Conservation
With Soil Stewardship Week upon us once again, May 4-11, it is very important to me that all citizens recognize the real meaning of Georgia's 27 Soil and Water Conservation Districts.
Districts are not now, and never were, mere pieces of territory to
be drawn out on the map. They are not political entities nor do they have uniform size and uniform problems. All our natural resources are there, to be sure, but the distinctive quality of districts is that they are alive with the different ideas, energy, and objectives of dedicated men and women. Districts are people-places. Districts change steadily, not only because of external conditions such

as drought, laws and inflation, but because the people and the leaders change. There are ever new problems, new handicaps and new resources but also new aspirations and goals. If this were not the case and the district program was geared to 1945 instead of 1975, that would be reason for real concern.
We are all proud that district leaders are active stewards. And active stewards are people who come up with their own ideas but are willing to entertain the ideas of others. There is a premium today on

Marek's disease and the improvement of the poultry environment are the subjects of research projects currently being conducted by the Agricultural Research Service.
Researchers have discovered how to improve the poultry environment by an inexpensive temperature and humidity control system. The system, known as a "time-proportioning temperature and humidity control system" can readily be adapted to the ventilation and heating equipment of

The investment credit will be more beneficial than ever before in reducing in-
come tax liability for farmers this year and during 1976. "The Tax Reduction
Act of 1975" increased the investment credit from 7 to 10 per cent. This in-
creased rate applies to property acquired and placed in service after January 21,
1975 and before January 1, 1977.

Ferns are a natural choice for homeowners seeking attractive foliage plants for either indoor or outdoor decor. These plants seem to have unique foliage which possesses appealing color, texture, and grace.

A number of different types of farm property qualify for the investment credit. In general all tangible business property except land and buildings will qualify. This includes

Dear Editor:
I wish to protest an article in the April 9 MARKET BULLETIN concerning the use of mayonniase etc. jars for home canning. I have been using all kinds of commercial jars for over 20 years in the pressure canner and have had very good success. There has been some breakage but so do some Mason jars.
With prices what they are, how can we overlook the advantages for the small disadvantages? I used coffee jars last summer by placing a can "flat" under the lid. Process as usual but leave "hook" lid on til jar is opened for use.
I have never had any sealing problems. ( have used syrup, jelly, coffee, pickle, peanut butter, mayonnaise, mustard, vinegar and even large coco cola bottles by screwing lid down tight, loosen one turn, process in pressure cooker and tighten lid when you remove from cooker. Light candle and let wax run around seal. We drank apple and tomato juice all winter out of these.
There are too many hungry people in the world to waste these useful jars.
Mrs. M. B. Keltey Route 2, Box 266 Gainesville, Georgia 30501
(Editor's note: Unofficially, we agree; officially, our home economist and Extension Service personnel still contend that you should not use anything but standard canning jars and lids.)
Farm employment
No commercial, industrial or domestic employment permitted. Only that employment that pertains to the individual farm may be advertised.

This variety of the common blue violet came to be known as the "Confederate Violet" because of its white or pale grey petals, reminiscent of the Confederate grey uniforms of the South. In tribute to the fallen soldiers, friends and relatives used the little wild flower to decorate the Confederate graves.
Although we would like to claim that Confederate Violets grow only in the South, we can not, as they grow as far North as Maine and as far West as Wyoming.
For centuries all varieties of violets have been used in medicine, the ancients calling them cooling herbs. Violet leaf poultices were claimed to soothe a burning stomach or inflamed eyes. In more recent times, herbalists claim to have used the syrup of violets for bronchitis and asthma.
Besides the medicinal uses, violet oil is the most costly flower essence marketed and candied violet petals are considered a confection delicacy.
Although violets do have practical uses, it is the sentimentality associated with them that we remember most. Next time you find a Confederate Violet, perhaps you will be reminded of the symbolism of the pale grey petals to the South.

