Georgia's Big Money Crop
EPA Head Holds
Ag Leaders Meet
Last week, as head of the Plant Industry Committee of the National Assodiation of State Departments of Agriculture, I was called to Washington to meet with Russell, Train, Administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency.
Although I had to rearrange my schedule to attend this unprecedent-
ed meeting, I wan| ted to go in order to represent the commissioners of agriculture and I Georgians in ex| pressing the opinion that EPA must be more practical in its approach to agricultural pesticide restrictions.
According to Train, the purpose of the meeting was to get a grass roots feeling from the nation's agricultural leaders in regard to how EPA has been handling pesticide registrations as well as administration of the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide and Rodenticide Act (FIFRA). Under this Act and EPA regulations, all pesticide users including farmers, must be certified as being qualified in the use of restricted materials.
I was pleased, in the give and take session, to have the opportunity to strongly advise and encourage EPA to develop more scientific evidence before placing new restrictions on pesticides and to allow individual states to have more input into the administration of FIFRA.
What will come from the meeting remains to be seen as EPA has taken a rather dogmatic and bureaucratic viewpoint in making and enforcing its regulations in the past. However, I do'think the meeting was worthwhile and served a useful purpose in clearing the air (at least to some extent) between EPA and
agriculture. Although I will continue to ex-
press my opposition to many EPA procedures until concrete results are obtained, I strongly believe that such meetings are beneficial and that it is through this type of give and take that Georgia was able to have the first plan in the nation accepted by EPA for implementation of FIFRA on a state-wide basis.
BARBECUING CHICKEN? To tell when a bird is done, grasp a leg and twist it. If it turns easily in the socket, the chicken is ready.
An old fashioned apple press will convert fresh fruit into cider at Stone Mountain Park during the 7th Annual Yellow Daisy Festival activities September 12-14. Activities scheduled include a crafts show, art exhibit, flea market, bluegrass music contest, flower show, field events competition and an old fashioned barbeque.
Home Canners warned
Home canners are being advised not to experiment with canning lid substitutes. Due to the difficulty in obtaining new lids, many people are reportedly trying different methods using old lids. Use of these could result in food which would be unsafe to eat.
Seed Advertisers
We are currently updating our files of seed report. Please read the instructions under Agricultural to find out if you have a current seed report. If not, you must have your seed tested to advertise. Send a minimum of 400 seed to the Georgia Seed Lab, Agriculture Building, 19 Hunter St., SW, Atlanta 30334, for testing.
Now Being Harvested
Peanut: From Feed To Food
This week, more than 21 thousand Georgia peanut farmers are busy har-
vesting the 1975 crop of "goober peas" which should total more than
800,000,000 tons by October 1.
Peanuts have been known to man
for centuries; in fact the origin is
often disputed but historians
generally agree that the first to grow
and eat the ground pea were the
South America Indians around 1500
AD.
It was not until 125 years ago that
the economic importance of peanuts
was realized when a Frenchman
began importing them from West
Africa to crush for oil.
Checking Poultry Feed A Cooperative Effort
Legend says that Southerners did not eat the ground pea until during the War Between the States when hungry soldiers discovered they were good when boiled.
The Feed Council of the Georgia Poultry Federation and the Extension Poultry Science Department of the University of Georgia are cooperating in several projects relating to feed quality control, according to Council Chairman Georgia Deadwyler and Federation President Lee Arrendale.
In order to obtain accurate current nutrient values for various feed ingredients, several council members are assisting Dr. John Shutze and the Extension Poultry Department in the establishment of
-Now, however, the once lowly goober crop has an economic impact of one and one fourth billion dollars on Georgia's economy annually and
accounted for 320 million dollars of farmer income in 1974.
Including the 21,500 peanut farmers in Georgia, more than 100,000 Georgians derive their livelihood directly from the peanut.
Last year a record crop of 831,268,000 tons was harvested in Georgia. This year's crop is expected to be almost as big with approximately 3,100 pounds per
acre forecast.
(Continued On Page 8)
Along with the Agricultural
Commodity Commission for Peanuts,
the Georgia Bankers Association
will be promoting the peanut the
week of September 15-20. Par-
ticipating banks will be giving away
peanut goodies and literature.
At the close of this year's tobacco season, Aulbert Brannen, Sr., [center rear] will have completed almost a half century of working with the gold leaf. Mr. Brannen, with his sons Bob [second from left, rear] and Aulbert Jr., [right rear], and five grandsons operate five tobacco warehouses in Statesboro. Mr. Brannen began his career with the gold leaf in 1927 rolling trucks, weighing
and as an assistant floor man.

Dear Editor: I was so impressed and so very much amused when I read Mr. Carl
Brack's letter, along with picture, about how the birds were exterminating flies from one of our most valued animals, the cow.
Thus, not only am I taking this opportunity to thank you for printing the letter, and to thank Mr. Brack for writing it, I wish to send along my own versified version. Home health guides Recommend insecticides To chase and kill the flies. But it seems to me Don't you agree In order to save cow's eyes? That birds of prey. And not a spray. Is how to save the cow. And make the fly peckin' starling The dairyman's barnyard darling. Pray keep him on the poor cow's head, And out of my seeded flower bed!

