Forest Farmers Assn. Unique
Forest Farmers Association is a unique grassroots organization of timberland owners, and primarily small owners in 15 southern states. It was established in Valdosta, Ga. in 1941, and is the only organization of its type in the country.
Over the years Forest Farmers
Association has become increasingly known as the voice of southern timber growers. It currently has a membership of 2100, and represents
ownership of approximately 25 million acres. Small to medium-sized non-industrial owners, however, continue to constitute the vast majority of members and are the backbone of the organization.
The association is a full service organization which encourages better management of southern forestlands through education and legislative action. Its. education program is fostered primarily through its monthly Forest Farmer magazine. The

magazine covers techniques of
growing and harvesting of timber
crops, while keeping growers alert to
market conditions, sources of
professional assistance, tax matters,
etc.
Forest Farmer Manual is also
published by the association. It is a
basic down-to-earth guidebook for
timber growers, issued every other
year. The 1975 edition is priced at
$8. The Manual assembles in
laymen's language the vital in-
formation needed by tree farmers. It
covers the what, when, where and
how of forest management in the
South
sources of professional
assistance, how to plan a timber har-
vest, latest timber tax information, a
detailed list of timber markets, and
various other information.
The association advances forest
management by insuring that govern-
mental proposals fully consider in-
terests of southern forest landowners.
Forest Farmers Association and its
executive vice president are
registered to lobby before the U.S.
Congress. Over the years, association
representatives have presented
testimony at approximately 100
Congressional and Executive
hearings on matters affecting forest
farming. In so doing, the association
has been a major force in protecting
and advancing the interests of timber

Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin welcomes growers at the Tifton Tobacco Market opening day sale.
Tobacco Bullet in
Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin and the Georgia Peach queen, Linda Mountjoy of McRae, received the peach proclamation from Governor George Busbee declaring July as "Peach Month" in the peach state. The signing of the proclamation was followed by an old fashion peach ice cream churning on the Capitol steps for the general assembly.
Commission
Has New Manager
Robert N. Howell of Gainesville has been named as the new executive secretary and general manager of the Georgia Egg Commission.
The Georgia Egg Commission serves the public and egg producers with promotion, research, and education.
As THE BULLETIN went to press Thursday, July 10, the U.S. Flue Cured Tobacco Advisory Committee, meeting in Raleigh set the opening date for the Middle Belt for July 29 and the Old Belt for Aug. 5. This allowed the committee to grant the Type 14 Belt including Georgia and Florida to continue to sale tobacco at the accelerated rate through July 3 1.
The accelerated rate of sale allows 18,524,832 pounds of tobacco to be sold each week, whereas the basic rate limits sales to approximately 10,000,000 pounds per week. The committee also provided that the accelerated rate which was to last only through the first two weeks of sales to continue until August 11, at which time Georgia markets will sale at the basic rate.
Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin was pleased with the announcement.
Peanut Workshop
A peanut harvesting and curing workshop will be held July 29 at Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College. The workshop will provide an opportunity for peanut growers and commercial dryer operators and owners to receive instruction and share ideas relative to peanut curing quality.
For additional information on the' workshop, contact your county agent.

Tobacco Sales
Underway
In Georgia
Tobacco sales in the Georgia flue cured belt opened for business last week, July 8, with prices running slightly under the first two days in 1974.
Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin said that although the opening had been discouraging, buyers have assured him and tobacco farmers that the price will strengthen as soon as upper and middle stalks come on the auction floor.
Volume of sales have been down considerably due to the reduced amount of sets of buyers from 18 to 12 on our markets this year. However, the longer market season will give farmers an opportunity to sell their tobacco.
Another discouraging note on the first day or two of sales was the increased amount of tobacco going into government loan.
Irvin said, however, that he is optimistic that things will get a lot better and Georgia tobacco farmers will end up with a good over all season.
Many grades were bringing one to six cents a pound more than last year already; however, due to the poor quality of some offerings the average price was down.
As for so much tobacco going into government loan, Irvin said this is partly due to the 15% increase in allotments this year set by Secretary Butz and U.S.D.A.
Irvin had questioned the increased allotment at the time tor this very reason. He pointed out to Butz that there is a very thin line between enough' and too much. Farmers in Georgia already know only too well what can happen when there's a surplus of any crop.
Agrirama Needs
Old Schoolhouse
A small pre-1900 one-room schoolhouse is needed by the Georgia Agrirama to be placed in the village section of the 1870-1899 living museum complex.
The schoolhouse should be about 24' x 30'. The building will be moved to the Agrirama site in Tifton,
Any information about such a schoolhouse which could be donated to the Agrirama should include a picture of the building, the approximate dimensions and the name of the person to contact in inquiry. Please send the information to Dr. Frank King, Georgia Agrirama Development Authority, P. O. Box Q, Tifton, Georgia 31794 or phone 912/3863344.

