Never before has the significance of using Angus cattle meant so much to the livestock producer. With the tight economic bite on everyone, especially the cattleman, the most efficient animal has become a must.
The commercial cattleman seeking to find the most consistent pro-
fducer of good I doing, efficent aniimals has turned I to the use of f Angus bulls. Fast I gaining cattle with nigh yield ]carcasses means dollars in the (bank for the pro* ducer.
(Our guest columnist this week is Jim Vogt, Executive Director, Georgia Angus Association, P.O. Box 593, Perry 31069.)
The influx of the many exotic breeds of cattle has tempted many breeders who might not have been as efficient in their management programs as they might, to turn to these highly touted animals as an answer to their own self created problems. Condemnation of these other breeds is not my intent; only to point out that they are not the answer to a lot of mismanagement problems; they usually compound these problems. I believe that the individual producer has to determine his course of action, and then apply every intelligent means of making these animals work into as productive and profitable a business as possible.
Let's face the fact that the American consumer, although complaining about the high costs of retail cuts, wants a tender flavorful cut of beef. Angus have stood the test of time as to the consistent, efficient production of high quality meat.
I have dwelt on the commercial producer and the finished product but I am not forgetting an all important segment of the livestock industry the seedstock producer
the purebred breeder. This purebred breeder has spent much time and money in the development and production of quality seedstock, that will in turn do this most efficient job for the commercial man,
These purebred breeders realize

Poultry Club

Being Formed

A poultry club is being formed in Columbus to serve breeders and

fanciers within a 100 mile radius of

Columbus. Plans are to provide a

forum where breeders in the area

can get together monthly to discuss problems they might have and to gain expertise in breeding and ex-

hibiting poultry, bantams, ducks,

geese and turkeys.

Additionally, spring and fall shows have been planned to promote the raising and exhibiting

of the fancy and to present awards

to breeders of championship stock.

For further information write

Dan Miller, P.O. Box 1459, Columbus 31902.

H

Clinic

Chapter 17 of the United Professional Horsemen's Association will offer a horse clinic to the public free of charge November 1. The clinic will be held at Hide-A-Way Farms, College Park, beginning at 9:30 a.m. For additional information, contact Hide-A-Way Farms, 404/461-9814 or 404/768-9061.

Ed. Dairy History

Now Being Prepared

The Agricultural Commodity Commission for Milk has requested Professor H. B. Henderson to assist in preparing a "History of Dairying in Georgia". He is interested in receiving information about dairy farms which have made a contribution to the development of the dairy industry in Georgia.
Many of our dairy herds have been sold during the past decade, but their influence on dairying in Georgia will be felt for years to come. If you have information about dairy herds in your community which you feel should be included in such a history, send it to Professor H. B. Henderson, University of Georgia, L-P Building, Athens, 30602.
Seedlings Available

The Georgia Forestry Commission still has tree seedlings available for order by Georgia landowners. For order forms, a list of trees and prices, contact your local Forestry unit.

Get ready for fall festivals and Halloween with Georgia products. Decorate your Georgia pumpkin, hang your Georgia Indian corn, candy your Georgia apples and have Georgia peanuts ready for trick or treaters. All of these are good Georgia products, plentiful at this time.
Two 4g Scientists
Honored Recently
The 1975 Edward W. Browning Award for improvement of food sources one of the highest awards available to an agricultural scientist was presented to Dr. Glenn W. Burton, Alumni Foundation Distinguished Professor of agronomy in the University of Georgia College of Agriculture recently.
Also, Dr. Ray O. Hammons, supervisory research geneticist and research leader of the U.S.D.A.'s Agricultural Research Service at the University, was presented as a recently-elected fellow of the American Society of Agronomy. Both are stationed at the University's Coastal Plain Experiment Station, Tifton.
Seed Law Amendment
Confusing To Farmers
Due to an amendment, "Title 5", of the federal seed law, there seems to be some misunderstanding of farmers and local seedsmen who sell seed of certain varieties of cotton, lima bean, soybean and wheat. Special protection has been granted to the owners of these varieties under the Plant Variety Protection Act (PVPA).
Clyde Edwards, chief seed law enforcement officer in the USDA's Agricultural Marketing Service said at present, there are 66 varieties of cotton, lima bean, soybean and wheat that are specially protected. The owners of these varieties are the holders of the certificates of protection issued for the varieties under the PVPA.
While the PVPA was signed into law in late 1970, the "Title 5" amendment was added to the

Number 44
Forages Change
Beef Production The beef industry has changed dramatically in the past two years, the most notable change being the shift from heavy grain feeding to a greater reliance on forages. Since some forages can be produced here throughout most of the year, the long-term prospects for a profitable beef production in Georgia and the Southeast are good, even though the economics of the near future are not bright.
However, to capitalize fully upon our forage production will require a more healthy marketing system
(First of a two-part article by Dr. E. M.
Sudweeks, Assistant Professor Animal Scien-
ce, University of Georgia College of
Agriculture Experiment Stations, Georgia
Station, Experiment 30212.)
and the use of sound management programs in forage and livestock production. While marketing is of prime importance, I would like to discuss the management aspects of livestock and forage production.
Forage production practices which provide some year-round grazing are usually based upon grazing bermuda grass or bahia grass pastures from May through September, and winter annuals such as oats, wheat, rye or ryegrass from late November to May. Additional grazing can also be obtained from fescue in cool seasons or sorghum and millets in summer.
Overseeding of winter annuals into bermuda grass or bahia grass sod is a practice which extends the productive capacity of the land. In addition, it is a good practice to produce some stored forages in the form of hay or silage since forages will not produce equally well over the course of a year and stored feeds can be used to supplement grazing, if necessary. Successful production under any forage program requires strict adherence to planting, fertilizing and grazing recommendations.
With a sound forage program, cattle can be handled to fit the production traits of the land. The most popular livestock program in the Southeast is the cow-calf operation with backgrounding and grass + grain finishing programs becoming more widely used. Next week more on backgrounding and finishing programs.
Energy Saver
With the high cost of electricity, use more florescent rather than incandescent lighting. Florescent is about four times more efficient.

we

Dear Editor:

We have just spent another disappointing day

driving to a fair hoping to see animals, farm

equipment and other exhibits of interest to farm,

rural and agricultural people.

