be essential again. Production plans need to be finely tuned to individual farm efficiency and markets. Marketing plans should be geared to production plans. Farm management clubs now being established should pay off.
The fertile and sterile fronds are completely separate, the sterile ones being produced in early spring and the fertile ones visible in fall. The fuller deeply cut sterile fronds are green except at the very base. The shiny weed-like fertile stems are brown.
Dairymen Meet
The Georgia Dairy farmers will hold their 25th Annual Convention January 13-14 at the Atlanta Internationale Hotel. All dairymen are urged to come.