THE MARKET BULLETIN

ItfteM^
Dear Editor: I have a fig tree that is as high as my head now. I have to buy pies to get the plates to hang in it to keep the birds out. I am only sorry I didn't buy three when I bought this one. You see I am not lucky enough to have two or three acres. So I'll be content to be a city farmer. In the rest of my yard I have eight tomato plants and three packages of okra seed which are up and going like mad. And for the blooms, they are as pretty as any flower. For something really pretty, just put in a few purple cabbage plants. It will all help out on your groceries when you put it on the table.

Dear Editor: Should anyone be interested in the butterfly weed (the correct name in seed catalogs is Asclepias), it is a true perennial and comes back year after year, growing bushier and prettier each year. I ordered the seeds. It takes about two years to get started. Plant the seeds in a seed box and transplant later in a permanent place. I ordered my seed from Park Seed Company, Greenwood, S.C. 29646.

MOM'S CINNAMON ROLLS makes about 2 doz. rolls
2 pkgs. dry yeast or 1 cake compressed yeast
1/2 c. granulated sugar 1 t. salt 1 c. milk, scalded
2 eggs, beaten 1 t. lemon juice 4 c. all purpose flour 1/2 t. mace or nutmeg 1/3 c. margarine or
shortening, melted
Scald the milk, add the sugar and salt to the hot milk, stir and cool to lukewarm. Place in Irg. bowl, add the yeast, eggs, lemon juice, spice and half of the flour. Beat until smooth, stir in the melted shortening and the remaining flour.
Turn out on a floured board and knead until smooth and elastic, about 10 min., use 1/2 c. additional flour for kneading. Sweet rolls must be soft and too much flour kneaded in will make the finished rolls "bready" instead of delicate, light and flaky.
Round up into a smooth ball, place in a greased bowl, turn once to bring the greased side to the top, cover with a wax paper and a clean towel and let rise in a warm place (about 86 degrees) until dbl. in bulk, about 2 hours.
Dough is then ready to be shaped into various kinds of sweet rolls. Divide the raised dough in half, roll each half in a circle, spread with melted or soft margarine. Cover each circle with granulated sugar, sprinkle with cinnamon. Roll up, like a jelly roll, tuck ends in, cut 2 inch or 3 inch slices. Place in a greased pan, let rise double in bulk, bake at 350 degrees about 20 minutes or until lightly brown.
Frost while warm with a mixture of powdered sugar, milk and vanilla.

Sunflowers are part of our American heritage. The Indians are responsible for discovering the versatility of the plant. They used it for dye, medicine and food.
You might say that sunflowers aided in the exploration of our country since many adventuresome expeditions would not have survived without this emergency food. The Lewis and Clark Expedition might have terminated on the Missouri River if they had not witnessed the Indians making meal from the sunflower seeds.
The Indians discovered that the crushed seeds when boiled left an extremely nutritious oil that could be skimmed from the surface and used in cooking. It was also our country's first "greasy kid's stuff" hair oil.
Medicinally, boiled sunflower roots were reported to extract the venom of snakebite and make a good liniment for sore muscles.
Black and purple dyes can be made the seeds as well as a brilliant yellow dye from the plant itself.
The wild sunflower can be seen growing for some distance since it is always a tall plant. Most seek the open fields and perish at the thought of shady woodlands.
Sunflower seeds are not only nutritious but delicious as well. Break the seeds up with a rolling pin, hammer or the like. Scatter the seeds, shells and all in a large container of water. Stir vigorously. The kernels will fall to the bottom and the shells will float. Dry the nuts in an oven pan and roast if desired.

growers. The association's legislative objectives include retention of capital gains treatment of timber, expanded research in insect and disease control, strengthening of forest fire protection, and promoting federal cost-sharing for management by small private timberland owners.
Not content to merely react to the proposals of others, Forest Farmers Association was one of the two original co-sponsors of "The South's Third Forest" study. This study was undertaken to determine how the South had attained its favorable timber position over the past several decades, and how favorable trends could be continued. It stimulated enactment of the Forestry Incentives Program (FIP), a $15 million landowner costshare program to encourage tree planting and timber development.