We started farming in 1972 and we are looking for

someplace someone can go to see a manufacturer's

or dealer's exhibit of farm equipment of all varieties.

Pictures or descriptions in catalogs are not

adequate. We have gone to the Macon fair and

Southeastern fair, both of which are merely mid-

ways with a few animals and exhibits to allow the

use of the word fair rather than carnival.

If any of your readers know of exhibits of the

variety we are interested in, please post it

prominently in the BULLETIN or write us directly.

I am very sad to learn the days of the county and

state fairs I remember so well as a young girl and

so important to rural people in days past seem to

be gone forever.

Hybrid lilies are relative newcomers to American flower gardens. 50 years ago very few were grown in this country because the bulbs had to be shipped in from Europe and the Orient. Unlike other bulbs, lilies did not produce satisfactory results after long weeks in transit.
American horticulturists had been interested in hybridizing lilies for years but did not concentrate on the project as long as other flower bulbs, i.e. tulips, narcissus, etc., were available and produced such rewarding results.
However, during the early 1940s when bulb shipping came to a screeching halt, American growers had to concentrate on developing hybrid lilies from native plants. The results were phenomenal and a new era of bulb research and gardening came into focus.
Lilies are not new to this world however. They are found among the earliest records of civilization. Reference is made to the madonna lily over 4000 years ago; pottery from the Island of Crete is covered with pictures of lilies; Greek art illustrates women offering lilies at an altar; and the bulbs have even been found tucked away in Egyptian mummy cases.
Like other spring-flowering bulbs, lilies need to be planted in the fall. They are easy to grow and lend an ancient dignity to even the most informal garden.

Efficient Cattle
(Continued From.Page 1) the importance of unity, especially in times of economic crisis when everything seems to be going out and very little coming in return. It is difficult to instill much enthusiasm when conditions are like this but with having an edge like ANGUS cattle on your side, the picture is not .nearly as bleak. Sound management programs by the individual breeder along with other enthusiastic breeders of Angus cattle can make a world of difference in the future.

Any small fresh apple that has a solid quality will make a excellent doll head. Keep in mind that the apple will shrink at least one half of its original size.
First peel the apple, then with a sharp knife cut small slits for eyes, nose and mouth. To make the face more interesting, insert small beads, seeds, etc. into the freshly cut slits. These ornaments will be held in place as the apple dries around them. Also, cut triangular pieces for hands and let them dry on absorbent paper. If you want to inhibit a very dark coloration, dip the apples in lemon juice.
Now insert two pieces of lightweight wire into the bottom of the apple. This will form the main body and legs of the figure. Another wire can be attached later to form the arms. Tie some string to the wire legs and hang the doll in a warm, dry location where there is good circulation of air. It should take between ten days to two weeks to complete the drying process. As moisture evaporates, you will notice how Mother Nature sculptures each head with its own fascinating facial expression. No two will look alike.
To create a lifelike complexion on the face and hands, lightly apply some rouge or lipstick on these areas. After the coloring is dry, apply several coats of clear nail polish to produce a hard outer finish.
While the apple heads are drying, creative costumes can be made. Let your imagination travel into the time zones. Cotton and paper can be used to stuff the figures to give the clothes more shape.
In the past, creating apple dolls has given many generations hours of pleasure and recognition. It is simple and fun for the whole family and the needed materials can be easily found around the house. Create your own heirlooms.
Harvest Time For Golden Pumpkins
Now is the time for the fall harvest of plump golden pumpkins. Not only can the pumpkin be enjoyed by children in creating funny and scarey faces for Halloween, but it can be easily prepared for the whole family to enjoy.
It is not necessary to cut off the hard rind/ and cut into small pieces before cooking. Do it the easy way by cutting into halves or quarters and baking in an 'oven cooking bag'. It is not necessary to add water. Time of cooking and nutrients are saved.
Wash the rind well, scrape out the seeds and place in a cooking bag. Close tightly with a twist tie, make several slits in the top and bake until the pumpkin piece collapses. Let cool, then scrape the "meat" from rind. Half of a 10-inch pumpkin bakes in about 45 minutes at 350 degrees F. and makes six to eight cups of pumpkin puree.

Seed Law Amendment
(Continued From Page 1}
Federal Seed Act. The main thrust of "Title 5" is that specially protected varieties cannot be generally sold by variety name unless the seed is certified. Neither can the seed be legally sold under a different variety name.
Some farmers and some seed dealers stand a good chance of getting into trouble through lack of knowledge about "Title 5". It appears they bought seed of some of the 66 varieties last year, planted and harvested it, and saved some of the seed. Now they are planning to sell it by variety name as uncertified seed, which would be an illegal sale.
As the USDA Agricultural Marketing Service learns of this, individual contacts are made, but this is a slow process. Farmers and seedsmen should contact the Georgia Department of Agriculture or their county agent to determine whether the varieties they have on hand are specially protected varieties and can be legally sold by variety name only as a class of certified seed.
Further information on the requirements of seed laws and the sale of specially protected seed is available from the Georgia Department of Agriculture.