Eat a ripe persimmon and you are in for a sweet and delicious taste treat. Eat one that's not quite ready and your mouth is going to pucker up like a prune. Ripe persimmons can be enjoyed straight off the tree, cooked, made into pudding, syrup or even a beverage.
Early settlers roasted the large seeds as a coffee substitute and recently research has revealed that the leaves have an exceptionally high content of Vitamin C. These leaves, either green or dried, make a fairtasting tea.
DeSoto was probably the first European to enjoy persimmons. Captain John Smith also tried it but apparently got a fruit not quite ripe for he wrote, "If it be not ripe it will draw a man's mouth awry with much torment."
Persimmon trees are easy to identify when in fruit but many trees never produce fruits, since like hollies the stamen-bearing and pistel bearing flowers are on separate trees.
Persimmon fruits are somewhat flattened, roundish berries. They start off orange and red turn blackishpurple. The pulpy sweet flesh contains from one to eight seeds.
Persimmons ripen from August through November depending on variety.

.Checking Poultry Feed
(Continued From Page 1) a data bank.
This has been accomplished by each participating feed mill transmitting its laboratory analyses reports, obtained from routine sampling, to the University.
To further provide assurance that feed ingredients coming into Georgia are within the allowed chemical residue tolerances an extensive monitoring program is conducted. More than 2,000 samples were analyzed this past year. About 97% of the samples collected were within acceptable limits.

THE MARKET BULLETIN
Straight Line
My Uncle gets your paper. I'm 11 years old and want to raise some chickens. How do I tell baby hens from roosters? T. L., Atlanta.
You should have included your name and address with only about a thousand letters a week it is a little hard to answer every one in the paper, which means your answer takes longer. Dr. John V. Shutze, Head of the Extension Poultry Science Department at the University of Georgia gave this advice. If you are interested in starting a small backyard flock it is advisable to contact a reputable hatchery that is a member of the Poultry Improvement Plan which means their breeders are tested for various diseases.
Chicks can be bought sexed at day of age or straight run. The sexed chicks cost more money but are cheaper in the long run because it is several weeks before you can determine the chick's sex. Very special training is required to sex day-old chicks and only a few people can do this. However, if you buy straight run chicks, by about four weeks you can easily pick out the roosters because of their increased comb size and feather shape. The male chicken has a longer, slender, pointed feather as opposed to a rounded feather of the female chick. The comb develops between 16 and 20 weeks of age on female chicks.
In addition to contacting a hatchery and obtaining day-old sexed chicks you may wish to consider buying twenty week old started pullets that are ready to lay. The hatchery or county agent's office can provide you with contacts for started pullets.
If you need information concerning management practices, types of equipment, feeds, etc., please contact your county agent.

My last Bulletin finally got here - late - and I was so glad to see Straight Line. It's one of my favorite features. The lady with the problem of the stinkbugs invading her blueberries reminded me of my problem. Once a year I have an invasion of "pests" from Valdosta and they completely clean me out of my stock of fermented corn mash which I keep for medicinal purposes. Any suggestions? J.N., Wormleysburg, Pa.
Your Bulletin was probably late this past week because the people at the post office wanted some good reading material and read your paper. We have a suggestion mix pokeweed with your corn mash prior to the invasion of the
"pests" from Valdosta not only will it cure you of pests but will guarantee
they will never return. Now, sir, we strongly advise that you use this on
pests ONLY as it could be detrimen*ta*l *to*friendships it's poisonous.
Will you please give 'me the best remedy to wash a dog in who has the mange? J.C., Moultrie.
Before starting any treatment, please take your dog to a veterinarian. The problem could stem from a number of things including a fungus or bacterial
infection rather than from parasitic mites. Use whatever he suggests ac-
cording to instructions as it takes s*ev*e*ra*l treatments in most instances.
I have what I call a sunflower daisy looking large center and yellow
petals. The whole flower is as large as a nine inch pie plate or larger; How do I
save the seed for planting next year? Mrs. G.S.. Augusta
Sunflowers are normally about 10% self fertile. If you have only one plant
the heads [flowers] may contain many sterile seeds. The fruits may be full if
any other sunflowers are available for pollination. Some of the wild types can
provide the pollen necessary to produce filled fruits. The seeds should be
saved as most vegetable seeds. Harvest after the fruits [seeds] mature. The
leaves and floral bracts will normally turn brown and die before the seeds
completely mature. If you delay harvest too long the seeds will fall out or birds
and rodents will eat them. Cut the mature head on a dry day and place it in a
cool dry place. When the seeds begin to fall out the remainder can be
physically extracted. Continue to keep them spread out in a dry place so that
they will not go through a heat. When completely dry, store in a sealed con-
tainer in the refrigerator. If used for planting, add some insecticide
[Malathion or Sevin dust]

Can you identify the enclosed leaf? The distinctive fragrance makes me think it might be an herb. W. T., Athens
It appears to be Chenopodium ambrosioides L. [Mexican-Tea or Wormsed]. In Georgia Mexican-tea is often found as a weed in pastures and waste
ground. It is related to and often found in habitats similar to Lamh's-quarter. ****
I am interested in building a smoke house similar to those found in your part of the country as good smoked meats ar hard to get in this area. J.S., Bonita, Calif.
We are extremely pleased to know that meats cured and smoked Georgia style are appreciated to the Western boundaries of our country. In order that you might have the most expertise advise in Georgia, we suggest that you contact Dr. Jim Christian, Head of the Meat Science Department, Georgia
Cooperative Extension Service, Athens. ****

I bought some plants last year to be dill. What are they? E.D., Kathleen Marigolds. You should contact the person you bought them from for a refund
of replacement. Everyone makes a *m*is*ta*ke occasionally.
Please identify the enclosed insect and give information. Mrs. J.H., Smyrna
By the time it got to us, it was beyond recognition. Please send the next one in blotter type material such as a paper towel. Do Not send samples in aluminum foil or plactic as these materials tend to retain moisture which speeds up the decay ing process.
