Future of Tobacco
Rests On Varieties
Georgia flue-cured tobacco growers may miss a real opportunity to lock-in the export market for Georgia grown tobacco for at least the next decade if they fail to switch back to the old line varieties which produce a full bodied leaf high in flavor and aroma which foreign buyers want and have become accustomed to buying when they come to our Georgia markets.
According to information I received in a letter from Dick
Schonbach with the Reemtsma Company of Hamburg, Germany, the largest single purchaser of Georgia tobacco, such flavor and aroma can only be produced by planting the old line varieties bred from White Gold, Hicks, 2326 or some other old line tobaccos. Other export buyers have, without exception, told me the same thing. Production history in Georgia for the past 15 years show that yield per acre as well as net dollar income from old line varieties compare favorably with that received from disease resistant strains of tobacco. These strains are not desired by our foreign customers. Most resistant varieties normally produce a neutral leaf with less body, flavor and aroma than leaf from old line tobacco. Georgia growers who do not have a disease problem should be very careful in selecting their variety for 1976 if they want their tobacco to retain its lead in demand by the export buyers. Our foreign customers can go into many other parts of the world and purchase neutral tobacco low in flavor and aroma for about half the cost of similar tobacco produced in the United States. Several of the export buying companies made it very clear to me during the 1975 selling season that their decision to go ahead and buy our '75 crop of up-stalk leaf tobacco was made reluctantly because of the great amount of resistant varieties we had planted in place of the old line varieties.
Some Georgia tobacco leaders are suggesting that we consider planting extra tobacco acreage in 1976 which would give growers the option of

Before Buying Miracle Products In Truck, Car Tax
Products called soil activators are being marketed in Georgia on the basis that they activate natural soil microorganisms or introduce new beneficial microorganisms, thus resulting in increased crop yields.

Assistant Commissioner
Named For Department
Dr. John Cobb of Statesboro has been named Assistant Commissioner of Agriculture in charge of Animal Industry for the Georgia Department of Agriculture.
Cobb, whose appointment was announced by Commissioner of
Agriculture Tommy Irvin Thursday, joined the Department in 1970 after more than 20 years in private practice in Statesboro.
Since joining the Department, Dr. Cobb served as District Veterinary Supervisor of the state's red meat inspection program for Southeast Georgia and more recently, as Assistant Director of the state-wide meat inspection program. Cobb succeeds Dr. Guy Eberhardt who passed away unexpectedly on Sept. 14.
Attempts to evaluate all such products by agricultural scientists of the University of Georgia would mean that a good portion of their research time would be diverted from conducting needed research in the area of crop production.
Two such products, "Medina
(This article was prepared especially for the Market Bulletin by P. J. Bergeaux, Extension Agronomist, Soils and Fertilizer, Cooperative Extension Service, Athens 30602.)
and Supernate," were evaluated in a cooperative research program by agricultural experiment stations in eight southern states in cooperation with the U.S.D.A. Listed below is a brief summary of the results.
1. Based on laboratory analysis, Medina and Supernate contain plant nutrients that are already common to soils. Amounts of these elements that would be added to the soil based on manufacturer's recommendations would be too. low to supply crop requirements.
2. Application of these products

motor vehicles. Although the report does not recommend raising taxes, it does shift the burden. In studying this report, Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin said he thought the committee had made some good recommendations which would close loopholes in the collection system and more importantly take the tremendous task of collecting taxes at various rates for all the motor vehicles in Georgia at one time of year off of the County Tax Commissioners of Georgia.
However, the Commissioner was distressed over two important factors in the report: [1] In equalizing the amount of tax payment for various weights of automobiles, the largest increase and greatest burden would be placed on the middle and low income families in Georgia who own a small, inexpensive passenger car.
(2) "The other factor which greatly concerns me," Irvin said, "is the raising of the tag fee on the average size pick-up truck, the kind generally

How do I get rid of the yard cane or fishing pole plants that are taking over? W. M., Jakin
Repeated cuttings or the use of Dalapon or Dowpon at the rates recommended in the fact sheet we mailed should do the trick. Or you could set up a fishing pole stand for the tourists. Some of them even like kudzu.

Can you put lye around fruit trees to keep worms out? C. R., Chickamauga
No. Lye is applied around some plants to provide potash; however, this is quite expensive, and can cause root damage. We suggest that you use the insect control guide we mailed *yo*u*to keep those worms away.

Dear Editor: I read the article on firewood in the BULLETIN
and don't know if I have been paying too much for my wood. How can I know that I am getting my money's worth when most everybody sells "by the load"?
A. R. Oliver Tucker, Georgia
(Editor's note: The standard unit of measurement for firewood is a cord which measures 4' x 4' x 8'. You should either see the wood stacked before you buy it or have it stacked in cords when delivered. Although stacking may cost you a few dollars, it is the only sure way to know how much wood you have actually bought. The use of standard measurements such as cords,
_J pounds, yards, acres, etc. will save you money and
help you know exactly what you are buying.