Hens lay more and eat less at a temperature of 70F. During brooding, a 90F. temperature is desirable, but during the four week grow-out period the temperature should be lowered to 70F.
Relative humidity control reduces dry litter conditions, leading to dust and reduced performance.
In addition, researchers have taken steps toward identifying the cause of resistance to Marek's disease in chickens.

this kind of initiative because it represents a number of essential attributes: concern, effort, vision and imagination. Indeed, the best definition of soil stewardship is "the spirit of responsible persons at work on the land."
Consider, for instance, the challenge to be found in Georgia's committment to pollution abatement and the growing preoccupation with land use planning. There is a rising demand for outdoor recreation facilities and an awareness that prime agricultural land must be protected. Controversies exist everywhere regarding the location of new power plants, airports, housing developments, factories and highways - to say nothing of schools, hospitals and shopping centers.
New ideas to meet new situations are a continuing test of the strength of stewardship and that is the theme of this year's observance: "A Test of Strength." These new ideas are the source of the vitality and the foundation of the usefulness of the soil and water conservation districts.
Perhaps most basic is the soil steward's belief that "The earth is the Lord's and the fullness thereof; the world, and they that dwell therein."

increased rate can mean in reduced taxes, consider the farmer who purchased a tractor with a useful life of seven years costing $12,000. In 1974 his investment credit would have been $840 (7% of $12,000). However, if the tractor was purchased after January 21, 1975 the investment credit would be $1,200 (10% of $12,000). This would mean an increased tax savings of $360 on the purchase of this one item. Remember that investment credit is subtracted directly from tax due on the return. The amount of the credit that can be used in any year is limited to the tax liability for that year. Any credit unused in the current year can be carried back 3 years and then forward for 7 years.
NEW PROPERTY There is no limit on the amount of new property that can be taken into account in figuring investment credit for any one year. However, there is a limit on the amount of used property that qualifies for the credit. Under the old law the limitation on used property was $50,000. The Tax Reduction Act increased this limit to $100,000 for tax years 1975 and 1976. Beginning in 1977 the $50,000 limitation on used property will again apply. With the increased rate in effect this year and next, it is important to consider the timing of capital expenditures during the next few years. If your long range plans call for the purchase of qualifying items during the next few years, it may be a good idea to begin making plans to purchase these items during the remainder of this year or in 1976 so you can take advantage of the higher rate. Of course the Congress might decide to continue the high rate on investment credit after December 31, 1976, but as the law stands now the old 7% rate will become effective again on January 1, 1977.
BROOD COWS The purchase of a herd of brood cows could result in a sizeable investment credit. However, a special rule states that if substantially identical livestock has been sold during a one year period beginning six months before other livestock is acquired, the cost of the acquired livestock must be reduced by the amount realized on the sale of the identical livestock. Also, the purchase of a pecan grove, peach orchard or other income producing trees and vines can result in investment credit. In this case the purchase price must be allocated between the land and the trees. Only the cost allocated to trees will qualify for investment credit. The Tax Reduction Act of 1975 contained a number of other provisions in addition to the changes in investment credit. Some of these include rebates on 1974 income taxes; reductions in 1975 income taxes; increases in child and dependent care deductions; tax credit for purchase of new residence; and adjustments in corporate tax rates.

locations. They will, however, thrive if exposed to a few hours of early morning sun. Their greatest asset is the ability to thrive where light intensity is limited. This is what makes ferns so valuable for interior use.
Ferns used outdoors thrive in shady gardens where humidity is usually higher. They will grow well on partially shaded porches protected from direct rays of the sun.
Ferns are fertilized periodically to promote healthy growth and proper color. The use of liquid fertilizer at monthly intervals should be sufficient to encourage new growth.
As mentioned previously, ferns , are available in many forms, textures and colors. Only a brief study is all that's needed to create a surprising interest in this group of plants. A publication written to introduce amateurs to the more popular ferns is available at your county agent's office.
