Outstanding Job
Of Development
In the late 1940's need arose for the fertilizer industry to communicate recommendations made by the Extension Service to the farmer through dealers and vice versa. So, in October, 1951, at a meeting in Connor Hall, Athens, The Georgia Plant Food Educational Society was formed, Constitution and By-laws written and adopted; Malcom Rowe was elected first President and J. Cooper Morcock, Jr., first SecretaryTreasurer. Zack Smith, Statesboro, was the first paid member.
Our membership consists of fertilizer manufacturers and dealers,
i material suppliers, and the Uni! versity of Georgia Agriculture Extension Service.
In the mid I 50's the Extension I Service told us the county agents had been out of school so long they needed refresher courses and somehow we raised $8,000 to $10,000 to finance it. In 1957, the Intensified Soil Fertility Program was initiated and in three years Georgia farm income increased by $125,000,000.
(Our guest columnist this week is W. J.
Cook, President, The Georgia Plant Food
Educational Society, Inc., P. 0. Box 1483,
Augusta 30903.)_______________
Frpm 1913 to 1957, the entire Federal Extension Service cost only $150,000,000. The USDA said this program was one of the outstanding jobs of agricultural development in modern America. It was copied in state after state.
Through the years other states have come to our annual meetings to observe so they could organize their Society based on Georgia's. The Texas Delegation tape-recorded the entire proceedings.
Since organizing, we have sponsored all or in part such programs as: Big M Pasture, Master Corn, Profit Picking Cotton, Golden Peanut, 4-H Soil Fertility, Soybeans for Cash, Lime for Profit, and scholarships in Agronomy and Horticulture.
In twenty-four years, we have given about $150,000 for projects to promote Georgia agriculture and increase the use of plant food. We must have done some good because

We plow the fields
And scatter the good seed on the land,
But it is fed and watered By God's almighty hand;
He sends the snow in winter,
The warmth to swell the grain, The breezes and the sunshine, And soft refreshing rain.
We thank thee, then, O Father, For all things bright and good, The seedtime and the harvest, Our life, our health, our food;

Farm Survey Gets Underway
A major farm survey by the Georgia Crop Reporting Service of the U.S. Department of Agriculture set for late November and early December will provide the first clues to 1976 livestock, poultry, and winter wheat production.
Cooperation of farmers to personal interviews and mail questionnaires will lead to reliable crop and livestock estimates. These estimates will help all in agriculture gauge production levels and help maintain an orderly marketing system.
Farmer participation is essential to developing useful crop and livestock estimates.
A ward Presen ted

No gifts have we to offer For all thy love imparts,
But that which thou desirest, Our humble thankful hearts.

George Kessler, Lowndes county agent, has received the Distinguished Extension Worker Award
for 1975. The award was presented at the annual meeting of the
Georgia County Agents Association.

December - Farm
Home Safety Month
we have come from 900,000 tons of fertilizer to 2,000,000 tons of fertilizer with 123,000 less farms.
In our day to day activities, we are competitors, and that is as it should be, but when we meet together we become compatriots all working toward a better Georgia through better Agriculture. There have been some big changes in the. past twenty-four years; it would be nice to be around to see what happens during the next twenty-four years.

Out of the hills of Habersham, Down the valleys of Hall, I hurry amain to reach the plain, Run the rapid and leap the fall, Split at the rock and together again, Accept my bed, or narrow or wide, And flee from folly on every side With a lover's pain to attain the plain Far from the hills of Habersham Far from the valleys of Hall.
Song of the Chattahoochee Sidney Lanier
The Chattahoochee is a river made famous by a poem. There is no better description of the 436 mile Georgia river than the lyrical lines of Sidney Lanier's "Song of the Chattahoochee".
Somewhere in "the hills of Habersham" (as well as Towns, White and Union counties) the Chattahoochee begins. It cuts across Georgia through Atlanta and becomes the state line between Georgia and Alabama at West Point. The Chattahoochee joins the Flint at the intersection of Georgia, Alabama and Florida forming the Apalachicola which flows on to the Gulf of Mexico.
Sidney Lanier was not the first Georgian to think poetically of the Chattahoochee. Georgia's first inhabitants, the Cherokee Indians, named it "river of the painted rocks", or Chat-a-Hotchee. The painted rocks refer to the red and

Dear Editor: Have any of your readers ever made tupelo jelly? The tupelo being so sour made me think it would make a good jelly and so I tried it and have made some beautiful tasting jelly. Every batch I make has
a different taste. I haven't told anybody my secret recipe and no one around here has ever heard of making jelly from the tupelo tree. The jelly is real good but I would like to know if anybody else has ever tried this.