Climbing Few?
The Japanese Climbing fern was found in Japan and brought to this country as an ornamental. However, it adapted so well to our growing conditions that it escaped and is considered a weed in some areas.
As a weed, it forms dense tangled masses on shrubs and can be a real nuisance. As an ornamental it is a lacy, finely cut fern that can be trained as a house plant to grow with support in a pot.
The Japanese Climbing fern can be found throughout Georgia. It's favorite habitat is stream and river banks and sometimes by the side of the road.
Few?
The walking fern is aptly named because of its ability to form roots at the tips of the leaves. The long, narrow, finely pointed leaves radiate from shallow roots which usually grow on rocks rather than soil.
This is a small fern usually no longer than six inches. The leaves have a graceful arch and are slightly leathery. In Georgia the species is primarily confined to the limestone regions of north Georgia.

at recommended rates did not alter the number or activity of microorganisms that were naturally present in the soil. The microorganism population in the products was considered to be too low for the products to be regarded as soil or plant inoculants.
3. The severity of cotton root was not reduced in greenhouse tests or in well-designed field plots.
A summary of the effect of these two products on crop yields conducted in four southern states; Texas, Louisiana, Kentucky, and Alabama, is shown in Table 1.
These research results show that crop yields were not significantly increased over the check plots by

leaving lugs and primings on the stalk and harvest our quota in the more valuable up-stalk leaf tobacco made up of the cutters, leaf and smoking leaf grades. This would cause less lugs and priming grades going to market. The lugs and primings made up 80 per cent of the tobacco going into the stabilization loan program in 1975. Each grower will have to make his own decision in this matter. I believe our customers would be willing to pay a premium price in 1976 for all the tobacco that Georgia growers would be able to produce of the up-stalk leaf from our old line traditional varieties of tobacco. Variety selection by Georgia tobacco growers in 1976 may well determine whether we maintain our position at the top in the field of producing the world's best, fine bodied leaf with flavor and aroma or whether we become just a part of the crowd in the production of flue cured tobacco.
Tax Change
the addition of Medina or Supernate at the manufacturer's recommended rate of application.
Another product called "Seaborn Plus" was evaluated for peanuts at the Southwest Georgia Experiment Station in 1975 by Frank McGill
and Ronald Henning in cooperation with Bobby Moss. Seaborn is essentially ground up seaweed. Results of this experiment are shown in Table 2.
Seaborn Plus applied at the manufacturer's suggested rate did not significantly increase peanut yields.
Other products which have been tested and shown to have no beneficial effects are Soilvita (Soil life), Alinit, Phosphobacterin, Normal Soil, and Farm Builder Biochem.
(Editor's Note: The Georgia Department of Agriculture has received reports during the past year of farmers being sold products which supposedly can be applied to the seed and their beneficial effects will be such that normal fertilizer requirements will not be necessary for the production of that crop. The department once again cautions farmers about buying unrecommended materials, particularly through telephone sales at night and from firms that are not known, established, local businesses.]

found on Georgia farms. This is the
second largest increase in taxes. The report recommends changing all fees to $7.00 per vehicle, regardless of size or use. This recommendation would result in many businesses with large or expensive cars paying less than they now pay, but would place the burden of making up this lost revenue on the two groups least able to afford an increase: the small pick up truck owner, (now paying $5.00) and the small inexpensive car owner, (now paying $5.00). Although the Commissioner agrees certain changes are needed in the old system of assessing and collecting taxes on vehicles in order to alleviate long lines for the tax payer and the extreme burden on the tax collector, Irvin believes the burden
has been misplaced on the two most effected groups who are least able to pay the increase.
"This report," Irvin said, "may well be presented to the coming session of the Georgia Legislature. Farmers with pick up trucks and owners of small inexpensive cars
may want to discuss this matter with their Senators or Representatives.

Ceremony Held
At 4-H Center
The Rock Eagle 4-H Center, Eatonton, was the site for the certification ceremony held recently of the nation's first 4-H Tree Farm. Georgia was chosen for the national dedication ceremony because the state is first in both 4H club enrollment and tree farm acreage.
To be certified as a tree farm, timber land must display effective forest management. America's tree farm system now includes 32,000 tree farmers who manage more than 77 million acres of timber land.

Summer Vegetable,
Melon Production
Georgia's watermelon production increased 4 percent over last year, according to 'the Georgia Crop Reporting Service. Georgia led the Nation in acres of watermelons harvested for the second consecutive year but Texas continued as the leading state on the strength of their much higher yield per acre.
Snapbean production dropped by 13 percent from the two previous years. The production of cabbage for the summer quarter was off 47 percent from last year's large crop. Cantaloupe production was down 7 percent and continued the five-year decline. Also, tomato production was down 18 percent from the same period last year.
Excessive moisture and disease problems were the twp most common complaints received from vegetable growers. Despite these problems, watermelon growers were able to produce 4 percent more than the previous year. Statewide yields at 90 cwt. per acre were equal to 1974, but!
acreage was up 1,000. Rain and disease also hampered
snapbean production with yields well below both 1974 and 1973. The large crop of cabbage last year along with marketing problems contributed to the reduced planted acreage.