Livestock Dealer
Violates Ga. Law
A Georgia livestock dealer recently was cited by the Georgia Department of Agriculture for diverting swine to his farm from a livestock auction market. The swine were discovered when a Department inspector visited the farm of Billy H. Pullen, Kite, and found some hogs marked with yellow paint indicating that they were to be sold for direct slaughter only.
This is in violation of Georgia Department of Agriculture regulations requiring that any swine sold through a regularly scheduled sale must be sold for slaughter only. All feeder and breeder sales are permitted sales and held separately. The reason for this ruling dates back to a 1968 statewide quarantine imposed on the movement of swine due to hog cholera. Before Georgia was declared hog-cholera free, the disease was costing the state and Georgia farmers hundreds of thousands of dollars annually. The ruling helps Georgia maintain its "free" status.
Pullen was fined $300.
Straight Line I
Would you kindly enlighten me in your most educational column about the Brazilian potatoes that I see advertised? Are they edible? How big are they? What are they worth by the peck or bushel? I am at the stage of looking for a nice flat spot on a wall to beat my head against trying to uncover this intriguing vegetable. E. M., Toledo, Ohio.
According to the potato man, it is edible, generally very small in size and the tuber is harder than commercial varieties of potatoes. If you are going to consider purchasing one of these potatoes to plant, please do so with the idea that this is an oddity and should never be used in place of commercial varieties. We just don't know what a bushel would sell for as we don't know anyone who sells them by the bushel.

I need some information on this plant. It comes up in my flowers and when I pull it, my hand stings all day very painful. M. M., Dalton.
The leaves are from one of the nettles. It is probably Urtica dioica L. (stinging nettle), which has opposite leaves. However, it could be Laportea Canadensis (L.) Weddell (wood nettle) which also stings but has alter nate leaves. Stinging nettle has stinging hairs on the stem and leaves. These hairs work on the same principle as a small syringe. To prevent the sting, wear gloves when working with any of the nettles. The stinging can normally be reduced by the same remedies that reduce the itching of mos quito bites. To eradicate this weed, you must dig up all of the under ground stems (Rhizomes). Nettles reproduce by seed and Rhizomes, but their spread is normally by Rhiz*om* e*s.
I have a creature that looks like half turkey and half guinea. Several people have looked at it but no one knows what it is. It is between 3 and 4 years old. We don't know if it is a male or female. It has never laid an egg nor has never tried to breed with turkeys, guineas, or chickens. It is very ugly and funny looking. It sort of favors a turkey but tries to holler like a guinea, but really doesn't favor either one. H. D., Rome.
We asked Mr. Charlie Fleming, Director of the Georgia State Museum of Science and Industry to help on this one. He has never heard of nor seen any such animal. But, please send him a picture. He checked with the zoo folks as to the possibility of cross-breeding the two birds, and al though it is an extreme rarity, there have been reported cases.

I plant vegetables and they come up fine then, something pulls them up and leaves them laying all over the ground. What is doing this and what could be causing it? H. G., Dallas.
Sounds like birds. Try hanging tin or aluminum plates or foil from various high points around your garden in an effort to scare off the birds. You might also -- someone suggested this -- place brush and limbs in your garden to prevent birds from getting to your plants.
I have a large vegetable garden with enough Irish potatoes to last the winter. How do I keep them from sprouting? E. J., Bowdon.
The potato man says to try "MH-30" three weeks prior to bloom to prevent sprouting during storage. Also, you might use "Sprout-Nip" on the tubers to control sprouting. These are available at garden centers or nurseries.

Shifts Indicated
For Ga. Crops
Major shifts are indicated for some Georgia crops from last year. According to the Georgia Crop Reporting Service, only about half as much cotton was planted this year while soybean acreage will be expanded by 25 percent when planting is complete. Cotton plantings, at 210,000 acres, were about 10,000 acres more than had been planned at the time of the March 1, 1975 Planting Intentions report while soybean plantings, at 1,290,000 acres, shrank about 50,000 acres from earlier intentions.
Corn plantings also declined from the early season intentions but about 2,020,000 acres were planted 1 percent more than a year ago. About 125,000 acres of the total corn acreage* was indicated to be planted to white corn varieties the same as last year.
Peanut acreage was estimated at 521,000 acres up slightly from 1974. Acres harvested are usually dependent on the weather and crop conditions at harvest time but is tentatively set at 515,000 acres.
Tobacco harvested acreage was estimated at 75,000 acres up 4 percent or 3,000 acres from last year's high yielder. All sorghum plantings, at 70,000 acres, expanded 5,000 acres from both earlier intentions and last year's level of 65,000 acres. Part of the increase is believed to stem from weatherrelated delays in planting other crops, particularly corn.
At the time of the March Survey, farmers indicated slightly less acreage for hay production but now indicate more hay acreage. About 460,000 acres for hay production is now estimated for 1975 up 1 percent.
The production estimates for corn and tobacco will be available on July 11.