(Osmunda cinnamomea L.)
Regardless of what many people imagine, the cinnamon fern is not a native source for cinnamon spice. It was so named because of . the cinnamon-colored fertile fronds peculiar to this species.
The fern leaves or fronds are separate from the cinnamon-stick fertile fronds, but both are about three feet high making this one of the tallest and largest ferns native to Georgia.
Cinnamon ferns grow only in damp places, but they are widely distributed in Georgia.
Rjo Foot?
(Osmunda regalis L.)
The royal fern is the largest of our native ferns with an average height of six to seven feet.
The reasoning behind the name "royal" relates to the crown of fertile sporangia at the end of the frond. The appearance of this conspicuous brown cluster has led to another common name, "flowering fern".
The royal fern is not hard to find in Georgia nor is it hard to grow. It flourishes in poorly drained situations such as swamps and along the banks of stagnant streams but can also be found growing in damp woodlands.

Please identify this plant. It came up in my garden and looked like a marigold so I transplanted it to the flower bed. Now it's six feet tall. Is it something it "shouldn't be"? Mrs. W. P., Watkinsville
The plant is in the same genus as the common Marigold. What you have is just a healthy flower.

My camellia bush is about 30 years old and had seed pods this year. I

opened them up and now need to know how to plant the seed. M.B.,

Adairsville

Camellias grown from seed will not come true or be like the parent

plant. You can plant the seed in a pot. The seed should be barely

covered. In order for the seed to germinate, they need some cold

weather. Either place the seed in the refrigerator for two months and

then plant in your pot or place your pot with seed in the garage or barn

for the whiter. Seed from the refrigerator will germinate if the pot is

placed in a southern-exposed window. Seed in pots from the barn will

germinate in the spring.

Can you please tell me what is causing this? Many of the leaves on my pear tree are like this. F. H., Palmetto
We asked Dr. Norman McGlohon, Head of the Extension Plant Pathology Department in Athens to look over your leaves. He advises that there is no disease present but your tree is sick. Could be a nutritional deficiency [even trees have to have balanced diets] or something dumped near the tree. Contact your county agent for advice on having a soil test done.

Are the little potato seedlets on the enclosed vine poisonous? It is beautiful but we have grandchildren and wouldn't want them to get poisoned. Mrs. D- M., Lavonia.
It is commonly known as Chinese potato and cinnamon vine considered edible.

I need instructions for cleaning fresh tripe. I put it in the freezer to keep. J. S., Atlanta
Defrost and immediately wash the surfaces. Place it in a container of water and heat to 150 degrees F. You may place a small amount of household lime or baking soda in the water to help clean the tripe. It should remain in the water for 20 to 30 minutes or until the lining membrane begins to loosen so that it can be completely removed. Drain, rinse either by scrubbing or using a brush to remove the mucous lining, rinse again and cook. You can repackage and freeze any extra.

Chaffahoochee
(Continued From Page 1)
pink boulders often found in the upper parts of the river.
Georgia's development was greatly influenced by the Chattahoochee. During the Revolution our backside was securely protected by friendly Indians along the Chattahoochee who discouraged British invaders from the Gulf.
Riverboat traffic in the early 1800's was heavy and exciting on the river. The Chattahoochee permitted access to Columbus and other south Georgia towns where cotton cargo was loaded for delivery to New Orleans and export to Europe. During the War Between the States, trade and traffic came to an abrupt halt when Federal forces sealed the entrance to the river at the Gulf.
Although navigation experts claim that the Chattahoochee could make Atlanta a "port city", the cost of such engineering has been prohibitive. Because part of Georgia is built on a plateau, the Chattahoochee in Atlanta is 736 feet above sea level whereas in Columbus it is only 190 feet above sea level. The problems are obvious.
Whether the Chattahoochee will ever be developed to this extent remains to be seen. For now, the Chattahoochee provides 550 miles of recreational shoreline at Lake Sidney Lanier; it generates billions of kilowatts of electricity in power plants along its banks; and it supplies water to all the cities it passes including Atlanta.
Certainly the Chattahoochee is a river of the future and a river of memories and a river that inspires a poem of beauty for all who see it.
